Fiery Gates, Sunset at Gates of the Valley (Yosemite)

For  #mountainmonday  a shot of Gates of the Valley with some extra-fiery alpenglow.  I almost didn't stop at this spot--I'd been shooting Horsetail Fall that evening, and when the light show was over--or so I thought--I packed up and started to make the loop around the valley back to Yosemite Lodge.  Decided to pull into the parking area at Gates just to see how the light looked, and ended up making a mad dash for a spot on the river to catch some before it faded.

After I was safely parked and trying to set up my camera, I could hear 10-12 other photographers come screaming into the parking lot behind me and making a crazed dash to set up--we are Pavlovian critters when it comes to great light!  I missed the best of the light--when I first pulled in, Sentinel Rock looked like it was lit up for a Hollywood premier. It'... more »

Sunrise, Court of the Patriarchs (Zion National Park)

I should never shoot before I'm adequately caffeinated. Rode with my friend that morning, in her white Jeep. Figured it made sense to just take one vehicle. Totally forgot that my tripod LIVES in my white Jeep (I usually only take my bag in when I'm at a hotel), so when I stumbled out half-asleep with my camera pack slung over one shoulder, IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME to retrieve my tripod from my white Jeep before climbing into her white Jeep. So naturally, we had AMAZING light that morning, and I couldn't do middle-of-the-river shots without my TRIPOD. So, I cropped out the crappy foreground so I could at least share some of that pretty, pretty light. I am a danger to myself (and my photography) until I get that first dose of caffeine.

Back from Utah/Arizona, and closing out what's been my busiest six (or so) months, probably ever.  Visited lower Antelope Canyon again, which is just like crack for landscape photographers (and almost always results in sharing way too many freaking slot pics, but IMA SHARE THEM WITH Y'ALL over the coming weeks)--also spent some time in Zion, and explored Kolob Terrace for the first time.  Stunning place, and so different from the main valley.  Fall color was long past when I got there, but some fog rolled in and provided a little storybook atmosphere, as you can see.

In other news, I've now confirmed a second showing of my Owens Lake Project!  It'll go up for two months (March-April/2015) at the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitors Center outside of Lone Pine in partnership with Friends of the Inyo.  I've had a crush on that visitors center and its gorgeous exhibit spaceever... more »

It's been many months since I've been able to get out and shoot for myself--most of my work this year has been on my Owens Lake Project, so having a weekend away to enjoy fall color in the eastern Sierra was a much-needed respite.  And SO nice to get back into the creative swing of things.  This image is from Bishop Canyon, North Fork.  Happy autumn!

Early Winter Storm Over Sierra Crest (Eastern Sierra)

Anybody who's traveled along Highway 395 in the Eastern Sierra knows this pair of small abandoned cabins well.  We'd spent the night tent camping in Lundy Canyon and woke to about 6" of snow on the ground, so we quickly broke camp and headed south (while our little Hyundai could still get out with no problems).  When I saw the leading edge of the storm over the sierra crest, I had to stop and get some pics.  To this day, these are the best conditions I've ever witnessed at this location.

Lower Owens River delta, Eastern Sierra.  This is one of my favorite spots in the Owens Valley.  It's just above the inlet to Owens Lake, and has been quickly coming back to life since the rewatering of the lower Owens began in late 2006.  A fire a couple of years ago charred the cottonwoods you see here--which is a benchmark species for keeping the river healthy--but hopefully it'll overcome this setback.

Stand by, please....

After being CONSUMED by my Owens Lake Project for the last six months (the exhibit for which just closed--but will show up again in the coming months in another public exhibit, so stay tuned for that), then another month or two consumed by a bout of the flu and various family-related trips, I AM FINALLY GETTING BACK TO SHOOTING.  This has been the longest dry spell since I first seriously picked up the camera.  So during all that crazy busy stuff, I also neglected most of my social media hang outs, including this one.  For those of you still following me, THANK YOU!  I look forward to sharing new pics very soon.

In the meantime, here's a little treat from last weekend.  We were up in Monterey visiting family at the same time migrating humpback whales were swimming VERY close to shore to dine on anchovies.  It's impressive enough being able to see themat al... more »

In the meantime, here's a little treat from last weekend.  We were up in Monterey visiting family at the same time migrating humpback whales were swimming VERY close to shore to dine on anchovies.  It's impressive enough being able to see them at all from shore, but to have them lunge-feeding and whomping their tail flukes (to stun schools of anchovy) a mere 50 yards from shore--well, that's just downright awesome.  TGIF!___

I need your help!  All the details are in the link, but I'm faced with some pretty big and unexpected expenses for my upcoming exhibit after my external storage drive died and took all my images with it.  Data recovery is going to cost me almost as much as making the prints for the exhibit, so I've started a GoFundMe campaign to help.  ANY donation amount will help, and donations of $100 or more will get you a matted print of your choice of my images.

If you can't donate right now, will you please share the link to help get the word out?  That helps, too!  Thank you so much!

For #wildlifewednesday (curated by +Mike Spinak ), here's a pic I took this weekend of a burrowing owl on the shore of Owens Lake in the eastern Sierra.  These birds are only seen rarely at the lake, and are considered a "species of special concern."  I and a birder friend will be monitoring the area over the coming weeks to see if this is a breeding pair, and if they've decided to claim this spot for a nest.  If so, I hope to capture even more images of them.

Go get yourself some gear!  Great sale--thanks to +Michael Frye for the heads-up.

Borrowlenses Sale

Borrowlenses.com is having a sale, with 25% off all of their rental equipment – a good time to test that camera or lens you’ve been wanting to try! The sale only lasts until midnight tonight. Here's a link:

http://bit.ly/1gq0R22

I’ve used Borrowlenses many times to test equipment, and found their prices reasonable and service excellent. This panned image of Ross's Geese from the San Joaquin Valley was made recently with a rented Canon 6D. I also just finished testing a Sony A7r, and I’ll have more to say about both of these cameras soon.___Go get yourself some gear!  Great sale--thanks to +Michael Frye for the heads-up.

I actually prefer the soft, un-fiery light I got on Horsetail that night, but I can never resist a shot from this location if the light is nice.___

After the Fire (Horsetail Fall, Yosemite).  I did manage to get some of the crazy, fiery light on Horsetail last weekend (which I'll share eventually), but I ended up liking this shot even more.  The light was off the water, but the fall still stands out, and all the light and color had gone soft and pastel.

Happy Friday!  Hope everyone has a wonderful, productive weekend!

Minimalist Dunes, White Sands National Monument (NM)

I really enjoy the opportunity to make minimalist and/or painterly images when the setting is right, and White Sands was perfect for this.  We were fortunate to have light, wispy clouds throughout the afternoon, which softened the sky just enough to make for fruitful shooting under the low light of mid-winter.  It took a couple of hours of exploring the dunes to find what I was looking for, which is what you see in this shot–a minimalist criss-cross of two white dunes under an azure sky.

Starting to go through my photos to decide on my 10 Best for the year, and thinking back on the wonderful journeys I've been able to take this year.  Much gratitude.

Aoraki Monochrome

Also known as Mt. Cook, the beautiful and impressive peak in New Zealand's southern alps. I was only able to catch a few shots of this beauty before the clouds took over, but I really like the black and what treatment to show off its imposing grandeur.

I'm proud to announce my new 2014 Visionary Light calendar.  I think it's my best calendar yet, and it's MORE AFFORDABLE THIS YEAR!  (thanks to using a new publisher)  It's just $16.99, and you can use the code FREESHIP through 12/10 for free shipping and guaranteed delivery by Christmas.  It includes a previously unpublished image of mine from New Zealand, which will soon be released as my first-ever limited edition print (so stay tuned for that).  You can preview the entire calendar and purchase here:  http://www.lulu.com/shop/robin-black/visionary-light-2014/calendar/product-21328005.html

Glad that life is slowing down a little now that the exhibit is up and running at +G2Gallery (if you're in the area, please stop by!).

For #treetuesday here's an image of one of the very best trees I know--a corkscrew-y ancient bristlecone high in the White Mountains.  After several visits with a cloudless, flat sky, I was delighted to get a bit of color on this evening.
