You can learn anything in 20 hours!
Great talk for anyone interested in learning new things. As per Josh Kaufman, all it takes is 20 hours of focused effort to become reasonably good at anything - way less than what most of us believe. That is just a week of part-time effort, or a month for just a couple of hours a day!
The misconception about how long it takes to learn and become good at something new was fueled partly by the "10,,000 hour rule" popularized by Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers.. But that rule really applies only to becoming a world class expert, not on becoming reasonably good. In fact Josh Kaufman claims you can become "astoundingly good" in 20 hours. As proof of his theory, Josh Kaufman shows off his newly acquired Ukulele playing skills - which he spent only 20 hours perfecting (pretty good job actually). N... more »

Leadership: Leaders everywhere: A conversation with Gary Hamel
by McKinsey & Company
The management writer and academic explains why he believes companies that empower and train people at all levels to lead can create competitive advantage.
This time around, the challenge is what we call Leaders Everywhere. And the thought underneath this is that we live in a world where never before has leadership been so necessary but where so often leaders seem to come up short. Our sense is that this is not really a problem of individuals; this is a problem of organizational structures—those traditional pyramidal structures that demand too much of too few and not enough of everyone else.
So here we are in a world of amazing complexity and complex organizations that just require too much from those few people up top. They don’t have the intellectual diversity, the ... more »

Connecting everything: A conversation with Cisco’s Padmasree Warrior - by McKinsey & Company
Cisco’s chief technology and strategy officer describes how the exponential growth of connectivity between people and devices, both mobile and network, will change commerce, business systems, and individual behavior.
The scale of change, even in the next five years, will be dramatic. And I think everyone has to get ready for it, and I think we as users have to get ready for it. I’m a technologist, and I have to get ready for it because a lot of things will happen that we don’t even anticipate today. Read on: http://goo.gl/uETSS
