Castillo de Coca, Spain
This 15th century castle, near Segovia, is one of the most beautiful medieval castles in Spain. Built by Don Alonso de Fonseca, in its day it was of great importance. The thick walls and 560m moat made it impregnable and it wasn't until Napoleon's forces besieged it in the early 19th century that it's defenses were finally breached. The design of the castle has distinct Moorish influences, though much of the interior styling has been lost over the years. Today the building functions as an agricultural school.

Monrovia, Liberia

The Liberian Broadcasting System building was built in the 1980s but bad planning and then civil war meant that this concrete monstrosity would never serve the function for which it was intended. Today it stands doorless and windowless, powerless and waterless, on top of a hill near Paynesville, home to more than 250 squatters, mostly children, who have nowhere better to live.

Monrovia, Liberia

Spending three months in Liberia with the Red Cross allowed me ample time to observe and document the heroic work being done by the Liberian Red Cross burial teams in and around Monrovia. It was sometimes tough, often surreal and always interesting to see these guys go about their work.

Monrovia, Liberia
These days I sometimes find myself running through the mud and squalor of awful slums, in pouring rain, chasing men in strange suits who are carrying the body of a person - who probably died of Ebola - away for cremation, against the wishes of their family. I can walk away from all this, but so many others can't. Happy Thanksgiving to you all. Be thankful for what you've got.

Monrovia, Liberia
Wellington is the leader of one of the Red Cross burial teams here in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia where the Ebola epidemic currently sweeping West Africa is being most acutely felt. His job is difficult and dangerous and demands courage and diplomacy. Before his team can remove a body, which may be infected with the Ebola virus, he needs to gain the acceptance of the family and the community. This often requires a lot of negotiation and discussion because families prefer to bury their own dead. But when Wellington speaks, people listen.

Monrovia, Liberia

For the last month I've been on assignment with the Red Cross in Liberia covering the Ebola outbreak, which continues to worsen. I get to accompany these guys a lot as they retrieve bodies from the slums of Liberia. It is at once heartbreaking, scary and fascinating to see them go about their business, doing a job not many would care to do. It is a job, however, that needs to be done as the bodies of Ebola victims are at their most contagious.

Portsalon, Co. Donegal, Ireland

I've just returned from a wonderful week in Donegal, right up in the northwestern tip of Ireland. I had wanted to visit the beach at Portsalon for quite a while, ever since I'd read an article in The Guardian describing it as won of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Though I can't say I'd agree with The Guardian's hyperbole, it is a wonderful beach and I decided to remain there until sunset when I knew the light would be best. It didn't disappoint and while walking around I found this collapsed bridge that linked a nearby golf course to the beach. It made for a wonderful addition to the composition perfectly reflected in the water.

Donegal, Ireland

I'm off to Donegal tomorrow for a week's holidays. Ireland is a beautiful country and Donegal is surely one of it's most beautiful counties. Occupying the north-western corner of the island, it's sloping mountains, green valleys and beautiful beaches make for magical landscapes. I spent a week there last year with my family near Dunfanaghy where this photo was taken and where my mother spent the summers of her early childhood more than seventy years ago. Much has changed in Ireland since those days long ago. But much has stayed the same.

Segovia, Spain
Built by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago, the aquaduct in Segovia is perhaps the finest surviving example of its kind. Reaching a maximum height of just under 100ft (30m) and built from granite blocks without the use of mortar, the aquaduct was constructed to deliver water from the Fuente Fría river more than 10 miles away.

My friend Collins came to visit me in my studio recently and I made this portrait of him. A few people have told me lately that they prefer my portraits to my landscapes and lately I'm beginning to feel the same way. It's a whole different ballgame.

I've nearly finished revamping my website. It still needs a little bit of work here and there and it's not optimized for mobiles. If anyone would care to take a look and give some feedback I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Giants Causeway, Co Antrim, Ireland
Made up of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed some 60 million years ago, the Giants Causeway is the most popular destination for tourists in Northern Ireland. The coast of Scotland is visible from here and legend has it that the mythical Irish hero, Finn McCool, challenged a Scottish giant to a fight and built this causeway to enable him to cross to Scotland from Ireland. Geologists might disagree but, whatever the origins of this wonderful landscape are, it is a place that has stirred the imaginations of people for a long time and in Ireland we tend not to let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Vatnajökull, Iceland
Vatnajökull is the second largest glacier in Europe, covering nearly one tenth of Iceland's landmass. As you drive along the southerly part of Route 1 that circles Iceland, the enormous glacier, which is 1000m thick in places, comes down to meet the road. It is truly an amazing spectacle.

Rovinj, Croatia
Sometimes, when I'm working with wide lenses, people enter my shots without realizing it. When this happens, usually I wait patiently for them to leave. But sometimes I feel they add to the shot and I include them. I had set up this shot on a back street in Rovinj because I liked the lines and the textures and the composition as a whole. Behind me, two boys were playing with a ball. The ball came into my shot, followed by the boy. And for a few seconds he stood there, playing with the ball at his feet, seemingly oblivious to my presence. But I knew he added a strong component to the image, and he was standing exactly where I would have placed him. So I took the picture, he went back to his friend, and I went on my way.

Dinant, Belgium
This sleepy town on the Meuse river belies a violent history. It's strategic location on a river along Europe's Franco-Germanic cultural fault line often made it a place to be fought over. Way back in in 1466, the aptly named "Phillip the Good" had 800 local inhabitants thrown in the river while the town burned after they rebelled against his rule. And lest that be put down to Medieval barbarity, one of the first massacres of the First World War took place here in August 1914 when German soldiers executed 674 residents in one day. But it's hard to imagine such scenes as you look across the Meuse at dusk and watch Dinant's ancient beauty reflected in the water.

A slightly different take on the usual Dutch windmills theme. I spotted this in Friesland a while ago, an interesting juxtaposition of old and new technologies.

Rovinj, Croatia

Located on the western coast of the province of Istria, Rovinj is a fishing port that has come under the influence of many cultures and empires dating back to pre-Roman times. Its proximity to Venice was perhaps the most important factor in shaping its historical development, but it was also a part of the Austrian empire until the end of World War I, after which much of its Italian population left for Italy and Rovinj became part of Croatian Yugoslavia. Today tourism is the town's biggest industry and in summer the population swells from 15,000 to 50,000.

Mullins Mill, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland
This flour mill, near the historic Irish city of Kilkenny, was built in 1782 on the King's River. At one time there were sixteen mills along a 5-mile stretch of water in this tranquil and scenic location. Over time, all fell into disuse. Mullins Mill has been carefully restored as a museum and visitors are welcome. The area is home to a few notable historical sites, including the 10th century round tower at Kilree and the 12th century priory nearby.

Fisherman's Bastion, Budapest
Built just over a century ago and offering great views over the city of Budapest, the Halászbástya, or Fisherman's Bastion, was nearly completely destroyed during WWII. The neo-Romanesque style of the building has plenty of turrets, parapets and stairways stairways and is decorative rather than defensive. The seven towers that stand along it's terrace symbolize the seven Magyar tribes who settled the area over a thousand years ago, and who became the basis of the modern Hungarian nation.

Meteora, Greece
Meteora must rank, for me, as one of the most awe-inspiring places I've been to, and I've been to quite a few. Not only is the landscape of sandstone pillars breathtaking, but atop many of these pillars are perched ancient monasteries that are still thriving. Get there at sunset or sunrise and you have the makings of some great photos. Here we see the 16th century Monastery of St. Barbara, just after the sun went down. You can visit the monasteries. Some are easily accessible. Others require climbing hundreds of steps. All are beautifully decorated inside and offer exceptional views of an exceptional landscape.

Frankfurt, Germany
I wandered into this shopping mall in Frankfurt on a dull afternoon, but still there was plenty of natural light coming through the twisting, webbed structure of the roof. The architecture immediately appealed to me and I shot this with the intention of combining maximum depth of field with maximum angle of view (14mm) and maximum dynamic range. A million people must have walked past this same spot over the years, but I wonder did anyone see it the way I did?

Kinderdijk, Netherlands

Perhaps one of the most photogenic of all the Dutch landscapes, Kinderdijk is only about an hour from Amsterdam and yet most tourists seem to give it a miss. No complaints here - I prefer it when it's quiet, especially in winter. There are nineteen windmills here and, if the sunset is any way decent and the water is still, you can step into a timeless world and appreciate the beautiful and enduring relationship the Dutch have with the wind and the water.

Mezquita & Catedrál, Córdoba, Spain
In this picture, Islam meets Christianity in a wonderfully intricate and symbolic piece of architecture. Over the centuries during which the south of Spain was under Moorish rule, an elaborate mosque had developed in Córdoba. But, with the Reconquista, Córdoba fell in the 13th century and the victorious Christian Kings decided to build a cathedral within the mosque complex. It is a wonderful fusion of Gothic, Moorish and Renaissance styles that reflects not just the passage of time but also the rise and fall of civilizations.

Budapest, Hungary

Today it is one of Europe's most elegant cities, cut in two by the broad majestic sweep of the Danube, but until unification in 1873 Budapest was two separate cites - Buda and Pest. Viewed here from Buda Castle, the capital of Hungary is especially beautiful at the "magic hour" when natural light is fading and the city lights - particularly those on the Chain Bridge - begin to come on.

Iglesia del Sagrario, Granada, Spain

The beautiful, elaborate yet relatively small Iglesia del Sagrario in central Granada is easily missed owing to it being adjacent to the much larger and equally impressive Catedrál. But a visit is well worth it, if only to take you out of Granada's midday heat into the coolness inside. Built on the site of a former mosque, the Iglesia del Sagrario is largely baroque in it's architectural styling, the immense and ornately decorate ceilings both overwhelming and inspiring.

Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas Monastery, Meteora, Greece

Although the site seems to have been occupied by monks since the 14th century, the current monastery dates from 1510. It was abandoned in 1900 and fell into disrepair, before being renovated and reoccupied in the 1960s. The frescoes inside are well worth a look. Today there is one monk still living in the monastery.

Schloss Lichtenstein, Germany

Schloss Lichtenstein in Germany is a beautiful Romantic castle in the Swabian Alps. When I visited it last year in October I found it surprisingly shrouded in mist and dusted with snow. The castle kept disappearing behind the mist but very occasionally, as in this photo, it would appear momentarily sharp and clear. Lichtenstein, incidentally, means "Bright Stone", and refers to the type of local stone from which the castle is built.

On assignment recently in and around Agadir in southern Morocco I found myself with a free day to explore the location. I decided to check out some amazing sea arches on the beach at Legzira, a couple of hours south of Agadir. Though I usually work with wide angle lenses when shooting landscapes, this shot was crying out for a long lens to capture the numerous rock formations receding into the slightly misty air.

Ait Amira, Morocco
In Morocco I interviewed Lahcen in his home in Ait Amira. Lahcen works a nine hour day picking tomatoes and gets paid €6 for his day's work. He says that the money he earns is not enough to look after his family, but if he stops working he will get nothing. He has no work contract, is given no protection when pesticides are sprayed on the crops, is harassed for being a member of a union, and is ferried to and from work each day, standing in an packed, open truck that is both uncomfortable and dangerous. Most of the tomatoes he picks end up on the tables of European households.

Legzira, Morocco

On assignment recently in and around Agadir in southern Morocco I found myself with a free day to explore the location. I had seen photographs of these beautiful red sea arches and was determined to have a look. Two hours and three rather cramped, shared taxis later I found myself on this wonderfully unspoilt and untouristed beach called Legzira where I could spend a couple of hours watching the sun go down. The trip back to Agadir wasn't so easy though. As the sun had gone down, I found myself wandering a lonely road by moonlight, hitching to the next town so see if I could find a taxi to share with someone. But, as they say, alls well that ends well and I made it back to the hotel in reasonable time.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Berlin

Composed of 2,711 concrete slaps on a sloping, 5-acre site in the heart of Berlin, the Holocaust Memorial certainly gives inspires reflection upon what was perhaps the most shameful episode in European history, all the more relevant given that it happened within living memory. Deigned by Peter Eisenman, the memorial at times evokes a cemetery of anonymous graves. Completed in 2004, it is not without controversy, most notably when it was revealed that the anti-graffiti substance used to coat the slabs was manufactured by a company called Degussa, a subsidiary of which had manufactured Zyklon-B - the same substance used in the gas chambers of Auschwitz - during WWII.

Schloss Moritzburg, Germany

The beautiful baroque Moritzburg castle in Saxony, Germany, sits on an artificial island in the lake not far from Dresden. Originally built as a hunting lodge in the 16th century, the castle has undergone a number of extensions and modifications since. The last resident was Prince Ernst Heinrich of Saxony, who lived in the castle between 1933 and 1945, until the arrival of the Soviets.

Donegal, Ireland

Ireland is a beautiful country and Donegal is surely one of it's most beautiful counties. Occupying the north-western corner of the island, it's sloping mountains, green valleys and beautiful beaches make for magical landscapes. I spent a week there with my family in the summer, in Portnablagh, near where this photo was taken and where my mother spent the summers of her early childhood more than seventy years ago. Much has changed in ireland since those days long ago. But much has stayed the same.

Riomaggiore, Italy

The most southerly of the five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Ligurian coast, the picture-postcard Riomaggiore captures the imagination at it seems to tumble down the steep hillside into the Mediterranean. If you ever do get to visit, be sure to sample the local wine produced from the grapes of the vineyards above the town.

Evening at Dyrhólaey, Iceland

Iceland does provide some of the most spectacular landscapes and almost continuous sunshine in the summer months, so it's particularly attractive to photographers. This was shot, handheld, at around midnight in late July in the magical landscape of Dyrhólaey in southern Iceland from the top of a 120m cliff. The next morning, after quite a bit of looking, I managed to find my way onto the black sand beach you can see in the bottom left.

Afyssos, Greece

Greece can be cold in winter, but the sunsets are still spectacular. I ended up in Afyssos quite by chance. I had a bit of time to kill between visiting the monasteries of Meteora and a planned visit to Athens and a look at the map suggested the Pelion peninsula might be worth a look to fill the gap. The choice was then to visit the east coast or the west coast of the peninsula. Anticipating a wonderful Greek sunset I plumped for the west coast, and I wasn't disappointed when I arrived in the small village of Afyssos just before sundown.

Kreuzkirche, Dresden

The beautiful Kreuzkirche in Dresden has a long and turbulent history going back to the 12th century during which it has been destroyed and rebuilt five times. The last time it was destroyed was during the Allied bombardment of the city in 1945. By 1955 the gothic exterior had been reconstructed but work on the interior did not commence until 1995. Today the church is home to the famous Kreuzchoir who take full advantage of the church's excellent acoustics.

Frauenkirche, Dresden

It's hard to imagine, when you stare at the sublime beauty of Dresden's reconstructed Frauenkirche, that this church was at the epicenter of events over what must be two of the worst days in modern European history. The Allied firebombing of Dresden from 13 to 15 February 1945 destroyed the church and the entire city centre around it, killing 25,000 people, mostly women and children, many of them refugees fleeing the Russian advance from the east. The inside of the church, in the crypt of which 300 people had sought refuge, reached 1000 degrees Celcius before collapsing in on itself. Rebuilt and reconsecrated in 2005, the Frauenkirch's history epitomizes both the brilliance and the brutality on mankind.

Tuscan Trees

My contribution to #TreeTuesday curated by +Shannon S. Myers +Christina Lawrie  +Allan Cabrera +Ralph Mendoza +Kim Troutman

The winter light in Tuscany can sometimes be so soft, especially after it's been raining when a slight mist remains on the air. With the barren trees it offers a picture of Tuscany quite different to the summer scenes we are so used to.

Geesala Races, Co Mayo, Ireland

There are still some parts of Ireland that have horse racing on the beach and it is a wonderful sight to behold. The combination of man, animal and nature is compelling. The soft, rapid thud of the hooves on the sand as the horses race by the cheering of the crowds on the dunes above the beach makes for a sense of excitement rarely experienced on these otherwise tranquil locations. These events are rare enough today, but have a long history in Ireland and are well worth a visit.

The soft, rapid thud of the hooves on the sand as the horses race by the cheering of the crowds on the dunes above the beach makes for a sense of excitement rarely experienced on these otherwise tranquil locations. These events are rare enough today, but have a long history in Ireland and are well worth a visit.
