We have always believed that it's important to differentiate between different types of government requests. We already publish criminal requests separately from National Security Letters: http://goo.gl/OCFck Lumping the two categories together would be a step back for users. Our request to the government is clear: to be able to publish aggregate numbers of national security requests, including FISA disclosures, separately.

For the past few days, I’ve been in New Zealand, watching the folks at Google [x] as they test out their scheme for Internet connection via thousands of high-pressure, solar powered balloons circling the globe in the stratosphere.   The initiative is called Project Loon, partly because it’s crazy.   But Google is serious about making this happen.   Read my dispatch from Kiwi-land here.

Beschreibung des Project Loon:

Wir halten einen Ring von Ballons für möglich, die, von stratosphärischen Winden vorwärts getrieben, den Erdball umrunden und den Menschen auf der Erde eine Verbindung zum Internet ermöglichen. Wir befinden uns noch ziemlich am Anfang, haben jedoch bereits ein System gebaut, das auf Ballons basiert. Sie werden in doppelter Flughöhe kommerzieller Transportflugzeuge vom Wind angetrieben und eine Internetverbindung mit der Erde herstellen, deren Bandbreite mindestens der von 3G-Netzwerken entspricht. Wir hoffen, dass diese Ballons künftig eine Option sein könnten, um ländliche, abgelegene und schlecht abgedeckte Landstriche zu versorgen oder nach Naturkatastrophen die Kommunikation sicherzustellen. Die Idee mag ein wenig verrückt erscheinen – ein Grund für die Bezeichnung Project Loon –, sie beruht jedoch auf einer soliden wissenschaftlichenGrundlage.

One thing that makes Glass awesome is that you can just long press on the touchpad any time and speak to ask Google a question. It’s a super fast way to search which, it turns out, is pretty magical.

+Amanda Rosenberg and I decided to test out a bunch of cool searches and thought you guys would like 'em too - check it out.

Es ist dem US-Illustrator und Kinderbuchautor Maurice Sendak gewidmet, der heute 85 Jahre alt geworden waere. In Deutschland ist der 2012 verstorbene Sendak vor allem durch die Verfilmung seines grossartigen Kinderbuches "Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen" bekannt geworden.

Das interaktive Doodle solltet Ihr Euch auf jeden Fall anschauen. Es lohnt sich  :-)

Kollegen von mir organisieren unabhängig von Google ein Event namens Techbikers (http://www.techbikers.de/), einen Networking Bike Ride von Prag nach Berlin für die Start-Up Szene. 

Die Idee: 40 Leute mit "entrepreneurial spirit" fahren an drei Tagen mit dem Rad von einer Startup-Metropole in die nächste.
Ziel ist es, neben viel Spaß und Networking, Spenden für eine non-profit Organisation zu sammeln (in diesem Jahr dotHIV : dotHIV -- The Red Ribbon of the digital age). Das Ganze fand 2012 zum ersten Mal statt, von Paris nach London (hier ein Video:TechBikers 2012 und Techcrunch-Artikel : http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/21/techbikers-cycle-from-paris-to-london-to-give-2000-kids-a-better-future/)

Gmail's new inbox now available on Android, iPhone and iPad

Last week we announced that Gmail has a new inbox that puts you back in control using simple, easy organization.  New versions of the Gmail for Android and Gmail for iPhone and iPad apps with the new inbox are now available. 

If you'd like to try out the new inbox on your mobile device, click on the gear menu in Gmail on the desktop and select Configure inbox. The next time you use your mobile device, primary mail will be shown first and notifications will only appear for primary mail. It's easy to access and keep track of email in other categories by opening the menu.

Eine neue Umfrage von Burst Medie (Ergebnisse als PDF: http://www.burstmedia.com/pdf/burst_media_online_insights_2013_04.pdf) zeigt, dass G+ weiter auf dem Vormarsch ist und mittlerweile mehr registrierte Nutzer hat als Twitter. Das sagt zwar nichts über die Aktivität aus, ist aber ein interessantes Ergebnis :-)

Habt Ihr schon Racer gespielt?

Racer ist ein mobiles Chrome Experiment, das wir erstmals auf der Google I/O vorgestellt haben. Macht irre Spaß.
Um es zu spielen müsst ihr lediglich g.co/racer in den mobilen Chrome Browser eingeben. Ihr könnt mit mehreren Freunden oder Kollegen gleichzeitig spielen.

Mein Tipp: Unbedingt ausprobieren  :-)

Glass and Facial Recognition

When we started the Explorer Program nearly a year ago our goal was simple: we wanted to make people active participants in shaping the future of this technology ahead of a broader consumer launch.  We've been listening closely to you, and many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass. As Google has said for several years, we won’t add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place. With that in mind, we won’t be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time.

We’ve learned a lot from you in just a few weeks and we’ll continue to learn more as we update the software and evolve our policies in the weeks and months ahead.
