Video of the tesla coils ArcAttack! that uses music to activate the electricity arcs. It's hard to see, but there is someone dancing in the cage. I was hoping to get in the cage and record a video with Glass but didn't want to risk zapping them! But that would have been way cool! #throughglass

Giant bubble making at the Maker Faire. We got the formula for the bubble solutions, which is surprising complex and exact. Not surprising for Maker Faire! #throughglass

Photos taken with Google Glass at the San Mateo Farmer's Market. Wearing Glass got quite a lot of stares and a few people were very excited. One woman asked about privacy concerns -- and she shared that she didn't mind the technology because "I don't do anything that I'd be embarrassed about in public".
I always asked people for their permission to take their picture. But because they couldn't tell when I was taking it, they didn't always look at me!
Overall, it was very easy to take photos, especially with voice commands. The one time I used manual controls was taking the pictures of the cherries -- I didn't want to freak out the other people picking through the pile!

One of the frustrations that the director of the MVTF shared was that it was difficult to show the cramped insides of a tank. So he invited my 14 year old son to climb into the M18 Hellcat with Google Glass to make a video. The wide view angle was ideal of capturing the close-up detail. #throughglass

The kids and I visited the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation in the backwoods of Portola Valley, CA. They have hundres of tanks and other military vehicles. Doug is the director of the foundation and provides a short video introduction. Our 14 year son is a huge World of Tank game player and was thrilled to learn more about the tanks. His fav tank - Russian T-54. More info at www.mvft.org. #throughglass

At Google hearing +Vic Gundotra talk about Google+ to a group of YPO CEOs. Best part is hearing about future scenarios that are possible. Key is maintaining permission and trust with users. Vic admits that Google was not focused on social until 18 months ago. "But now that we are, watch out".

Finally found a way to keep Mac Office apps from re-opening all my previous files when I start the program - this was driving me nuts!. It's a "feature" in Lion OS for application resume - nice, but not for Office. Here's a link to the original forum post, and I've included it here with more detail.
- Close all Office programs, (and any others you want to disable this feature for) and do the following:
-In the Finder Menu, click GO, then hold down Alt (Option) and choose "Library".
- Go to "Saved Application State" folder
- Then, for each program you see listed which you for which you wish to turn the feature off. It will be something like "com.microsoft.Word.savedState"
- Enter the folder, delete all documents by moving them to Trash.
- Highlight the folder again, right-click and select "Get Info". ... more »

New post about Jerry Yang's departure. So many pundits have written off Yahoo! and to some degree Jerry as well. But I'm looking forward to hopefully a new chapter for both of them. In particular, I hope Jerry puts his energy into new ventures and start-ups.
One person note: I felt really old writing this post. But it was only a mere decade ago that Yahoo was riding high.
My colleague +Rebecca Lieb and I were exchanging emails about this - she shared with me, "The era of AOL and Yahoo dominating the web makes us feel old while in reality it was a scant decade ago or less. Google was an infant, Facebook wasn't even in beta at Harvard yet. We're continually asked to predict the future, but what in some industries is a distant vision; a generation away, or perhaps 50 years elsewhere, can be 6 months or a year's time in our world."
I'm... more »

I've been reading "Delivering Happiness" about the Zappos story again, this time listening to CEO Tony Hsieh narrating the audiobook. What's great is that he often has other protagonists, like his co-founders or other employees read the actual emails they wrote. It's a nice personal touch, very Zappos.
I'm reading the book again because as I'm thinking about how Altimeter will accomplish our audacious goals in 2012, it becomes clear that we can do it only if we have a great culture in place to pull all of our efforts together.
I like how Zappos defines their culture and company values -- and moreover, how they live by them each and every day. My favorite is "Build open and honest relationships with communications."
At Altimeter, we live in social media with each other and often with our clients. But nothing beats picking up the... more »

My son turned 13 yesterday and for the first time HE could register on a site and click the box next to "I am at least 13 years old."
I am a stickler - no Facebook account until he turned 13. We're starting slowly, with lots of discussion about who to add as friends (only friends/family I know who are over 13), what to post, how to use apps responsibly.
Should be interesting!

Heading to Sao Paolo Brazil for HSM's Business Forum. Should be interesting to contrast with my recent visit to Beijing. I found Sao Paolo bustling during last visit in March.
I'm also looking forward to holding the Portugese edition of Open Leadership in my hands!
It's a short visit, so all I'll be seeing is my hotel room and conference center! Hope I'll be going back soon to explore and tour more.

I'm heading to China for the World Economic Forum next week. Will be in Dalian on 9/16 then in Beijing 9/17 & 9/18. I'm hoping to do an informal tweetup Saturday night, at or near the Grand Hyatt. Any suggestions on people/companies to meet, or things to do? I have a few meetings set up but am open to adding a few more.
It will be my first time back to China since 1986 -- a completely different time and place.

I'm planning to buy my soon-to-be-13 year old son a new PC gaming system. What would you recommend? He's pretty handy and dad is an electrical engineer so we're thinking of building the machine from components. Question- what components to get? I'm a bit out of date -my Doom-playing days are far behind me.

Plowing thru my todo list so that I can go on vacation! Family is Kenya-bound to dedicate a school we helped build. It's been amazing to see it finally being built, a dream for my husband's former Kenyan business partner to help his village. Help fund the next stage with the link below.
We'll do some safaris along the way - Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara for the wildebeest migration, then hop down to Ngorogoro before heading home.

Loaded Parallels on my new Mac OS X Lion and running my beloved Windows Live Writer without any performance hitches. It's a miracle! I've missed WLW and my blogging has definitely taken a hit as a result. Looking to hitting the blogging circuit in earnest. Thanks to +John Uppendahl for the suggestion and Parallels tutorials.

Setting up Google+ so it feeds Twitter & Facebook to compare engagement & interactions.
To create a feed of Google+ posts, go to http://plusfeed.appspot.com
Add the Google+ user number at the end of this URL for their profile feed. Like this: http://plusfeed.appspot.com/107222163924838615114
I then used TwitterFeed to insert it into my Twitter and Facebook streams.
Thank you +Russell Beattie for the tip!

My brother +Steven Li just asked me if anyone has interest/plans to use Google+ inside the enterprise. Note: This would not be for "brand pages" which will be coming later. Steve's point: "These 'huddles' and hangouts can be very powerful tools for internal use." He's a physician at the Veterans Administration, which is very progressive in their use of technology and cloud.

I'm wondering what people do with multiple emails/Google profiles. For example, this Google profile is linked to my original Gmail address. I'm getting tons of invites/follows on my @altimetergroup.com address as well. I've got a way to manage my various relationships, but not my multiple emails/identities. Facebook makes this easy, resolving multiple emails to one identify. I don't see that feature on Google+....yet.

Busy building out my circles, especially now that Google+ is finally more widely available. Looking forward to sharing more personal pics/movies from my recent family vacation. Which raises a profound question -- what do I share and with which circles? In the past, I just didn't share because of lack of controls.

Back from a week at leonimeadows.com family camp, situated in the middle of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Highlights were mostly of flinging myself off high places. Jumping off waterfalls and 800 foot zip lines were highlights.
