Stuff and Non-Sense

I love the hardware on the HTC One, but HTC's Sense 5 is just annoying the hell out of me. I'll miss the Zoe function, but it's time to install a new ROM. Unlocking the bootloader was easy, thanks to HTC (H/T), and rooting just took a few steps thanks to The Cult of Android (http://www.cultofandroid.com/26527/rooting-the-htc-one-the-right-way-how-to/) but now to choose a ROM.

Looks like Trickdroid is the only one people are using in any numbers (there's a CM 10.1 but it's pretty new). Here goes nothing!

A few unretouched images from the HTC One - bright sunny day with lots of contrast. Good color reproduction. Pro tip: either turn off Zoe or turn off G+ auto-upload. My photo stream is loaded with images - about 15 images per Zoe shot.

The Oculus Rift is very responsive, but there are a few negatives. It doesn't fit over my glasses, and the resolution of the imagery is pretty low. Still VR head gear has made significant strides since I first tried it 20 years ago.

Neverwhere on the air

Neil Gaiman's radio adaptation of Neverwhere began last night on BBC 4 starring Benedict Cumberbatch. After a little digging I found a podcast of it - the first episode is downloadable March 22. I'm hoping they'll post all six!

Neverwhere was originally a TV show, then a novel (which I loved) but Neil says he always wanted to make it a radio drama most.

This is my Papa (grandpa) JD. He's been in the hospital since I last saw him in the summertime. It was so weird. One day he was taking me fishing, the next he had a cold. He got this rare lung disease and after 7 months, one lung transplanted, and lots of time in recovery, medicare is running out. He's due for another lung transplant soon, and we've all been praying for him. My Papa is tough, a non-smoker, a happy guy, and close to all of us. I want him to be at my wedding and I'll do whatever it takes to make sure he's there.

This is terribly sad news: Aaron Swartz committed suicide in New York City on Friday, according to this MIT Tech article:

Aaron was facing possible life in prison because he allegedly tried to make journal articles public. The Justice Department's indictment accuses Aaron of connecting his computer to MIT's network (without authorization -- he was at Harvard, not MIT) and sucking down over 1 million already published academic journal articles from the JSTOR database, which the professors and other authors who wrote them probably would have liked to be free to the public anyway. I had an idea that there is a place for a club, for a format where Sydney TWIT Army members could meet regularly to socialise and just be geeks with like minded people.
What would we do? Bring your Apple Mini Micro Maxy, your Raspberry Pi, your Nexus 7 or your Windows 8. Show off your hacks or ask for help.

If you are at all interested, leave me a message and I will add you to a group. Also leave ideas of what you might like to do or see, venues or if you want to help out.
This might be the first International Chapter of the TWIT Army.

Exciting news, I thought appropriate to share on G+!

I'm joining the YouTube/ Next Lab team at the end of November. It means I'll be working with a lot of YouTube partner channels in a new studio located in Los Angeles. My focus: live-streaming. And yes, that means I'm moving and taking the husband with me. Don't worry, +Tom Merritt will still host Tech News Today, but I'll let him give you those details!

Yes, I'm bummed to leave the Bay Area, and I spent a lot of time thinking (and stressing) about the decision to move forward. I'm also sad to leave the Always On team at CNET and +Molly Wood. It really wasn't that long ago that we launched the new show.

Coffee questions for Mr. Coffee Geek...

I'm very happy with the base settings of my new Breville dual-boiler plus Baratza Vario combination but now I'm ready to play.

Currently using the default setting for 200°F on the espresso machine, and grinding at 3/K for 10 secs on the Vario. I just bought 8oz of Sumatran single-estate beans french roasted today. Fabulous crema.

My question: how should I go about trying different temperatures and grinds. Where would you start? Why?
