Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych442,129It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00161

I wish...
that some Americans would learn that Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, North Korea and similar do not come highly recommended on TripAdvisor.com. If you happen to be that stupid American that packs a bible and sunscreen heading for the sunny shores of blow your head off and someone asks your name, I highly suggest you say, "أنا لا أتكلم الإنجليزية" or "내가 영어 를 못하는" or similar. Trust me on this one.

So
I've lost many friends online and IRL due to my opinions and recent posts on Israel and Gaza; one sending me a message that they are disappointed in me, many trying to change my point of view or calling me anti-Semitic or generally spewing a host of tu quoque or other ballsack fallacies. Whatever, so is life. My last words on this, at least online, for prosperity:

1. I'm against the killing of innocent children. This does not make me an anti-Semite. To accuse any critic of Israeli policy as anti-Semitic, is to trivialize the holocaust and is an insult to the genuine suffering of the Jewish people.

2. Fighting a principled war is one thing, but targeting non combatants in that war is a war crime and awfully close to the definition of terrorism.

3. Jingoism is just as dangerous as any brand of fundamentalism. This applies to both sides.

4. I... more »

What's new with me?
Fuck you Google Pus, that's what's new. What's also new is that I actively despise this software and UI. I tried five fucking times to post a stupid tiny image with two lines of text, five!, every time I click the 'add image' button, my entire phone freezes. Not just the G+ app, the whole freaking phone just freezes and fades to black before my phone probably thinks "fuck you too G+" and eventually comes back to Apple life. And fuck you for the stupid "what's new with you?" prompt like we're a bunch of recalcitrant tweens that have to be guided to have a thought.

I can't believe I actually logged back in just to post this instead of throwing this phone against the wall because of you. I normally roll my eyes at people who can't handle change and complain about beta, but this is not beta. What the fuck are... more »

Do any of you actually use your own software and do any of you use non Android devices in order to form an unbiased opinion?

Phew. Now that I've taken a much needed deep arse breath and realized that I've just anthropomorphized a company's social media platform, I just want to say, it's because of you we can't have nice things. Do you even KISS? It's not that hard.

Okay I'm still doing it, I just really hate when I'm paying for a service via all my anonymized data that Google uses to include me as a target demographic for Advertisers, and I'm just not getting said service.

A moment of zen if anyone from Google actually cares to listen...
Listen to and communicate with your human Users like your job depends on it.

If you're sick of hearing people complain about G+ and the changes then yeah it's too bad you've read this far. It is what it is. Wherever you go there you are etc etc.

Confirmation Bias Is A Terrible Thing
It's scary how many legitimate news outlets regurgitated this spurious story without researching it, and how many people actually believed it (and still do). Perhaps all Carson's facts do not line up, but with some research, the gist of it does. This is why I'm a staunch believer in bearing "falsifiability" in mind when critically reading absolutely anything. I'm also a fan of the Thesis/Antithesis/Synthesis triad in writing pedagogy and believe it should be applied to journalism. It's not that hard.

In other words, journalists, stop being so fucking lazy.

*Just to be clear: I can't stand Carson.

I don't get some people
Some of my friends specifically. Why do they complain about their emotionally and/or physically abusive boyfriends/husbands/fuck toys, yet they keep taking them back? It's very much like this brick wall they keep banging their heads against, hoping it will somehow magically transform into Platform 9 3/4.

What irks me more, is that I've been one of those women, where for no blinking reason and sans reason, deceptive emotion trumps logic.

It's not that any of these women aren't smart, have low EQ or in some cases lack self esteem; It's just...I don't know. Love? What a deceptive beast.

So low key vexatious, right?

Change my mind
I'm pretty sure everyone's already heard the news that Lamar Odom needs a kidney transplant following a drug, herbal viagra and sex overdose. Of course it's illegal to buy a kidney in the US, but I'm certain he'll find a willing donor among his or Khloe Kardashian's legion of fans (which I am not, so needless to say it won't be my kidney).

But, in everything I've ever read on this and peripheral topics, I have yet to come across a good enough reason why you shouldn't be able to sell a kidney when you can donate one anonymously or not.

If you have the most rational answer, please enlighten me.

Reward will be my kidney should you ever need one. I'm blood type Oh Positive. Many, many terms and conditions apply.

This is such a lie.
I'm supposed to have a 20Mb line (sad I know). There should be a "feels like" meter. Even with local websites they take forever to load on my mobile connecting via Wireless to an Apple AirPort Extreme wired to the old Netgear router. Update: After disabling WMM on my old router, the speed suddenly feels a lot faster even if it only shows a meg difference on the speed test. Progress. Next steps: Buy a new router and optimize the configuration like a boss.

Has appending any 'abled' word with '-challenged' turned some of us into habitually offended violas aka whiny pansies? Should every description become so neutral that it eventually becomes indistinguishable? Is that our ultimate goal? To be equally labelled human beings period? Is the slippery slope in this Disney trope really all that slippery? With the exception of blatant hate speech, can Political Correctness be likened to Newspeak?

No response required, I'm just thinking out loud.

"The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of understanding."

If you're genuinely interested in philosophy or simply being human, I'd encourage you to take the time to read this essay by +Peter Strempel. It's a long read, but it it will give you a feast for thought. Not for the faint-hearted. Not for lulz. And nary a stupid cat in sight.

Luminous realm of values
Christopher Hitchens used to tell a story.  A good natured but stupid 'nature' class teacher, Mrs Jean Watts, had one day ventured to explain that grass and leaves were green as god's gift to mankind.  He paraphrased her: 'This is an excellent thing and proof of the glory of god, because he could have made vegetation orange or red, something that would clash with our eyes, whereas green is the most restful colour for our eyes!'  Nine-year-old Hitchens concluded: 'That's bullshit!'  Bang.  Done.  The Eureka moment from which he extrapolated all the other idiocies that flow from humans presuming to speak for god.

For me the matter was less certain and more complex, but no less fundamental.  And it applies much more widely than just to matters of religious authority proper.  The purview is all human reasoning.

Let's take a detour via Jean Paul Sartre's 1946 lecture, 'Existentialism and Humanism', which some have argued should have been translated as 'Existentialism is a Humanism'.  The distinction is not as inconsequential as it may seem.  The translation of this lecture from the French by Philip Mairet contains the sentence: 'Thus we have neither behind us, nor before us in a luminous realm of values, any means of justification or excuse.'  A sentence that, when considered carefully, is not just profound, but one of the most elegant literary renditions of any idea in the modern era.  In fact, it was such a perfect phrasing that I wondered whether there had been a mistranslation of 'numinous' for 'luminous'.  I had to check various sources, but in those I can lay my hands on it is at least a universal mistake, if it is a mistake at all.

What would be the difference in meaning?  The sentence with 'luminous' is elegant and borders on the brilliant.  It evokes the visual of a brightly illuminated, and illuminating, path of values that is in fact a fantasy across literary, ethical, and æsthetic dimensions.  Is there any confusion about Sartre's meaning?  Not to me, but I suspect that a large and growing number of people will have trouble with this because it has no literal interpretation that makes sense.  You have to be able to think in abstract and unfixed meanings across multiple topics, stretching from history to philosophy, and from politics to religion.  It is not at all amenable to a reductionist determinism that seeks to pin down an inherent and atomically reducible, precise meaning contained in the words.  As if the words could stand alone and apart from intention and audience.

For fundamentalist audiences, however, the word 'numinous' would be more fortunate because it restricts meaning to theologically defined values.  That meaning would be more limited than any intention one might derive from 'luminous', which can attach to any paradigm being proposed as a bright and shining example that illuminates human thinking on ethics and moral action.  How one can explain this profound difference to the intellectually stunted people who cannot think figuratively is not a problem I can address, let alone resolve.  However, it does mean that such people will never understand fully what it is to be human, and to be humanist.  That demographic includes a surprisingly large cohort of nominally educated people who would shrink away from considering themselves the fundamentalist literalists they are.

This is not a game of semantics.  The different meanings being considered are important in understanding Sartre's description of mankind, which he argues is forlorn, as if abandoned by a higher authority, and therefore without choice about reaching judgements and making decisions for which it must accept absolute responsibility.  Translate that to individuals: every grown human is individually responsible for its decisions and actions.  No excuses, no absolutions, and no choice.  No fence-sitting either.  Even inaction is a decision.

That was my childhood realisation.  It wasn't a single event or realisation, like that of Hitchens's 'bullshit' moment, but a progressive, growing awareness of the unreliability of authority figures to act in a manner deserving of emulation or respect.  I watched, as a child, the ritual humiliation of other children, sometimes also my own, and wondered why it was necessary to cruelly and sadistically pursue such powerless agents over many quite petty matters, apparently just to make them cry or watch the mounting terror widen their eyes and turn their faces pale.  It is a refined sort of bastardry that seems particularly ingrained in Protestant conceptions of righteousness, but has spread into all sorts of other authority domains.  Orwell talked about it spellbindingly in a recollection of his schooldays, 'Such, such were the joys'.

As a powerless child I was unable to deliver a clip around the ear for the adults who were thus abusing children; that came only years later.  So I was left to consider how I would have acted, in each instance, to attain reasonable outcomes sans tears or trauma.  I was moved, in my own head, to also come up with the justifications for why my methods were better, imagining how I would argue my causes with the grown-ups.

I have not ever found anything like an illuminated path, or any particularly brilliant insights into any system or formula from which humanist values can be derived.  I am tempted to conclude that such a simple-minded approach is precisely what we call religion, ecclesiastical and secular.  It has always been hard work to consider each event that requires ethical judgement as separate from any other, and to analyse every dynamic of the specific context individually.  Every time.  That is what I think is ethics and moral action: intellectual effort, not deference to predetermined. fixed rules.  Deference is the opposite of ethics.  It is reliance on a codex, or algorithm, to reduce all complexity to meaninglessness, and to apply a predetermined judgement, like a wrecking ball, regardless of its moral character or consequences.

Looking again at the Sartrean luminous realm of values, it becomes possible to see the vast bulk of reductionist determinists banishing humanism with the darkness of a kind of anti-ethics that is the unthinking reliance on uncritically adopted, and therefore infinitely corrupt rules.  In that darkness we find the specks of light that are people who actually do think, and who do make an effort to analyse, form judgements, and act on them.  They become, in that conception, the specks of starlight that prevent an otherwise dark universe from being completely black and void.___"The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of understanding."

In Pursuit Of The Peach
This is the pixel perfect metaphor for life as I know it. Smashing through brick walls or glass ceilings, growing up too fast, knowing when to say no to magic mushrooms, collecting cash only to watch it disappear then reappear, stomping on goombas, reaching the flag, sliding back to reality, defeating the dragons; Always finding that the goal is in another castle. Until finally you reach that frisky peach. Yet, still you choose to do it all over again.

All the fun is in the pursuit. Or something.

Happy Friday.

I did this for the first time this morning. Oh my god I'm still tired. Who tortures themselves like this, willingly? This is why I much prefer a sedentary lifestyle, but alas, with age things just go all wobbly of their own accord. Not that I'd want to look this muscled. I prefer gently toned to juiced and stoned.

As a pre-pre-teen, I did boobies. It was the whole elbow thrust maneuver whilst chanting "I must, I must, I must increase my bust." Those who've read Judy Blume will understand the reference.

As a pro-pro-teen, I'm now doing burpees. Fuck my life.

'Serendipity' was my favorite word as a kid. I loved the sound of it, and the way your mouth moves when you say it. It was a loved word that I always thought should be used to define the feeling of popping bubble wrap, rather than what it actually means. Though it could be relevant in certain circumstances...

Can someone with teenaged daughters (or sons) please explain One Direction's appeal? I've stood on my head and squinted, and even listened to their new number one song 'Drag Me Down', also ew, but I just don't see it. I thought maybe it's because I'm too old, but I find Zayn quite doable so it's not that. Have standards of sex godness dropped or is it just me?

Why was the circle sharing relegated to the G+raveyard? Does anyone know? I met 90% of the best people in the world through those shares. What a pity.

Also, it's a great day when TELETUBBIES 2 adds you to their circles. So much better than 1. Just think of the possibilities.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

A couple of years ago, I took a really strong sleeping pill. The thing is you’re actually supposed to go to bed. I didn’t, which totally fucked with my mind to the point that I was outside of myself. This led to me sending the craziest G+ messages to someone I was flirting with.

At that point, we were at the ‘just friends’ stage. He knew he wasn’t in the friend zone, but he didn’t know I wanted to put him in the V zone and then some. By some miracle I realized what I was doing, and he hadn’t yet read the messages so I deleted it.

I went to bed and four hours later I jumped up in a panic remembering the messages, but not sure whether I deleted them or dreamt that I deleted them. Fortunately I did. And he never knew. Or he did and just pretended not to. Either way, I was never as grateful for the delete button as I was then.

Then there are the ones where I was on the receiving end.  I’d read something someone sent on G+ in an email notification with text included, or the person’s email recall failed. The person would think I hadn’t read it and I’d pretend I didn’t just to save them the embarrassment, but I still suffered from secondary shame...I could always tell they were sussing me out to see whether I’d read it or not, which made me feel worse. But in the bigger scheme of things their primary shame was probably worse than mine.

The new Gmail Email Undo Send option must be a god send to the impulsive types. Now if only they’d come up with an undo button for the mouth.___

On The N-Word, Stars And Bars
So the POTUS used a painful racial slur to illustrate a point. Some think it should never be used, ever again; That it be relegated to the same museum as the Confederate flag. I’m not sure some of the offended realize that any taboo word can be used objectively, with the literary, artistic or rhetorical intent to bolster an opinion.

In my country, the word “kaffir” holds just as much racial offense as “nigger”, with just as much pain and power as a slur or obscenity. But, I can use it in the context of this paragraph and not have the entire African continent baying for my blood.

‘Kaffir’ is an Arabic word meaning ‘non-believer', with etymological roots in the Arabic owned African slave trade. As a person of mixed race with actual Malay-African slaves as ancestors, I’m not offended by anyone’s use of it.

Provided it’s used objectively, and not stuck on a freaking pole, waving willy nilly in the Southern cross wind, serving not a noble intent, but an egregious one symbolic of subjugation, racial segregation, murder and slavery.

Yet, even if I was a hood loving white supremacist piece of shit - freedom of speech would allow me to say  ‘all day nigger’ and fly a version of the Confederate Battle flag outside my home. But, there’d be nothing objective nor well-intentioned about it.

This doesn’t mean I don’t have the right to do it, but common sense, decency and a thorough history lesson would tell me I’d probably be better at humaning if I didn’t. I shouldn’t, because it’s just downright mean.

There’s no dissonance in these views. Intent, context, motivation, it makes all the difference.

The full poem by Erin Hanson gets my gooses all pimply. Takes me back to my childhood for some reason. Perhaps it's reminiscent of e.e. cummings, one of my favourite romantic poets (besides the insensitive poem he wrote where he speaks of a nigger holding a star in his hand; He claimed it was shining a spotlight on prejudice, but I'm sure there were better ways to do that.)

that some Americans would learn that Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, North Korea and similar do not come highly recommended on TripAdvisor.com.

I’m officially a horrible person - I actually looked at the nudes of some of the hacked celebrities.
Honestly, they have nothing to be ashamed of. Their photographs are a glowing private glorification of their beautiful bodies, their sexuality and their selfie lives in general. But still. As much as I feel they should shake off the shackles of cultural and societal norms associated with body and sexuality shaming, I am appalled that their privacy was invaded in such a despicable way. Those who blame them for taking nudes of themselves in the first place, should ask themselves whether they approve or disapprove of the NSA’s flagrant invasion of privacy. The bullshit fallacy “nothing to hide, nothing to fear” or “don’t take nudes on your cellphone then play victim when your privacy is invaded” does not apply. On Love and Depression
When I glance across my timeline, the posts that attract me are usually the ones shared privately. Those are the ones that give insights into the true mindset of those in my circles. What saddens me is when some of them are tinged with whispers of depression, loneliness or disillusionment with failed relationships. It's not overt, and I could be wrong, but it's what I perceive.

Often my intent is to reach out, to offer some encouraging words, but inevitably I back away. Selfishly, perhaps, lest I find myself entangled in a personal issue that I know I won't have time to be truly committed to. There's nothing worse than someone saying they'll be there for you, when in reality it's not that easy. So instead, I flit past while sending quiet words of hope and love to that person.

I have no idea where this post is going nor why I'm posting it - perhaps it's just to say, "You'll be okay, kid. You are in my thoughts even though I'm too much of a lazy selfish bitch to actually be there for you, here's hoping my thoughts of you are enough."  Now I feel bad :/ Oh this thing called life. Listen to A.A. Milne instead, he had it right.

Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend, friends.___

Tell me again how unfortunate I am to be a Macphile? I effing love Apple.___

So
This Irish chick gives 24 blow jobs to guys in a bar and is filmed doing it. It goes viral. What ensues? Slut shaming. What ensues the ensued? Mansplaining and more slut shaming with a good dose of other politically correct catchphrases and attempts at pithy statements of empowerment. The question that stumps my mind  - when is it okay to call someone a slut? Or should that word just be banned? I think a woman can do whatever she wants, provided it harms none. In this case her personal choices don't affect me at all, so whatever.

Though, sometimes, just sometimes, I wish we'd dispense with being politically correct and call things for what they are.

In the words of the immortal first chick of ass kicking, "You're a vampire? Oh, I'm sorry. Was that an offensive term? Should I say 'Undead American'?" - Buffy

Gimme the loot
Why has looting and rioting become synonymous? Riots are by virtue of its meaning a violent disturbance of peace - but should this automatically degenerate to all out anarchy? Why does protesting against an injustice turn some seemingly sane people into almost rabid animals? Whether it's violence, looting or rape - in the US, UK or Egypt, the sudden surge of degeneracy is bizarre. I know there's a perfectly smart sociological explanation for all this but I'm too tired to look it up or if I've read it before, I'm too old to remember. For now suffice to say I find it downright stupid. Lord of the motherfucking flies.

I Don't Get It
Two of my secret guilty pleasures are Pootie Tang and KPOP. KPOP for the uninitiated, is a FLA for Korean Pop (more specifically Korean music and drama). I watch Korean dramas for at least 20 hours a week (yes really). I watch KPOP via an app called Dramafever which I signed up for using an old business Facebook account.

As of this week, I suddenly began receiving Twitter news emails on an unrelated inactive personal Twitter account with absolutely no link to my Facebook business account. Here's the part I don't get... - the entire Twitter news email is in Korean with most of the items related to Korean dramas and music. Now how did they know that? Where is the link?

Given that I didn't even use the same email account to create the business account with the only thing in common being my cellphone number for verification and the computer I'm using - should this be allowed ? Is G+ using my cellphone number to cross reference my related accounts to auto-suggest people? Conversely is Twitter deciding my nationality based on some incestuous meta-technological link to Facebook?

In light of everything that's happening in the world (ISIS, Ferguson, eating hummus to raise awareness for Ebola etc) I realize my concerns are trivial and most likely irrelevant considering no one ever died from receiving an email in Korean - nevertheless - I'm curious. It's pretty curious isn't it?

So
I've lost many friends online and IRL due to my opinions and recent posts on Israel and Gaza; one sending me a message that they are disappointed in me, many trying to change my point of view or calling me anti-Semitic or generally spewing a host of tu quoque or other ballsack fallacies.

5. Christopher Hitchens once said, "The sooner there is a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as it's capitol, the safer Israel will be." Improbable, but plausable.

That's all have to say about that.

THANK YOU!
To those that wished me a Happy Birthday, thank you so very much! As always I am humbled and grateful to warrant a birthday thought. As it goes, I spent all of it in bed with a bronchial infection which has proved pretty persistent.

I just wanted to pull a Greta Garbo and be left alone. It didn't turn out that way. Trust me, if ever you’re feeling lonely, just get sick and you’re guaranteed a whole lot of unwanted visitors. Like this one acquaintance who lacks a sensitivity chip.

I was half dead, yet she sat at my bedside for two solid hours talking about herself when all I wanted to do was sleep. To make it worse, she announced that she’s down in the dumps because she accidentally fell pregnant. Really, you accidentally fell pregnant? I asked her. She was adamant she had. I don't believe  her. It’s not like you go walking one day, trip and fall on dick.

In this day and age, I can hardly believe that there are any unwanted pregnancies to begin with. In fact, more of my friends are struggling to conceive rather than wishing they couldn’t. After hearing her cry me a river story, eventually I just nodded off and awoke to the sound of beautiful white noise.

So that’s my little birthday story. Happy Birthday to me, I’m a year older, definitely not wiser in the true sense of the word, but infinitely more experienced at knowing what not to do.

Have an awesome day, you hear. Mucho love.___

Why is it when someone dies, the second news article is always, 'Celebrity Twitter Reactions'?
Seriously, who the actual fuck cares what little Miss Hollywood thinks? Oh Maya was your personal hero? Is that why you're a superficial botoxed no talent coke head? Oh Maya inspired you? Do you even fucking know why the caged bird sings?

If need be, journalists should focus on the deceased and less on sensationalizing an already sad story that engenders enough schadenfreude on its own.

Another example is all the focus placed on the shooter and the celebrity #YesAllWomen tweets than the people he gunned down. Why do you think he emailed his manifesto to the media? Because he knew there's no press like yellow press and everyone would know his name.

For the record, I do not know why the caged bird sings and you probably know who the shooter is without having to Google it. Sad.
