I was browsing my 2005 photos of Baguio City and I found this.

It was my first time in Baguio City, and my first time to have traveled out of town with a camera.  And I was so excited that I had to wake up early morning for the next three days to photograph everything, literally everything I see.

Little Rascals

They aren't prisoners.  They’re children just being… children.  These young lads ran towards us and asked to be photographed.  They jumped, they ran, and then one of them, annoyed for being left out, hid behind this huge wooden gate.  As soon as he was spotted, other kids started pressing themselves in, one by one, and just stayed there waiting for another shot.  

Remember those days when you were out playing with your little gang? I miss those old days.

A child relaxes on a field of grass where the old Bacolod City Domestic Airport once stood--in the heart of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental's capital.  The city airport has been transferred to Silay City on 2007, that is about forty five to an hour away from the capital and is now known as Silay-Bacolod International Airport.

Morning Shift

The Best Thing You’ve Ever Photographed

These little Indians came up to me, curious about my silver little digital camera and how it instantly "develop" photos on its LCD, excitedly asked me to take their photo.  They laughed at each other when they saw their egg-shaped faces.  

I remember how exciting it was for these kids to witness a simple "magic" a little digicam can do.  It seems to be the greatest thing they've ever experienced as a child.  

It's a sad fact though that despite of the rapid development in technology, there is still people in rural and urban areas that has never experienced the trend, not even witness it nor heard about it.  It's surprising that I have photographed many people in the cities and yet, they’re still amazed as to how a modern camera works instantly.

BIG LEAP

I remember the very first time I had to travel with a DSLR on my hand, the first time to go on a trip leaving my old Nikon E3200 point-and-shoot digital camera, and excitedly packed the much heavier and bulkier Pentax K10D.  I felt a big change back then.  I knew that from that point on, my photographic experience would be more exciting and even more challenging.  

And this year, there’s another big leap and it's time to leave behind the point-and-shoot approach towards life and venture my way to a more exciting, and challenging ways of life, like that of a DSLR.  It may be confusing and will find it complicated at first, but I know I am equipped with the greatest inspiration to learn it, master it, live it and love it.

Challenge Accepted

Seeing the way Bruce Gilden photograph the streets of NYC, inspired me and at the same time fueled my curiosity on whether the same idea or technique can be done in Makati City, with a certain fact that it has one of the strictest and tightest security (specially for most amateur photographers with DSLRs) in the country.  It was a self-inflected challenge and I find it quite exciting, and yes, challenging.   

However, at the end of the day, I still wonder what those people I've photographed felt, when suddenly a total stranger pointed a camera at them and snapped, leaving them clueless.  I get mixed reactions, some gave me  smiles while others ignored me as if I wasn't there.  And there are some who gave me that @#$% off! look on their faces.

Poison Highway

The Welder

A welder in one of the steel shops in Pasig City poses for photograph.  Some Filipinos who can hardly afford college degree courses today chose to go to vocational schools or training programs that are being offered by the government.  

TESDA or Technical Education and Skill Development Authority is a government agency that aims to promote standards in the country's vocational courses.  Its programs offer skills training in culinary, electronics, automotive, carpentry, and other courses aligned to industry standards.  Graduates of TESDA training programs are able to find jobs locally but mostly high-paying jobs abroad.

Daranak falls in Tanay, Rizal is a public resort operated by the government.  A hidden paradise famous for natural vegetation, tropical trees, refreshing rivers, ponds, and beautiful waterfalls.

Taken few days after Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana).  The typhoon caused a landslide that damaged some parts of the area including trees and vegetations.

A local villager in Bangaan, Banaue travels along the rice paddies every day to work and back.  In 1995, the Bangaan Rice Terraces became part the UNESCO World Heritage List  as a Living Cultural Heritage of the people of Cordillera.

Remember The Stories

What I love most about taking photographs of strangers is that after taking their photos, they no longer are strangers to me.   They become inspirations, they become part of me and of my skills and in some way, I'm always hoping that I become part of them too, someone who, in some way gave them a wonderful time with my camera. 

After a while of sharing laughter, stories, and jokes with these strangers, I go home with new found friends and new stories to tell -- very fulfilling things for me as a photographer.

I keep a list of the names of the people I meet each time I'm outside wandering and taking photos.  But unfortunately, I lost my ever clever first generation iPod Touch few months ago where I keep the list.  And now I cannot remember the names of all those people I've photographed in the past months.  And it's reallydisap... more »

I've had my first opportunity to shoot under the pouring rain on 2007, just few months after I got my first ever camera.  I decided to go out and took photographs not because I was curious of my camera's ever trusted weather-sealing feature but because I was curious enough to try shooting and capture how human interacts on such situation.  

Then I realized that not only cameras can be weather-sealed,  so does street photography.

Waterworld

I visited Artex Compound in Malabon City on 2008, a community submerged in water all year round and was dubbed as Venice of Malabon.  

It was a housing project of a textile industry that closed down in 1989, and because it is located on the lowest area in the city, during heavy showers, the entire compound is easily submerged in deep water.  Improper garbage disposals, poor urban planning, and the increase of informal settlers are just few causes of the area’s flood problem.

Recent monsoon rains that hit the country few days ago left many cities and towns flooded, homes shattered, while many lives have been lost--again. 

Seriously, WE and not just the government must do something now before we find ourselves living on a waterworld.

The sun was up and the shadows came back over the weekend.  

An aftermath.

Several towns and cities flooded while hundreds of people displaced yet again by non-stop HEAVY monsoon rains during the past few days.  

Today, weather forecasters monitor movement of the 8th typhoon that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility.  

Hopes and prayers.  Stay safe and dry!

Suddenly, It Was 1983 all over again.

Who could have thought that such significant scenario in 1983 would happen again? It sent goosebumps to anyone young and old who have witnessed and understood "People Power".

A vendor in Carbon Market in Cebu City who sells fresh grilled tuna entertains customers while enjoying being photographed.  Carbon Market offers native delicacies, fresh catches of fish, vegetables, flowers and other native crafts.  It is one of the most visited places in Cebu City.
