A Lindenmeyer System is a grammar with simple recursive rules, which produce strings of symbols that can be interpreted as graphics commands in programs such as Python or Turtle to draw a line, turn by a certain angle, etc. The result of various grammars and ways to interpret them can be quite beautiful fractal images. +Andreas Wilhelm, a German Applied Computer Science BSc. who blogs about Computer Science and Math, has been making art using L-Systems (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-system). His blog, avedo.net/554/lindenmeyer-systems-a-python-adventure/ describes his work with plenty of interesting examples. Thanks to +Appropouture for finding the animation I posted here, which he got from verbalairways.tumblr.com. It is Michael Frame's animation from the Yale site on fractal geometry. Information on how it was generated is at: http://classes.yale.edu/fractals/FracTrees/Animations/Animations.html and ... more »

Here's a closeup of one of the rocks at "Point Lake" taken by the Curiosity rover's hand imager just the other day. Stereo flicker processing by UMSF user Gerald to show 3D structure.

Are coders worth it? - There’s this great moment in the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) when the world’s most celebrated sushi chef turns to his son, who is leaving to start his own restaurant, and says: ‘You have no home to come back to.’ Which, when you think about it, isn’t harsh or discouraging but is in fact [...]The post Are coders worth it? appeared first on Aeon Magazine. http://ow.ly/2xoim1

New maglev train model put on test track in Japan
Japan's first commercial model of a magnetically levitated train has been placed on an outdoor test track. Officials at Central Japan Railway unveiled the L0 model on Monday at its test track in Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan. The track is being extended to 43 kilometers to enable full-fledged test runs.
The 5-car train, towed by a locomotive, ran on the track slowly to check whether the train bottom has proper clearance from devices on the ground.
Commercial runs of the maglev train are scheduled to start between Tokyo and Nagoya in 2027. The train will travel at speeds of up to 500 kilometers per hour and will link the 2 cities in 40 minutes.

I promised you more from these little gems I found and today it's time to pick on the husbands.
From Don'ts for Husbands:
Don't spring it on your wife five minutes before it is time to start that you are going to the other end of Europe, and would like her to go too. It is all very well to say that it doesn't take long to pack a couple of bags, but sometimes the things are not ready for packing. Besides, your wife has to make arrangements about the house and children which can't always be made at a moments notice.
