Art through the Apeture Photography11,279There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! Thank you @118149685580234696847  for so graciously letting me use your shots from last year for our banner.2nd Annual "You Are Beautiful"2015-02-22 04:00:00300
Bette Kauffman26,019And it won't be so cold in December, right? Well, regardless, +Bette Kauffman is coming to town--God willing and some nut doesn't set fire to the infrastructure again! So it's photowalk time. Calling all Chicago and vicinity photogs. Hope you can join me. We'll gather at the Bean for the obligatory group shot there, and I want to check out what has transpired with the construction that was underway in Millenium Park last time I was there. After that, I'm easy. We can go anywhere y'all are inspired to go, including back up to this beach where Tom and I were freezing our tushes back in March 2013.It really was cold that day....2014-12-20 17:00:002
Bette Kauffman26,019@115907986192399529711 is coming to Chicago! Will arrive some time Friday Sept. 26 and be ready for a photowalk Saturday. I have us meeting at The Bean, but if anyone has a better idea, I'm game. I'll be staying in Club Quarters Hotel in The Loop, but I'm comfortable using CTA to get about anywhere I want to go. If you can't join in until lunch time or after, we can make that work too. I'll have to head back to my hotel room by 4 p.m. to get ready for the opera. Y'all get this on your calendar, now!Chicago in September!2014-09-27 17:00:003

Bette Kauffman26,019Yes, Bette Kauffman is coming to Chicago! Opera Friday and Saturday evening, photowalk Saturday, home Sunday. Meet me at The Bean (Cloud Gate to the purists). If the weather cooperates, I plan to be out until about 4:30 p.m. If the weather is nasty (seems a real possibility this year), we'll head up to the conservatory and feast our lenses on orchids and such. Or go anywhere else protected from the elements y'all might suggest. I'm easy to please! Join me for all or part of the day. This photo is so deceptive! I could barely stand in the unprotected spot to shoot this photo. The wind was cold and hard in my face, so strong I could barely be still enough for this handheld shot, even on a bright, sunny day. Except, in the distance, those are clouds rolling in! The butterflies are missing out!! Thanks to +Steele Wotkyns for capturing this glorious stand of Monarda for #wildflowerwednesday . Here in Louisiana, we call this "beebalm," but what we call "horsemint" is different. So I'm curious if Mondarda is called "horsemint" in other parts of the country.

For #wildflowerwednesday and hello to +Bette Kauffman and the entire team, here's Horsemint or Beebalm (Monarda fistulosa menthifolia). It's growing in large patches in such a wet year!___The butterflies are missing out!! Thanks to +Steele Wotkyns for capturing this glorious stand of Monarda for #wildflowerwednesday . At the risk of seeming callous, this is a flower I would like to carefully take apart so I could see distinctly all the parts! Wonderful subject, +Bob Danley! Thanks for sharing with #wildflowerwednesday .

#wildflowerwednesday  - Parrot's Beak
Pretty good wildflower action still at 7,000 feet (Lost Trail Pass) as illustrated by Pedicularis racemosa , species of Lousewort.
Curated by +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes: This species is a Lousewort (35 native species) belonging to the Figwort family (Brandenburg 2010). Louseworts are partially parasitic on nearby plants for nutrients (Lackschewitz 1991). Otherwise these plants are dramatic in color and structure mostly in mesic forested areas. This plant was found on the edge of a bog that has atmospheric deposits from the last 12,000 years! So... +John Munt controlled his tongue long enough to shoot and share this pretty little pest with #wildflowerwednesday ! But I'm curious. I'd love to hear his 'French' for addressing this plant!

I imagine most gardeners have seen this annual alien wildflower weed. I also imagine most gardeners lacking a proper name use a bit of “French" when they refer to it. It is an extremely prolific seed producer that can send off thousands of tiny seeds on the wind in a single season. Since each one seems to germinate in my garden my ‘French’ also gets carried away on the breeze. So in an effort to clean up America’s air waves let me give you the proper name of this weed while I zip my lips.

Lindheimer's Beeblossom (Gaura lindheimeri)

It was hot, hot, hot, the wind was blowing, and I was shooting for the very first time with a brand new Pentax K-3. Is that enough excuses for the DOF being a bit off in this photo?

Well, regardless, tomorrow is STILL #wildflowerwednesday and y'all are invited to share your much more perfecter shots! Tag me, +Bette Kauffman and be sure to share the story of the shot!. And only wildflowers in their natural habitat, please.

This is definitely beeblossom, but I should confess I am not positive it is is Lindheimer's. I think it is because I was in the #SabineNWR on the #BlueGooseTrail when I shot this and Cameron Parish is one of a handful of Louisiana parishes to which it is native. But if any of you knows better, please correct me!

I think it is because I was in the #SabineNWR on the #BlueGooseTrail when I shot this and Cameron Parish is one of a handful of Louisiana parishes to which it is native. But if any of you knows better, please correct me!

This was my first visit to the Sabine. It is an amazing place way down in the southwest corner of Louisiana between the city of Sulphur and the Gulf of Mexico. It is acres and acres of wetlands. The Blue Goose Trail goes from Hwy 27 (the Creole Nature Trail) east through brackish marsh to the shore of Calcasieu Lake. On the west side of the highway is freshwater marsh. Very cool.

On this hot summer day, the closer to the lake I got, the worse the biting insects were. The last 30 yards to the lake, I couldn't breath and when I opened my mouth to curse, I took in a bug. They looked and felt to me like what we called "sweat bees" when I was a kid in the mid-West. Whatever they were, they drove me back from the lakeshore before I could get a single shot! Fortunately, the beeblossom was further inland where the bugs were just a minor annoyance.___

Campanula persicifolia

This is day 3/5 of #fivedaynaturechallenge which I was invited to participate in by my friend +Jari Pohjasmäki. Thank you Jari! :)

I would like to invite any photographer who is able and willing to participate and maybe has secretly hoped to get an invitation, but still haven't got a chance to join this fun :)

Rules are very simple :
- post 5 shots during 5 days
- mention the person who invited you
- invite another person to join in
- use the hashtag for the challenge

Have fun! :)

Wow! No wall flowers here! What would summer and prairie and meadow and road ditches and birds and bees BE without purple coneflower! Thanks, +Ohio Prairie Nursery!

#WildflowerWednesday! Perhaps the most widely recognized wildflower, Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is the gateway flower of prairies!

In the summer months, you'll find this flower swarming with bees, butterflies and other pollinators. In the fall, look for songbirds to frequent the plant to eat the seeds.

I was so certain that these were Fairy Trumpets at the time I took them that I never bothered getting other identifying characteristics (i.e. leaves) in the shot.

I'm not as sure of that ID now, but I still think that's probably what they are.  They are all over the Jemez Mountains right now, and pretty much at the end of their bloom.___These lovelies look like they're about to snap, crackle & pop! Charmed (Lanceleaf Plantain [Plantago lanceolata])

So..., it is a bit embarrassing to post a wildflower I have not identified as a reminder for #wildflowerwednesday ! But here I am doing it. I was totally charmed by these along Highway 26 in Oregon, and it seemed I saw them everywhere I went. Nevertheless, I have not been able to come up with a description that enabled me to locate them online. So.....

Come on, all #wildflowerwednesday aficionados and help me out, especially those who live out west! Tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday once again and I'm looking forward to seeing your recent successes. Don't forget to share the story of the shot, too, and tag me, +Bette Kauffman.

Yes! This is why I hang out with native plant people here in Louisiana and plant nothing but natives in my yard. Thanks to +Ohio Prairie Nursery for sharing this with #wildflowerwednesday .

Here's a short story for #wildflowerwednesday

If you plant it, they will come...

One of the members of our staff lives in an urban area on a fairly busy street. Three years ago, they made a conscientious decision to turn their mulch beds into small prairie areas. Over these years, they have watched their prairie come to life with beautiful blooms and experienced an uptick in different species of birds, bees, butterflies and moths, species they had never seen with the mulch beds and the annuals and perennials they traditionally planted,

Yesterday, while out admiring the plants, they noticed that the female and male American Goldfinches that have taken up residence in a nearby tree perched on Ox-Eye Sunflower. The birds only started appearing two years ago when the prairie was first beginning to bloom.

The highlight of the their day appeared in the form of a Hummingbird Moth. This Snowberry clearwing showed up to feast on Wild Bergamot and stayed long enough for them to snap a few (if grainy) pics.

Moral of the story: No matter how big or small the area, you can plant native species. Native grasses and wildflowers make for beautiful landscaping and also attract and benefit wildlife and pollinators, but reduce the need for watering, fertilizers and pesticides.

If you're interested in learning more about how you can plant native species in your yard, stop out and see us this Saturday at Springfield Bog! We'd love to chat!

Although I'm not sure if #wildflowerwednesday was still extant I thought I'd post these delightful recent ones. The two views of (Calochortus nuttallii ) remind me so much of my dear mother, Patricia (Pat) since this Sego lily was one of her all-time favorites! Also, two mystery (to me, anyway) wildflowers: so, I'm hoping to enlist the assistance of +Bette Kauffman and in particular +Bob Danley to identify them. Both were in riparian and Rocky Mountain (Colorado) habitats and the white one's flower was nearly hiding under its leaves. Sure hope to hear from you & enjoy!
