Via +Jelena Jovanovic today, I stumbled upon Automatic.com, a new gadget that will help you track and optimize your driving behavior through data analysis and simplifying the information with the help of a smartphone app. I bought one immediately. This falls in line with my year-long use of +Fitbit, and the acquisition of a Nest thermostat, which has us saving hundreds of dollars already.

Knowledge is power. Knowledge based on data that makes your life better is incredible. I'm excited about more apps and gadgets that help me live better and more efficiently.

Google's newest employee is my awe-inspiring mother, +Nada Miljkovic. She's joining the Google X team as a hardware test engineer and PCB designer, starting June 3.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_x) Here's to more mother-daughter teams in engineering! And here's my shameless pride -- the referral I wrote for Mom:

Mobile Data Goes Up, Phone Calls Go Down, Can't Explain That

Last month set an all time low for us in terms of voice minutes, with less than an hour of our 700 minute allotment used. But at the same time, I was nearing the capacity of our mobile data plan and getting regular warnings I might exceed the cap. People aren't holding their phones to their ears as much as they used to. Instead, they're looking down at them. Is it more efficient for you to post, text, or email instead?

An eerily accurate Google-themed rendering of me with colleagues

My deskmate +Scott Knaster has a talented artist for a daughter. Based on her loose interpretations of stories Scott brings home about me and other coworkers, here's what she came up with. I'm obviously the Android-centric robot. +Phoebe Peronto is on the right with her S.L.A.P. (Sounds Like a Plan!) catchphrase, and Scott is on the far right, missing some hair and holding a trusty calculator. Scott owes us answers for the bird.

Is it a Fantastic Four Google Edition? I'm not exactly sure. But that's definitely not all that far off the mark.

You'll Love This Incredible Caterpillar I Found

Taking my kids on one of their weekend walks, I found this caterpillar in Mountain View by Stevens Creek Trail. I thought its shape, features and colors were really remarkable. I snapped a few shots with my Galaxy Nexus of the caterpillar on the back of my hand, and I like how this turned out. My mom (+Terrie Gray) thinks it's a tussock moth caterpillar. Anybody know for sure?

+Zach Cumer of CNN fell in love with the Chromebook Pixel and bought one of his own after reviewing a unit from Google. He says, "it only takes turning the computer on once to realize how different it is from anything else out there," explaining the trackpad is "the best I have ever used,"and the screen "is simply amazing," adding "the way it renders colors is completely unique."

His summary: " I found this computer to be a refreshing approach to computing in the cloud, thanks to its hi-def screen and wicked fast computing power. My month with the Pixel thoroughly changed my thinking on how a computer should behave while handling my files. With the Pixel, I'm totally on cloud nine."
