Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych320,243It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00165

Robert Best2,685Google+ Relevance CircleWhat people of "relevance" do we have in common? Care to share? This big shared circle contains my most "relevant" circles according to G+. It also only contains people/profiles who post publicly (Either occasionally or prolifically).Do you recognize others in the list? (I think the probability is high)As far as I know, the visual beside the "Add people" button below shows you the 8 people from this circle who are most "relevant" to you. Also, if you click that add people button, the list inside is ordered by "relevance".Some people in this circle I know very well... others I haven't met at all (Besides interfacing with what they share publicly on G+) I'm curious, what circles do we share of high relevance? Give a few people shout outs! Let's have a random chat. You were likely notified of this post... I normally don't share to any of my specific circles, so as to avoid sending out unwanted notifications... But since I have you and your attention here... HELLO! Have we talked before? Why do you think I have you circled? What's of relevance for you? (Besides people on G+) If we do know each other... Have we been in touch lately? +Science on G+ is a well-curated and high quality community which is populated by science posts. Since we take the time to curate each and every post, look at content, check stories and references and ask for references and links for every story, it is verifiable science. The posts in the community are a repertoire of knowledge which is reaching encyclopedic proportions which links across many topics and includes scientific journals, organizations, writers, scientists and people who just love the journey of discovery which is science.

Our strength has been our mods network, and I send this out as a hat-tip to them and the stellar work they put in to bring you the best science content which you can trust. You will not find memes in this community, nor will you find jokes. But you will find science which is amazing and fascinating.

On April 6, marine scientist Tim Essington of the University of Washington, published a study in PNAS that found intense fishing does amplify forage fish collapses. He looked at patterns of 55 forage fish populations around the world over multiple decades and saw that collapses were much deeper and more frequent when fishing occurred.

You can find Essington's study on the PNAS website here: http://m.pnas.org/content/early/2015/04/01/1422020112.abstract

If you're interested in a short animation, news story, or fact sheet that explains this research more briefly, please visit http://www.pewtrusts.org

It's featured by many press articles today including "Science" here: http://news.sciencemag.org/climate/2015/04/sardines-hit-hard-overfishing

If you liked yesterday's Jupiter image....

Then wow... have I got something for you....

So if you're wondering what I'm talking about, yesterday I shared out an animation from multiple shots taken by the +Hubble Space Telescope of #Jupiter  and its three moons: #Europa   #Calisto  and #Io . (http://goo.gl/IRI4p7)

But as was revealed in yesterday's #HubbleHangout , the team was also able to resolve the tiny moons Amalthea & Thebe!! Below is a #gif  of multiple frames taken by Hubble.

To give you a bit of perspective, the average radius of Amalthea is about 85 kilometers while the average radius of Thebe is about 49 kilometers. I say average (or mean) radius, because they're so tiny... they're not really spherical... but that's realllllly tiny to be able to resolve not only the object, but their shadow!

+The TerraMar Project explains how tides may have clues to climate change....

Canadian and American scientists are teaming up with Australian researchers to study some of the largest waves on the planet in the Tasman Sea. Oh, and did we mention those waves are beneath the ocean's surface?

Also known as internal tides, these underwater waves are the result of water getting pushed against features on the seafloor such as ridges and mounts. The turbulence caused by these obstructions can create underwater waves hundreds of meters high that can be imperceptible at the surface but powerful enough to move whales and submarines. Scientists speculate internal tides can provide insights to climate change and fisheries. The Schmidt Ocean Institute has a great explanation on their website, and the R/V FALKOR will be involved in the expedition: http://www.schmidtocean.org/story/show/2963

According to Dr. Pete Sutton, University of Tasmania's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) and part of the research team, "The goal of this research expedition is to discover and measure the procession of those internal tidal waves and to document the various phenomena that occur when they impact the deep continental slopes. The internal tides and turbulent mixing that occurs in the deep sea off Tasmania is thought to affect the overall circulation of the global ocean. Understanding these processes is a critical step in predicting our climate." You can find more of his comments on the University of Tasmania's website: http://www.imas.utas.edu.au/right-column-content/whats-new3/news-imas/tracking-the-deep-ocean-tides-of-the-tasman-sea2

Roosevelt : Little Franklin Delano Roosevelt sits primly on a stool, his white skirt spread smoothly over his lap, his hands clasping a hat trimmed with a marabou feather. Shoulder-length hair and patent leather party shoes complete the ensemble. Social convention of 1884, when FDR was photographed at 30 months, dictated that boys wore dresses until age 6 or 7, also the time of their first haircut. Franklin’s outfit was considered gender-neutral.

How conventions came to be : Why have young children’s clothing styles changed so dramatically? How did we end up with two “teams”—boys in blue and girls in pink? "It’s really a story of what happened to neutral clothing,” says Paoletti, who has explored the meaning of children’s clothing for 30 years. For centuries, she says, children wore dainty white dresses up to age 6. “What was once a matter of practicality—you dress your baby in white dresses and diapers; white cotton can be bleached—became a matter of ‘Oh my God, if I dress my baby in the wrong thing, they’ll grow up perverted,’ ” Paoletti says.

Pink for boys - since it is a stronger color : a June 1918 article from the trade publication Earnshaw's Infants' Department said, “The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.”

It all changed in 1985 : Prenatal testing was a big reason for the change. Expectant parents learned the sex of their unborn baby and then went shopping for “girl” or “boy” merchandise. (“The more you individualize clothing, the more you can sell,” Paoletti says.) The pink fad spread from sleepers and crib sheets to big-ticket items such as strollers, car seats and riding toys. Affluent parents could conceivably decorate for baby No. 1, a girl, and start all over when the next child was a boy.

Gendered roles : “One of the ways women thought that girls were kind of lured into subservient roles as women is through clothing,” says Paoletti. “ ‘If we dress our girls more like boys and less like frilly little girls . . . they are going to have more options and feel freer to be active.’ ”

Gold
This one is easy, it is gold, the shiny metal that has been a symbol of wealth since it was first discovered.
Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au and atomic number 79. It is a dense, soft, malleable, and ductile metal with an attractive, bright yellow color and luster that is maintained without tarnishing in air or water. Chemically, gold is a transition metal and a group 11 element. It is one of the least reactive chemical elements, solid under standard conditions. The metal therefore occurs often in free elemental (native) form, as nuggets or grains in rocks, in veins and in alluvial deposits.  ⓐ

This metal has been a valuable and highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since long before the beginning of recorded history. Gold standards have sometimes been monetary policies, but were widely supplanted by fiat currency starting in the 1930s. The last gold certificate and gold coin currencies were issued in the U.S. in 1932. In Europe, most countries left the gold standard with the start of World War I in 1914 and, with huge war debts, did not return to gold as a medium of exchange. The value of gold is rooted in its medium rarity, easily handling, easy smelting, non-corrosiveness, distinct color and non-reactiveness to other elements; qualities most other metals lack.  ⓐ

Besides its widespread monetary and symbolic functions, gold has many practical uses in dentistry, electronics, and other fields. Its high malleability, ductility, resistance to corrosion and most other chemical reactions, and conductivity of electricity has led to many uses, including electric wiring, colored-glass production, and gold leafing.  ⓐ

Most of the Earth's gold probably lies at its core, the metal's high density having made it sink there in the planet's youth. Virtually all discovered gold is considered to have been deposited later by meteorites that contained the element, with the asteroid that formed Vredefort crater having been implicated in the formation of the largest gold mining region on earth, Witwatersrand basin  ⓐ

Gold has been used for more than 75 years to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). (Indeed, gold preparations are among the original medications targeting this form of arthritis). Before its use in RA, gold was used to treat infections, including tuberculosis. Gold is one of a class of medications known as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), because it not only decreases the pain and swelling of arthritis but also can prevent joint damage and disability. While gold can be very effective at suppressing the signs and symptoms of RA for some patients, it is used less frequently as new, better tolerated medications have been identified.

Frankincense, also called olibanum
Derived from tree sap, or gum resin, both frankincense and myrrh are prized for their alluring fragrance. Frankincense is a milky white resin extracted from species of the genus Boswellia, which thrive in arid, cool areas of the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa and India. The finest and most aromatic of this species is Boswellia sacra, a small tree that grows in Somalia, Oman and Yemen. These plants, which grow to a height of 16 feet (5 meters), have papery bark, sparse bunches of paired leaves, and flowers with white petals and a yellow or red center  ⓑ

The English word is derived from Old French "franc encens" (i.e. high quality incense)[1] and is used in incense and perfumes.  There are four main species of Boswellia that produce true frankincense and resin from each of the four is available in various grades. The grades depend on the time of harvesting. The resin is hand-sorted for quality.

I found two dissertations on Frankincense and they are a fascinating, very detailed discussion of Frankincense and its uses. More than you ever wanted to know about this sweet smelling incense.

Myrrh
Myrrh is the aromatic resin of a number of small, thorny tree species of the genus Commiphora, which is an essential oil termed an oleoresin. Myrrh resin is a natural gum. It can also be ingested by mixing it with wine.  ⓓ

When a tree wound penetrates through the bark and into the sapwood, the tree bleeds a resin. Myrrh gum, like frankincense, is such a resin. When people harvest myrrh, they wound the trees repeatedly to bleed them of the gum. Myrrh gum is waxy, and coagulates quickly. After the harvest, the gum becomes hard and glossy. The gum is yellowish, and may be either clear or opaque. It darkens deeply as it ages, and white streaks emerge ⓓ

Myrrh's uses are similar to those of frankincense, with which it is often combined in decoctions, liniments and incense ⓓ

Myrrh is a common ingredient of tooth powders. Myrrh and borax in tincture can be used as a mouth-wash. A compound tincture, or horse tincture, using myrrh is used in veterinary practice for healing wounds. Meetiga, the trade-name of Arabian Myrrh, is more brittle and gummy than that of the Somalian variety and does not have the latter's white markings. ⓓ

The oleo gum resin obtained from Commiphora species, myrrh is well known as a fragrance used in incense and in perfumes. It is also used in traditional medicine for treating inflammation, stomach problems, asthma and other bronchial conditions.  Studies indicate that myrhh has anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, anti-trichomonas  and antipyretic effects in vitro and in mice  ⓔ

What is W-band wireless? : The ground-breaking £2.8 million TWEETHER project, funded by Horizon 2020, the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever, will set an important milestone in 'millimeter wave technology' for high speed wireless mobile and fixed point Internet.Millimeter waves - extremely high frequency waves found in the spectrum between microwaves and infrared waves - are deemed to be the most promising and cost effective solution for the future.

Promising : The TWEETHER project will result in a powerful and compact transmission hub, based on a novel travelling wave tube power amplifier and an advanced chipset in a compact terminal, with performance far outweighing any other technology. After three years of design and development, the system will be tested in a real operating environment.

New idea : Professor Paoloni said the answer was the exploitation of unused portions of the spectrum but at higher frequencies. The recent outstanding advancements in the field of vacuum electron devices and solid state electronics using millimetre wave frequencies opens the route for the breakthrough in wireless high speed data communications.

Why Nanomaterials are fascinating (Or how a dog becomes a cat, becomes a hummingbird) : Well, any material can be a Nanomaterial. A Nanomaterial is purely something reduced to a size of 1 to 100 nms. So why the fuss? For one, unlike macro materials, Nanomaterials can be two dimensional. As we get smaller and smaller, they exhibit properties which confound us.  One must remember though, these are not chemically changed. All that is done is the size of the particles is made smaller and smaller.

In Nanotechnology, what is important about materials is NOT really what they are made of, but how small they are. This is different than every other materials age in human history.

In Nanotechnology, what is important about materials is NOT really what they are made of, but how small they are. This is different than every other materials age in human history.

Magnetism example : Atoms can have magnetic moments... Why is this? Due to the spin of unpaired electrons. A magnetic moment aligns with an external field. Let's take the example of CoCr (Cobalt Chrome Alloy). At the macro size, it displays no magnetism. This is because when at the macrosize, domains cancel each other out. These are called 'Bulk Ferromagnets' and can be electromagnets. So these sizes do not get highly magnetized and can be called permanent magnets (if enough of the domains align in one direction). Let's say these behave like Dogs..

As you go smaller, from 20nm grain size to 80 nm grain size, The magnetism in this powder will depend on volume. It is harder to magnetize these particles, but when these are magnetized, they resist going back to their original state. These are single domain magnets and once magnetized, they stay that way; though they are easy to magnetize and demagnetize. Let's say these behave like Cats....

When you go down to even smaller size, the ferromagnets are smaller than 20 nm in size, they are very, very small, not much bigger than molecules. They are easier to magnetize and flip. So easy to magnetize and flip, that this is a property used in MRI tests. Superparamagnets have fluctuating magnetic moments with no applied field, but with applied field become magnetized easily. These are called superparamagnets.  Let's say these behave like hummingbirds.

New Biodegradable Suture Anchors

When a person has a bad shoulder injury like a torn tendon, surgery is required.  The surgeon will use anchor screws for sutures that attach to the bone to do the repair.  These anchor screws have to be strong enough to carry the load until the body has a chance to heal.  Up to now surgeons have been using materials that need to be left in place or removed after the healing process is over.  "Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials in Bremen, Germany have been working on durable implants that degrade and slowly dissolve into the body for further secretion."

No other joint in the human body is as highly mobile as is the shoulder. However, it is also very sensitive and prone to injury, with athletes being particularly affected. The most common complaints include tendon rupture, which have to be treated surgically. The surgeon fastens the cracks using suture anchors. Such implants used to be made of titanium or non-degradable polymers – with the disadvantages that either they remain in the body even after healing has occurred or doctors have to remove them in a second procedure.  ⓐ

The researchers developed anchor screws that are designed to slowly biodegrade while keeping their strength as long as needed. They are made from a metal - ceramic composite and manufactured using a powder metallurgy process.

These materials are to be gradually absorbed by the body while, at the same time, new bone tissue is formed. Ideally, the degree of degradation is adapted to the bone growth so that the degradation of the implant meshes with the bone formation. For this reason, the scientists are developing materials with specifically adjustable degradation. The challenge: The implants have to be mechanically stable enough during the entire healing process so that they are able to fix the bone in place. At the same time, they cannot have any allergenic effects or cause inflammation. The researchers at IFAM are relying on metal-ceramic composites.  ⓐ

A metal component based on an iron alloy is being combined with beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) as the ceramic component. “Iron alloys corrode slowly and ensure high mechanical strength, while ceramic decomposes quickly, stimulates bone growth and aids the ingrowth of the implant”, Imgrund says to explain the advantages of this material combination.  ⓐ  (Dr. Philipp Imgrund, manager of the Medical Technology and Life Sciences business field at IFAM.)

Powder injection molding is used to manufacture the material composite due to its ability to produce complex structures cost-effectively and in large numbers. Properties such as density and porosity can be controlled selectively – an important factor, since high density and low porosity result in high mechanical strengths. The process also allows materials, available as powders, to be mixed in any proportion prior to processing.  ⓑ

The materials are available as powders and can be mixed in any proportion prior to processing. But what proportion is the right one? In laboratory experiments, the researchers have found the optimum composition of the materials for the suture anchor. The demonstrator consists of 60 percent iron and 40 percent ceramic. “It is important to determine the right amount of ceramics as a function of the powder amount. If the proportion is too high, the material will be brittle. On the other hand, the tricalcium phosphate accelerates the degradation of the implant,” says Imgrund. The researchers have succeeded in doubling the degradation rate from 120 to 240 micrometers per year in the laboratory model. The shoulder anchor would be absorbed by the body within one to two years.  ⓐ

If you think the weather’s acting strange, you’re correct. Extreme weather in the United States is trending upward, and human-caused climate change has already been blamed for much of it – most recently in connection with the California drought.

But along with extreme weather we’re also getting extreme contrasts. What on Earth is going on when New York gets endless rain and San Francisco none, and when one part of the country is freezing while another suffers under record heat?

You guessed it, rising temperatures have something to do with it – and here’s how.

Rain patterns are changing

In the Northeast, the combination of more moisture in the atmosphere from a warmer world and changes in circulation patterns are bringing more rain. In the Southwest, meanwhile, rainfall is suppressed by a northward expansion of high pressure in the subtropics.

The crippling drought now plaguing California is due to a persistent high pressure system off of the coast that is deflecting storms away from the region. A recent study shows that these systems are much more likely to occur with human-caused climate change.

Rain is more intense

Heavy downpours are controlled by cloud mechanisms and moisture content, which are both changing as global temperatures rise. Clouds that can dump a lot of rain are more common in a warmer atmosphere.

More evaporation has led to more moisture in the atmosphere which, in turn, leads to more intense rainfall when it rains. That helps explain why the entire U.S. is experiencing more heavy downpours – even in the drought-stricken West.

Droughts are taking hold

Rain and evaporation will determine how moist the soil will be. So although evaporation is increasing nationwide due to warmer temperatures, higher precipitation in the Northeast yields a net increase in soil moisture in that part of the country.

In the Southwest, on the other hand, the drop in overall precipitation brings drier conditions that spawn or magnify drought. As the soil there dries out, the incoming sunlight will heat the ground instead of evaporating water from the soil. This creates a vicious cycle of more heat and less rain.

Flooding is more common

The potential for flooding, meanwhile, depends a lot on what's going on with the soil. The higher the soil moisture content, the higher the chance that there will be more runoff from rainfall.

Because soil moisture is increasing in the Northeast, flooding events are on the rise. Fortunately for the region, many heavy rain storms occur in the summer and fall when soil moisture is low and the ground can absorb more water.

On the other hand, the sea level has risen by a foot since the 1900s in the Northeast. That, in turn, contributes to more flooding.

Disaster costs are also rising – but there is hope

In 2013, intense storms, severe regional drought, and extreme flooding led to more than $9 billion in disaster costs in the U.S. alone. It’s uncertain what the total bill was if you factor in ongoing agriculture, human health and infrastructure losses from changing weather conditions

Unless we curb emissions of heat-trapping gases, scientists expect these trends to continue and worsen – and the contrast between wet and dry areas of the U.S. will likely become even sharper. Our hope now is that the push for climate action amps up so we can finally set ourselves on a better path for the future.___

Moving all four wheels in the same direction causes forward or backward movement, running the wheels on one side in the opposite direction to those on the other side causes rotation of the vehicle, and running the wheels on one diagonal in the opposite direction to those on the other diagonal causes sideways movement. Combinations of these wheel motions allow for vehicle motion in any direction with any vehicle rotation.

Theft

So sci fi August is over for me. While browsing the hashtag for others' works, I came across a community moderator who, instead of resharing two of my images, took poor quality screen shots of my work, cropped them so my old JMD signature I used to use on my images was really visible, and then posted to her community.

My text is there, my name is there, but the image is her screen shot rather than my work. She hasn't responded.

Lame.

This image, btw, it's #SOOC, from my S5.

Have a good day/evening/morning!

Science Posts : are often about new discoveries or about science and related technology. I post a lot within this area. I have often found that while my posts have engagement, it gets hard to explain why the commenter has to stick to the science.

Why can't I talk about my experience : Of course you can, but one has to preface it by saying it is my experience, or its not something backed by research. And be ready to be called on it. Very often commenters will continue to talk about their experiences as if that 'proves' something. Experiences do not make science. It is an experience. What you observe may not be what another person observes. Or it may not be repeatable. (See the Scientific method here http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/scientific_method )

How to make your point scientifically : Science posts may be wrong. That is the nature of science. Sometimes the science may be based on hypothesis which may have counterpoints, but these are continuously tested and refined. Theories are based on observations, so they have a body of work behind them. These are not 'guesses.' Be respectful to the original poster, since often science posts have a lot of work and research which has gone into it. Make your point with research from reputable sites and link back to the research. If you are not sure about it's veracity, ask an expert (There are many on Google Plus).

Does a study make it true : This one is fraught with issues. Often studies may not have a large enough sample size. Or the conclusions one may draw from a study may not be correct. Most scientists are extremely wary of making assertions, even in their own field. They know that there are a lot of variables which need to be taken into account. Science begins with skepticism. Every study needs to be evaluated.

Making your point : Oftentimes, you can make your point with just one comment on a post. Sometimes you make need to make a followup comment. Don't keep repeating your point, making the same assertion again and again. Talking over people does not make you right. It only makes them lose respect for what you are trying to say. Calling someone names is the lowest form of engagement. Do not let it sink to that level.

'Converting' someone : Don't comment to 'convert' someone to your point of view. Science is not about who talks louder or says it more often or cites more studies. Its about relevance, facts, study and repetition. (See my earlier post here How to do science : https://plus.google.com/110884604033336753419/posts/VJrxUt6gUmi )

Science doesn't play favorites : Mentioning Einstein does not make you right. Any scientist would tell you that there are things they do not know. The journey in science is the finding out. One has to live with things which are still not known, and scientists are the best at this way of being.

Join in the journey of finding out, rather than knowing : Science is fascinating. It is incredible. It really is. There is so much I learn just by reading and writing (researching) about how things work, its really something everyone should indulge in. It's brain food. Knowing something is the end of asking. Revel in the journey, not the end.

This is an iterative process and involves external checks and balances, data recording and rigor. The first such process recorded (from Wikipedia) In the 7th century BCE, Daniel, a Jewish captive of the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, conducted a scientific experiment complete with a hypothesis, a control group, a treatment group, and a conclusion.

Is there a way to find verifiable information : Sure, but it still needs to have rigor. A youtube reference is not a good benchmark. Most news sites are also not good indicators. Reputed science sites, reference papers and peer reviewed publications are good places to look. Even then not all of them are the best quality.

Why shouldn't I believe in flying chariots? The Nazca lines prove that chariots can fly : You are free to believe whatever you want. But remember, it is not something anyone will take seriously since your claim is based on belief, not proof or a method which involves rigor, repeatability and removal of bias.

Who should I ask? : Ask people who are experts in their field. There are quality scientists, chemists, biologists, physicists here on G+.... reach out and ask them. There are also sources like askamathematician where you can post your queries. They really do respond.

We've grown considerably in a little over a year and at this point we could really use two people manning the shop and two people doing on-site/remote support. There are only three of us though! As you might imagine, it's stretching us very thin. We've got too much work but not enough revenue to justify hiring a part time person to lighten the load.

That's where Kiva comes in. It's a social lending site that allows people and organizations to get loans of up to $5000. Anyone who wants to support a project will eventually get their money back once the loan is repaid.

For us this relatively small amount of money will mean we can hire a part timer for our shop. That will mean that my co-owner +Yochai Gal will be freed up to do more on-site work (my primary job) which will generate more revenue. In the shop it would mean that +Matt Gabrenya would get some breathing room as well. Eventually we hope to make this part timer a member of our coop which would obviously be good for them as well!

In short it would give us the small boost we need to really get ourselves established!

So What Do You Want From Me?

All I ask is that if you can lend us even five bucks it would be wonderful. I know that times are tough so even if you can't lend, a reshare would be fantastic too!

Thanks in advance to all of you. From the amazing crew that participates in my #gqotd  to the writers and assorted folks who follow my #gsotd  posts to the friends I've made via Hangouts I feel grateful to you all regardless!___

via +SciFi Author: Lacerant Plainer .... if you like the art, do buy some. +Mara Mascaro makes some wonderful art. And plus it's wolverine!

Mara's art for sale

So. I have an appointment for a so-called ENS (Empty - Nose Syndrome) specialist somewhere in Germany at the beginning of Semptember, and it's gonna cost me 650ish euros (for medical exams) + Idontknowhowmuch for trip&hotel. Probably around 1000 euros.

I don't have that much handy at the moment (I have so many damn medical expenses...), and I was doubtful whether to  go or not. I talked with +Di Cleverly and she suggested me to make some drawings of Gplus users and sell them.
So... I thought: It's been awhile since I did some art, and it would probably do me good (it would help me not being obsessed with my nose issues all the time).
What if someone wants to buy some art from me and donate for my exams? Would anyone want to buy a chibi portrait of themselves for their profile pictures?

The formula could be something like this:

- €10 A quick Post-it mini drawing (only digital) NEW;

- €20 for a quick pen sketch (I can send you the original drawing, if you want - if you pay S&H);
- €50 for a more detailed black/white drawing (same as before);
- €85 for a pencil/marker drawing (original sent if you want...blah blah blah)

You can pay directly on my Paypal account: phiria@fastwebnet.it specifying what kind of drawing you'd like, and linking your g+ page (and pictures).
Thank you very much for everything :)

From +Jonah Miller .... how planets form.

How Planets Form

Many months ago, +Richard Green  posted an article  that described how life on a toroidal planet like the one shown in figure 2 would work. (You can find the post here: https://plus.google.com/101584889282878921052/posts/3g1HbzqGNok) The discussion in the comments eventually led to speculation as to whether or not it’s possible for such a toroidal structure to actually form. That discussion is what inspired this post. Today, I’ll tell you about the nebular hypothesis [1], astrophysicists’ current best theory about how planets form. (Fun historical fact: One of the first people to propose the nebular hypothesis was philosopher Immanuel Kant.)

(Those who wish to view this post in blog form can find it here: http://www.thephysicsmill.com/2014/06/01/planets-form/)

In The Beginning, Dust

Our solar system probably started as a huge cloud of gas and dust, like a nebula (hence the name “nebular hypothesis”) [2]. The particles of dust and wisps of gas gravitationally attracted each other, and other time, the denser clouds of matter collapsed into themselves. As the density of each cloud increased, so did its temperature. Eventually it became so dense and so hot that it became what we call a _protostar_—a young, vigorous, and confused star---like the one shown in figure 3.

But not all of the gas and dust had become part of the protostar yet. As the protostar began to age, it began to attract and eat the remainder of the gas. Over time, as the remaining gas fell into the star, it formed a disk, as shown below. Near where the disk touched the star, the compression of its gas superheated it, generating jets of energy pointing out from the star. (For experts: The reason the gas formed a disk is because it had to jet its angular momentum before it could fall in.)

It's All In The Disk

Let’s talk about the disk some. For reasons that will soon become clear, these disks are called protoplanetary disks [4]. Not everything in the disk orbited around the star at the same speed. As dust and gas particles whizzed past each other, sometimes they collided…and sometimes they stuck to each other, forming bigger particles.

Over millions of years and trillions of sticky collisions, these dust particles grew to several kilometers in diameter, forming small objects that we call planetesimals [5]. At this size, these planetesimals had a gravitational pull strong enough to attract many dust particles, allowing them to grow even faster. Very likely, planetesimals also collided with each other to form even larger objects. Eventually, these bodies were large enough to be called planets. Figure 3 shows a protostar surrounded by a protoplanetary disk.

This description tells us that toroidal planets cannot form. Planetesimals grow in size from collisions with dust and with each other. It seems very unlikely that they would form a shape other than “roughly spherical.”

The End of the Disk

After enough time passed and the protostar had feasted sufficiently, it would begin to emit a blast of light and subatomic particles called the solar wind [6]. This pressure blew away all remaining gas and dust in the disk that hadn’t already coalesced into large objects—leaving behind the collection of planets we know as the solar system.

Evidence

Obviously, we can’t look back in time to see how our own solar system formed. But we can look out into space to try and find solar systems that are in the process of forming. Protostars are easy to capture on film because the jets that they fire have a characteristic shape. We call them Herbig-Haro objects [7], and they produce some staggeringly beautiful images. See the photos in figure 4.

We can also observe the protoplanetary disks that are feeding the protostar. At first, they were hard to spot and we had to use some fancy image enhancement techniques to see them, as in figure 5. The top row shows the unenhanced images and the bottom row shows the enhanced images.

However, the Hubble got an upgrade, and we’ve been looking a while. We now have some much better images. Look at figure 6. See those little tadpole-like objects? Those are protoplanetary disks.

Hubble has now captured more than 150 images of protostars and their jets and disks. For your viewing pleasure, you can find a few more in figure 7.

Sadly, we’re far too distant to see if the disks contain planetesimals.

Issues

I want to emphasize that the nebular hypothesis of planet formation is currently still a hypothesis. It’s the best description we have for how planets formed in our solar system, but it still has some important issues that need to be worked out.

For example, we still don’t know how gas giants like Jupiter form. The planetesimal description relies on the planetesimals being made of rock, so this only describes the formation of terrestrial planets like Earth and Mars. Additionally, the nebular hypothesis predicts that planets should emerge from the disk in very erratic orbits. It’s not clear how they form their current elliptical orbits, which are very regular.

Only time will tell, I suppose, if the nebular hypothesis is correct.

Nothing Is More Fun than a Hypercube of Monkeys To reduce symmetries of a tesseract put a monkey at the center of each cube - how is that for a scientific recipe? Well you do end up cooking a 3D-printed sculpture of a 4D object. But jokes aside - math groups and symmetries are related and turns out a so called Quaternion Group was never visualized as a symmetric object. This is because the object should be 4-dimensional. But even those can be visualized as 3D projections and even 3D printed.

From very fun and smart Henry Segerman and Vi Hart:

On Reaching 200,00 Members

We have had one of those numerical milestones here in SoG+.  We now have over 200,000 members and are the 23rd largest community on Google+.  We don't have lots of pretty pictures, or jokes, or memes/words of wisdom.  We  just have science.  And you folks really like science.

We want to say thanks to all of you. So many people have worked to make this a reputable and valuable place to get the latest science news and research.

The owners and moderators all work hard and a big thank you to every single one of you. We want to single out +Peter Edenist  one of the original owners and the man who set the standard for quality posts that this community has come to expect.

We also want to thank some of the regular contributors, and please if we forgot your name, forgive us.  Here is a short list of some of our great longtimecontrib... more »

Why plants are fascinating : I was introduced to Botany only for the last few years. The more I read about plants, the more I was amazed. To start with I read about how complex some of the genomes were. While this itself did not mean anything, it was something that drew me into reading about plants. Here is a compendium of flora-related information which has surprised and delighted me! We now know plants use the quantum nature of light and harness the power of our star, they communicate using chemical and electrical signals, they use insects to do their bidding, etc. etc..... some plants just firebomb their neighbours, like the Australian eucalyptus.

From The New Yorker: Karban told me that, in the nineteen-eighties, people working on plant communication faced some of the same outrage that scientists working on plant intelligence (a term he cautiously accepts) do today. “This stuff hasb... more »

From The New Yorker: Karban told me that, in the nineteen-eighties, people working on plant communication faced some of the same outrage that scientists working on plant intelligence (a term he cautiously accepts) do today. “This stuff has been enormously contentious,” he says, referring to the early days of research into plant communication, work that is now generally accepted. “It took me years to get some of these papers published. People would literally be screaming at one another at scientific meetings.” He added, “Plant scientists in general are incredibly conservative. We all think we want to hear novel ideas, but we don’t, not really.” (http://goo.gl/7OX3tN)

A Science Fiction World : Smithsonian hosts  'The Future is here' : The invite list has some awesome names such as Brian Greene,  Adam Steltzner, Rich Devaul etc. The names are like a who's who of futurists and scientists. But can we do a guessing game? What will they talk about? Where will the conversation go? While one cannot predict what they would bring forth, here is my list of things one would like to hear about....

Transhumanism : But naturally. With people like David Brin around, it would have to include all forms of transhumanism, Cyborgs, remotely controlled beings, robots with artificial DNA etc. See an earlier post here http://goo.gl/LU23b3

Living Quarters : Quite literally living buildings. Self-sustaining and self-powered. I would definitely talk about these. See earlier posts http://goo.gl/tMRLGj and http://goo.gl/KfO5qn

Economical way to go into space : With a much lower carbon footprint. There are already a lot of technologies in the works, and I posted a story on my blog based on some of the science which exists - http://goo.gl/u2ekqZ (I would also include dynamic soaring, fusion power, the railgun cum scramjet, but the laser based story is something which I think has the best potential).

Power : Reduce cost of power through fusion (http://goo.gl/1DW0bD), Space based solar power (http://goo.gl/5yi0Gr), Luna ring (http://goo.gl/a71BCC), Biomimicry (http://goo.gl/lXWSnh) and using microbes (http://goo.gl/I871zI). Alternate energy post here http://goo.gl/vBUr5a.

Redefining transportation : Virus powered cars (http://goo.gl/rpz3VE), The hyperloop perhaps (http://goo.gl/bm6Nts). ETT is still waiting for us (http://goo.gl/im2KAu) and so much more!

Nanobots and Nanotechnology : Nanobot post here (http://goo.gl/4VT0bG) and Nanomachine mimics nature's protien factory (http://goo.gl/JdzoSN). More recently a post on Material science, nanotechnology and biology meet here (http://goo.gl/XNU2ui).

There are so many new areas I have missed out like 3D printing, self-assembling robots and nanobots, Artifical DNA, Stem cell research, work on graphene. What is your guess??

For more details look at this post shared by +Thomas Dolby  here http://goo.gl/KUFNts
