Trey Ratcliff8,450,051Join Me in London for a fun and free photowalk! See http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2015/01/31/london-photowalk-feb-14-3-pm/ for more! Many Grand Prizes, including the DJI Inspire 1 Quadcopter!  http://www.dji.com/product/inspire-1 The last one we did 5 years ago in 2010 was Absolutely Amazing, and I want to do it again with y'all! I am SO Excited for this event.  It will be quite strange to come back from the remote bits of sensory-deprived Antarctica to the opposite-world of sensory-overload London! If you've never been to a photowalk before, no worries. Come, bring a friend or your family, get a camera in everyone's hands, and yes, mobile phones and things like this are perfectly fine! :)  We'll combine this one with a really fun photo contest, and there are more details on that below. The Deets: - Facebook Event Page: http://goo.gl/xOSgZk  – Hashtag: #TRLondon2015 – Time Start: Saturday, February 14, 3 PM – Time End: Probably around 6 PM at a pub where we can all buy drinks, hang out, etc. We can keep on taking pictures in the bar! haha :) – Location Start: South Bank right outside the National Theatre (Google Map – http://goo.gl/DYx7iu and How to get to the National Theatre: http://goo.gl/v1hl5k ) – Location End: Slug and Lettuce Bar -  http://goo.gl/djxIMK – Route: http://goo.gl/SwJMRm – Plan: I’ll say hello to everyone and give everyone some artistic and technical goals for the day. I’ll talk through my camera setup and discuss the whole plan for the evening. Then we’ll all walk around like a huge centipede to find our photographic muses for the day! I’ll stop 5 or so times and we’ll all congeal into a slime-mold at which point I’ll set up for a formal shot and talk about my settings, framings, what I’m trying to communicate with the shot, etc. You are ALWAYS welcome to ask me questions any time… Please don’t hesitate! :) – Grand Prize: 5 Unlimited Shopping Sprees in the new Stuck In Customs store at http://store.stuckincustoms.com  – Everything in there that is downloadable can be yours! :) (About $3,000 in prizes) – How to Win: Take an interesting photo of a fellow PhotoWalker (or several PhotoWalkers) and then post it to Any Social Media with the #TRLondon2015 hashtag. Be creative and try new things! Get close, get far, get low, get high (hehe), get interesting subject matter in the background, etc. Have fun with it — you can take and post and share as many photos as you like! Of course, all the time we’ll be taking photos of other things too, the amazing buildings, landscapes, bridges, and the like, but only the photos of fellow PhotoWalkers will be for the prize. I know photographers often really enjoy taking “Street Photos” of other people but sometimes can be a bit shy or afraid to ask. Well not here, you all have permission…it’s open season! :) – How I choose the 5 winners: I’ll scan all social media about a week after the event for that #TRLondon2015 tag and choose 5 of the photos that I think are the most interestinTrey Ratcliff London PhotoWalk 2015! This kind of online interview is something of an experiment, and we're still figuring out how to make it work best. Reinventors Network830,873Tim O'Reilly has some big ideas about how to dramatically modernize government regulation, from "algorithmic regulation" that harnesses computer power much like top tech companies in Silicon Valley to peer-to-peer self-regulation, where citizens increasingly take over from government bureaucrats, like relying more on Yelp-like reviews to keep an eye on restaurants. For more on the frame of the conversation in this virtual roundtable as well as who will be participating, check out the dedicated page linked below.  Reinventors is a series of virtual roundtables done over the new medium of group video about how to fundamentally reinvent many of our 20th-century systems to work in the new realities of our 21st-century world. Each week we take on a new topic in our inaugural project to Reinvent America. Check out www.reinventors.net to learn more.Reinvent Regulation with Tim O'Reilly2013-04-23 20:00:00132

Everything in Its Right Place

It’s been a little more than a quarter since I took on leadership of a newly formed team, which we’ve christened SPS: Streams, Photos, and Sharing.

In that short time, I’ve had some time to reflect on the products we’ve built over the last few years, and also the opportunity to oversee the launch of our new Google Photos product. I’ve concluded that it’s time for a “pivot”... or more precisely time to talk more openly about a pivot that’s been underway for some time (and in fact is reflected in the name of the new team). We're going to continue focusing Google+ on helping users connect around the interest they love, and retire it as the mechanism by which people share and engage within other Google products.

Big launch for the team today!  We've hugely improved Google Contacts.  The once tedious task of "managing" your contacts on Google has been made a lot easier, more intelligent... and more beautiful...  The launch is still a 'preview', so go to contacts.google.com/preview, check it out, and let them know what you think!

As usual... Thoughtful commentary and meta-commentary by +Mike Elgan...

Sorry, tech press. Google+ is alive and well.

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/Z6sQ6w )

A chorus of tech journalists this week is saying that Google is phasing out its social network, Google+.

Where did they get this juicy nugget of information? Well, they made it up. And I'll tell you why.

But first, let's look at what the press is saying and compare that with reality:

Four years ago when we conceived of the “Google+ Project”, we made it clear that our goals were always two-fold: Google+ aspired to be both a “platform layer that unified Google’s sharing models”, and a product / stream / app in its own right.

This was a well-intentioned goal, but as realized it led to some product experiences that users sometimes found confusing. For instance, and perhaps most controversially, integration with YouTube implied that leaving a comment on YouTube (something users had obviously been doing successfully for years) suddenly and unexpectedly required “joining Google+.”

We decided it’s time to fix this, not only in YouTube, but across a user’s entire experience at Google. We want to formally retire the notion that a Google+ membership is required for anything at Google… other than using Google+ itself.

Some of the consequences of this shift in thinking have already been deployed. Others we’re rolling out as fast as possible (e.g. the changes to YouTube we referenced today). And many more will roll out over the rest of the year.

What does this mean for Google+ the product? Relieved of the notion of integrating with every other product at Google, Google+ can now focus on doing what it’s already doing quite well: helping millions of users around the world connect around the interest they love. Aspects of the product that don’t serve this agenda have been, or will be, retired. But you’ll also see a slew of improvements that make this use case shine (like the recent launch of Collections - https://plus.google.com/collections/featured).

It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how this strategy has played out as realized in the recent Google Photos launch, a product which in many ways embodies and telegraphs the changes discussed above. Google Photos not only doesn’t require a Google+ account, but as much of the functionality as possible doesn’t even require an account at all. It was important to me that when we launched Google Photos, we stressed the product implements sharing by any means a user prefers… without compromise or agenda. This is the right thing for users and the feedback and usage has been extremely validating.

I’m excited to share this strategy with the world, excited about what it means for Google+, and most of all for all of Google’s users.___

More context on the right-placing of Photos...

I wanted to clarify a couple of points regarding yesterday’s announcement (https://goo.gl/TL0l6j) and provide some additional context:

1. The great photo and video sharing service that’s part of Google+ is unaffected. You can continue to post photos and videos, and your followers will be able to comment and +1 as before. No change.

2. All of the photos, videos, and albums you have already shared on Google+, including their posts, comments, and +1s are also unaffected. An easy way to find these is to visit the Photos tab of your Profile page.

3. The private photo management component of Google+, which includes backup, editing, creations, private album management (album management for shared content is still available on Google+), and sharing to other apps, is being replaced by Google Photos.

I sincerely appreciate for many of you #3 is still a hard pill to swallow. And I promise we don’t take decisions like this one lightly. The reality is that maintaining both Google+ Photos (the private photo management component of Google+) and Google Photos poses several challenges. Most notably, it is confusing to users why we have two offerings that virtually do the same thing, and it means our team needs to divide its focus rather than working on building a single, great user experience.

We are working very hard to bring all the best features of Google+ Photos to Google Photos, and this focus will allow us to deliver even more features at a much faster pace.___More context on the right-placing of Photos...

I continue to be extremely excited about the building momentum for +Google Photos.  If you're not using it yet, you should be!  Time to make the move...

Goodbye Google+ Photos, hello +Google Photos!

In May, we launched Google Photos as the home for all your photos and videos. With Google Photos you can store unlimited high quality photos and videos for free, find photos fast, and see them organized by what matters to you. Plus, you can bring moments to life and share anywhere with anyone.

In an effort to ensure everyone has the best photos experience we can deliver, on August 1st we’ll start to shut down Google+ Photos -- initially on Android, and soon thereafter on the Web and iOS.

If you’re still using Google+ Photos, now is a great time to make the switch. You may have seen a prompt in Google+ Photos on Android with a link to download the new Google Photos. Don’t worry, all your photos and videos will still be saved and available after you switch to the new, stand-alone Google Photos app. With the new app you’ll still be able to backup, edit, and share your photos and videos, with unlimited storage, automatic organization, and more.

Download the new Google Photos today for uninterrupted access to all your photos, videos and albums.  If you don’t update to the new Google Photos, Google+ Photos on Android will soon stop working, but your photos and videos will still remain safely stored and available via http://photos.google.com or for export using Google Takeout.

With +Tim O'Reilly and +Steven Levy collaborating...  This is sure to be an awesome event.

We just unveiled the project I've been working on for the past six months or so (really, the past couple of years, but only explicitly the past six months), a new event called Next:Economy, also known as WTF? What's the Future of Work?  It's a look at robots, AI, and the on-demand economy, and what they tell us about the future of work, the shape of corporations, and the issues we should be grappling with now if we want these profound changes to come out for the best.

My co-host for the event is Steven Levy of Medium. While the speaker list is still preliminary, it tells the story of what we're going after. Explore the speaker pages - I've loaded them with quotes from the speakers, which will help you understand in advance where they are coming from. Over the next few weeks and months, we'll be curating an online conversation, with lots of great reading and viewing, to engage with these ideas, whether or not you are coming to the event.___With +Tim O'Reilly and +Steven Levy collaborating...  This is sure to be an awesome event.

Just celebrated my birthday on Friday (thanks for all the happy wishes) and got the coolest present. +Irene Au commissioned Susan Kare to do "icon renderings" of our family.  Here are the ones for me and Irene.

Susan was the "designer of many typefaces, icons, and original marketing material for the original Macintosh."

It's amazing what she can accomplish in such a constrained design space.

Introducing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic

Our happiest Google+ users are those who connect with others around shared interests and passions. So we set out to give people a place to express the things they love. Today, we’re announcing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic.

Every collection is a focused set of posts on a particular topic, providing an easy way for you to organize all the things you’re into. Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections.

Posts in collections you follow will appear in your Home stream, with a link to easily jump right into the collection so you can get to similar content from that author. Collections give you a great way to find more of the stuff you love from the people you follow.

Collections is available on Android and the web, and iOS is coming later. For Android users, make sure to update your Google+ app to get access to Collections.

For inspiration on interesting topics, check out our Featured Collections page here: g.co/collections

When thinking about the best instructors I've ever had... Gilbert Strang immediately jumps out.

I took his courses in Applied Math for Engineers and Scientists at MIT (18.085 and 18.086) more than 25 years ago... (and thanks to Stan, Irfan and Ali who helped me struggle through!)

I was delighted to find out this morning that at 80 years old, he's still teaching.  And his lectures are online... Check out 18.06, Linear Algebra.

His own passion for the subject and genuine enthusiasm made every lecture seem like a well-edited, carefully crafted PBS Nova episode on each subject.  While I am (sadly) not a gifted mathematician, Strang's lectures helped me deeply deeply get the math, as opposed to just turning a crank and executing an algorithm...

I belong to a very small club of reporters who had a close relationship -- sometimes contentious but I believe ultimately one of respect on both sides -- with Steve Jobs.. Brent Schlender was one of those (you could count us on one hand) and maybe knew Jobs the best. Now he has co-written a book on Jobs, and it benefited mightily from the cooperation of Apple and Jobs's widow--because those who knew Steve best were outraged at the Isaacson biography and wanted, in their view, to set the record straight. Here's my take on the new book and the controversy.

Triplets?  Separated at birth?

Three brilliant and super-talented friends: +Sebastian Thrun, +Loic Le Meur and +Tony Fadell.

Between them, they've made a few things like the iPod, LeWeb, self-driving cars, Google Glass, Udacity, Seesmic, Nest, etc.

Loic mentioned to Tony that people kept congratulating him on the awesome TED Talk yesterday (it was Tony who gave the awesome talk.)  Tony then made a comment that people often mix him up with Sebastian...  Next thing we know, all three of them sit down on the same bench!

I am going to miss +Patrick Pichette terribly...  But very hard to argue with carpe diem!   The man is an inspiration.

After nearly 7 years as CFO, I will be retiring from Google to spend more time with my family.  Yeah, I know you've heard that line before.  We give a lot to our jobs.  I certainly did.  And while I am not looking for sympathy, I want to share my thought process because so many people struggle to strike the right balance between work and personal life.

This story starts last fall. A very early morning last September, after a whole night of climbing, looking at the sunrise on top of Africa - Mt Kilimanjaro. Tamar (my wife) and I were not only enjoying the summit, but on such a clear day, we could see in the distance, the vast plain of the Serengeti at our feet, and with it the calling of all the potential adventures Africa has to offer. (see exhibit #1 - Tamar and I on Kili).

And Tamar out of the blue said "Hey, why don't we just keep on going". Let's explore Africa, and then turn east to make our way to India, it's just next door, and we're here already. Then, we keep going; the Himalayas, Everest, go to Bali, the Great Barrier Reef... Antarctica, let's go see Antarctica!?" Little did she know, she was tempting fate.

I remember telling Tamar a typical prudent CFO type response- I would love to keep going, but we have to go back. It's not time yet, There is still so much to do at Google, with my career, so many people counting on me/us - Boards, Non Profits, etc

But then she asked the killer question: So when is it going to be time? Our time? My time? The questions just hung there in the cold morning African air.

A few weeks later, I was happy back at work, but could not shake away THE question: When is it time for us to just keep going? And so began a reflection on my/our life. Through numerous hours of cycling last fall (my introvert happy place) I concluded on a few simple and self-evident truths:

First, The kids are gone.  Two are in college, one graduated and in a start-up in Africa. Beautiful young adults we are very proud of. Tamar honestly deserves most of the credit here. She has done a marvelous job. Simply marvelous. But the reality is that for Tamar and I, there will be no more Cheerios encrusted minivan, night watch because of ear infections, ice hockey rinks at 6:00am. Nobody is waiting for us/needing us.

Second, I am completing this summer 25-30 years of nearly non-stop work (depending on how you wish to cut the data). And being member of FWIO, the noble Fraternity of Worldwide Insecure Over-achievers, it has been a whirlwind of truly amazing experiences. But as I count it now, it has also been a frenetic pace for about 1500 weeks now. Always on - even when I was not supposed to be. Especially when I was not supposed to be. And am guilty as charged - I love my job (still do), my colleagues, my friends, the opportunities to lead and change the world.

Third, this summer, Tamar and I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary. When our kids are asked by their friends about the success of the longevity of our marriage, they simply joke that Tamar and I have spent so little time together that "it's really too early to tell" if our marriage will in fact succeed.
If they could only know how many great memories we already have together. How many will you say? How long do you have? But one thing is for sure, I want more. And she deserves more. Lots more.

Allow me to spare you the rest of the truths. But the short answer is simply that I could not find a good argument to tell Tamar we should wait any longer for us to grab our backpacks and hit the road - celebrate our last 25 years together by turning the page and enjoy a perfectly fine mid life crisis full of bliss and beauty, and leave the door open to serendipity for our next leadership opportunities, once our long list of travels and adventures is exhausted.

Working at Google is a privilege, nothing less. I have worked with the best of the best, and know that I am leaving Google in great hands. I have made so many friends at Google it's not funny. Larry, Sergey, Eric, thank you for friendship. I am forever grateful for letting me be me, for your trust, your warmth, your support, and for so much laughter through good and not so good times.

To be clear, I am still here. I wish to transition over the coming months but only after we have found a new Googley CFO and help him/her through an orderly transition, which will take some time.

In the end, life is wonderful, but nonetheless a series of trade offs, especially between business/professional endeavours and family/community. And thankfully, I feel I’m at a point in my life where I no longer have to have to make such tough choices anymore. And for that I am truly grateful. Carpe Diem.
