if you were using hangouts.google.com as a shortcut to creating a hangouts video call and are sad that it's now a welcome page...  you can use https://plus.google.com/hangouts/_ for now.   we'll figure out something longer term.

Hangouts, phone calls and Google Voice

Thanks for all of your feedback on last week's Hangouts launch. I wanted to quickly talk about 1) making/receiving phone calls in Gmail, and 2) Google Voice support more generally.

1) Today's version of Hangouts doesn't yet support outbound calls on the web and in the Chrome extension, but we do support inbound calls to your Google Voice number. We're working hard on supporting both, and outbound/inbound calls will soon be available. In the meantime, you can continue using Google Talk in Gmail.

2) Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice, and making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning. Future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly.

People have been asking about how Messenger will be affected by Hangouts, the new communications product Google launched today. Hangouts replaces--and improves on the functionality of Messenger. We are working quickly to bring your Messenger conversation history into Hangouts. Until then we will continue to keep Messenger available for users in the Google+ mobile apps.

Enhancements to the Hangouts API

Since the launch of Google+ Hangouts API last year, we have seen many developers bring the value of real-time communications to their apps. Today, we are announcing a few more enhancements that allow us innovate faster and enable you to build great apps. 

Let’s take a look at what’s new:
New Release Process
We are adopting a Chrome-like channel system for our platform releases.  We’ll have two channels:

Stable Channel: a single Javascript include gives you the latest and greatest APIs as they are finalized.  We will do smaller, more frequent releases in a backwards-compatible manner.

Some highly-requested improvements to Hangouts On Air

Have you ever missed the beginning of a live Hangout On Air and wanted to rewind? How about viewing and sharing your recording right after your broadcast, versus waiting for "processing…"? Today we're launching these, and two other features, to improve your Hangouts On Air experience: 

- Rewind live broadcasts. Regardless when you start watching, you can always go back to the beginning.

- Access recordings immediately after your broadcast. Once you're no longer On Air, your recording will be waiting for you on YouTube.

Hangouts Remote Desktop: tech support with a personal touch

For those of you who play tech support for friends and family, there’s now a Hangouts app to make things easier -- powered by the same technology behind Chrome Remote Desktop. 

Hangouts Remote Desktop lets you help others by controlling their computer remotely (with their permission, of course). And because you’re both in a Hangout, you can talk with and see each other during the session.

To get started, just start a Hangout and click View More Apps > Add Apps > Hangouts Remote Desktop.

If you’ve done Hangouts, you’ve almost certainly experienced it.  It’s hard to chat over that typing.  Maybe you’ve accidentally been that typist, and didn’t realize it until someone muted you!   That’s why we’ve added automatic muting when you type.  Specifically:

- If someone keeps typing in a Hangout, their mic will be muted until they stop
- They'll see an in-Hangout notification, so they know they're not interrupting the conversation
- We’ll do this for larger Hangouts (4+ people).

We hope this feature makes your Hangouts experience even more enjoyable, and we welcome your feedback in the comments!

Making it easier to place phone calls from inside Hangouts

Sometimes you want to invite someone to join your Hangout -- but maybe they're not at their computer, or maybe they don't have an internet connection. Either way, you can call their phones from your Hangout (http://goo.gl/khFot). And today we're making this calling experience a little bit better. For example:

- There's now a proper keypad, so you can navigate phone menus as necessary, and end the call with a single click
- If you're the person who placed the call, you'll see information like call duration, and cost per minute

Improving accessibility in Hangouts

Accessibility is something we care a lot about on the Hangouts team. The Hangout Captions app, for example, enables live transcription services for the deaf and hard of hearing (http://goo.gl/4RujF). And "Take the Floor" makes it easier for sign language speakers to do a Hangout together (http://goo.gl/chyKS). Today we're rolling out two accessibility improvements in Hangouts - a Sign Language Interpreter app, and a fuller set of keyboard shortcuts. 

1) Using the Sign Language Interpreter app, deaf or hard of hearing users who prefer sign language can invite interpreters to speak and sign for them during a Hangout. They'll always see their interpreter at the top right of the window, and they'll become the focus of the Hangout whenever their interpreter speaks for them. Ability to use Hangout apps as a page
I am not sure when this 'feature' launched, but THIS IS HUGE NEWS!

You are now able to set a username/password for your Google+ page as an owner. This allows you to use third party tools like Hangout apps. You can also log into your page directly by using the username/password combo.

This means you can run +Hangout Toolbox for instance and lower thirds.

In the future that may also allow you to connect a YouTube channel directly to your page, which will make it easier for you to record your live Hangouts (HOA) to the correct YouTube channel.

More Hangouts love for different bandwidth environments

Today we're excited to launch two new features that improve the Hangouts experience in areas with low and/or unreliable connectivity:

1) Bandwidth slider. At the top right of every hangout is a new slider that lets you adjust your bandwidth preferences in real-time. This makes it easier to keep hangouts going, even in areas with poor connectivity.

2) Audio-only mode. Choose this mode to send and receive audio only, and thus, significantly reduce your bandwidth requirements. Other participants will only see your profile picture, but they'll hear you loud and clear.

Both of these features are coming your way today but they're rolling out separately so you may see one before you see the other. Very soon both features will be available to everyone, so give 'em a try and let us know what you... more »
