Nice Hat
The Northern Royal Flycatcher (Onychorhynchus coronatus mexicanus) is found in Mexico, South and Central America. Although it has dull plumage, the bird has a spectacular brightly colored crest on their heads which it unfurls only rarely.

Roses are Red, Blood Cells Blue
❤ The heart is a symbol of love, and on this Mother's Day, let's consider the cardiovascular changes in a pregnant mother. As the sole provider of nourishment to the baby, the mother's cardiac output (blood volume) increases by 50% during pregnancy...that's an extra liter and half. Her heart will enlarge and beat faster, by about 15 beats/min. The growing fetus pushes her heart upwards and to the left. She will need more red blood cells to carry extra oxygen, although the increased numbers do not keep up with the blood volume. The higher requirement for iron and the dilution of red cells in blood can make mama-to-be tired and anemic.
❤ A pregnant woman is hypercoagulable: more likely to form clots. This is thought to be an evolutionary precaution against hemorrhaging after delivery, but it puts the mother at ... more »

Baby Hedgehog Waves Hello!
Your dose of daily squee. This baby hedgehog can look forward to a lifespan of 4-7 years. Unfortunately, in some areas of the world where hedgehogs were introduced, like New Zealand, they have become major pests destroying native species of insects, lizards and ground nesting birds. But yes, they are cute :)

"Bee-eaters Meropidae rafinesque. Most species are found in Africa and Asia but others occur in southern Europe, Australia, and New Guinea. They are characterised by richly coloured plumage, slender bodies, and usually elongated central tail feathers. All have long downturned bills and pointed wings, which give them a swallow-like appearance when seen from afar. There are 26 different species of bee-eaters.
As the name suggests, bee-eaters predominantly eat flying insects, especially bees and wasps. While they pursue any type of flying insect, honey bees predominate in their diet. Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps) comprise from 20% to 96% of all insects eaten, with honey bees comprising approximately one-third of the Hymenoptera.
Before eating its meal, a bee-eater removes the stinger by repeatedly hitting and rubbing the insect on a hard surface. During this process, pressure is... more »

Glass Beach
Nature can change junk to jewels. In the early 20th century, residents of a remote coastal town of Fort Bragg in California dumped their trash over the cliffs onto the beach (don't worry, this was banned in 1967). In the decades since, the sea tumbled and polished the bits of glass and junk into smooth, shiny pebbles that glint like jewels in the sunshine.

H7N9: A virus worth watching
Thanks to the two Virology Hangouts on Air that +Scott Lewis and I hosted ("Going Viral" - SciSunHOA from 28 April, 2013 and http://goo.gl/1WO5Q), I have viruses on my mind (in a good way!). So it was with interest that I read about the recent outbreaks of H7N9 in China. If you want a nice primer on why influenza strains have these letters to their name, read +Deeksha Tare's post here (which explains the significance of Hemagglutinin and Neuraminidase: http://goo.gl/CnQLX).
• H7N9 is an animal influenza A virus that has crossed the species barrier to infect humans. The first human infection was reported in China two months ago, and the latest WHO report confirms a total of 108 cases and 22 deaths thus far. The virus has now spread beyond mainland China as a case has been reported in Taiwan.
