Hi there! I guess this is my intro to the LE community. :-)
I have been shooting for a while -- my dad taught me how to shoot star tracks on a Minolta when I was in grade school. But just this past year or so have I been really into LE. Come to think of it, that is also partly due to my dad, who bought me an ND400 filter for Christmas (well, it was on my Amazon wishlist). ;-)
I live in Portland, and love getting shots of the waterfront. There are also some beautiful waterfalls in the area that are great for LE.
I'm looking forward to seeing some good stuff here!

My most recent post (https://plus.google.com/u/0/110551370921127208518/posts/U5ac1rwpbTj) was my first try at long exposures with my new camera (D7000). Previously I'd used my D70s pretty extensively taking long exposures, and never noticed any hot pixels. But now, whoa! What the heck are all those little white dots? (You can even see them by looking closely at the jpg I posted, especially noticeable in the darker upper left corner.) Newer cameras supposedly have less aggressive noise reduction, in order to preserve detail (don't quote me on this). But they do offer an in-camera solution, "Long Exposure Noise Reduction," which basically means you take your picture (say, a 5 minute exposure), then the camera takes another picture of the same shutter speed, but with the shutter closed ("dark frame"). It then finds the hot pixels in the dark frame and subtracts them from the... more »

#Portland , from way up on the hill.
I finally spent some time tweaking the AF Fine Tune on the new D7000. Got out some test focus charts and the tripod. I'm happier with the resolution of my pics now. :-)
This is a 3-exposure HDR, no tripod.. I used a chain-link fence as a sort of monopod.

Hi again G+ers!
After a sort of photo snapping hiatus (well, unless you count Instagram), I am back! The past few months I've been busy framing and hanging some of my pics at a cafe, and I also did my first commissioned shoots (one for a friend's engagement, another for a bar's website). With the dough I got myself a D7000, and here is my first post as a result of that purchase.
Taken from the Burnside Bridge two nights ago.

Hey jammers!
This is a recording of me jamming with some friends last week. I recently upgraded some guitar pedals, furthering my Trey worship quest.... :-)
It starts slow, so feel free to skip the first 5 minutes if you just want the best parts.

They're not called sneaker waves because they soak your sneakers. Though they'll do that.
This 6-second exposure was sort of a test shot. The one after this was set to be 15 seconds, but halfway through that one, the tide decided to come in all at once. I grabbed my tripod (and my soaked camera bag, which almost got washed away) and ran, adrenaline pumping. Don't mess with that ocean!
Even though it's exaggerating, I'm sharing this for #DamnNearDiedThursday by +Dan Ballard.

What happens to a heart when the tide rolls in, waves crash and pull, and the sand underneath starts to give way? Does it change shape, get dragged to sea in pieces, or hold steady?
There will always be more rocks.. and more reshaping to do.

A lovely trip to the Oregon Coast this weekend, with the family and a couple of friends... all of whom were patient with my shutterbuggery.
After a sneaker wave nearly washed away my camera bag (not to mention my tripod and camera), I paid respect to the incoming tide and stayed up in the driftwood.
This one was shot with the trusty Hoya R72 Infrared filter, and processed and toned in Silver Efex Pro.

A coworker and I were lamenting the fact that neither of us had had a chance to shoot much lately, when we got the bright idea to organize a lunchtime photowalk. There are enough photo geeks in our office that we had instant critical mass (5 for the first turnout, but there will be more). Here are my results!

up
World Trade Center, Portland.
This was a handheld HDR (3 exposures) that I took on Father's Day, when the 3 of us were wandering around downtown after a delicious breakfast. (I had a lox bagel -- yum.)
I'm sure that a lot of people would find this (and a lot of my pics) to be overprocessed. But... I can't help it. I don't want to use digital darkroom tricks as a crutch, but maybe that's just my style right now. It's hard not to have thoughts like, "maybe it's time I move on from these building shots, and learn how to photograph people." I dunno, maybe it doesn't matter.

Return to Foundation
I've always been pulled in by old sci-fi book covers. I just started re-reading the Foundation trilogy, so my sensorium is putting a retro-future edge on much of what I see. When I walked by this building downtown yesterday, I knew exactly what I wanted the final product to look like.
Do you find that what you're reading/watching changes the photos you take, or how you process them?

Mothers Day
This photo was taken just moments before the one I posted yesterday (https://plus.google.com/u/0/110551370921127208518/posts/NXtdoN7c8Ax), but obviously with very different processing. Here I used an infrared filter (Hoya R72) and only one exposure (as opposed to 5 for the other). According to the EXIF data, this was a 130-second exposure, but to be honest I can't remember! The sunset had me in a trance.
Thanks to my lovely +sarah sanderling for being patient with me on this trip, letting me shoot photos on Mothers Day, not complaining when I pulled over at random viewpoints, etc. :-x

The only constant...
This past weekend, we rented a condo in Waldport, Oregon, within walking distance of this very log. The winds were constantly changing the landmarks on the beach. Footprints barely lasted long enough to walk to the water and back, and forget about recognizing the log you sat on the day before.
We were lucky to be there on a beautiful (but windy) weekend, and the beach inspired us to fill our own backyard sandbox upon our return to the city.

Announcement: The Black & White Circle
Come Monday, I'll share my validated and revised Black & White Circle (BWC) with excellent photographers that produce great monochrome images. You don't want to miss that one.
If YOU want to hop on the B&W train, do the following:
1. Help spread the word and reshare this post. Why? If you think you should be promoted, you should be willing to do the same for your fellow photographers.
2. Ask for inclusion in the comments.
3. Make sure that you share your own original B&W photography in your feed. If there are too many reshares of other peoples' work, irrelevant YouTube clips, animated GIFS, blog post teasers etc., I might not add you to the circle. The BWC is a validated quality circle that should bring people... more »

Onward and Upward
I've been a bit out of the loop lately.. Job hunting (I start my new one next week), getting all my pics and software off my old laptop, buying a new laptop, and getting all the software onto the new one... phew! Anyway, here's the first pic processed on the new laptop, taken yesterday.
A few minutes before this, I was standing right at the base of the building (like, my tripod was literally straddling one of those buttresses), when a security guard asked me to back off. (He was polite.. more so than the VA rent-a-cops from last time. ;))
This is Wells Fargo Center, tallest building in Portland. (not the location of my new job, btw!)
I'm not sure about that tree... Do you think it ruins an otherwise minimalist composition? Or is it ok?

The other night I went up the hill to OHSU to shoot a building whose architecture I'd been admiring for a while. The minute I set up my tripod, 2 cops descended on me from 2 directions, saying that photography wasn't allowed at the VA hospital. Boo! So, I walked across the sky bridge to OHSU (a much more public-friendly place) and shot some stuff like this. The red thing is the terminus of the tram that goes down the hill.

Yesterday I went hiking in the Columbia River Gorge with my good friend (and local pro photographer) Paul Tweten. The hike was a little gruelling for out-of-shape me, but I had a blast taking pictures with him, and got some great tips from him. Not to mention, he grew up around here, and knows all about edible wild plants.. We could've made a gigantic salad out of all the cool stuff we found and munched on.
I think this one is called Weisendanger Falls. This same water falls down Multnomah Falls, a little ways down the creek.
