The Nikon Shooters circle page will be removed sometime in the not too distant future. It has served its purpose, and the new communities feature works much better for sharing and interacting with large groups. Google+ limits pages and individuals to a maximum of 5000 people in their circles. When you reach that point, you cannot add any more. Obviously this page reached that point a long time ago. I stopped sharing the circles, since it was unfair to only share half the members while excluding the rest. 

Now that the Nikon community is doing well, it is the best place to share and connect with fellow Nikon photographers.

Our new community page is coming along nicely, over 2,000 members there now. Still a long ways to go before we reach the number of people who have the Nikon Shooters page in their circles, but we're off to a good start!

Our new Nikon Photographers community is off to a good start, with over 800 members. However, there are more than 12,000 members here, so if my math is correct, a few of you haven't joined yet. 

Please consider signing up for the community. It looks like it's a really good way to promote discussion among fellow photographers. I think it will be a great option.

Nikon Shooters Fans - The new "Communities" section of Google looks to be a much better option for sharing Nikon info in a large group. I ran into all kinds of limits with the 5K max on circles in this group.
I will be creating a Nikon Users Group Community as soon as the option is available. Stay tuned, and please consider joining once I have it set up!

Nikon annouces D600. Full frame, 24 mp, compact form factor (for a full frame DSLR) video of course, and lots more great features. Looks like a great way to get started in full frame!

Fun with the Nikkor 70-200 F2.8 VRII

I got my hands on and a chance to use the this beautiful lens by Nikon. I have to tell you , i am extremely impressed. I use a Nikon d5000 and snapping this bad boy in took my camera body from zero to hero in no time. The sharpness, and creamy bokeh is to die for. I am in love with this lens. The cost of this lens is way out of my league, but maybe someday i can call it mine.

Nikon Zoom Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8D AF-S Bokeh Tests

Tests taken in Yaletown this morning with the new (to me) Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8 AF-S.
All shots at 70mm zoom with various f-stops (2.8~5.6). Quite pleased with the colour rendering, and the bokeh is acceptable for a zoom in this range.
As a counterpoint, I much preferred the Angenieux-designed Tokina 28-70mm f2.5mm, but the flare was unacceptable.

The "Supermooon" is on Saturday. Here's why you should shoot it on Friday...

The difference between the full moon on Saturday and the 93% full moon on Friday is insignificant unless you're doing a closeup of the moon. If you simply want the moon in the background of a landscape, the missing 7 percent won't really be visible in your photo.

What will be visible in your photo is the difference in the light. Here in Seattle, Friday's moonrise is at 19:09 and sunset is at 20:27. Don't forget, moonrise is when it would appear above the horizon if you were at sea, or someplace where the horizon is level with your point of view. Shooting Seattle? It's going to take some time to climb above the hills and city. By then, it will be twilight and the light will be good.

Istanbul - Nikon D4 and D800


Shot in Istanbul with the Nikon D4 and D800. Everything until the timelapse was shot with the Nikon D4, very soft if you are using the full frame sensor, very sharp in crop mode! I used the D800 after the timelapse shot!

Very happy with the results. D800 is very sharp. Everything recorded internally!

Graded in 20 minutes with Davinci Resolve Lite.

Please reply with a comment stating which Nikon(s) you shoot with. I'm going to use that info to decide which cameras I should create a page for.

Once again, this group has run into the 5K limits impoosed by G+. That's wonderful, except it means I can't add more people to the circles, and I feel that's an important part of the group. So I'll create pages for specific models of Nikons, and people can circle whichever pages they're interested in. The general Nikon Shooters group will remain active as well.

D800 long exposure issues.

The introduction of the D800 had and still has the landscape community on its toes being a camera that can deliver medium format quality and such. I was exited to hear that a friend of mine had just received his and was willing to lend it to me for the weekend to do some test shots.

So this past weekend we arranged with fellow friends and photographers +Nicolas Lotsos and +Emmanuel Coupe to test it in some real life scenarios and since we all three do loads of long exposures see how it handles past 30 seconds.

Canon 5D3 vs Nikon D800 noise - but this time with down-sampling!

Hi everyone, wow, yesterday I came under a lot of criticism for presenting 1:1 crops from the #Canon #5D3 against the #Nikon #D800. Why didn't I down-sample the Nikon images for a 'fairer' comparison? Well how about to retain the detail benefit of the 36 Mpixel Nikon. After all, it would seem unfair if I downsampled it to 20 Mpixels then said it didn't have any more detail than the Mark III, right?

But there is a case for downsampling when it comes to comparing noise artefacts, so in the spirit of fairness I've added a new results page comparing the 5D3 unscaled, against the D800 down-sampled to its 20 Megapixel 'medium' size.

I've also provided an explanation of my testing methodology.

D800 First Outing....

First proper impressions of this camera today, took my D700 along for a side by side comparison which I've been able to do for the first time so here are my initial impressions...

1. I like the feel of the D800 more, it's grip feels more rubbery but whether that is down its newness or not only time will tell - it doesn't feel like it's about to fall out of your hand anyway. I shot with the additional grip on the D700 for two years but in the end I started leaving it at home because of the additional weight. I absolutely don't feel like I'm missing anything on the D800 already and won't be buying the add-on grip.

2. It's marginally lighter than the D700 but in truth when you mount any of the hefty primes I use it feels just the same.

What is your opinion?

Did you notice that Nikon announced their brand new D800 model as High Dynamic Range Camera??? They put this even in the page title. So I guess it's an important marketing aspect for them.

Here is what the brochure says:
"The D800 can shoot two frames in a single shutter release, but at different exposures: one overexposed and one underexposed. The camera then instantly combines them to create an image covering a wider dynamic range. The range can be widened by up to 3 EV for different looks, all full of saturation and tonal gradation, while the smoothness of the edge where the two exposures meet can be adjusted for a more natural appearance. Note: Tripod use is recommended."
Two exposures at 3EV max? For an HDR shooter, that sounds lame. And a pro fashion shooter will never... more »
