They're not called sneaker waves because they soak your sneakers. Though they'll do that.

This 6-second exposure was sort of a test shot. The one after this was set to be 15 seconds, but halfway through that one, the tide decided to come in all at once. I grabbed my tripod (and my soaked camera bag, which almost got washed away) and ran, adrenaline pumping. Don't mess with that ocean!

Even though it's exaggerating, I'm sharing this for #DamnNearDiedThursday  by +Dan Ballard.
Also #LongExposureThursday  by +Le Quoc and +Francesco Gola.
Also, why not #MFLensesFriday  by +Michael Zieschang and +Michiel Valk. Used my current favorite lens, the 24mm 2.8 AI-S, AKA the "sexy MF."

Hi there! I guess this is my intro to the LE community.  :-)
I have been shooting for a while -- my dad taught me how to shoot star tracks on a Minolta when I was in grade school. But just this past year or so have I been really into LE. Come to think of it, that is also partly due to my dad, who bought me an ND400 filter for Christmas (well, it was on my Amazon wishlist).   ;-)
I live in Portland, and love getting shots of the waterfront. There are also some beautiful waterfalls in the area that are great for LE.
I'm looking forward to seeing some good stuff here!

Spot meter + AE-Lock

This is one of my favorite button combinations. With the dry/sunny spell we've been having in Portland this past week, there's lots of bright light in the house that we're not used to -- perfect time to use spot metering!
Just change to spot metering mode (I'm usually in matrix), point at the bright spot, press and hold AE-L and compose and take your shot.
This is also fun for the opposite effect, for example when shooting a person in a bright room. Spot meter on their face, and everything else gets washed out. Super cool.
Anyway, this is probably a tad on the saturated side, but I don't care.  :3

Tree of Life

This sculpture by Clark Wiegman, sits beautifully in Victor Steinbrueck Park in Seattle (right next to the Pike Place Market), and was donated to the Homeless Remembrance Project.
"Blown by winds of change, a lone iconic tree bends while rooted to the earth. Metaphorically, this image represents both the difficult challenges and the encouraging possibilities of real change."

I took this photo this past weekend, on a trip I took with my wife (and daughter!) to celebrate our 11th(!) wedding anniversary.

Finding Infinity

I just returned from a lovely trip to California with my wife and daughter. One night, we camped under some redwoods in Mendocino County (somewhere between Willits and Fort Bragg), and were treated to a beautiful sky. Shooting stars too!

This was my first try at non-LE night photography. I was using an old cheapo 18-55 kit lens. It's autofocus with no focus guides, and infinity is not all the way to one end of the focus ring, but rather just shy of that. In the dark, autofocus doesn't work, and getting exact focus is especially important when your aperture is all the way open (which you need to get the Milky Way). So... Live View to the rescue!  (though, even with that, it was hard to find a good star to focus on!)  Any tips from seasoned star shooters?

Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon

My wife and daughter were super sweet to let me walk around and take pictures all day yesterday on our beach trip...

This is my first swing at a #LongExposure  since watching +Joel Tjintjelaar's masterclass videos -- actually I haven't even watched the whole thing yet! It's chock full of info, and I'm taking it in slowly.

I didn't get any compositions yesterday that I'm 100% happy with, but this exposure was good enough to start putting the new techniques to work. Fun stuff! I also allowed myself to be a little sloppy in processing (note the halos, and sloppy edges), since I'm low on time (and this took me an hour or 2 of processing as is), and this isn't the ideal shot I was going for.

Technology can be stressful. But it's great when it all works out.

Two things that had been gnawing at me -- hot pixels, and light leakage -- the bane of long exposure photographers! -- I think I figured out workarounds for this weekend.

This photo is a rework of a previous post. I have a new ND filter coming in the mail, so expect more in the near future...  ^_^

Here's another from our little camping trip to Mt Hood a couple-three weeks ago.
My wife thinks I've oversaturated this one with bright greens, but I like this one better than the other version. I blame it on the colorblindness. Maybe I should stick to B&W.  ;-)

Maybe a stretch to call this a waterfall, but sharing for #waterfallwednesday  (curated by +Eric Leslie) anyway!

I highly recommend this place for your organic farm education needs, or just an outing where you want to get a little closer to the earth (Earth?).

No tripod used here.. I think I used a tree stump or a rock or something.

My most recent post (https://plus.google.com/u/0/110551370921127208518/posts/U5ac1rwpbTj) was my first try at long exposures with my new camera (D7000). Previously I'd used my D70s pretty extensively taking long exposures, and never noticed any hot pixels. But now, whoa! What the heck are all those little white dots? (You can even see them by looking closely at the jpg I posted, especially noticeable in the darker upper left corner.) Newer cameras supposedly have less aggressive noise reduction, in order to preserve detail (don't quote me on this). But they do offer an in-camera solution, "Long Exposure Noise Reduction," which basically means you take your picture (say, a 5 minute exposure), then the camera takes another picture of the same shutter speed, but with the shutter closed ("dark frame"). So I set to looking around the 'net for other options, and there are plenty. The solution in this link looks promising, and easy enough!___

#Portland , from way up on the hill.

I finally spent some time tweaking the AF Fine Tune on the new D7000. Got out some test focus charts and the tripod. I'm happier with the resolution of my pics now. :-)

This is a 3-exposure HDR, no tripod.. I used a chain-link fence as a sort of monopod.

Hi again G+ers!
After a sort of photo snapping hiatus (well, unless you count Instagram), I am back! The past few months I've been busy framing and hanging some of my pics at a cafe, and I also did my first commissioned shoots (one for a friend's engagement, another for a bar's website). With the dough I got myself a D7000, and here is my first post as a result of that purchase.
Taken from the Burnside Bridge two nights ago.

It starts slow, so feel free to skip the first 5 minutes if you just want the best parts.
(Moderators -- let me know if this community isn't meant for this kind of post.. ;))

Yes..another "color or bw?" post.  :-)
I think I'm leaning toward the desaturated one, but the colorful one has, well, that color that's drawing me in. Any strong opinions either way?

What happens to a heart when the tide rolls in, waves crash and pull, and the sand underneath starts to give way? Does it change shape, get dragged to sea in pieces, or hold steady?
There will always be more rocks.. and more reshaping to do.

My contribution to #lovewednesday  (curated by +Pierluigi Failla +Love Wednesday.)

I carried a couple of bags of rocks (seen in my previous post) to the shore, and +sarah sanderling helped me shape the heart... I love her.

A lovely trip to the Oregon Coast this weekend, with the family and a couple of friends... all of whom were patient with my shutterbuggery.
After a sneaker wave nearly washed away my camera bag (not to mention my tripod and camera), I paid respect to the incoming tide and stayed up in the driftwood.
This one was shot with the trusty Hoya R72 Infrared filter, and processed and toned in Silver Efex Pro.

Sharing with  #monochromemonday  (curated by +Jerry Johnson et al), and +Landscape Photography  (by +Margaret Tompkins).

Hey guys.. My band (Gimme a Beer) played at a party last weekend, and I managed to get a mediocre recording of it. Here are some of the songs, if you're interested!  (The volume's a little low.. you might have to crank it.. never hurts!  ;))
Cissy Strut (Gimme A Beer) (5-minute funk tune)
Back in the Basement (Gimme a Beer) (8+ minute jam that gets out there a little)
Song for My Father (Gimme a Beer) (a mellow 5-minute jazz standard)
Good Times (Gimme a Beer) (a 12+ minute jam with a full-on space section)

A coworker and I were lamenting the fact that neither of us had had a chance to shoot much lately, when we got the bright idea to organize a lunchtime photowalk. There are enough photo geeks in our office that we had instant critical mass (5 for the first turnout, but there will be more). Here are my results!

up

World Trade Center, Portland.

This was a handheld HDR (3 exposures) that I took on Father's Day, when the 3 of us were wandering around downtown after a delicious breakfast. (I had a lox bagel -- yum.)
I'm sure that a lot of people would find this (and a lot of my pics) to be overprocessed. But... I can't help it.  I don't want to use digital darkroom tricks as a crutch, but maybe that's just my style right now. It's hard not to have thoughts like, "maybe it's time I move on from these building shots, and learn how to photograph people."  I dunno, maybe it doesn't matter.

Return to Foundation

I've always been pulled in by old sci-fi book covers. I just started re-reading the Foundation trilogy, so my sensorium is putting a retro-future edge on much of what I see. When I walked by this building downtown yesterday, I knew exactly what I wanted the final product to look like.

Do you find that what you're reading/watching changes the photos you take, or how you process them?
