I had an epic hike over the lava flows at Kalapana Hawaii with my friend Bruce Omori today. Man oh man what a hike. At one point we were walking on a crust under which was still hot glowing through the cracks red hot lava. The heat was pretty intense.

As we walked out across the black lava field it rained on us once or twice but cleared up quickly showing an awesome Milky Way overhead. It was quite magical. We made it to the ocean entry just before sunrise which allowed us to get set up before the good light came. It was totally dark when we arrived. #hawaii #bigisland #kalapana #lava #nightphotography #volcano

Pele's Revenge.

I shed blood for this shot. As I was hiking around Kilauea crater tonight I fell into a vertical lava tube. I lost some skin from my shins, but  man it was worth it.

Here's another Oregon aurora photo from Friday evening. This was up on Lolo Pass when I was just checking to see if I could see anything. I got out of my car, looked at the northern horizon and my heart starting beating. I couldn't get my camera set up fast enough.

One of my reasons for being.

This is the oldest of my two sons Christopher.

Chris was my very first child. I was the first to touch and hold him as I delivered him into this world. There are not many fathers that can say that. I can still remember the overwhelming feeling of joy, love and happiness that I felt that night.

I'm glad that I had children at a young age. I made a lot of mistakes as a dad that I may not have made if I had been older, but as my son's get older I feel more forgiveness and understanding from them. I'm enjoying watching them grow into adults.

Christopher has a genuine heart and is a dreamer. He doesn't have a lot of patience but it comes from his want for perfection in an imperfect world. He has an intense, passionate and very interesting personality. His life is a journey to find something to direct that intensity and... more »

I was fortunate to guide two great guys and excellent photographers in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. Dave and Dennis came up from southern California to photograph the gorge. I'm sure that they are satisfied with the photos that they got. The conditions were perfect.

Darkness in Recession.

3:30AM is a fantastic time to wake up to grab the camera and head out to find the right spot to sit and anticipate a colorful sunrise. The only problem is that the larger percentage of time traveling to and hoping for the right sunrise at the right location proves to be fruitless... but then there are those times when it makes it all worth it. Yesterday morning was one such early wake up call.

As much as I try I rarely am able to just make a nice warm cup of sleepy time tea, relax in a warm bath, slip into my Spiderman footy jammies and go to bed early so I can wake up nice and refreshed. My best hope is for a good nap beforehand, a strong cup of coffee and a comfy nap on the couch with Sadie and Betty after I return.

When you're on the road at that time of the night it's usually you and the truckers. The road is yours for the most part. You... more »

I've been asked about shooting into the sunshine. As a rough rule of thumb be aware of the "Sunny f/16 rule". These days of digital photography will allow you to examine the results via your histogram which will also allow you a quick adjustment and another shot of the scene.

The light meter in your camera is used to meter indirect or reflected light. it goes crazy when shooting directly into the sun. Like I said, this is a starting point.

Now when the sun is setting on the horizon and is shining directly at you, you will have a good place to start. Also, at ~f/16+ your lens should produce some cool sun stars. :)

I love Oregon. I love the night. I love photography... and here's the confluence of the three. :)

This is a random farm and stock pond along the side of the road near Smith Rock at Terrebonne, Oregon just north of Bend. This photo was made at 2:43Am. I wonder if the people that were asleep in the comfort of they're home was aware of just how beautiful their farm is in the middle of the night, but because it's a farm, I'm that they've seen this scene before during morning chores. A rocky river revisited... and revisited and revisited.

My back yard at sunset. Well, not exactly my yard but the Sandy river is a short stroll from my home. It's a nice safe place to be when the floods come.

As most of my friends know I take a lot of photos from this area. If I'm unable to leave home for an epic location during a sunset I just take the dogs to the river and salvage the day. :)

Remind me to tell you the story about the time that I almost got sucked into the ocean through a churning 15 foot diameter volcanic rock lined mix master. Please notice that there is no rock or dry foreground in this shot. Suffice it to say that I left right after the wave came up past my knees.

This is Thor's Well near Cape Perpetua and the little coastal town of Yachats, Oregon. If you have never been to Yachats I can almost guarantee that you won't know how to say Yachats. :)

O'Brien, Oregon. Population 500 counting the livestock. ;)

O'Brien is located on Highway 199 just north of the Oregon/California Border. It's one of my favorite places to get a cold pop and sit on a bench and talk to the locals. I have a good segway into a chat because I used to live down the road a piece back when I was in high school and still know a few locals... at least enough to drop a name or three.

As I was there this time I had a chat with an old feller that used to drive truck for the Rough and ready lumber mill located just up the road. "The only one that could drive seven axles". Rough and Ready lumber mill was my only career choice if I would have stayed in the valley after gradiation. Instead I signed up for Uncle Sam's Yacht Club... but I digress. Hawaii Aloha Au Ia 'Oe.

I have sweet memories of arriving at this location in the dark in anticipation of a sunrise. I set up my camera and took a few shots to get a comp and to get everything ready. I stood with my cup of Kona in my hand as I closed my eyes and listened to the sound of crashing waves as the Trade Winds blew through my hair and over my face with the warmth of a subtle breath. I opened my eyes and watched the color of the sunset appear ever so slightly on the horizon. In time it built into an explosion of color and light and then faded away into the blue sky of another beautiful day in Kalapana Hawaii.

PPV-FTW

This was last night's sunset from Pucker Huddle Warshington looking down the Columbia River Gorge toward beautiful Oregon. :D

That's right. You heard me right. I said Pucker Huddle. :D

I used to live in White Salmon back when I was a young man and used to take girls up here to this view in my '71 Ranchero to drink soda pop, listen to the gospel radio show while watching sunsets, the stars and the lights of Hood River... before I rushed them back home early so they could go to church the next day. I was such a pure and wholesome young man. :D

I seriously did some praying, but I think I was praying for some puckering and huddling. :D

Working late last night put me up way past midnight. I walked out onto my front porch around 3am and looked up at a glittering sky filled with the light of the stars as they passed through the boughs of the trees.

Should I or shouldn't I? I knew that I had an appointment this morning to shoot some lodges up on Mount Hood but it wasn't until 10am. I went back inside. I was already in my fuzzy pants after all.

A few minutes later, after pulling on some jeans and a hoody, as Betty and I were walking out of the house I knew that I wouldn't regret the walk to the river even if it was cold and dark... and scary. ;)

When we reached the river we worked our way down to some pools away from the rapid rush and uneven surface of the main flow of the river that looked like they would give a nice reflection, found a dry rock and had a seat.

Here's a photo of my friend Darren White at Cape Kiwanda on a stormy day demonstrating the photographers creed... "Save the camera at no cost!". :)

Nobody was hurt this day, but we drove home cold and wet and my camera quit working after an altercation with a stray wave at Ocean City later that day.

Happy Waterfall Wednesday.

Abiqua Falls, Scotts Mills, Oregon.

Here's a photo that I almost died getting. Sliding down a steep trail that was more like a log chute in the rain and then wading up a creek to this falls wasn't enough for me. I had to go over at the base of this basalt rock wall to get this side shot of the waterfall.

As I stood there a few pebbles came down the wall and rattled across the rocky ground in front of me when all of a sudden kerpow! A rock about the size of my camera hit the ground about three feet from me.

I quickly folded up my tripod and made a hasty retreat back to safer ground.
