Art through the Aperture Photography (Paula)11,939There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! Thank you @118149685580234696847  for so graciously letting me use your shots from last year for our banner.2nd Annual "You Are Beautiful"2015-02-22 04:00:00298
Bette Kauffman25,956And it won't be so cold in December, right? Well, regardless, +Bette Kauffman is coming to town--God willing and some nut doesn't set fire to the infrastructure again! So it's photowalk time. Calling all Chicago and vicinity photogs. Hope you can join me. We'll gather at the Bean for the obligatory group shot there, and I want to check out what has transpired with the construction that was underway in Millenium Park last time I was there. After that, I'm easy. We can go anywhere y'all are inspired to go, including back up to this beach where Tom and I were freezing our tushes back in March 2013.It really was cold that day....2014-12-20 17:00:002
Bette Kauffman25,956@115907986192399529711 is coming to Chicago! Will arrive some time Friday Sept. 26 and be ready for a photowalk Saturday. I have us meeting at The Bean, but if anyone has a better idea, I'm game. I'll be staying in Club Quarters Hotel in The Loop, but I'm comfortable using CTA to get about anywhere I want to go. If you can't join in until lunch time or after, we can make that work too. I'll have to head back to my hotel room by 4 p.m. to get ready for the opera. Y'all get this on your calendar, now!Chicago in September!2014-09-27 17:00:003
Bette Kauffman25,956Yes, Bette Kauffman is coming to Chicago! Opera Friday and Saturday evening, photowalk Saturday, home Sunday. Meet me at The Bean (Cloud Gate to the purists). If the weather cooperates, I plan to be out until about 4:30 p.m. If the weather is nasty (seems a real possibility this year), we'll head up to the conservatory and feast our lenses on orchids and such. Or go anywhere else protected from the elements y'all might suggest. I'm easy to please! Join me for all or part of the day. (Yes, that's @107400819855192601582 in the photo.)The Chicago-in-March photowalk is on!2014-03-08 17:00:007

Violet Lady Blue-Eyed Mary (Collinsia violacea)

Or so that's what I thought +Eric Hunt called this little beauty. That's what I wrote in my notes! And this little beauty is calling you to #wildflowerwednesday this week. So excited to be home from a terrific weekend in Arkansas with a whole new batch of wonderful wildflower photos.

So tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday and you can join the fun. Just share a wildflower in its natural habitat and tag me, +Bette Kauffman. And tell the story of the shot. I love the stories!

So here's my story. We are walking through #MiddleForkBarrens, a lovely natural area near Hot Springs Village, Ark. I'm lagging behind the group as usual, seeing and photographing all kinds of species that are new to me. +Eric Hunt is leading this field trip, and as I'm catching up to the group, I swear he called this... more »

"Sometimes I suspect that Jesus looks at his Church and, with patience and love, shakes his head and thinks, 'That wasn’t quite what I had in mind.'"

The world will believe in Jesus only insofar as we are believable as the Body of Jesus. And we do not have the luxury of assigning one segment of our lives to doing Christ-like things while reserving the rest of it for all that worldly stuff we really like.___"Sometimes I suspect that Jesus looks at his Church and, with patience and love, shakes his head and thinks, 'That wasn’t quite what I had in mind.'"

I was not with +Eric Hunt when he shot this one. I had to head home when this cool local guy came along and offered a ride into this newly acquired natural area. Next time! Thanks for sharing with #wildflowerwednesday.

Tradescantia ernestiana

This was taken in a newly acquired tract in the natural area across the Middle Fork of the Saline river. As we finished up our Sunday hike, a neighbor drove up in a 4WD golf cart (I kid you not!!) and chatted us up. He volunteers to cut down the invasive red cedars on the property and was happy to give me a whirlwind tour of the new tract.

Ok, I have to reshare this to continue the saga of the ticks. Last night, sitting on the couch with my computer in my lap doing my #wildflowerwednesday curatorial gig, I stopped to scratch an itch, only to find another tick in my fingers--this one a bloody one because I had just dislodged him from feeding on my belly. In horror, I jumped up and stripped off clothes. (Sorry for the sorry-assed imagery, but.... truth must be told!) I found three more ticks, all around my waist. All four had bitten me, but only two had gotten to a blood vessel big enough to leave a little blood-filled hematoma under the skin. Yuck!

So that's a total of 9 ticks. But here's the interesting question. Where were the 4 I found on ME last night between Sunday morning when I was in the tick-infested natural area and Wednesday night when I found them? Because I promise you, they weren't on my body that... more »

I'm lagging behind the group as usual, seeing and photographing all kinds of species that are new to me. +Eric Hunt is leading this field trip, and as I'm catching up to the group, I swear he called this "Violet Lady." If he said the Latin name, I didn't get it into my notes, and now, searching the internet, I can't find a shred of evidence that a flower of that name exists in Arkansas! So, Eric, ID please!

But that's not all. As Eric is walking away, and just as I put my knees to the ground, he says, "Don't get down on the ground. This place is full of ticks!" Well, it was too late. And it wouldn't have mattered anyway. So later that night, home in Louisiana, I took 5 ticks off my body. All in a days fun!___Ok, I have to reshare this to continue the saga of the ticks. Where were the 4 I found on ME last night between Sunday morning when I was in the tick-infested natural area and Wednesday night when I found them? Because I promise you, they weren't on my body that whole time! But I do believe they were under my waistband for a number of hours in order to be embedded to the extent they were.

Theory 1. After being in this tick-infested natural area, I hopped in my car and drove almost 4 hours home. They got off me in the car and got back on me in the car, but.... why not Monday or Tuesday instead of Wednesday?

Theory 2. The jeans I wore Wednesday were the same jeans I wore on the drive TO Hot Springs Friday afternoon. Since I did some roadside photography, the ticks got on my pants then and when I put them back on Wednesday--NOT having washed them--the ticks jumped me. But.... why not Friday evening? I wore those pants until late evening. Why no ticks on me when I took them off? Would ticks even still be alive 5 days later when I put the pants on again?

Theory 3. ?????

And now that I have been bitten by 5 ticks in the last 5 days, 3 superficial skin bites and 2 bloody bites, should I be worried? Should I take any preventive measures (besides scrubbing the bites immediately upon finding them with soap, which I've already done)?

Gorgeous contribution to yesterday's #wildflowerwednesday by +Bob Danley. Thanks, Bob.

Fairy Slipper (Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis)
for #wildflowerwednesday curated by +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes: Brandenburg (2010) refers to this variety (there are 2 for this species) as Pacific Fairy Slipper, restricted to the Pacific Northwest. Variety americana (white lip instead of purple blotchings) can be found in the Upper Midwest and Northeast.

Habitat: Found growing in cool, wet forest with abundant organic content shortly after snow melt (Schiemann 2006).

Specialness: Orchids are epiphytes in most of the tropics around the world. Here in North America they grow in the soil. The flower structure and colors are perhaps the most endearing part of these plants.

Even This

What an intense blue! We are on a roll with the blues tonight! Lovely share from +Bob Danley for #wildflowerwednesday.

Low Larkspur (Delphinium bicolor)
in keeping with a blue theme :-)

Natural History Notes: Sixty species of Delphinium occur over the U.S. except for the extreme northeast and southeast states (Brandenburg 2010). Delphinium is derived from Greek meaning "dolphin", perhaps alluding to shape of unopened flower (Mathews 2003).

Habitat: This species is found in grassland, sage steppe and open Ponderosa Pine forest. It is not particularly robust in size usually below 16 inches in height (Schiemann 2005).

Toxicity: Pretty poisonous to cattle (Lackschewitz 1991). According to Mathews (2003) seeds "have been ground up to poison lice."___What an intense blue! We are on a roll with the blues tonight! Lovely share from +Bob Danley for #wildflowerwednesday.

Aaannnnd, another violet--different species, different part of the country. Lovely, +Bob Danley and thanks for sharing with #wildflowerwednesday.

Sand Violet (Viola adunca)
for #wildflowerwednesday curated by +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes: Violets are probably one of our most recognized wildflowers; there are 68 species in the U.S. (Brandenburg 2010).

Habitat: Grows in the vicinity of forested streambanks in much of the west, upper midwest and northeast.

Bloom: One of the first flowers to bloom after winter snow melts in early spring (Mathews 2003). Fertilized flowers form seedpods that "explosively" ejects seeds (Turner and Gustafson 2006).

Bird's Foot Violet (Viola pedata)

Tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday! And it is entirely appropriate that I share this, I believe my last wildflower from #DevilsEyebrow in Arkansas, because this weekend I'll be back in "The Natural State" collecting a whole new batch from sites I don't yet know about. It's the spring meeting of the #ArkansasNativePlantSociety, and +Eric Hunt will again be a field trip leader.

After the Devil's Eyebrow experience..., well, I was in about as bad a shape as this somewhat bedraggled violet when I took this shot. We were struggling.. I was struggling back up a long and steep gravelly path when we encountered this little pretty growing right out in the middle of the path. But even with "bites" out of the petals, it was intensely blue with particularly dark throat markings. Moreover, it was my only encounter... more »

Moreover, it was my only encounter so far with bird's foot violet.

So... share us something tomorrow, specifically wildflowers in their natural habitat, and tell the story of the shot. Don't forget to tag me, +Bette Kauffman and #wildflowerwednesday.___

TGIF

So.... a well deserved #feetupfriday for +Tom Tran & +Tisha Montgomery. Two of my graduate student advisees did an excellent job of presenting their exit projects and passing oral exams today. And... a friend died too young. And year-long work teaching a small, poor community how to stand up for itself came to fruition. And a former love whom I'm always glad but pained to see showed up. All in all, a proud, sad, gratified, exhausted but always hopeful human I am.

Here's a great opportunity, friends of #wildflowerwednesday. +Michael Frye share not only his beautiful image but his technique!

Focus-Stacking Season

It’s spring, which means it’s wildflower season, and focus-stacking season.

I made this photograph last Wednesday afternoon near El Portal, outside of Yosemite. We didn't see any large swaths of poppies, but +Claudia Welsh and I did find some nice mixes of poppies and other flowers (in this case lupines, goldfields, and tri-colored gilia).

As I was processing the images later, it occurred to me that all of them required focus stacking. Literally every single one. And this is very common for me when photographing wildflowers. I don't need focus stacking often in other seasons, but in spring I use this technique all the time, because otherwise it's usually impossible to get everything in focus.

I explain the focus-stacking process in detail in my latest blog post, which includes a short video showing how I focus in the field:

One of Louisiana's finest for #wildflowerwednesday! This is not the only place the copper iris grows, but here you will often hear it proudly called "Louisiana Copper Iris." And I suppose I should confess that it is possible someone actually sort of planted these. In these parts, people do throw wildflower seeds and bulbs into the ditches from time to time. But, hey, they are wildflowers and they were in a road ditch, for crying out loud, and I had to wade in ditch water to get to them, so don't give me any grief! ___

My first post of the year for #Wildflowerwednesday  curated by +Bette Kauffman!  Yes, there's finally something blooming out here where I am.

I think I might have photographed this species before -- I'd have to check my archives -- but I'm sure I've never seen one so brilliant red.  Your monitor cannot reproduce the shade of red that these flowers are.  They are even out-of-gamut on my professional, calibrated, wide-gamut monitor.  You have to be standing in front of them to fully see how red these are.___Sooo... So... I've been missing from G+ for days. Didn't even get a #wildflowerwednesday reminder post up, but I know some images got posted and I'm about to check them out.

On my two-day jaunt through southern Louisiana last week during spring break, the fleabane was fresh and perky and everywhere. This particular bunch was flourishing on the edges of the rip rap bank of a side-water of the Mississippi River.
