Mia Voss37,160It's a New Year! Let's jumpstart it with a Weekend Edition of @109324423871490315778 Power Chat.  Check out this amazing lineup of panel guests who will fill us in on what they think is the latest & greatest for 2015: @115620878851836664537 - Author, Speaker, Analyst. _I travel a lot. I surf the web even more. Over the last four years I've spent time in fifteen countries and three continents making airports and hotel rooms more of a constant, for me, than home. I also spend more hours, each day, online than most people would consider to be healthy. The one stability in all this is Google+ where I can be found, time allowing, on most days. It has become my anchor._ _In my posts, interviews and podcasts I add pieces to the puzzle. I explain how each one fits in a bigger picture. How that bigger picture then makes sense. Sensemaking changes everything._ _Before I got here, I used to be a corporate rat who used to be a journalist, before I jumped ship into full-time writing, speaking and blogging._ @115137076899523837053 - One of my favorite teenagers & aspiring DIY host. I rely on Kiragan to help me keep up with the cool kids!   Kiragan is an eighth grader and an aspiring You Tuber.  You can find her watching a season a day of Netflix when she is not playing basketball four days a week.  In the future she hopes to own her own business because she loves people and being her own boss. Her Instagram is the bomb.com and you should follow her!  http://instagram.com/kiragan_07 https://twitter.com/kiragan_07 YouTube: Kiragan Mercer @103158283130494425954: Rachel is pursuing concurrent Master's degrees in urban planning and information science at the University of Michigan, with the aspiration to design human-computer interactions at the urban scale. Specifically, Rachel is interested in designing how people will interact with emerging technologies -- such as drones, autonomous cars, and pervasive computing -- within the city, with an eye towards making sure these technologies promote positive human interactions and greater community engagement. She has previously worked at the Brookings Institution and the World Resources Institute, and holds BAs in English and environmental humanities from Stony Brook University.  @106628164966864339997 - @112784356967153325101 Zack Jones is a college dropout entrepreneur that is shooting to change the way we define housing. When he decided to quit his academic career and his day job to pursue a new path as a business owner, he had no idea where his tiny idea was going to take him. Fast forward three years to now and Zack has brought his idea off the napkin and into the most demanding phase of a new business, the startup. Aside from being obsessed with tiny houses, Zack is passionate about creating learning pathways that are uniquely tailored to each individual persons needs and excited to chat about how starting tiny is a promising first step to something so much larger! Yifat Cohen87,659*Ever wanted to talk to a successful Internet marketer like Jeff Johnson and ask him straight up questions?* _Coming up this Tue. as part of the Inner Circle perks_ For the longest time @102161332999811797009  was (and still is) my best role model for building a business around the lifestyle you want. I met Jeff a few years ago in Detroit at one of his seminars and barely dared to come up and say hi. Then I met him again at 's MetaMind event where we managed to grab lunch and talk G+. As I was creating content for his latest launch, I discovered the real life of this multimillionaire, family man - *he likes his time off.*  Most successful people I know are also workaholics and hardly have any time to enjoy their hard earned money. But not Jeff. He takes 2-3 times off during the summer to go finishing with his family, he doesn't work at night and he ensures he enjoys what he does in his biz. *How does he do it? - join the Inner Circle to find out.* Members of the Inner Circle get to join the Hangout and interact with Jeff face to face, asking any questions they might have about their own online business, helping them leap to the next level. Since I'm re-launching the Inner Circle with this hangout, you get to *test our Inner Circle community for free!* How cool is that! Check back here before Friday for the link to join the front lines of those taking Hangouts to the next level, and reserve your spot to hangout with world experts face to face. ------------------- #jeffjohnson   #hangoutsonair   #gplusgotogal   #trafficgeneration   #leads   #webtraffic   #conversionoptimization   #onlinemarketing   #makingmoneyonline   #membership  Building a business around your lifestyle - with Jeff Johnson2014-11-11 19:00:0072
martin shervington1,458,835You know I spend most of my time on Google+, right? Well, increasingly I've been valuing the role of using Twitter alongside - the cross platform connections make a huge difference to building relationships. So, I thought you all may like to dig a little deeper and there is no one better to ask in than @108947920975167979671 on this one as he is just bringing out a new edition to his book. He has a solid business view of social as well. So, hope to see you on Wednesday; and we will be taking questions so please ask away! About the book: The book was initially created to solve a problem. The most common question am I asked is, "Can you help me understand Twitter?"  That is just not something that can be addressed over a cup of coffee! So I wrote this book, first to help my students, but it caught on has loyal fans all around the world.  The Tao of Twitter teaches you the practical MINDSET for success, not just a bunch of theoretical or technical suggestions. If you follow the strategy in the book, I know it can work for you because I have seen it impact hundreds of lives. The Tao of Twitter is beyond a book. It's a movement. Welcome to a global community that is unleashing the power of this amazing communication platform to connect to the world and drive new business benefits in wonderful and unexpected ways! The Tao of Twitter! beatstone2,129,603+Artists In The Plus brings you "In The Spotlight!" with more music, less talk, and a private backstage hangout party every show! Watch the 30 minute broadcast with +Anitra Jay! Then join us for chat, and more songs, in the After Party. Singer/Songwriter, Poet, Entertainer - New Orleans native,  +Anitra Jay  grew up surrounded by the sounds of jazz, blues, and R&B. Gospel was also influential in her life and when she was a young girl she joined the church choir. “When everyone swayed from side to side, I made my own beat and bumped into everyone around me, including my Mom,” she says. Needless to say, she learned how to keep a rhythm. Now a self-taught singer/songwriter, +Anitra Jay draws inspiration from a range of artists from Michael Jackson, Bill Withers, and Donnie Hathaway to India Arie, Jill Scott, and Laura Izibor. Her music is a sweet down-to-earth blend of soul and poetry with modern sensibilities. She effortlessly combines soul-catching melodies with tales of real life experiences as she delivers a unique mix of prose, song and improvisation that leaves her audience with an experience they won’t easily forget. +Anitra Jay is the founder of the Charlotte Singer/Songwriters & Poets Circle - a networking and gigging resource group for local and regional artists."In The Spotlight!" Susanne Ramharter88,470Am Freitag, dem 16.8. kommt +Michael Lee Johnson nach Wien. Michael unternimmt soeben dabei wildes (wahnsinniges?)

My Korean mother is pretty good at cooking - she once owned a pop-up noodle shop in Busan, South Korea.  My American mother keeps it basic.  It's shown me that passion for cooking is really something you're born with - even if you have no idea what's on the ingredient list. My food will be easy, cheap to make, and fun to eat... it will also have a twist of the Midwest, since I tend to pass on anything too fishy. We'll be cooking easy and inexpensive Korean food!                                     ************************** On Sunday's show, Michelle will be making *Mandu Two Ways* - (*Mandoo*) She’ll be making fried dumplings and dumpling soup.  It’s the perfect Korean comfort food to start off the wintry New Year!  Here is the recipe: http://bit.ly/S7hvOn *Watch Michelle LIVE on this Event's page, on +Larry Fournillier's Profile Page* or on www.hangoutnetworks.com  #hoa   #hangoutsonair   #michellelikoreankitchen   #koreanrecipes  Michelle Li's Korean Kitchen - Mandu : Episode 01 - 6:00PM(EST)2013-01-07 00:30:0057

Mick Fealty14,151All across the world, systems are crashing. In banking we've seen debt slicing and long haul internal systems like that of RBS/NatWest/Ulster Bank literally falling apart. In Europe post war notions of solidarity are being stretched to bursting as sovereign nations argue over the degree to which fiscal sovereignty can be shared.   Further afield the Arab nations continue in popular tumult after several generations of acquiescence under varying degrees of autocracy. Yet like Greece, Spain and Portugal to the north - each just one or two generations ahead - the Arab world is finding that democracy does not come in a shiny, ready wrapped box. Even in more settled democracies, once venerable institutions are finding huge problems keeping up with the speed at which their citizens can communicate, not through them but around them.   Why not join our panel this Friday for #DigitalLunch  at the usual time, where we will attempt to serve starters about 1pm and finish before the hour is out? #DigitalLunch: Crashing systems2012-09-28 14:00:007

Good Morning Google+
while reading about a marvelous exhibition called Organic Matters at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, (see here: http://goo.gl/B8j24T) I came across the work of Ysabel May, a Canadian born artist who now lives and works in Texas.

Originally, my attention was caught by this work, The Reflection, which is on view at the exhibition, because it reminded me of the painstaking detail so often shown in the works of old masters. For a moment, I actually thought it might be an oil painting from the 17th or 18th century. But a closer look showed that this work actually has a few surreal aspects.

The reflections, for which the work is named, are not only at the bottom, where we would expect to see them, but also at the top of the work, where they simply make no sense. While the floral wreath at the bottom of the work reminds me of... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art:
The last few days were spent in Munich, mostly in the two wonderful Museums the Old and New Pinakothek. Here just a teaser of how I learned to love Rubens.

I love it when things in nature that are normally inanimate defy our preconceptions. This example is from Yellowstone (where else).

(Almost) kitschy Landscape
Until yesterday, the weather on my #RVTrek2016  has been fantastic, as has been the landscape. Here in Moab, Utah, we had some serious rain for the first time. This was taken in Canyonlands NP, and is straight out of the camera, no fiddling with colors, contrasts, or lighting (and n help from Google!).

The amazing thing is that although one is so high up (here about 1700m) there are long stretches of flat areas where you can see the sky and land for many, many miles. And thus, see the rain you will shortly be passing through.

Hopefully today's rain is over now, so we can see more amazing areas before heading towards Denver.

May your day have sun as well as clouds, and tread lightly

Sheesh, he must be talking about a campaign we had
We had a campaign with similar numbers once.
We had sent a mailing (without a logo) with a code and url for the website, which was very good. Unfortunately, the analytics showed that once people got to page 6 - where our logo appeared for the first time - most people exited quickly.
I do believe that there was a message being sent.

Look what Google did
After a wonderful afternoon in he Minneapolis Institute of Art (posts to follow), yesterday was spent in the Sea Life Aquarium at the Mall of America.
Though walking in the tunnel underneath the sharks was interesting, it just did not provide the ultimate adrenaline kick. So we took a ride on the Sponge bob Rocket bottom plunge and got 4 seconds of sheer sensation (mostly terror 😊). It was fantastic!

Then Google kindly jazzed up my image and I actually like it. Maybe I should ask the Mia if they want it, as it would fit in perfectly with their current exhibition on international modernism.

Have a great day and tread lightly

If yes, what could be more fortuitous than this article about the (monetary) value of paintings.  If you have ever wondered about the unbelievable prices paid for paintings, and why some are "valued" more than others, look no further, the answers can be found in this informative and fun article.

I lived in Vienna for many years and always enjoy returning for visits. But still, the fact that we have been at the number one spot for 7th consecutive year is amazing.

Will have to look around with more awareness this afternoon ;-)

With David Bowie, a little piece of me died today
Major Tom, the Bewlay Brothers, Ziggy Stardust, and The Thin White Duke were songs, images and personas that probably shaped my teenage years more than any other cultural elements.

At 17, my best friend and I, until then only dressed in long bell bottom jeans with frayed hems and baggy shirts, got ourselves ready for the Bowie concert in Buffalo.  We scoured second hand shops and finally found two walking sticks (actually canes), bought silky satin and made slinky skirts <gasp!>, and put on our rabbit fur jackets (well, it was the late '70s), I believe we even had holders for the ubiquitous cigarettes.  And we got a ride down to the Buffalo Auditorium, had fairly good seats on the floor, .... and my life was never quite the same.

Whether you liked him or not, Bowie was a legend and an icon.  As a (fairly confused) teenager, he, probably more than any other, influenced my thinking about identity, my femininity, sexuality and a number of other things - and, yes, still left me a bit confused.

Then came the '80s, his music became more commercial, I got sucked up in "grown up life", career, marriage etc., and I was no longer such a passionate aficionado.

But the play lists kept being updated to first my tapes, then cds, then ipods and smart phones, always there for certain moods and when I felt the urge to recall those times of my youth, when so much seemed possible, options and choices were still available.

While I no longer really kept track of his doings, his passing leaves a hole that cannot be filled.  Maybe I want to cry for the pain that comes across in his last album Blackstar, or for the grief his family must be feeling, but probably also for that little bit of me that is now unrecoverable.

May he truly Rest in Peace, and may his family find comfort.

Happy Christmas!
wishing you all a wonderful Christmas, with peace, health and joy!

To help you start smiling, especially for those of you who may not follow Christian observance, check out these amazing works by Ed Wheeler.  Wheeler is a professional photographer who also loves (and knows) his art.
For this series, he has taken photos of himself in a Santa a costume, usually in the pose of one of the figures in the painting, and then transposed that figure into an image of the painting.  But he did so very delicately, ensuring that the lighting, colors, and textures were adapted to the painting, in order to get an optimal fit between original painting and inserted Santa.

Check out the website over the Holidays, you will find a few amusing surprises.

Driving with Mothers
After a road trip of close to 1000 miles (ca. 1600 Km) over 3 days with my mother, I stumbled onto this on +The Huffington Post .
To be fair, my mother did not do all of this, but there are absolutely similarities.
I even adhered to the speed limits, ... although, I must admit that the fact that the speedometer in her car, which as it turns out, shows between 10 and 20mph less than one is actually driving may also have been a factor ;-)
And .... btw: we did have a good time.

Please explain why it is ok for +Google Art Project to post this, but my collection "Culture and Art (history)" has been suspended for pornograpic content?

Is the occasional buttock or breast in a depiction by a renowned artist truly more objectionable than the multitude of half naked, butt waving, cleavage squeezing, pouting "beauties" we are bombarded with on a daily basis? But if my collection has now been suspended because of the occasional post showing a painting of Rubens with a nude woman, or a sketch of a man's nude back, then I worry about the direction this platform ia taking.

I share the view that D.H. Lawrence had of pornography: not the image of the human body and it's functions, or even an honest accounting of a meeting of lovers is pornographic. Pornography is anything that let's our bodies and their functions, whether that is eating, evacuation, or sex, seem to be a "dirty little secret", things that scratch the itch, purport to uphold our principles of prudeness, while at the same time salaciously suggesting quite the opposite.

The policy which allows pouting, half open mouths above bursting cleavage, while rejecting true icons of art history, actually supports pornographic images and thus helps perpetuate this sad state.

I'm happy to make Lawrence's essay on pornography available to anyone interested and look forward to a constructive debate.

A beautiful reminder of Savoy
Joseph Mallord Wiliam Turner - just letting his name roll off the tongue is a pleasure, is one of my favorite Romantic painters. A trained watercolorist, he is probably best known for his later works, which almost approach abstraction.

But here, in the view of Bonneville, Savoy is more than adequate proof that Turner was master not only of emotions, but also of all the technical details that make a great painting.  And, oh yes, from my trips through Savoy I can confirm that it really does look like this, even 100 years later.

Find peace and joy in the landscape today, even if only in this wonderful painting, and tread lightly

Bros on horseback, oh my!
The region in which I live sports a number of wonderful, curvy, mountainous roads that are beloved by motorcyclists. Having been what we call a 'motorbike-bride' for most of my life, I understand the pull of these roads completely.

Seeing the bikers, in their helmets and dress has often reminded me of the knights of old. Both are not recognizable in their uniforms, are on very powerful, often destructive, forms of transportation, and have a bit of 'bad boy' aura.

So imagine my delight at finding this article, which is not only a quick read, but also quotes one of my all-time favorite authors: Mark Twain:
"You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus"
which is so stunningly true not just about history.

Ever had a "misophonia-related rage blackout"?
I have them all the time. What a relief it is to find out that it's not just intolerance, but a valid disorder, for which I must take no blame ;-)

I got myself into trouble here with some quotes .....
I re-shared a post with some quotes, the attributions of which were probably not quite correct, and was reprimanded in the comments.
Because that was such a success, I found some (fictitious!!!) quotes by artists about their works at +Hyperallergic  here: http://goo.gl/o0QNSb, and had to share this one.
Bonus points to anyone who can describe what this actually means!

Have fun and tread lightly (especially in the comments)

my favorite sentence is right at the bottom:
"Telling the truth may be working for Bernie Sanders, but it shows a serious lack of respect for the American political system,"

The irony of Napoleon's quote is amazing
Edit: I'm clear on the fact that the attributions may not be correct, which doesn't really matter to me, what I like are the ideas and the way they are articulated.

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art:
Last night we had a truly wonderful display of the Perseis meteor showers. Because these showers usually occur around August 10th, which is the Name-day of St. Laurentius, the showers are often referred to as the "Tears of Laurentius".  St. Laurentius was treasurer for the Church of Rome in the 3rd century, under Pope Sixtus II and in the reign of the Emperor Valerian.  In 257, Valerian began a wave of persecution against Christians, including the beheading of Sixtus II.

It is still not really clear whether Valerian acted thusly from purely religious motivation - he did believe that it was important to keep up worship of the old Gods.

However, financial reasons probably played a role as well. It is said that after the death of Sixtus II, Valerian ordered Laurentius to hand over the treasure of the Church of Rome. Laurentius instead distributed the treasure among the populace and then gathered the poor, sick and needy, which he presented as the 'true treasure of the Church'.

Valerian was having none of it and had Laurentius roasted alive on an iron grill on August 10 in 258. Thus the connection to fiery showers and the 'tears of Laurentius'.

The showers and the story reminded me of this image, called Representation of Strange Occurrences seen in connection with two comets in 1456 in an illuminated manuscript called the Lucerne Chronicle by Diebold Schilling.  The image is a combination of gore and (to us) humor, and, seen in our day, is rather whimsical and quaint.

Have some whimsy in your day, and tread lightly

While the floral wreath at the bottom of the work reminds me of some of the works of Rachel Ruysch, one of the premier female artists of the 17th century, a closer look shows that LeMay's work is actually not realistic at all.

Neither is it a painting, but an amazing piece of digital art.  Ysabel LeMay works with photography and digital editing, often working with images cropped from many, many photos, and re-assembles these into truly fascinating works. All of her works have elements of nature in them, some more obviously surreal and 'made up' than others. But even her most life-like, floral compositions never descend into the mundane or trivial sentimentality.

In sum, they are a joy to behold and a challenge for the brain as well.

Let your own brain be challenged today and do, tread lightly

Happy Birthday to HH the Dalai Lama
This extraordinary man has been both hero and role model to me for many years now. That he can still talk about compassion, when he knows exactly how the people of Tibet are made to suffer under Chinese occupation, is simply humbling.
I was blessed to see him in Vienna a number of years ago, and, though I was in a cheap seat far from the stage, his personality filled the hall pervasively.
May he live many, many more years.
May his spirit of joy and compassion touch many more people.
and ... may the Tibetan people soon be free of occupation and suppression.

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, Animated: History’s Greatest Parable Exploring the Nature of Reality | Brain Pickings

'...“Reality,” wrote Philip K. Dick, “is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.” And yet how are we to be sure that what we observe actually is? After all, so much of what we experience as reality is the product of our remarkably flawed perception.

Some 2,400 years earlier, Plato explored this very question in his famous Allegory of the Cave — perhaps history’s most masterful figurative inquiry into the meaning of life and the nature of reality — found in Book VII of his Republic (free download; public library).

Indeed.  You can skip to the last paragraph, it says all there is to say:
"If your job is to serve your community — every member of it — then that’s what you do. You can’t as a firefighter decide you’re not going to put out a blaze in an atheist’s home. You can’t as a postal worker decide you’re not going to deliver mail to a transgender person’s apartment. And you should not be permitted, as a county clerk, to decide your private feelings overrule your official duties. Your obligations are spelled out in your job description. They include issuing marriage licenses. If that’s a problem, then I guess it’s time to look for another job, huh?"
