Thanks for setting up this Community +Matthew Sunday !!

As for the best of the year, I've really only begun with the start of this year's basketball season. I'm honing my technique shooting a Division III NCAA women's team. It's been great - no need for credentials, etc. and the school's information director greatly appreciates the photographs. Any constructive comments will be appreciated!

Leap brings affordable motion control to the PC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Molly McHugh
The Leap will offer some of the Kinect magic to the PC - and that's only the beginning.
Today Leap Motion introduced its flagship product, a tiny, $70, motion sensor device that makes small screens hands-free devices. The target here is to give laptop and desktop monitors Kinect-like response, making them more pliable, human-friendly machines. According to Leap Motion, it’s the Leap’s heightened accuracy that makes this all possible.
“The Leap creates a three-dimensional interaction space of 4 cubic feet to control a computer more precisely and quickly than a mouse or touchscreen, as reliably as a keyboard,” according to the company’s press release. “Leap Motion’s patented software, the heart of the Leap, represents four years of research and a series of majormathematical ... more »
I've been spending some time studying new techniques learning how to better process some older and current photographs.
In 2008, I had the privilege of attending the TED Conference at the satellite venue in Aspen, CO. On the morning I was to depart, there was a heavy snow storm that resulted in all flights being cancelled that day. I spent the day walking around town in the heavy snow taking some photos. Too late for #SnowySaturday but I didn't want to wait a week to post next Saturday. Enjoy!
46 Life Changing Seconds From Steve Jobs [video]
"When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and you’re life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.
That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again." ~Steve Jobs
Below is my first HDR photograph using techniques I learned from +Trey Ratcliff's HDR course and some online tips posted by +Scott Kublin. Unfortunately, it's somewhat more saturated than what I saw in Photoshop. So I'll have to work on that difference. Feel free to provide constructive feedback.
The ability to innovate is NOT based on genetics.
That's the powerful argument that Clay Christensen makes in the awesome book, The Innovator's DNA, that I am reading right now.
He lays out the processes and practices that innovators take to make bold new business ideas.
Here is his "Model for Generating Innovative Ideas" below:
I believe it. I do believe that innovation starts with courage to challenge the status quo, and then builds upon that with the steps he outlines.
A look at Diffbot, a visually learning robot
(As used in AOL's Editions, look at how the technology works).
Many of us use RSS feeds to get updates from our favorite news sites or blogs; however, RSS is only available on a very small portion of the Internet. Michael Tung, CEO of Diffbot, ran into this problem while trying to stay on top of class web pages while a student at Stanford. Since the sites didn’t have RSS, he developed a unique algorithm that found updates by looking at the visual layout of the page, as opposed to the HTML. After refining the program over the last two years, Diffbot has released an API that has allowed developers to accomplish some fascinating things with this technology.
“We provide technology that allows applications to interpret web pages like a human being,” explains Tung. “We’ve discovered that the entire Internet can beclassifie... more »
This is just unbelievably cool:
Just an ordinary day at Copenhagen Central Station. 2:32 PM.
Some guy sets up a snare drum and starts playing. Sounds like the ostinato rhythm from Ravel's Boléro. Oh wait, there is this other guy with a cello accompanying him playing the ostinato in pizzicato. A woman stops by. She takes her flute out of her case just in time to start the melody.
So far it looks just like an ordinary bunch of street musicians. However, by the time the clarinet and bassoons join you start to realize that something extraordinary is going on. More and more musicians stop by and unpack their instruments just in time to start playing! It's a full-fledged friggin symphony orchestra! In fact, it's the Copenhagen Philharmonic!
This is the best flashmob, ever!
Incredible report by Mary Meeker called USA Inc.
USA Inc.is a non-partisan report that looks at the U.S. federal government (and its financials) as if it were a business. Mary Meeker, partner at KPCB and former financial analyst at Morgan Stanley, created and compiled the report with the goal of informing the discussion about our financial situation and outlook. USA Inc. examines the country’s income statement and balance sheet, aiming to interpret the underlying data and facts, and illustrate patterns and trends in easy-to-understand ways. The report also analyzes the drivers of federal revenue and the history of expense growth, and discusses basic scenarios for how revenue and expense growth might change to help America move toward positive cash flow.
