NASA3,040,240Having trouble watching the event? Try watching directly on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LI5JiWEfs --------- Have you ever asked a question to someone in space? No? Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising.NASA Long-Distance Google+ Hangout to Connect with Space Station2013-02-22 16:30:008295

You know, as a decidedly non-trendy 53-year-old, I never quite "got" the appeal of Instagram, until I started following all the models and celebrities who were promoting what became known as the Fyre Festival fiasco (see the attached Vanity Fair article for details). I had found their names on a copy of the Microsoft PowerPoint slides used to promote the failed festival. Once I did that, I began to understand the appeal... it's a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous.

A good article about a massive fan shrine to Duran Duran in the virtual world of Second Life.

"I lingered in the Duran Duran Universe for hours and still nobody else showed up, nobody came to dance or mud wrestle. It dawned on me that Second Life must be filled with worlds like this: virtual spaces that users spent years labouring over, that allowed a genuine sense of community to be formed, but which mostly now lay barren and forgotten, with histories that will never be archived. These worlds will remain untouched long after their users cease to visit - like virtual museums - until someone at Linden Lab decides Second Life has run its course."

Tried out this new free virtual reality art tool from Google. I loved this new app. Great fun and you need no special skills to be a creator in VR. Thanks for another great app Google! I also want the ability to save my creations in OBJ or FBX formats right now all you can do is publish them to the website which is nice but kind of useless if you want to build objects to place in virtual worlds like High Fidelity or Sansar. https://uploadvr.com/blocks-googles-new-art-app-designed-make-vr-content-creation-easy/

This evening I had the privilege of attending an art gallery opening in virtual reality. I put on my Oculus Rift VR headset and took out my Touch hand controllers and launched myself into the virtual social world called VRChat, where Infinity VR Art Gallery had an exhibit featuring over 70 works from artists around the world (photography, paintings and sculpture). Unfortunately, I was only able to take panoramic photos which leads to some distortion of the images, but here are three shots of the exhibit. Almost as fascinating as the works themselves were the wide variety of avatars VRChat users used to represent themselves! In the pictures you can see three avatars that were my favourites: a tiny Piglet from Winnie the Pooh, Timon the meerkat from the Lion King, and finally a celestial being of light with fireworks going off in his brain :-) it was all great fun and I can highly recommend a visit. This morning I installed and played Everest VR, an immersive a virtual reality experience that lets you join an expedition to the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal. Everest VR really gives you the feeling of being there on the mountain, and it also gives you an appreciation of the effort involved in the climb!

People might not "get" my passionate interest in virtual worlds and virtual reality. Today I watched a particular episode of the excellent British science fiction anthology TV series Black Mirror, called "San Junipero", and I'm interested to see if anybody else has watched it and what they thought about it.

It raises the fascinating question: what will happen to our virtual world avatars over time? Will I be able to keep my avatar running, just upgrading it with new features and abilities as they become available? (I'm willing to bet, yes.) Will I even be able to inhabit my avatar someday?

Don't read the attached Wikipedia article is don't want to be spoiled as to what happens in "San Junipero".

Well I just spent a whole bunch of Linden dollars in the virtual world of Second Life to get a brand new look for my avatar. Signature Gianni mesh body, Catwa Stanley Bento mesh head, and the Erwin head skin from Stray Dog. Here's the final result, I am quite happy with it! He looks pretty realistic, don't you think? Google has just released a major update to their Tilt Brush three-dimensional art creation tool. There's now a new website that users can upload their creations to. You can download and remix other user's sketches (if the artist permits), which is very cool! Here's one of my Tilt Brush sketches that I can now share with others via their new website. You can rotate and pan around the art in your web browser.

Unsolicited testimonial: I just wanted to say that I love Google Play Music. You can pick any favourite song and it will auto-generate a music stream for you, that's usually spot on. A single account costs $9.99 while a family account can contain up to six members and costs $14.99. You can use Google Play Music for free, but you'll be limited to using radio stations (with ads) and listening to music that you have personally uploaded to the service (no ads). It's worth the cost in my opinion.

Heads up, especially if you are a Bank of Montreal customer.

Typical Ransomware Attack: BMO

Just received this ransomware attack via email. I happen to be a BMO customer but I never communicate with the bank via email.

The email originates from bmodocuments.com, a domain registered just a few hours ago. The email itself is poorly constructed. The hope is that recipients will click through to the payload .doc file.

My click-through is on a Chromebook so I don't get to the "enable macros" portion where, of course, the malicious action takes place.

This, this, a thousand times this! Thank you for speaking up +Gideon Rosenblatt! It's just heartbreaking to see how far Google+ has fallen since it's very promising start.

Losing My Patience with Google+

Over the last six months or so I have watched as the quality of engagement here on Google+ has steadily declined. I have watched my follower count fluctuate and flatline. I have watched as people I used to engage with quite a bit here have left or dramatically scaled back their investments of time here. And yes, I have seen my own enthusiasm for investing time here wane significantly.

I ask myself why and the answers are never as simple as I would like. In the end though, I have come to the sad conclusion that the real thing that is killing Google+ is just plain bad management.

Lack of Attention
One gets the real sense that many of the people now charged with running Google+ don't really understand what it was that once made this service so good in its early days. Indeed, one gets the sense that few of the people managing the service today even really use Google+. There are a few noteworthy exceptions like +Yonatan Zunger and +Leo Deegan, of course. I once made a circle with some 50+ Googlers who were once active here, and when I click on that stream, well, it feels a lot like a ghost town.

+Bradley Horowitz, the VP in charge of Streams, Photos and Sharing, (which is where Google+ sits within the Google org structure) hasn't posted here on Google+ in half a year.

Oh, and remember +Luke Wroblewski, who used to manage Google+ and would send out all those updates on the redesign? Well, he hasn't posted a single thing here in over 7 weeks (even though @lukew is quite active on Twitter). You know why? I just happened to check his LinkedIn profile, and he's apparently no longer managing Google+. I don't recall seeing any announcement of this change - just a sudden silence from the man perhaps most responsible for the UI makeover of Google+.

Rudderless and Un-resourced
That decision to remake the Google+ UI followed a long string of decisions going back to the separation of Photos and Hangouts, each of which have seriously hurt the service. I know there were probably some good reasons to move to the new, mobile-dominant (as opposed to "mobile-friendly") UI, but the lack of enduser empathy from deprecating all the old functionality really was pretty staggering. Much of it hasn't come back, and much of what has is so stripped down (e.g. Events, community moderation) that it isn't really that usable.

As users, we have been asked to be patient and to have faith in the new strategy. Because I have been such a huge fan of Google+ for so long, that is exactly what I have done. I've been patient. I've believed. Believed that some big, cool fix was coming down the pike that would not only fix all the problems caused by the UI decision, but actually start innovating again with some cool new functionality.

Yes, we got Collections, and they actually are quite useful even if they do need a lot of work still. But that's really about it. It's been a couple years now and the silence is stultifying.

And finally, it hit me:

Maybe this is it. Maybe Google has significantly curtailed its investments in this network. Maybe the management squandered the scarce resources it did have on a redesign that users weren't really even asking for. And maybe, just maybe, what we see right now is pretty much what we're going to get.

User Investments
And this is where I start to get really mad. Like many others here, I have invested a lot of personal time and energy building a following here. Like many of you, I have poured heart and soul into filling this place not just with great content, but also with a sense of community. I could have made those investments in Twitter or Facebook or reddit, but like many of you, I made them here. And now I'm starting to wonder how smart of a decision that was.

All of this is particularly raw right now because I'm starting to play around a bit with the new distributed social network called Mastodon (https://mastodon.technology/@gideonro). It's far from perfect, but one thing that is very different is that it is open source and federated, rather than centrally owned and controlled.

There are lots of implications to this different model. For one, there is lots of competition and innovation in the works because Mastodon sits on top of GNU Social and rests within a "Fediverse" of related, and interoperable, social network platforms. They are working on solutions that make it easy to export your content from one platform to another - to prevent lock-in. Also, there is a lot of visibility on exactly what investments are being made in the platform by various contributors.

More importantly though, there is a very conscious understanding that the value of these networks is only partially the result of the software developers behind these solutions. Just as much of it lies with the end users.

In the end, this is the thing that I am most frustrated about right now with Google+. End users have made this place every bit as much as the coders and product planners behind Google+. This isn't to in any way diminish the importance of those contributions. But what I do find frustrating is the way that Google seems to regularly dismiss the importance, and the real economic and social value, of end user contributions. This was true with Google Reader, and sadly it appears to be true with Google+.

I'm still rooting for Google+ to turn things around, of course. I have a huge soft spot for this place, given all the great learning I've done here with my fellow travelers. But one thing is clear: I'm losing my patience, and I don't think I'm alone. ___This, this, a thousand times this! Thank you for speaking up +Gideon Rosenblatt! It's just heartbreaking to see how far Google+ has fallen since it's very promising start.

Dammit! My Shaw cable modem went on the fritz tonight. And the soonest they can send someone out is Tuesday. I am reduced to my 3G Rogers service on my iPad 🙁 and I'm going to go the whole weekend without broadband Internet! Aaaaaargh! I may have to go.... outside!?!!

This is the first public preview video of the in-development virtual world Sansar by Linden Lab. I'm very, very lucky to be one of the first few people allowed to beta test this new environment, which works well and looks gorgeous, even if you don't have a virtual reality headset (saving my pennies to buy one, though!). 2017 will be the year that virtual/augmented reality hits the mainstream.

This is going to come as a very unpleasant surprise to someone at some point...

I predict that if they start charging for Windows after banging on everyone to upgrade for free, it will be the end of Windows.
For the average user there is no reason why they need a full version of Windows on their computer at home. I prefer PC gaming, but it isn't necessary. And I prefer a full Office suite and a few useful utility programs. But for the price and the hassle I've been thinking the PC I've got at home will likely be my last. If Microsoft pulls these shenanigans, then they've made my mind up for me.

My apologies for the Forbes link, beware of their ad blocker policy. ___This is going to come as a very unpleasant surprise to someone at some point...
