Thanks again, Toy Photographers!

It truly was such a blast hosting part of +Shelly Corbett's Toy Photography meet-up at Google. +Pamela Abi Najem worked so hard putting it together and we loved learning more about how this community comes together, collaborates, and does cool stuff.

Here's an excerpt from Shelly's blog (and I recommend reading the whole thing + attending in the future!):

"My G+ planning partner, Pamela Abj Najem, greeted us at Googles latest expansion campus and whisked us away to our meeting room. I will admit I was star struck. I mean I was at Google HQ!. Even though the campus grounds are still under construction the buildings are beautiful, light filled spaces. There are lots of nooks and crannies for working and collaborating. We were greeted by Carter Gibson, Program Manager and Community Management (Google+) and Faith Tan a Community Manager for Google+. In short, these are the people who guide the good ship G+. After a few slices of pizza and drinks Carter gave a short presentation on G+. This was brief glimpse into the mission and the future of the platform. I was amazed to see how much our toy photography community is spotlighted in their presentation. In the world of G+, we’re rock stars. 🙂

While the content of G+ is controlled by an algorithm, just like any of the other social media platforms, there are people behind the veil, pulling the strings. They’re continuously looking at what the algorithm is selecting, tweaking the results and occasionally hand selecting content. The excitement this group of people have for their product was inspiring. They only want to grow G+, an interest based social platform, into a vibrant community of creatives. Yes, their well aware of the uglier sides of G+; spam, porn and comments that are simply gibberish. I was happy to here that they are working hard to solve (or at least mitigate) these problems.

After the presentation we gave out our swag bags (LEGO, name badges and a custom figure created by Dennis), grabbed a G+ mini figure from our new G+ friends and then passed out even more LEGO. We then moved to another building with a three story glass and wood atrium to photograph our toys and hang out with our hosts. It was a great opportunity to chat with my fellow photographers and ask a few more questions of Carter and his crew. Soon it was time for a quick group photo, then it was back to the other building to grab our stuff and head out."

Browsing photos just got better on iOS

Per your requests.... enjoy :)

Improved Photo Browsing

Hi friendly iOS users,

We’re proud to announce an improved photo browsing experience. Now, when you tap on a photo, you get a richer experience where you can (1) zoom-in (2) scroll to see more photos and (3) pinch or tap the icon in the top right to see a mosaic view of the photos in the stream. One of my favorite uses of this is to browse Leo Deegan’s photo collections, check it out and bring on the feedback!___Browsing photos just got better on iOS

We just made inviting people to Communities easier.

Say hello to Community invite links!

Invite all the right people to your Communities all at once

Communities are a great way for groups of people to share around a topic. But when you’re creating a Community for a group you’re a part of, like a book club, parent-teacher association, or work team, the last thing you want to have to do is invite each member one-by-one.

Since so many groups already have a way to get ahold of one another, whether that’s through email, chat, a newsletter or something else, we’ve created a new Community invite link so you can invite all the right people at once.

Community owners and moderators can share an invite link with their group however they choose. People with the link will be able to directly join both private and ask-to-join public Communities, and anyone who doesn’t have a Google account or Google+ profile will be able to create one along the way. Communities that are restricted to a given G Suite organization will continue to only be accessible to members of that organization.

If something changes, you can easily disable a shared link or generate a new one at any time. To share an invite link to your Community, just open the invite menu on Google+ web, turn on the “Allow invites by link” option, and grab the link that appears.

Have you FCC'ed yourself today?

Help protect Net Neutrality by writing the FCC about how much you hate the 'Restoring Internet Freedom' initiative at http://www.gofccyourself.com

Too busy to write something yourself? CTRL C + CTRL V:

"This misleading bill only restores freedom to mega-corporations to further restrict Americans' access to information, art, and media. In our current reality, Americans often do not have a choice in their internet provider, thus making Title 2 all the more important. Our service providers should be committed to treating all information equally and fairly. We enter exceptionally dangerous territory when access to certain information is given a fast lane at the sole discretion of corporations. There is no consumer benefit to dismantling Net Neutrality - especially as ISP profits increase.

Following the mergers of ISP and media companies over the past couple of years, it's no secret that the likes of Comcast, AT&T, and Time Warner are eager to prioritize their own content over their own wires once their agreement to uphold Net Neutrality expires. America is founded on the idea that all ideas can and should be equally represented and I'm sickened to see such an excited effort to allow ISP's to decide what information is most easily accessed. Instead of forcing the market itself (from startups to up-and-comers) to compete on a level playing field, the FCC is actively trying to created a tiered environment where mega-corporations can restrict competition by providing unfair advantages to their own interests.

I stand in full opposition to this proposal and harbor a special resentment to its deceptive name. The FCC should continue to support and uphold Net Neutrality and Title 2."___

Coffee table success

It only took me, two friends, two huge Russian guys, straps, planks of wood, a dolly, and a bunch of oomph. Hope I never decide to move it 😬

If you're in the Bay Area, I highly recommend ordering something from StatusWood. They were exceptional.

RMC Mean Streak - The most talked about coaster... ever?

Cedar Point is no stranger to building some of the world's best rides. They've built strata coasters like Top Thrill Dragster, the dueling hybrid coaster Gemini, hyper coaster Magnum XL-200, and the wooden monstrosity Mean Streak. Except Mean Streak was a terrible ride. It was a huge, sure, but absurdly uncomfortable. To this day it's the only coaster that actually caused me pain while I rode it and I'm not alone.

So imagine my joy when I found out that they're tearing (most of) it down to RMC it.

I've talked about RMC quite a bit here for many reasons, not least of which being that they are the most innovative coaster company out there right now. They have a business of transforming older woodies into incredible hybrid coasters and are not doing it to Mean Streak. It will open in 2018... more »

It will open in 2018 (insert inside joke about the coaster community thinking it will open in 2017).

While we still don't know much about this ride, we do know that it has this incredible outward banked turn. This turn will throw you out of your seat away from the track at a near 90 degree angle. There are very few companies that would do this and I don't think it's any accident that it's one of the first elements that Cedar Point built as speculation rises. ___

Blue Fire Megacoaster - Mack Rides' most important ride

Before Blue Fire Megacoaster, the vast vaaaaast majority of big, looping rides were built by Intamin AG and B&M. And while that still may be true, Mack Rides became widely known after constructing Blue Fire Megacoaster. It's a launch coaster with a 105' loop and loads of inversions and swift turns. Located at Europa Park, Blue Fire is largely considered an important coaster for how well it did things once thought to be reserved for just a few manufacturers.

We put #CreatorsFirst on Google+

A year ago today, Google+ started the Create program. It exists to foster some of the top talent on Google+, connect them together, and allows Google to support their endeavors. I believe that programs like this are vital to any network where users create, share, and connect through content. Google+ Create is vital in helping us show people not just the stuff they're into, but the awesome stuff they're into.

I am incredibly proud to be on this team and am always looking for the next incredible creator. You can apply at https://plus.google.com/create

Happy Birthday Create!

PS. If you want to know more about the Content and Community Management Team does, I wrote up a thorough explanation here: https://plus.google.com/+CarterGibson/posts/JCRV6cPNkSA

My manager +Danielle Buckley rocking it at Google Cloud Next!

Last year, Google+ became part of GSuite, putting it right next to Gmail, Calendar, and Drive. Internally here at Google, we've been using Google+ in a way that we thought other companies could too. For those who don't know, us Googlers have an internal version of Google+ that we use to talk to just each other. That content is private, but we still poke our heads out into public content every once in a while (or all the time) too! If you're wondering why you can sometimes find two profiles for Googlers, this is why.

In 2017, Google+ will increase its focus on the enterprise. While that may sound a little scary if you're a consumer, don't fret. GSuite is well known for its products that are both enterprise and consumer focused. The good news is that both enterprise and consumer users... more »

If you're curious about where Google+ is headed this year and what value it holds for companies, please watch Danielle's talk. As an added incentive, Danielle talks about Google+'s roadmap for 2017 - something that doesn't happen very often at all for Google's products. Enjoy :)___

My entire life, my most important mentors and role models have been women. Whether it's my boss at my first internship, the women in the Kogod Center for Career Development who taught me all I know, my mom, or any of the various women I've worked with in all my roles, I've never once considered the fact that their gender may restrict their impact.

I believe that's what everyone should think - but they don't, so here we are on Women's Day trying to convince sensitive, fragile men that women are equal.

The idea that working, intelligent women are a subversion against our current structure sickens me to my core. We need to raise women to believe that they are entitled to the same success of men and that their ambitions should not be restricted by any man's expectation of her. We need to raise women to believe that they are entitled to the same success of men and that their ambitions should not be restricted by any man's expectation of her. I want a world where women are excited to fight for promotions and education instead of men. I also want a world where men encourage them to do so and fight for their equal treatment.

We are not stronger when we tell women that they are lesser than, property, or that they should be prettier. We are stronger when women are encouraged to be whatever they want to be.

One person that I'd like to call out, specifically here, is +Natalie Villalobos who was the vanguard of community on Google+. #SheInspiresMe to live up to my potential day after day and I am excessively grateful for all of her mentorship. Thanks Natalie :)___

Family time

Over the past two weeks, my parents and I have been spending some quality time together in Vegas and then in Tahoe. #HiImBack Some highlights include seeing Ka (a bucket list item for me), snowboarding through the glades at Northstar, personal pan pizza night with family and friends, and my dad dislocating his shoulder on his last run of the day, but insisting on shoveling snow the same day.

How have you been, Google+? What's new?
