Electronic Frontier Foundation2,063,748We're live on Google Hangouts! Watch the digital teach-in here: http://youtu.be/yb1sYK8aGGISubmit questions via Twitter using the hashtag #404Day  On April 4th, EFF is partnering with the Center for Civic Media at MIT and the National Coalition Against Censorship to bring attention to the long-standing problem of Internet censorship in public libraries and schools for 404 Day. Join us on Friday, April 4th from 12pm-1pm PST for a digital teach-in with some of the top researchers and librarians working to analyze and push back against the use of Internet filters on library computers. Mark your calendars, and check back soon for more information about how you can tune-in.Speakers:Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Deputy Director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom.Chris Peterson, a research affiliate at the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab.Sarah Houghton, Director for the San Rafael Public Library in Northern California.Moderator: April Glaser, activist at the Electronic Frontier FoundationWe also invite librarians and concerned bloggers across the country to blog about Internet filtering in libraries on 404 Day to raise awareness and share stories of free speech infringing censorship in schools and libraries. Want to blog about it? Write an email to april@eff.org to let us know.About Children's Internet Protection Act & Censorship in LibrariesOver 10 years ago, Congress passed the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), a bill that brought new levels of Internet censorship to libraries across the country. The law is supposed to encourage public libraries and schools to filter child pornography and obscene or “harmful to minors” images from the library’s Internet connection in exchange for continued federal funding. Unfortunately, aggressive interpretations of this law have resulted in extensive and unnecessary censorship in our cherished public libraries, often because libraries go beyond the legal requirements of CIPA when implementing content filters. As a result, students and library patrons across the country are routinely and unnecessarily blocked from accessing constitutionally protected websites.404 Day: A Day of Action Against Censorship in Libraries2014-04-04 21:00:0067G+

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,063,748We invite you to join us for a live Google Hangout on Tuesday October 1st at 2 PM Pacific / 5 PM Eastern to learn more about the TPP's copyright provisions and their impact on users, their effect on U.S. copyright law, and how we can work together to protect our access to knowledge, digital rights, and internet freedom. There will also be time for Q & A.Even though we successfully killed SOPA and ACTA, special interests groups continue to pour millions of lobbying dollars to push policies that would further restrict our rights to knowledge. Unable to pass such measures through our legislative process, they’re using secretive, non-democratic tactics to fold harsher copyright restrictions and enforcement measures into a larger trade agreement. The latest and biggest threat on this front is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a multinational trade agreement being negotiated between the United States and 11 other Asia-Pacific countries.Speakers:* Lori Wallach: Director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch* Krista Cox, Staff attorney at Knowledge Ecology International (KEI)* Maira Sutton, Global Policy Analyst at EFF* Parker Higgins, Activist at EFFTPP, Copyright, and Users' Rights: Google Hangout with EFF, KEI, and Public Citizen2013-10-01 23:00:00106G+

Susanne Ramharter72,819Am Freitag, dem 16.8. kommt +Michael Lee Johnson nach Wien. Michael unternimmt soeben dabei wildes (wahnsinniges?)

Ronnie Bincer85,194Recently Google+ Changed some things regarding a Plus One to a Post. Come watch a Live discussion with at least 3 Google+ Power users as to how this has changed things. Learn from the discussion what you may want to do differently or if nothing has changed for you.Mobile Viewers can watch via this link: To Plus 1 or Not to Plus 1... That is the Question! ...* and those wanting to try out the Questions App can visit this link or click the *"Official site link below" once it shows.I'll be joined by +Mark Traphagen & +Dustin W. Stout ... there may be more people on the Panel by the time we get going on Tuesday. There will be a LIVE Video just to the left of this text at show time. The Event time will translate to your local time (unless you are on Mobile) Start time reference is 7pm PT/10pm ET USA.There is a chance we may be using the Questions App {Beta - Field Trial} during the show, if so, we will leave a link to guide you there if you want to see it in action during the show.Plus 1's now are truly recommendations. Many of us used Plus 1's for other things like "Got it" or "I see this" - a form of acknowledgement, or other "social kindness" but with the new normal, some of this is changing.Leave your questions, concerns, etc. in the comments... we'll try to address them in the live show. Remember, shorter comments/questions (that still make sense!) have a better chance at showing up on screen. Here is a post that can help get you started on this topic if you are not sure what we are talking about: http://goo.gl/ojsMc - This one is a follow up that helps explain more of the details: http://goo.gl/nUe2i - - - #GooglePlusUpdates   #PlusOne   #GooglePlusTips   #PostingStrategy  To Plus 1 or Not to Plus 1... Reinventors Network782,607Here's a really hard problem that Larry Lessig is not sure how to solve: "Let's assume we've got a fundamentally corrupt government, in the precise sense that the dependence upon "funders" corrupts the intended dependence upon "the people alone," and that too many within that system are too deeply connected to it to push for its change. That means any effective movement for change has got to come from the outside. How would a grassroots movement in the Internet Age create the pressure such a change would require? How would the people who brought the Internet to scale tackle this problem?"Joining Larry in his effort is a veritable who's who of internet know-how, the folks who have built & scaled networks for change: internet pioneer Tim O'Reilly, Change.org Founder Ben Rattray, Moveon.org Executive Director Anna Galland, VC Brad Burnham, Executive Producer of TED Media June Cohen, Bram Cohen, creator of BitTorrent, and Markos Moulitsas, Founder of Daily Kos. Reinvent Money in Politics2013-07-11 20:00:00196G+

We'll be cooking easy and inexpensive Korean food!                                    **********************On Sunday's show, Michelle will be making Mandu Two Ways - (Mandoo)She’ll be making fried dumplings and dumpling soup.  It’s the perfect Korean comfort food to start off the wintry New Year!  Here is the recipe: http://bit.ly/S7hvOnWatch Michelle LIVE on this Event's page, on +Larry Fournillier's Profile Page or on www.hangoutnetworks.com #hoa   #hangoutsonair   #michellelikoreankitchen   #koreanrecipes  Michelle Li's Korean Kitchen - Mandu : Episode 01 - 6:00PM(EST)2013-01-07 00:30:0059G+

Samantha Villenave1,066,768+Art+Talk #16, an interview with +Kurt Ankeny, hosted by myself and +Lena Levin .I asked Kurt for a bio. What he gave me are these beautiful words."I like to describe myself as an autodidact, but that's not really true at all. If anything, I'm a bibliodidact. Some of the works most important to my formation were How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Those two were my lifeline for many critical years of development. In fact, I had given away my copy of Anatomy Lessons,  when I started recognizing images from it in the paintings I was looking at. I hadn't realized how deeply those images penetrated. So I had to buy myself a replacement copy. Here's a problem I have: all writing about art tends to circumvent the art itself. I'm not saying one shouldn't write about art, but it's deceptive to cement into prose a reaction to a piece that depends wholly on the time, circumstances, education, experience, and readiness of the individual viewer looking at it and reacting or responding. So, what you have a is a snapshot of a very, very narrow point where two individuals connected for a moment in time.So those qualms aside, I'm a relatively new painter. I've only been painting for about seven years. Four of them what I would consider "full-time". Painting, as most of us who practice with any determination and ambition know, is a very slow burn. Cy Twombly told Jenny Saville to try and remain ignored for as long as possible. And that is good advice as long as one can manage it. Because painting, especially since the modernist movement, is a vast ocean of possibilities and it takes many canvases to get your bearings.I guess that's my long-winded way of saying that I really don't know what I'm doing yet. I know, I know. One isn't supposed to undercut one's brand and reputation with such nonsense and honesty. "I don't know what I'm doing" does not mean "I don't know where I'm going." I do have plans, I have grand ideas and ambitions. It's just that there's a lot of white space on the map between where I stand now and Mount Accomplishment. I think that the fissure between abstraction and figuration is an obvious point of interest. Today's painters are swarming on that likeArt+Talk interview with painter Kurt Ankeny2012-11-04 20:00:0023G+

For those of you who thought you were escaping images of Drunk Babies with my choice for yesterday's post, think again! Here are some Putti in the painting of Venus and Mars by Carlo Saraceni, who died on June 16th in 1620.

This version is not quite as good as the one I posted last year here: http://goo.gl/NaxUpJ , it seems a bit plumper, somehow less sophisticated, but the Putti are worth it!

Have a fun start into your week and tread lightly

PS: I've let Google AutoEnhance the heck out of the image because it was too dark to appreciate otherwise, see original at wikimedia here:  http://goo.gl/4N20Th

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.17
Today is the birthday of one of my favorite graphic artists, M.C. Escher, who was born on June 17th in 1898.
Escher is probably the best known graphic artist ever to have lived. His work has surrealistic touches, and much of it deals with both complexity and confusion.

So, as I am in the throes of doing research for a non-fiction book, trying to find a tool that will let me: collaborate with another author, get order into literally thousands of files, pdf's and eBooks, finding bridges between the worlds of Apple and Windows, while storing everything in the cloud - this image spoke to me.

Escher's Relativity is me at the moment, lots of attention deficit, going in 'n' directions at once, virtually fragmented as far as both focus and attention are concerned, and doing, re-doing, and then... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 08.25
Today we remember Thomas Moran, the American landscape painter of the Hudson River School, who died on August 25th in 1926. Born in England in 1837, his family emigrated to the US in 1844. His training began as an engraver, but he soon left to train informally with artists both in the US and Europe.

He was greatly impressed with, and influenced by, J.M.W. Turner, whose influence can be seen in Moran's work. This is his painting of the Green River, Wyoming showing the stunning light and coloring of the area.

It is said that the water colors and paintings that Moran made of the area around Yellowstone played a major role in helping to establish the National Park in 1872. Your "what a surprise" post for the day
There are people who simply do not participate in any kind of activity without the proper gear and costume. I am at the other end of the spectrum, old t-shirts, jeans or an old pair of shorts are my standard for everything from yard work, bicycle or motorcycle riding, yoga, cross-country skiing, etc. I've even been caught chasing balls on our tennis court in the linen sun dress I happened to be wearing at the time.

So I'm always very impressed and slightly embarrassed by all those people with the (semi-)professional outfits - but obviously not enough to actually do anything about it. How nice to know that not all of the expensive clothing and gear is used to actually practice: ;-)

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 08.24
For most people who are blessed to live in areas of peace and plenty, Sundays are days with a special meaning, whether they are actively religious or not. So, on this Sunday, here is a part of a 3D work by James Rizzi, the American artist.

The only connection to this day is that I saw an exhibition of his work in Gmünd, Austria just the other day. I have always liked Rizzi's work, and was even more impressed by seeing it close up, and in contrast to works by Warhol or Keith Haring.  All three were major figures in the PopArt scene, but oh how different their works.

Haring is probably more similar to Rizzi than Warhol is, which comes as no surprise since, as Rizzi said, Haring was one of his idols - as was Warhol, Paul Klee and Bugs Bunny. But while Haring's work has an element of aggression - all those clearly outlined, active figures in stark surrounings, Rizzi's work shows the lighter, fun influence of Bugs Bunny as well.

His work is full of light, humor and, yes, "good will". He spent most of his life in NYC, and his work shows different aspects of the city, but always the positive sides. The spirit of multiculturalism, art, chaos and the fascination with the many, many inhabitants. If nothing else, his work is a wonderful testament to what a city can be.

It is no wonder that one of his favorite maxims was “The past is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift.“ and that is the perfect summation of a Sunday.

Make the most of your gift today, and tread lightly.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 08.21
As balance to yesterday's doom and gloom, today's painting is the Drama of Light, by the American artist Hanson Puthuff, who was born on August 21st in 1875.

Like many American artists, Puthoff began his career as a commercial artist, producing signs, posters and even illustrations for billboards, before resigning to concentrate on his own work in 1926. He is best known for his landscapes, mostly of California and the western US.

There is something soothing about pleasant images that evoke memories and associations, and he captured both the light and the ambiance of the landscapes he portrayed.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 08.03
On this Sunday, we remember the American Painter of the Hudson River School, George Inness, who died onAugust 3rd in 1894.

He painted many lovely landscapes, both of American and European scenes, this one is his On the Delaware River. I chose this painting not only because it's lovely, but also because it shows just the kind of weather we've been having for the last few weeks, short bursts of sunshine, lots of clouds and rain - this could be from where I live, both the clouds and the scernery.  But a succession of house-guests is keeping me busy, and I apologize for my lapses in posting.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.30
Today we celebrate the birthday of a painter, architect and "the Father of Art History", Giorgio Vasari, who was born on July 30th in 1511.

Today Vasari is better known for his writing "Lives of the Artists" than for his other artworks, but he was greatly respected in his own day, receiving many commissions from the Medici.  But anyone walking through Florence will be surrounded by his architectural works, such as the Uffizi, and the redisigned Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce churches.

Here we have his painting of the Immaculate Conception. At first glance, one has to ask, what does this have to do with the story as we know it. Fact is, during Vasari's lifetime in the 16th century, there was not yet a codex or rules of iconography as to how this 'event' was to be portrayed. It was left up to the artist to display his own ideas (or those of his patron) about the Immaculate Conception.

Vasari chose not to try and show the event itself, but rather it's meaning. We see the Virgin, floating in the sky, surrounded by Cherubim (yes, these are Cherubim, not Putti), everything is sweet and light. But oh, down below. There are Adam and Eve, along with other evil-doers, in the murky, dark and writhing shadows, chained to the tree, from which rises the serpent. A serpent with a human torso, dark wings, and horns. Incidentally, the Virgin's foot is on his forehead, showing her dominance. The two angels on either side of her hold an inscription, the translation of which reads: Those condemned by the sin of Eve are saved by the grace of Mary.

And there you have it, Woman as cause of both the Fall and the Redemption of Man. A theme of polarization that shows up again and again in Art. <sigh>

Have a day with less drama than this painting does, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 03.30
Today is the birthday of one of my favorite artists, Vincent van Gogh, who was born on March 30th in 1853.

There are over 7 million entries under his name to be found on Google, and over one million with the word "biography" added.  There is nothing that I could conceivably add to the mountains of information available about Van Gogh, whose untimely death at the age of only 37 deprived the world of such a magnificent artist.

What can one even try to say about an artist who created psychological masterpieces like the Potato Eaters, grandiose visions of the cosmos such as Starry Night, and could make views of  Tree Roots or a Patch of Grass so fascinating?

I won't even try.

Just one tip, as you go through these paintings, you may want to pay attention to what this man can do with yellow, the different shades, energies and meanings that he elicits from what we just call yellow.

Enjoy the pictures, have a lovely Sunday and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.28
We begin the week by celebrating the birthday of one of Art's premier Bad Boys, Marcel Duchamp, the French artist who was born on July 28th in 1887.

Duchamp cared nothing for established forms or theories of art. He is probably the artist who helped to develop the idea of conceptual art, and thus moving far, far away from accepted academic practices. One could say that, with Duchamp, art took a major step away from the primarily visual and narrative context, an moved into a much more intellectual one. (Whether we like it, or not)

But here is one of his more 'conservative' pieces, from his time and experiments with cubism, called King and Queen Surrounded by Swift Nudes.

May your day be full of energy, just this painting is, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.27
Yesterday's weather was perfect for taking a field trip. We drove to the small village of Metnitz in Carinthia and had a look at their Dance of Death Museum

The concept of the Danse Macabre, came from Catholicism. The earliest known example is from the Cemetary of the Church of the Holy Innocents in Paris, completed around 1424-25. The Dance of Death became a popular theme in religious art, in part because of the very real existential threats to life such as repeated famines, the Hundred Years War, and the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe  in the 14th Century, causing between 75 and 200 Million deaths.

The theme of the Dance of Death was communicated via plays (like the early mystery plays), poetry and paintings.  The point of these works was in part to combat vanity, by showing that death ultimately comes to everyone, whether they are rich or poor, strong or weak.

That is why these panels show Death coming to claim all kinds of different people, the Pope, the Emperor, Knights, Ladies, Farmers, Craftsmen etc. Below the scenes are texts, in which Death has a short dialogue with each person, who resignedly accept their fates.

Our fate was to get caught in an absolute downpour on our way home, but at least we were in the car and not on the motorcycle.

Hope both your weather and your day is friendly, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.25
Today we celebrate the birthday of the American artist Maxfield Parrish, who was born on July 25th in 1870.  This is his Dream Castle in the Sky, painted in 1908, about 10 years after Mucha painted his Seasons. While the style is different, we can still recognize the influence of Art Nouveau, in the romanticized treatment.

Sorry for being so short, a bout with the dentist this morning has left me a bit woozy, but, for Information about Parrish, see the post from last year here: http://goo.gl/ri1xxQ

Have a wonderful day, watch your mouth ;-)  and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.24
So much landscape, and with grizzly stories at that, cries out for something completely different. By a wonderful coincidence, today is the birthday of the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, who was born on July 24th in 1860.

Mucha worked in Vienna, Paris and many of the Slavic countries, and was a major factor in the development of Art Nouveau. He worked both as a painter and in all kinds of decorative arts, creating a poster for one of Sarah Bernhard's plays that she liked so much she gave Mucha a six year contract for more.

This is his The Seasons from 1897. Like most of his works, we see lovely young women, in somewhat neo-classical robes, surrounded by flowers and plants of the seasons. They look like they would be fun to know, even Winter to have a certain sense of humor and happiness.

Rubens, before and after
once in a while, I'll get a question about the colors (or lack of them) in a post about an art work. As these before and after pictures of Rubens' Don Calderón on Horseback  show, the original paintings were often quite different.

While Hopper himself denied having been influenced by modern European art during his various trips to Paris, I think we see some definite influence here. There is a story to this piece, as Harnoncourt says in his introduction, Beethoven did not have any kind of commission or contract for this work, he wrote it because of his admiration for Goethe, and is a musical summary of Goethe's play of the same name.

Though under threat of arrest, Egmont refuses to run away and give up his ideal of liberty. Imprisoned and abandoned because of the cowardice of his people, and despite the desperate efforts of his mistress Klärchen, he is sentenced to death.

Thus, faced with her failure and despair, Klärchen puts an end to her life. The play ends on the hero's last call to fight for independence. His death as a martyr appears as a victory against oppression.

Egmont is a political manifesto in which Egmont's craving for justice and national liberty is opposed to the despotic authority of the Duke of Alba. It is also a drama of destiny in which the Flemish nobleman, with fatalism, accepts the dire consequences of his straightforwardness and honesty.

... and that comes across so well.

"Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt was born 152 years ago.
This is ‘Hope II’ painted in 1907-8, from MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art: http://goo.gl/1d5pXM
“In this painting, a pregnant woman bows her head and closes her eyes, as if praying for the safety of her child. Peeping out from behind her stomach is a death's head, sign of the danger she faces. At her feet, three women with bowed heads raise their hands, presumably also in prayer—although their solemnity might also imply mourning, as if they foresaw the child's fate. (...) Here, birth, death, and the sensuality of the living exist side by side suspended in equilibrium.”

Today we celebrate not only Bastille Day, but also the birthday of one of Austria's leading artists, Gustav Klimt, who was born on July 14th in 1862.

Academically trained, Klimt formed a cooperation with fellow art students and founded that "Art Compagnie" in the 1880's. They received a number of commissions to produce scenes, paintings and backdrops for theaters and productions. Very likely, these early works, full of symbolism and allegories, were a major influence on Klimt, who would change his style, but remain true to the symbolic content of his work throughout his career.

Most of his work centered on the subject of women and was more or less blatantly erotic. In the late 19th century, full of hypocrisy about sexuality, this was a definite break with taboos and his work was heavily criticized. Not only were the women he portrayed overtly sexual, but he took the symbolist 'genre' or 'type' of female as seductress to new extremes, which did not sit well with the inhibited and prude bourgeoisie.

Klimt was given a commission to paint works for the University of Vienna and produced 3 paintings, Philosophy, Jurisprudence and Medicine, which were all rejected as being unacceptable. They were considered too arousing, different and pornographic for display. As a response to the antagonism that much of his work encountered, he painted this, his To My Critics, which later became known as the Goldfish.

We see four nymphs, and the head of a huge Goldfish, just behind the nymph at the bottom, whose back is turned to the viewer and whose facial expression is a wonderful mixture of amusement and provocation.

My all your provocations be just as fun, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+ - your daily story about art 07.11

This is Mes Aynak, an ancient Buddhist city about 130 miles from Kabul. The site was left pretty undisturbed for over 2000 years, until it's discovery in 1963. Even then, while there was the inevitable looting and even use by Taliban and Al-Qaeda, there remain untold treasures and discoveries.

But unfortunately, it seems that the site is also very rich in Copper, and the Chinese have a contract with the Afghan government to mine the location, which will destroy all remains of this truly unique piece of human history.  A campaign in 2012 brought about a delay, while a rescue dig was organized, which still continues today, under immense time constraints.  To properly do the job, archaeologists would need about another 20 years, but they only have until the end of 2014. Thereafter, the Chinese will move in and that will be that.

So, goodbye to another irreplaceable site, that could bring understanding about all our history, the site is along the Silk Road and could continue to provide many insights to the civilization at the time not only in Afghanistan.

As a child, I was amazed and fascinated by a visit to the Buddhas in Bamiyan, and will never forget the experience of climbing up and onto the head of the large Buddha there. I cried when the Taliban destroyed them. And I am afraid that I will cry again and often about the destruction of #MesAynak.

For a while, in 2012 and 2013 we heard quite a bit about the going's on. But things have become very quiet about Mes Aynak. Even a few hours searching on Google did not bring up more than a handful of articles from this year. Why is that?

Why is Mes Aynak not a #worldheritagesite  ?
Why does the +UNESCO do absolutely nothing to save this amazing piece of human history?
Why is the #media  not reporting on the destruction to come?
Why are there no organizations/governments or movements taking action?
Why the absolute hell does no one even try?!?

Is it because it's so far away? Because it's 'only the Afghans'? Because it's 'only Buddhist art'? Or because we're all afraid of offending the Chinese? Or because it seems hopeless, so why bother?

+Brent Huffman , a documentary film maker, is finishing (or has finished) a film about Mes Aynak. Check out his youtube channel for more.

I'm going to ping some of the people in my "People who give a damn" circle below, maybe you have some ideas of how we could put this wonderful platform to good use, to at least raise our voices in protest.

Thanks for reading to the end, and, even if, like this case, difficult, do try to tread lightly

This may go some way to explaining some of the effects that were at the center of the FB fiasco a few weeks or so. As Zak points out, increased levels of Oxytocin can be determined from the use of social media.

On the sober side, there is a connection between these new discoveries in neuroscience and my post about Aldous Huxley's dire predictions from yesterday here: http://goo.gl/tJU5hM.  It seems that we don't actually need chemical stimulants to affect our moods, they can be affected (manipulated?) by things such as images, videos, and social media.

Huxley, who wrote the Brave New World, seems to have foreseen many of the possibilities that not only chemical substances, but our technology is now making this a reality.

+Gideon Rosenblatt has an article about some of these issues as related to the FB actions here: http://www.the-vital-edge.com/facebook-experiment/ and a very good followup post here: http://goo.gl/vYhVBh, in which he talks about the ethical aspects, as mentioned by +danah boyd in a great piece here: http://goo.gl/vrufU7.

My personal concerns center on the sense of a false reality that FB (as well as other platforms) can create. FB is presenting happy posts, cutting edge search algorithms offer users results based on past choices, even Google+ will let people in your circles fade away if you don't communicate with them regularly enough. And that's not even considering the less than benign manipulations being done with twitter as reports about the ISIS campaigns show.

All of this is a kind of manipulation of reality. It's hard not to envision a future where even newer developments such as windows on German trains whispering advertisements to people who rest their heads against them, (see here: http://goo.gl/LmiFQz) or ever more technological gadgets turn us into Borg-like zombies.

I realize that, to many here, I will sound like some kind of a Luddite, or conspiracy nut. But, as FB and others show, to a certain degree this is already happening. Personally, I have no idea how the advances of applied technology can be 'limited' to uses that will be benign, do you?

Irreplaceable pieces of history and human heritage at risk

Apart from the unimaginable human suffering taking place in Syria and Iraq, there is evidence that ISIS will destroy or steal some of the most important historical and artistic artifacts of human civilization.

It doesn't matter whether the destruction comes due to the antediluvian beliefs of the religious fanatics as it did with the destruction of the Buddhas in Afghanistan, or the cynical looting and selling to finance the delusions of grandeur and the Caliphate.  Either way, Civilization is about to lose some of it's most valuable treasures.

Every Manager/Leader should keep this in mind:
"Inside Every Cynical Person, there is a Disappointed Idealist"
George Carlin

One of the biggest gripes of many managers or self styled leaders is the apathy and disengagement of employees. Countless are the number of times that I heard that either I, or a peer or staff member who did not completely drink the corporate cool-aid at work was being cynical,  non-supportive, or not taking one for the team.

What most of these managers don't (want to?) realize, is that the vast majority of employees would love to be truly engaged. One of the greatest sources of stress and thus the increasing wave of burn-out cases is frustration at work. So dear managers, before you gripe about the disengagement and cynicism of employees again, think about the many projects that were started under the title of 'change', 'innovation', 'empowerment' etc., or any of those other, cool sounding buzz words. And think about how many of those programs were then aborted, or left to die a quiet death, because another downsizing program made them obsolete.

Employees are smart, and quick to see whether the talk is being walked. When the difference between the talk and the walk is too obvious, or occurs too often, the disappointed idealists become cynical.

Happy Birthday +martin shervington !
Meeting you and watching you develop here on Google+ has been one of the highlights and a joy. I wish you a wonderful day full of celebration and much success in the future.

This is the entrance to the Gaudi Park in Barcelona. It reminded me a bit of the atmosphere we often find here, bursting with people who come to look around, enjoy the surroundings and offerings. There was a sense of companionship, even among all the strangers, many smiles and good cheer.

For anyone reading this post who sometimes feels a bit overwhelmed by the multitudes and and looking for a few tips and hints about using Google+, whether for your own pleasure or for business: +martin shervington is someone you definitely want to circle!

Today I am a Mother of the Bride!
While our dress is a bit more modern, the preparations and the wedding itself will almost be as elaborate as shown here, in Konstantine Makovsky's Preparing for the Wedding.

May your day be as full of joy as mine is sure to be, and tread lightly
PS: responses to comments will be late in coming ;-)

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.03
Today we remember Francesco Bassano the Younger, an Italian painter who died on July 7th in 1592.
Bassano was part of a family of painters begun by his father, who was a village painter in the town of Bassano, hence the name.

The family painted mostly genre pictures as well as religious works, often replicating existing works. This is his Animals Entering the Ark, a good example of his realistic work. I can't help it, everytime I thing about the 'Ark' I crack up because I'm reminded of the old Bill Cosby routine about Noah and the Ark. If you've never heard it (and even if you have), your in for a treat. Post to follow!

Engagement Happiness comes from focusing on others

I read this story early this morning, and thought that there is a similarity between what went on in the group described below and on Social Media Platforms. Do read the original post first, it's not long and I'll wait

Just like the people below, who originally searched only for their own balloons, focusing one's time, energy and attention on one's own posts on a platform like Google+ will not bring happiness engagement. It is only when our focus goes outside of ourselves, into what others are saying, and we engage in true conversations, that the rewards of connections, new ideas and impulses, and yes, engagement will occur.

And apart from all the moralistic jargon, it's a lovely story ;-)

Not sure if this is true story, but the message is great

Once a group of 500 people were attending a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity. He started giving each person a balloon. Each person was then asked to write their name on it using a marker pen. Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room.

The people were then let into that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written on it within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching for their name, colliding with each other, pushing around others and there was utter chaos.

At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own balloon.
Then, the speaker asked each person to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it. Within minutes everyone had their own balloon.

The speaker then began, "This is happening in our lives. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is.

Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their happiness; you will get your own happiness. And this is the purpose of human life...the pursuit of happiness."

I thought oh you +Wade Harman and relationship marketing the moment I read this.

✶Good Morning Google+ ✶your daily story about art 07.02

For those who missed it last year, here is my post about the Italian Francesco Maffei, who died on July 2nd, in 1660.

✶Good Morning Google+ ✶your daily story about art
On this Tuesday, let me introduce Francesco Maffei, a relatively obscure Italian Baroque painter who died on July 2nd in 1660.  Maffei's date of birth is not known, it is mentioned as "1610, give or take 10 years", something that is inconceivable to us in this day and age of facts and data.

Maffei was very much into "narrative" art, i.e. paintings that told stories, many of them dealing with mythological subjects, such as this one, his Perseus Beheading Medusa.  Like most of Greek Mythology, the story of the Hero, or demi-God Perseus is full of love, hate, revenge and triumph over incredible odds. For those who don't know the story or have forgotten the details, the story is this:

Perseus was given a momentous task by king Polydectes, who thought to thus rid himself of Perseus. The task was to bring back the head of the Medusa, a Gorgon whose hair of snakes would so frighten humans that they instantly turn to stone. Now Perseus, being the son of Zeus, had some powerful friends among the Gods, who helped him along, Zeus himself gave him a special sword and a helmet belonging to Hades, God of the underworld, which would make him invisible.  Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, lent him his winged sandals, and Athena gave him a polished shield. - This is starting to sound like an ancient Greek version of the Hobbit!

With the help of some old crones along the way, Perseus managed to surprise Medusa in her sleep, avoid looking at her directly by watching her reflection in the shield, and cutting of her head.  By the way, the mythical winged horse Pegasus is said to have sprung from her body once the head was severed. ... And you thought today's video games were torrid!

Maffei conveys the drama of the moment in this scene with the dynamic contortions of the main actors, Perseus, wearing the helmet, turns his head away and scrunches his face in concentration. Medusa, whose awful visage Maffei has been kind enough to spare us (probably lest we turn to stone), is only recognizable by a few snakes, and it almost looks as though Athena herself is holding the shield for him.  The only thing I can't quite 'see' in the reproductions available to me, are his supposedly, "nervous brush strokes" - but maybe that was just a projection of his critics, after all: would you be really comfortable painting something like this?

May you find helpers of your own today, and tread lightly

Here is his tryptich, The Gate to Paradise, which I saw at the exhibition of Decadence and Symbolism at the Belvedere in Vienna this past spring.  Though I've used the Google AutoEnhance to lighten up the image, just like the painting it is a rather somber view. There is no frolicking or happy-dancing in this view of paradise.

It shows two angels on the side panels, guarding the gate to paradise. We note that, even once past the guardians, there still seems to be a long way to go to reach the gate itself, way in the background. As for paradise itself, that is not shown at all, as it cannot be conceived by human beings.

Hopefully your Sunday does contain a bit of frolicking, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.20
Sincere apologies.
After spending many frustrating hours trying to get my research for another project into a useful tool (still not done), I decided to work off some of the frustration in the yard. Weeding, digging, planting a few new things, and then, after taking off my gloves, I thought "oh just one more" and grabbed what turned out to be poison ivy.

Now I'm frustrated, and my hands hurt.

So, instead of a fresh post, here is an older one about Salvatore Rosa, whose birthday is today.

May your day be better than mine. and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+

This morning, let's celebrate the birthday of Salvatore Rosa, an Italian artist born on June 20th in 1615.  Rosa was not only a painter, but also a musician, playwright and writer, mostly of rather satirical pieces berating the culture of his lifetime.  He was quite the maverick, thoroughly convinced of the correctness of his own views (aren't we all?).  For instance; while the prevalent taste was for bucolic scenes and landscapes, Rosa's nature is always very dark, untamed and full of foreboding.

As far as colors in Rosa's paintings go, this, his Allegory of Fortune is probably one of the lightest. It is also a terrific example of different ways we can appreciate a painting. On the one hand, we can look at it from a purely visual and intuitive point of view and enjoy the technical perfection as well as the way that Fortune is pouring riches onto the animals, cute, isn't it?  Then again, if we know a bit about the history of the period, and understand some of the symbolism, the painting acquires quite a different meaning.  Though hard to believe today, Rosa was (almost? sources vary) imprisoned for this painting.

Here's why: just as today, artists during the 17th century were dependent on sponsors and patrons for their livelihood and one of the most powerful sponsors was the Catholic Church.  While Rosa had a few patrons among the Church's hierarchy, his acerbic personality and penchant for ignoring the wishes of his patrons kept him off the papal "A-List" of artists.  This did not sit well with Rosa, who expressed both his contempt and his frustrations in the perfectly clear symbols of his day in this painting.

How? Let's start with Fortuna herself: normally she is portrayed blindfolded and her cornucopia (Horn of Plenty) is showing upwards, both symbolising her arbitrary dispensing of good and bad fortunes.  But the way she is shown here makes it clear that she is purposely showering her gifts on dumb animals.  After all, hogs, sheep and asses are not the most respected of creatures.  To reinforce this impression, the animals are trampling all over "true" art or wisdom, as can be seen by the palette and the books on the floor, one book even has Rosa's signature on its spine.  And that's not even considering the poor owl, hidden beneath the legs of the donkey.  The ass even wears a red cloak, very reminiscent of the papal mantua or the cloaks that Cardinals wore, is he seriously suggesting that the reigning Pope, Innocent X is an ass?  The fact that Innocent X was a Borgia pope known for his incredible nepotism, and the Borgia's coat of arms prominently shows a bull, of which there are two in this painting, would seem to support this theory. No wonder the painting caused such a furor!

Cause your own furor today, but tread lightly

Best enjoyed when listening to _Oh Fortuna!, either here with english lyrics, O Fortuna - Carmina Burana - Carl Orff - Latin, English - Knights,
or here as a flash mob: http://goo.gl/jFBnH

Today is the birthday of one of my favorite graphic artists, M.C. Escher, who was born on June 17th in 1898.
Escher is probably the best known graphic artist ever to have lived. His work has surrealistic touches, and much of it deals with both complexity and confusion.

So, as I am in the throes of doing research for a non-fiction book, trying to find a tool that will let me: collaborate with another author, get order into literally thousands of files, pdf's and eBooks, finding bridges between the worlds of Apple and Windows, while storing everything in the cloud - this image spoke to me.

Escher's Relativity is me at the moment, lots of attention deficit, going in 'n' directions at once, virtually fragmented as far as both focus and attention are concerned, and doing, re-doing, and then... more »

Escher's Relativity is me at the moment, lots of attention deficit, going in 'n' directions at once, virtually fragmented as far as both focus and attention are concerned, and doing, re-doing, and then repeating the process endlessly.

I hope your projects are more focused and on track, if not, please share in the comments so that I wont feel like such a lonely failure ;-)

Have a great and focused day, and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.16

Sports and Art: not always on the same page
+The Guardian  has a very interesting article about the reaction of street artists in Brazil to the ongoing World Cup titled Let them eat football

Quite apart from the content and its messages, there is some very good art shown in the gallery here: http://goo.gl/GcLbS6

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.15
This Sunday is the birthday of Nicolas Poussin, the fantastic French painter, who was born on June 15th in 1594. Because it is Sunday, I will refrain from re-posting the Drunk Babies from last year, but in case you want a look, the post is here: http://goo.gl/AGQPK2.  Instead, let's have a look at another painting, said to be one of his own favorites, his Judgement of Solomon.

Now, if your initial reactions is a bit 'ho hum..' that's fine. That was my first reaction as well. But then I remembered words of Wittgenstein that have really changed my views of not only art but many things in life:
… people are lazy. They never look at everything. They do what is called glancing, which is the same word for bumping off something and carrying on in almost the same direction, e.g. when a snooker-ball glancesoff... more »

Now, if your initial reactions is a bit 'ho hum..' that's fine. That was my first reaction as well. But then I remembered words of Wittgenstein that have really changed my views of not only art but many things in life:
… people are lazy. They never look at everything. They do what is called glancing, which is the same word for bumping off something and carrying on in almost the same direction, e.g. when a snooker-ball glances off another snooker-ball. Ludwig Wittgenstein. Philosophical Investigations, 1953.

So, let's have another look, shall we? (I'm going to assume that the story of the Judgement is familiar, if not, read up on it here: http://goo.gl/br2B )

The first hint that all is not what it seems is in the somewhat skewed architecture: Solomon is not really in the center, but slightly to the left, sitting on a throne that seems to be straight right under his feet and curved on the floor?! Further, the columns and pilasters in the background are a leaning towards the left as well. Now, we could say that this is a mistake, or bad technique, but not with a painter of Poussin's caliber. He knew his perspective!

But the major 'story' here is the ambiguity of it all. Which one is the true mother, and which is the false one? If we only 'glance' at the painting, our biases - nicely helped along by Poussin - will lead to the conclusion that the woman on the left, with her brighter, nicer clothes, nice hair, and arms outstretched, must be the true mother. In contrast, the woman on the right is painted in darker colors, raggedy clothes, hasn't seen a hairdresser in years, but does have that dead child casually drooping over her arm. She is obviously very excited, pointing to the - hmm, what is she pointing at? Does she point at the woman on the left, or maybe at the child?

There is no way to tell for certain, though most art historians share the view just stated. But there are clues that Poussin may have been playing with us, may have actually meant it quite the other way. The main clue is the child itself, even hanging upside down, it doesn't turn to the woman on the left, but the one on the right. Surely a terrified toddler would reach for its mother and not someone else?

And then look at the women again. If someone were about to hack apart my child, I would not turn to a third person, as the woman on the left does in turning to Solomon, all my attention would be on my child and the threat it faces.

So, we can't be certain about who is who here, can we. A wonderful example of Poussin's wit, as he also demonstrates in many of his other works. But we need to really look to see it.

Do your own looking today and tread lightly

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.14
Today we remember another woman artist, the American Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt.

As my computer has been crunching files all day long and will continue to do so, it has no extra energy for stories.
But you can find Information about the artist is here: http://goo.gl/DKg5N  and about the painting Boating Party  here: http://goo.gl/UpWMvV

Enjoy your Saturday and tread lightly
