So, I discovered today that somehow the version of my application that has been in Beta was magically moved to prod without my knowledge....sadly I now have to do a ton of damage control.
To other Android Developers, beware that your beta version doesn't magically make it to prod before you are ready for it...
shakes head
I concede that it is somehow possible that I did this myself, but I don't know how I could have....Just putting it out there to keep an eye on it.

Man, Android Studio takes a crap load of memory, currently sitting at 1.4gb of memory...geez, IntelliJ normally only consumes around half of that.
(edit: I originally stated that IntelliJ normally consumes around a third of what I am seeing Android Studio getting up to, it's actually closer to half)

So I found out how to control the LightBar on the front of the Chromebook Pixel.
I wrote a script to emulate the knight rider led effect and I also at one point made it so that the led displayed my Pixels battery life. Alas when the Chromebook goes to sleep the lightbar cannot be updated.
In order to play around with the lightbar your device needs to be in developer mode.
Once in developer mode drop into a shell and gain root.
There is a cool tool called "ectool" with ectool you can control the lightbar. Here are some examples on how to control it....
//Do the konami code
//just in case
ectool lightbar seq stop
ectool lightbar seq run
//run the actual sequence
ectool lightbar seq konami
//stop sequences so you can play with the lightbar
ectool lightbar seq stop
//turn the lights on ... more »

We're excited about today's launch of code.org. Built around the vision that every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to code, code.org is raising awareness around the need for students to learn programming skills and the opportunities available to them when they do. Google supports widespread access to CS education and we hope this new site helps bring more awareness about the importance of computing.
Visit www.code.org to learn more and to sign a pledge of support for all students to have access to great computing classes.

android.permission.ACCESS_SUPERUSER
Android has a way for apps to create and request various permissions via the AndroidManifest.xml file. This is how the list of permissions and features shown in an app's Google Play description is generated. Superuser should definitely be listed there. But currently, no such permission exists to be enforced, which is a terrible precedent:
You can download an app, and without your prior knowledge it can request Superuser access.
After talking with +Ricardo Cerqueira about this, we've decided on a strategy to ramp up and start enforcing this good practice.
0) Add a new permission with the Superuser, "android.permission.ACCESS_SUPERUSER".
1) The new Superuser will simply warn that the developer is not declaring "android.permission.ACCESS_SUPERUSER" in the manifest. (as seen below)
2) Add an o... more »

Google I/O 2013 registration opens on March 13th
We know you’ve been anxiously awaiting more details on registration for Google I/O 2013, which will be May 15-17, 2013. We appreciate your patience, and the wait is over!
Registration will open on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 7:00 AM PDT (GMT-7) and will remain open until tickets are sold out. Based on demand in previous years, we expect to sell out quickly. I have been building an IOS application, first time, and I have to say the StoryBoards are epic as hell....I really wish there was something like this to assist with Android Development.... (the UI builder doesn't come close to StoryBoarding...)
