Big news today Google+! We’re rolling a brand new Discover stream to help you and new users find the absolutely best content our network has to offer. If you glance over at your left-hand navigation bar, you’ll notice a shiny ‘Discover’ tab waiting to be explored. Inside, you’ll find trending posts from curated sources in a new, denser format. Reshare to Google+ in fewer clicks

As of today, when you hit the share icon on a Google+ post, you'll automatically be taken to a Google+ reshare of the post. Previously, users were given an option between Google+ and other social options. This was done in an effort to reduce the number of clicks it took you to reshare Google+ content on Google+. While there is no longer direct share capability to other social sites, copy/paste from the address bar in your browser still works just fine.

We hope this will make your experience here a little bit more seamless and thanks for the feedback that got us here!

Goodbye, Deck

When I bought my house, everyone told me, "Oh! You're going to have make so many repairs and it's going to be so costly!" I told them that it was fine and the only issue with my house, according to the disclosure packet was dry rot on the deck - "and every deck has dry rot!"

Well... some decks have more dry rot than others.

This is after one day of demolition and I'm so sad. Goodbye, deck! But at the same time, your replacement is gonna be so much better :D

We hope that this creates a better experience for new users that more readily communicates the awesome stuff G+ has to offer while providing existing users with a fun way to find and follow creators they haven’t yet, ahem, discovered.

To make way for Discover, you may have noticed we removed the Collections tab and the Events tab. Don’t worry! Collections and Events aren’t gone; they’ve just been moved. ‘Featured Collections’ have a new home within Discover and ‘Your / Followed Collections’ can be found by clicking on ‘Communities and Collections’ on your profile. Events can now be found in the overflow menu (three dots) on your profile when you can also find your Insights.

These changes will be live on web and iOS within the next day or so for all users. As always, please let us know what you think by replying to this thread or using the ‘Send Feedback’ option on web or in-app. Enjoy!___

G+ Search just got better

We heard you guys and are happy to announce some much requested improvements are live for G+ search! Check out Anna's post below for details.

New Search Features & Feel

Today, we’re rolling out a bevy of improvements to G+ Search — most visibly, you’ll find that typing into the search bar no longer interrupts your search attempts by taking you to Explore. That means that your results get to you that much faster!

That’s not all…
• A new, tabbed interface will make it easier for you to find the exact type of content that you’re looking for.
• In the posts tab, you can filter based on the post author. Finally, you can look back at your many years of G+ posting without being distracted by everyone else’s Neko Atsume updates!
• Popular Topics are now displayed in the search bar dropdown.

As always, let us know what you think and we hope you enjoy!

The Real Cost of Not Allowing Trans Servicemen

So I did a bunch of research last night about the actual effects of allowing trans people to serve, specifically around people's concerns of cost and readiness - especially when it comes to reassignment surgery. The study "Assessing the Implications of Allowing Transgender Personnel to Serve Openly" was commissioned by the DoD and conducted by the Rand corporation.

In short, covering medical costs of trans people in the military has a marginal impact on the DoDs healthcare costs (<0.1%) and a very small number (<100) of the ~10,000 trans servicemen opt to have surgery while in there service. The vast majority are either on hormones only or have already had reassignment or don't want it.

It's important to remember that, looking at Trump's tweet without any official white house guidelines, it's clear to me that he intends to ban all trans people, not just those going through reassignment.

So why does the military provide healthcare to its servicemen at all? Well, perks like healthcare are a retention mechanic and denying trans people the right to participate when the healthcare costs are so low is... absurd to me, especially given the other areas where the DoD spends money - like on fucking Viagra which, no, doesn't impact readiness but is significantly more expensive than trans medical costs by a magnitude of 5x. Accepting Viagra, but not trans medical needs, exemplifies that the issue is not with cost, but instead with trans-identity.

All in all, I see no evidence that 1) trans servicemen have dramatic impacts on readiness, 2) that their healthcare costs have a significant impact on healthcare costs, or 3) that the government couldn't easily recoup the costs of allowing these people to serve. The real costs lies not in the healthcare costs for these people, but in losing ~10k eager and ready to serve members of the armed forces.

The threat to our military is not gender reassignment, but losing ~10k servicemen. That's what Trump's tweet implies and now is not the time to be like, "Oh well he brought this up so like let's try to reason with him to allow currently serving people to stay, but not anyone who wants reassignment." There was no reason, financially or out of preparedness, to begin discussing this issue at all. If you're worried about readiness, your concern should not be in the couple of people who can't serve because they're having a surgery, but instead in losing the people serving now and the people who will never be able to serve.___

Previously, users were given an option between Google+ and other social options. This was done in an effort to reduce the number of clicks it took you to reshare Google+ content on Google+. While there is no longer direct share capability to other social sites, copy/paste from the address bar in your browser still works just fine.

We hope this will make your experience here a little bit more seamless and thanks for the feedback that got us here!___

And then I looked at my plans and realized that my friends and I were supposed to go out the week after at a place very similar to Pulse.

It was the first time I questioned, "Am I safe to go out?"

Support anyone who comes out this month emphatically and loudly. Speak up whenever you hear discriminatory language. Take a second to ask a question about something you don't fully understand. Write a public message of support without knowing who it's going to resonate with. Consider lthe untinended (or explicit) consequences of your political leanings.

Perhaps most fundamentally, think beyond yourself.

To those of you who are already gay as fuck, a little gay, questioning, or questioning starting a difficult conversation, I love you - and those closer to you love you even more deeply. Happy Pride :)

I tore out the old chandelier (which was two really ugly pendants) and dug through my ceiling only to realize that the second half of my new chandelier hadn't arrived yet. So this is what I was stuck with for a few days.

The good news? I didn't start a fire and I didn't electrocute myself! Thanks YouTube!

The delicate art of community management and transparency

A successful community management team is one that's both empowered to be and capable of being the middle-person between product and consumer. The job of a community manager is two fold. On one hand, we want to identify and advocate for the needs of our consumers. On the other, we want to be help the company we work for advocate for its longterm goals.

Sometimes, users (everywhere, not just here specifically) get frustrated when they feel their highest priority need isn't being fulfilled and that's where it takes some creative collaboration between product and community teams.

Let's use an example. 'Leanne' is frustrated because 'Feature X' is very important to her, but she sees that the team just announced 'Feature A'. She's (understandably) frustrated and feels... more »

She's (understandably) frustrated and feels like there isn't enough transparency about her own, hotly requested feature. Why does this happen? Usually for one of several reasons:

- The request is being developed, but isn't in a state for a timeline to be given. We don't like to give updates like, "This is being worked on, but no timeline for you," because it's generally more frustrating than encouraging. Many, many things are being worked on, but sometimes it takes longer than users (and sometimes engineers) would like. The only thing worse than transparency can be broken promises.

- That thing you want is part of a bigger story. Occasionally, stuff is ready - but we're holding it so we can launch it with other things and tell a good story. Sometimes marketing is involved, sometimes it's product, but we bundle things together often - including backend changes the user may never notice.

- We replied, but not everyone knows and we don't see everything. Not everything is worthy of an announcement, so the community team spends a lot of time engaging one-on-one with users - but we can't get to all of them. Sometimes people are frustrated about something that's been fixed or something that we've already given an answer to. We can always do better letting announcements reach larger audience, but we know we'll never be 100% perfect. Keep pinging us ;)

- It's confidential. Sometimes we're silent because we have to be for business reasons. Sorry about this one.

One thing we know though is that transparency won't always make you popular. Believe it or not, it's usually really hard for community managers to say, "This isn't on our roadmap," or "We won't do that." That kind of transparency is difficult for everyone, but we feel it's important. Just know that, when you get an answer like that, it comes from a considered place and, if we're unsure about how to prioritize something, we'll always ask for more information.

Hopefully this helps shed some light on the way the Content and Community Management Team views transparency. Let me know if you have any questions below. In the effort of transparency, I'll try to answer ya ;)___

Day 31

Whew. Several BBQ's, movie nights, and nights of furniture making later, I finally had some time to do some arts and crafts! Truth be told, I have no idea what these concrete blocks are, but I found them on the side of the road about 3 years ago. Always knew I wanted to do something with them, but wasn't sure exactly what. Turns out they make for a great dining room table centerpiece. Each of them have two wires coming out that are perfect for holding air plants.

Knowing I couldn't put concrete slabs on a zinc, I wandered around Home Depot looking for something to put them on. The perfect solution was actually fence post tops that I used wood stain on.

Looking out from the table to the ocean, the plants remind me of beach grass. And now I can say I made something without looking at Pinterest! :D

Even though the campus grounds are still under construction the buildings are beautiful, light filled spaces. There are lots of nooks and crannies for working and collaborating. We were greeted by Carter Gibson, Program Manager and Community Management (Google+) and Faith Tan a Community Manager for Google+. In short, these are the people who guide the good ship G+. After a few slices of pizza and drinks Carter gave a short presentation on G+. This was brief glimpse into the mission and the future of the platform. I was amazed to see how much our toy photography community is spotlighted in their presentation. In the world of G+, we’re rock stars. 🙂

While the content of G+ is controlled by an algorithm, just like any of the other social media platforms, there are people behind the veil, pulling the strings. They’re continuously looking at what the algorithm is selecting, tweaking the results and occasionally hand selecting content. The excitement this group of people have for their product was inspiring. They only want to grow G+, an interest based social platform, into a vibrant community of creatives. Yes, their well aware of the uglier sides of G+; spam, porn and comments that are simply gibberish. I was happy to here that they are working hard to solve (or at least mitigate) these problems.

After the presentation we gave out our swag bags (LEGO, name badges and a custom figure created by Dennis), grabbed a G+ mini figure from our new G+ friends and then passed out even more LEGO. We then moved to another building with a three story glass and wood atrium to photograph our toys and hang out with our hosts. It was a great opportunity to chat with my fellow photographers and ask a few more questions of Carter and his crew. Soon it was time for a quick group photo, then it was back to the other building to grab our stuff and head out."

Improved Photo Browsing

Hi friendly iOS users,

We’re proud to announce an improved photo browsing experience. Now, when you tap on a photo, you get a richer experience where you can (1) zoom-in (2) scroll to see more photos and (3) pinch or tap the icon in the top right to see a mosaic view of the photos in the stream. One of my favorite uses of this is to browse Leo Deegan’s photo collections, check it out and bring on the feedback!___Browsing photos just got better on iOS

We just made inviting people to Communities easier.

Say hello to Community invite links!

Invite all the right people to your Communities all at once

Communities are a great way for groups of people to share around a topic. But when you’re creating a Community for a group you’re a part of, like a book club, parent-teacher association, or work team, the last thing you want to have to do is invite each member one-by-one.

Since so many groups already have a way to get ahold of one another, whether that’s through email, chat, a newsletter or something else, we’ve created a new Community invite link so you can invite all the right people at once.

Community owners and moderators can share an invite link with their group however they choose. People with the link will be able to directly join both private and ask-to-join public Communities, and anyone who doesn’t have a Google account or Google+ profile will be able to create one along the way. Communities that are restricted to a given G Suite organization will continue to only be accessible to members of that organization.

If something changes, you can easily disable a shared link or generate a new one at any time. To share an invite link to your Community, just open the invite menu on Google+ web, turn on the “Allow invites by link” option, and grab the link that appears.

Our service providers should be committed to treating all information equally and fairly. We enter exceptionally dangerous territory when access to certain information is given a fast lane at the sole discretion of corporations. There is no consumer benefit to dismantling Net Neutrality - especially as ISP profits increase.

Following the mergers of ISP and media companies over the past couple of years, it's no secret that the likes of Comcast, AT&T, and Time Warner are eager to prioritize their own content over their own wires once their agreement to uphold Net Neutrality expires. America is founded on the idea that all ideas can and should be equally represented and I'm sickened to see such an excited effort to allow ISP's to decide what information is most easily accessed. Instead of forcing the market itself (from startups to up-and-comers) to compete on a level playing field, the FCC is actively trying to created a tiered environment where mega-corporations can restrict competition by providing unfair advantages to their own interests.

I stand in full opposition to this proposal and harbor a special resentment to its deceptive name. The FCC should continue to support and uphold Net Neutrality and Title 2."___
