#onthisday , 965 years ago, Omar Khayyám was born in the Silk Road metropolis Nishapur in North Eastern Iran.
"Each Morn a thousand Roses brings, you say;
Yes, but where leaves the Rose of Yesterday?" (Omar Khayyám)
It is probably easier to list what skills Omar Khayyám did not master than reeling off his numerous achievements - philosopher, mathematician, astronomer and, last not least, poet.
Building an observatory and calculating a calendar that is still in use in Iran and Afghanistan because it is more accurate than the 400 years younger Georgian version as well as excelling in algebra and geometry, paving the way for the axioms of non-Euclidean and teaching philosophy, handling perceptions critical of Islam sober and undogmatic, he is today probably best remembred as poet and author of the Rubáiyát (Quatrains), roughly at thousand two-line stanz... more »

Biosemiotics, part 1: Toward an Epigenetic View of Our Musical Mind

We are transient beings, in a world of constantly changing culture. At home in the fields of Art and Science, seemingly capable of magnificent abstractions, humans have an intense need to externalize their insights. Music is an art and a highly transmissible cultural product, but we still have an incomplete understanding of how our musical experience shapes and is vividly retained within our brain, and how it affects our behavior. However, the developing field of social epigenetics is now helping us to describe how communication and emotion, prime hallmarks of music, can... more »

Social Curation: Dumpster Diving
"Curation amplifies storytelling. We cannot all dumpster dive, we need people to pull out , sort and align the nuggets."
-- +Jeffrey J Davis
Something is always gained in the translation
"Something really interesting happens in the curation process, because stories don’t have intrinsic value. An unshared story is basically like rubbish, lying around without any value. Stories gain their meaning and value by sharing, but it’s not as simple as that. The curator imparts her own value, status and trust, upon the story.
Curators represent a new type of tribal leadership that operates bottom-up and peer to peer. As a member of a tribe, curators will always be more native and relevant than any outsiders will ever be. Within a tribe they are not only appreciated for leveraging their insider skills, but for susta... more »

Zen of Small Tasks: Sunflower Seeds
Each seed individually sculpted
Sunflower Seeds is made up of millions of small works, each apparently identical, but actually unique. However realistic they may seem, these life-sized sunflower seed husks are in fact intricately hand-crafted in porcelain.
Each seed has been individually sculpted and painted by specialists working in small-scale workshops in the Chinese city of Jingdezhen. Far from being industrially produced, they are the effort of hundreds of skilled hands. Poured into the interior of the Turbine Hall’s vast industrial space, the 100 million seeds form a seemingly infinite landscape.
Porcelain is almost synonymous with China and, to make this work, Ai Weiwei has manipulated traditional methods of crafting what has historically been one of China’s most prized exports. Sunflower Seeds invites us to look more close... more »

Zen of Small Tasks: Oxyrhynchus Papyri
"Our future society is crowdeverything."
-- +John Kellden
Citizen Science
"Schoolchildren, pensioners and office workers are helping scholars at Oxford University to transcribe 2,000-year-old documents. In the 1890s archaeologists dug up a huge haul of papyri written in ancient Greek in Oxyrhynchus, Egypt. But until last year, scholars had managed to translate just 1% of them. Now the Ancient Lives project has enlisted thousands of internet users, who have already helped to transcribe more texts than diligent scholars had managed in the previous 100 years. Everything from shopping lists to a new gospel has been revealed in this extraordinary example of 'citizen science'"

Solaris
"For Tarkovsky, film – like all real art – is a form of contemplation on the meanings of our lives, on our sufferings, on what we may make out of ourselves.
Solaris is set in the future, and is about Kevin, a psychologist in Russia whose wife committed suicide ten years ago. Kevin, who lives a lonely, secluded life, is called upon by his scientific colleagues to visit a space station that hovers over a planet called Solaris. A psychologist is needed because astronauts who have been visiting the station have had strange, eerie experiences. Still mourning the loss of his wife, Kevin takes up the mission and upon reaching the space station, finds that the only two inhabitants of the large station, both scientists, are behaving mysteriously.
