Only character I remember by name was the god Kama, who worked with the protagonist as a sidekick; he was on a quest for Buddhist enlightenment.

I read it before I knew anything about the legends it was based on, and unfortunately for the life of me cannot recall the author or the title, and it's one of the books I lost when I had a house fire.  A minor work, written somewhere around 1970ish.

I dig through the web from time to time trying to find it, but no such luck.  I want to reread it now, that I'm up on the legendary and historical background, and would maybe appreciate it much better.

Some day, maybe.___

Title went clickbaity with that word massive, although there is a class based finding:  The researchers  found this: “When women move from lower-income area to a higher-income area, they pretty much took on the preferences of women around them,” said Galak. “On the other hand, when they moved from a wealthier area to a less wealthy area, what we found is that women pretty much stuck with their preferences.”

Interesting; according to the study, the most productive of actual food was a dairy vegetarian diet, and the second most was a dairy-egg-vegetarian one, due in part to the fact that it would maximize lands that weren't useful for crop growing while minimizing acreage used for animal feed.
