It's always nice to see images of what it would look like if our planet had rings just like Saturn's. But usually those images show Saturn's rings scaled down.

Here's someone who has tried to figure out what rings around Earth would actually look like.

Sissipuukko M.95
Ranger knife by J-P Peltonen, Finland

////I wrote this and took the photos in 1999, but I haven't changed my opinion. Bought it directly from J-P at a show.////

This knife born out of a wish to make a good Finnish knife for the armed forces (but as it happened, a Swedish unit was the first military unit to purchase it).
A main design point was that the first business of a knife is to cut well. For this reason, it's not made of stainless steel, but forged carbon steel. The blade can then be thinner than a stainless steel knife equally strong, which helps performance. It's coated with black teflon.

A second point was that it should be easy to carry, held securely in the sheath, also for upside down carry, and accessible.

Making #icecream  without machinery other than a fridge (which I haven't had for more than a decade, I wrote this in 1990)

CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM

Mix 1 decilitre cream, 1 yolk and 2 table spoonfuls of sugar.
Whip it until it doesn't seem to get thicker, pour into a saucepan.
Heat while stirring.
When it gets real thick and slow flowing, reduce heat so it boils on low heat for about 2 minutes.
Put in 3 teaspoons of cacao powder (the sort mixed with suger), stir.
Pour the mixture into the container the ice cream will be frozen in and let it cool off.
Put into the freezer for 2 hours.
Whip 0.6 decilitres cream hard, mix it into the ice cream mixture as fluffy as possible and let stand in the freezer for at least 5 hours.

VANILLA ICECREAM

Instead of 2 table spoons of suger, use 3 and a half and exchange the cacao for 2 tea... more »

This was a beginners' eight day course which started with training with mostly cooked food and sleeping in tents, followed by a practical phase of three nights in improvised shelters and no food provided.
In preparation for the "away" days, we made a spoon, a digging stick, backpack frame and some fishing implements. Apart from that we got to bring our clothes, a sleeping mat (takes a lot of spruce to find bedding for 25-30 people), a water bottle a knife and a little box of typical survival equipment we put together during the instruction days.
In addition to that every group (we were divided in 5-6 person groups) got one bucket (mainly for fire safety) and one large and one smaller tin cans.

We cleaned up after ourselves as well as possible. Remaining food was to be put in one place to be composted and the water used for dishwashing and washing was poured into a dug hole... more »

Secret Swedish banknotes.
First made in early 1940s, the forgotten and found ones (supposed to have been destroyed) printed in England in 1951. In 1994 decided that such banknotes were no longer needed.

One reason for them was that an aggressor wouldn't know what they looked like in advance and thus couldn't forge banknotes.

Text in Swedish, but Google Translate works rather well, apart from "Riksbank" = national bank,
