American Museum of Natural History238,694There are about a million near-Earth asteroids that are large enough to substantially damage or destroy a major city. With current space technology, scientists know how to deflect the majority of hazardous near-Earth objects. But prevention is only possible if nations work together on detection and deflection.Learn about the risks and the steps that are needed to avoid these potential natural disasters from a group of astronauts and cosmonauts who recently helped develop recommendations to the United Nations for defending Earth from asteroid impact. Neil deGrasse Tyson hosts the discussion, which will be streamed live at amnh.org/live beginning at 11 am EST on October 25. Watch here: http://bit.ly/15XV1npThe discussion takes place the same week the United Nations General Assembly adopts measures creating an international decision-making mechanism for planetary asteroid defense.Participants include:Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. NASA1,716,910NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk will discuss the first contracted cargo resupply flight to the International Space Station during a Google+ Hangout from 1-1:30 p.m. EDT Friday, Oct. 5. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo spacecraft are scheduled to lift off at 8:35 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7 from at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Bolden and Musk will talk about the flight, which will be the first of 12 contracted for NASA by SpaceX to resupply the space station. The SpaceX flights under the Commercial Resupply Services contract will restore an American capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to the orbiting laboratory -- a feat not achievable since the retirement of the space shuttle. Followers on Twitter may ask a question in advance of or during the event using the hashtag #askNASA . On Google+, leave a comment in the thread on this event page with questions marked with #askNASA  on the morning of the event. To join the hangout, visit the NASA's Google+ page at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday, Oct. 5:  http://plus.google.com/+NASAThe Dragon will be filled with about 1,000 pounds of supplies. Hubble Space Telescope3,837,668A new, improved portrait of Hubble’s deepest-ever view of the universe, called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, looks far away and back in time to reveal faint galaxies at one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see.  This is the culmination of 10 years of observing a patch of sky that contains thousands of far-flung galaxies. The full-color XDF image shows previously unseen galaxies as they looked in the early universe, billions of years ago.Astronomers continue studying this area of sky with Hubble. Extensive ongoing observing programs, led by Harry Teplitz and Richard Ellis at the California Institute of Technology, will allow astronomers to study the deep-field galaxies with Hubble to even greater depths in ultraviolet and infrared light prior to the launch of JWST. These new results will provide even more extraordinary views of this region of the sky and will be shared with the public in the coming months.                              Want to know more? You can participate in an online webinar and hear three key astronomers of the XDF observing team describe how they assembled the landmark observation. They will illustrate and explain what Hubble’s powerful new view tells us about the evolving universe. Viewers can send in questions for our panel of experts to discuss. The webinar will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Thursday Sept 27. Join us here for this Google Event, or watch and leave questions at the HubbleSite YouTube Channel. (http://www.youtube.com/hubblesitechannel). You can also ask your questions in advance here in comments, and we'll pass them on to our panel. The panelists will be:Garth Illingworth, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.He is the principal investigator of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2009 (HUDF09) Project. Pascal Oesch, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project. Dan Magee, programmer/data analyst at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Fraser Cain824,747Super Science Circle for October, 2013I know it's been a while, so it's time for a new Super Science Circle - the October 2013 edition. In case you weren't aware, the Super Science Circle is a list of more than 400 people who are actively engaged on Google+ and regularly post about science and education. We've got journalists, scientists, even a few astronauts. The Super Science Circle should be your best response to anyone who tells you that Google+ is just a ghost town. If you love science, this circle will deliver the goods. If you know anyone who actively posts about science, please let me know and I'll add them to the list.2013-10-04 20:14:53415304682

Fraser Cain798,034Super Science Circle, July 2013 EditionNeed more science in your streams? Want to convince a friend that Google+ is a thriving place of science and rational thinking? Then import my Super Science Circle and be amazed at the awesomeness.PLEASE RESHARE THIS CIRCLE... FOR SCIENCE!Every single person in this circle is active on Google+ and regularly contributes high quality posts about science. You've got my personal guarantee. As always, I recommend you import this group into a temporary circle and look for people who match your interests. Then pull them over into more permanent locations in your circles. Or just wait for me to give you an update next month. If you want to be included in this circle, just make a post in the comments and I'll check out your profile.I'm looking for people who:1. Are active on Google+ (but not too active)2. Regularly post about science3. Provide context and additional information, and not just bare links or annoying memes.2013-07-16 18:35:56415255987

Fraser Cain779,548Super Science Circle - May 2013 EditionNeed more science in your Google+? Well, here's all the science you can handle! Enjoy my latest, heavily curated edition of the Super Science Circle. Please share this circle... for Science! For the uninitiated, I maintain a circle of 450+ people who are active on Google+ and regularly post on Google+. In this circle you'll find scientists, journalists, astronauts, educators, and science enthusiasts. By importing this circle into your own circles, you'll immediately gain a vibrant and fascinating feed of amazing science stories.I recognize that it might be too much science, so I suggest you create a brand new temporary circle and evaluate the people in the circle. Only transfer the keepers to your permanent circles. Then, when I update the circle next month, rinse and repeat. Are you active on G+ and regularly post about science? +mention me and I'll check out your profile.Remember, please share this post2013-05-22 19:26:51456348088

They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to May 15th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting Msy 1st.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday #handpickedcircles   #sharedcircles #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle2013-05-16 10:35:53175604
Richard Green12,571Here's an updated circle of people who have either +1ed, reshared, or commented on one of my posts recently.  This includes indirect public reshares, but only +1s and comments on the original posts.Since the circle is nearly full, I only included new people if they engaged with one of my non-circle-share posts.  Also, I excluded posts with over 100 +1s, for two reasons:(a) hot posts attract low-quality comments, including spam comments, and(b) as far as I can tell, Google won't give you a full list of people who plus-oned your post if there are more than 100 of them; the same goes for reshares. Thanks for reading my posts!2013-05-13 21:33:26483712686

Fraser Cain770,050Super Science Circle - April 2013 EditionIt's time for another sharing of my Super Science Circle. This is a collection of 400+ active people on Google+ who often post about science. If anyone tells you G+ is a ghost town (not that anyone does any more), get them to import this circle. PLEASE SHARE THIS CIRCLE... FOR SCIENCE!I have personally reviewed each and every person on this list, to make sure that they:1. Are active and engaged on Google+2. Regularly post science-related stories on Google+In this list you'll find scientists, journalists, researchers, professors, astronauts and general science enthusiasts. Not everyone in this list is going to be to your personal liking. So what you'll want to do is import the list into a temporary circle. Then move people over one by one into more permanent locations in your circles.I'm always looking for more people to add to the list, so if you know people who meet my criteria, feel free to nominate them.Again, please share the circle. Every little bit helps2013-04-26 21:02:03419226277
Richard Green10,142Yes: I've made it to 10,000 followers!  To celebrate, here's a once-only share of a circle I'm calling the Surprisingly Successful Mashup Circle.  It contains:1. the most recent share of my Thankers circle (people who thank other people for including them in a circle that happens to contain me as well);2. the most recent share of my Engagers circle (people who +1, reshare and comment on my posts);3. my Plus Ten circle, which was a great idea that didn't work (people who post things with more than 10 plus-ones);4. the people and pages mentioned below.I'd like to thank the following:+Science on Google+: A Public Database for giving me most of my first 1,200 followers;+Full Circle, +JUSTIN MATTHEW, +Cesare Riccardo, +Trever McGhee, +Ludovic Moreeuw and +Euro Maestro for repeatedly sharing me in their high-impact circles; and+Shaker Cherukuri for implanting the idea in my head, inception-style, that having 10,000 followers would somehow be a cool idea.  (I think there should be a verb "inceive", meaning "to put an idea into someone's head, like in the film Inception.")Caution: having lots of followers doesn't mean that people will read your posts.  But it certainly helps! And here's the circle.2013-04-25 00:39:34498853693

"  "When a local government’s very existence depends on its citizens breaking the law — when fines from ordinance violations are written into city budgets for the upcoming year as a primary or even the main expected source of revenue — the relationship between the government and the governed is not one of public officials serving their constituents, but of preying off of them. When the primary mission of a police department isn’t to protect citizens but to extract money from them, and when the cops themselves don’t look like, live near or have much in common with the people from whom they’re extracting that money, you get cops who start to see the people they’re supposed to be serving not as citizens with rights, but as potential sources of revenue, as lawbreakers to be caught. The residents of these towns then see cops not as public servants drawn from their own community toenforce the la... more »

NANOSCIENCE – Run electrons through a magnetic field and you can paint a picture on an old-style television screen or etch a chip with a billion transistors. Shine a light through the same beam and nothing happens – at least until now.

Researchers at Kavli Institute at Cornell have demonstrated that they can change light properties with a field that is “equivalent to a magnetic field.” The technique is compatible with conventional semiconductor manufacturing, and could enable them to manipulate light in high-speed optical computer circuits.

The work was led by Kavli member and 2010 MacArthur Fellow Michal Lipson and graduate student Lawrence Tzuang. It appeared in a recent issue of Nature Photonics. (Read more at http://bit.ly/ZCOBu2.)

Ordinarily, light’s phase – the timing of the wavelength’s high and low points – remains unchanged. What Lipson’s team did was send the light between two modulators, which imprint a new phase on light by using an equivalent magnetic field to change their path.

This can “break symmetry between forward and backward propagating light” Lipson explained.

This creates an optical isolator: “If light is propagating in one direction, it will be transmitted. If it is propagating in the other, it will not. This is very important for applications, such as on-chip optical networks for data processing, for example,” she said.

An array of such modulators could push photons into potentially useful quantum states or create unique behaviors, Tzuang added.

“The more interesting thing is that these are all achieved by simply changing the phases of the modulators” using conventional electronics, he noted.

There are other ways to do the same thing, such as nonlinear optical materials and metamaterials, synthetic structures that can alter a material’s optoelectronic properties. These, however, are often hard to build on silicon, which reigns supreme in information processing.

Lipson’s approach uses materials and fabrication processes that are fully compatible with existing semiconductor technology. ___

It's here! It's here!
My new +Tamron 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD finally arrived.
I'm lovin' it after just having it an hour or so while taking the shots below as a quick test out. I had a Canon SX-40 Bridge camera before and loved the convenience of the super zoom so this lens scratches that same itch. It's fairly small and light and gives that almost 19:1 zoom ratio that focus' down to 15.4" (39 cm) at all focal lengths.
Combined with the snappy focus of the Sony A77MII I'm a very happy guy.

The photo part is bad enough but finding the five "friends" you want to involve in a photo chain letter is harder. I shall resort to acquaintances and eventually strangers who were kind enough to comment on one of my photos or who are into monochrome.

Airside Tour of Toronto Pearson YYZ
from Robert Jones
The Stakeholder Relations and Communications Department of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority invited me for a 90-minute airside tour of Toronto Pearson airport. It was raining when I got there in the morning, but once the tour started I realized I could put the rain to work for me. The resulting reflections and spray meant I got shots that I never would have been able to get otherwise. It was an incredibly fun and enjoyable tour! This time-lapse was shot using a GoPro Hero3+ Silver Edition, stuck to the hood of the car using the standard GoPro suction mount. More than 5400 individual photos, one per second, are packed into this three-minute time-lapse. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The truth shall set you free.
Big Brother is watching.

Two different approaches to the same thing. If one is in public or in a public place ( elevator in a Casino or hotel ) assume you are on Video.Attack on privacy? That horse left the barn long ago.
Pro tip Don't hit your fiance, kick your dog or abuse your police power and things will go better.

The Isis videos are a different issue it seems to me.

I'm quite blown away by the wide variety of photographers tapped by the challenge from all over the globe, amateur, pro-am and pros. I've started to follow a bunch of y'all in my B&W5daychallenge circle.

This is day 3 of the #blackandwhitefivedaychallenge . Thanks to +Joseph Naccarato for inviting me to the challenge.
You have to post a b&w image each day for five days and tag an acquaintance, friend stranger as well. These can be new or previously made images.
Today I'm challenging +Vincent Brillant to take part in this challenge. Participate if you can, no obligation.

This one was taken on the day of the Fall Toronto Photo Walk after I left the group from the daytime session.

" That’s pretty much the service Mr. Mansbridge performed on Wednesday during the terrible shooting in Ottawa. He performed it for the nation on CBC television, of course, but it was noticed around the world, where it was written up by several media outlets in a tone of wonder generally used only when describing a Canadian who has done something on figure skates.
