The worst car ever built

I am German, and as such, I take pride in the fact that we manage to build some of the most awesome cars on the planet. But did you know that we have also built the absolute worst car on the planet?

Yes, we are able to produce the whole range. ;)

How To Take Professional Pictures With Your iPhone 6s

Watch +Lee Morris take professional looking shots with an iPhone.

Guys, this is the stuff shit storms are made of. While all Lee is doing is to show that it's not the camera making the pictures (duh!), he's already getting his share of hatred for it. But it seems he's prepared to take it. ;)

Enjoy!

Glass Photography

There's a lot to learn in this video by the good guys at +The Slanted Lens: How to set up a scene with glass and water. How to trigger a splash shot so that it is repeatable. How to light such a scene (trick with translucent materials). How to photograph on a reflective surface... and more.

How to Get a Live Web Preview in Photoshop
► Read more at [ frb.li/webpreview ]

You may put many hours into editing an image to get everything perfect in Photoshop. But once you export and upload it to the web, you may be shocked to see that the colors are all wrong, the sharpening is too strong, and it just does not look good at thumbnail size. Sounds familiar, eh?

In this video tutorial, I will show you how to get a live web preview of the images you edit in Photoshop. You can also download the tools I created to achieve that.

Lightroom's Develop presets are a great way to speed up and simplify your editing workflow. Presets let you store the develop settings you apply to one image and apply those settings to any other image with a single click. You may be used to applying presets that you acquired from someone else, but how do you create your own presets?

In this tutorial, you'll learn the basics of how to start creating Lightroom presets yourself.

Comparing the distant past and the present photographically

Here's a great article on +PetaPixel with some very old shots from over 100 years ago of China and their present counterparts. It's amazing how things change, and this series of photographs gives you a whole different sense of time. It's almost like time travel.

High-end photography just got a whole lot better... if you have $33,000 to spend

When it comes to image quality, it probably does not get any better than the new Hasselblad H6D 100 megapixel medium format camera. Even if you haven't got the $33,000 to buy the body, it's interesting to watch this video to get a sense of just how good those images are.

...and for the mess the Karl Taylor creates in this shoot. ;)

The effect of lossy image compression

Here you see the effect that different image formats (i.e. the corresponding compression) has on your images. Jon Sneyers saved and re-opened the same image 500 times in each format and turned the results into a video.

Not that you would ever re-save an image 500 times, but the results show you the general effect that these formats have. E.g. JPEG pixelates your images while WepP desaturates the colors and blurs the edges.

...just something to keep in mind next time you save your own images.

Impressive Time Travel: Bringing the old times to life

This animation was created from photos that were taken over 100 years ago. And it puts you right into that time, creating the illusion that you're there walking through the streets of New York, Boston, Detroit and Washington, D.C. around 1900. Amazing!

The creator used 3D animation techniques to make it happen.

So, it's time for you to do some time traveling now! :)

The Pinnacle of Creativity

The video below just blew my mind. When I first saw +Erik Johansson's latest image, I thought "Nice Photoshop manipulation work." I had no idea that sooo much work went into it. Erik actually used 17 square meters of real mirrors for this.

On top of the image, the creativity and the sheer amount of work he invested in creating this Behind-the-Scenes video is striking. The video is a piece of art itself.

In this video tutorial, I am showing you a trick that helps you create highly precise masks in Lightroom. The idea is to take a 2-stage approach by first creating a mask that extends beyond the edges of the area you're trying to select. At the second stage, we're going to use the Eraser brush with the Auto Mask feature to get rid of the excess mask areas.

Finally, robots become human-like (totally off-topic)

This is the first time I actually felt something like sympathy for a machine. If you watch this little guy walk through a snowy forest, struggling, you feel the urge to help 'him' (or 'it'?).

And when you see the operator pushing 'him' around, you kind-of want to rush to 'his' defense.

It's fascinating but also a bit creepy.

ISO is the new Megapixels... kind of

I read that somewhere, and it's probably true. Now that most cameras' resolution leaves nothing to be desired, the war is on on the new battlefield: ISO sensitivity.

But what does all this ISO stuff actually mean, and do you need ISO 4,560,000? Here's a good in-depth video by +Tony Northrup explaining it.

Please don't be this guy...

When you're doing street photography, you have to be very comfortable with confrontation. Hard core street photographers may even enjoy this type of situation for some reason.

In this video, street photographer Chuck Jines shows you his awful way of dealing with people that don't want their picture taken: He harasses them. And he even seems to be proud of it.

It's people like him who give street photography a bad reputation.

Yes, in some countries ,the law allows you to take pictures of people in public places. In others, it does not, and for good reason. But irrespective of the laws in your country, you have to treat people with respect.

New customization features in Photoshop

In its newest release, Photoshop now offers a fresh UI look, a new start screen to quickly get you going with what you intend to do, and it has new toolbar customization options that let you shape your workspace exactly how you wish. This can make your workflow much more efficient.

My personal tip: Before you choose to customize your toolbar, you should create a new workspace and tell Photoshop to save your toolbar with that workspace. This way, you can go back to the default workspace at any time. This can be handy, e.g. when you're trying to follow along with a tutorial that is based on the default tool configuration.

How does a light field camera work?

Light field cameras capture image information that enables you to do lots of cool stuff with a picture after you've actually taken it. For instance, you can refocus the image or you can slightly shift your position creating a parallax effect.

This all seems like black magic. How can a single camera capture the information that allows you to do this?

Light field cameras capture image information that enables you to do lots of cool stuff with a picture after you've actually taken it. For instance, you can refocus the image or you can slightly shift your position creating a parallax effect.

This all seems like black magic. How can a single camera capture the information that allows you to do this?

This video explains the principles behind the technology. It's essentially a clever way of collecting the light through a huge array of very small lenses. This way, the camera can capture all the additional information that is necessary for doing the cool things in post processing.___

JPEG compression levels in Photoshop and Lightroom explained

Did you ever wonder what exactly those quality numbers mean when you export an image to a JPEG?

He was a good explanation and a few guidelines to shed some light on this question. It's all about a trade-off between file size and quality. If you go too high on the quality setting, you're going to waste space without increasing the quality of your images. If you go to low, you will introduce artifacts and reduce the image quality.

Check out this article to learn how to set the quality level correctly.

A graphics tablet for Photoshop and Lightroom on your iPad

Did you ever want to get a graphics tablet for your work in Lightroom or Photoshop? If you want to get a good one, it could cost you a few hundred bucks. A Wacom Cintiq that would let you draw right on the screen would be quite a bit more expensive.

Here's an alternative that only costs you about 20 bucks. Astropad is an iPad app the mirrors your screen and lets you use a stylus to operate directly on your images if you have a Mac.

Some super-slowmo fun with flames

This don't really have anything to do with photography, but it's still fun. Watch those flames rotate in super slow motion.

A great lesson on creativity...

This is a great lesson on what it means to be creative. Creativity emerges when you're forced to think differently - when you are faced with a task and some unusual restrictions enforced upon you. That's when you have to leave your comfort zone to find a solution that you might otherwise not have considered. You’re being creative!

This video shows a great exercise to practice this. It shows what happens when a group of photographers is given a simple subject and the task I've never shooting the same image twice. So each photographer is forced to come up with a new idea when it's their turn to take a photo.

When was the last time you forced yourself to do something new?

Those were the alchemist days of photography

Aren't you glad that don't have to deal with all sorts of chemicals right on the spot when you take a photograph?

But I guess that's all a question of perspective. Michael Shindler puts it this way: "This process is really very, very simple. There are only about eight chemicals involved."

Photographers are obsessed... in a way

Here's a little test to see how different people look at a photograph. The eye tracking technology involved reveals some interesting differences between a non-photographer, a photography student and a pro photographer.

Are you obsessed too?

16 Cameras in one - is that the future of photography?

There is a new competitor on the camera market with a new concept called "computational photography". A camera with 16 individual camera modules letting you take the picture after you actually shot it.

An interesting concept. Is this the future?

Yes, we are able to produce the whole range. ;)

Can you do this with your camera drone?

Caution: You need a place that is really abandoned, some spare drones, spare parts, and the knowledge about how to fix these things... and some flying skills don't hurt too. Good luck! ;)

Noise Stacking - How to Shoot at High ISO Without the Noise
►  Read more at [ frb.li/fddf31 ]

Shooting with a high ISO sensitivity naturally creates noisy images. We all know that. And removing that noise in post-production is difficult and impacts image quality. But there is actually a way to reduce the noise greatly even in high-ISO images with very little impact on the details in your image. And this technique does not require any noise reduction software or plugins.

The trick that Andy Astbury shows you in this video is based on the idea that image noise is random. If you shoot multiple photos of the exact same scene, this allows Photoshop to even out the differences created by the noisy pixels and the pixels that are actually representing the color or brightness of the scene.
