Please don't be this guy...

When you're doing street photography, you have to be very comfortable with confrontation. Hard core street photographers may even enjoy this type of situation for some reason.

In this video, street photographer Chuck Jines shows you his awful way of dealing with people that don't want their picture taken: He harasses them. And he even seems to be proud of it.

It's people like him who give street photography a bad reputation.

Yes, in some countries ,the law allows you to take pictures of people in public places. In others, it does not, and for good reason. But irrespective of the laws in your country, you have to treat people with respect.

New customization features in Photoshop

In its newest release, Photoshop now offers a fresh UI look, a new start screen to quickly get you going with what you intend to do, and it has new toolbar customization options that let you shape your workspace exactly how you wish. This can make your workflow much more efficient.

My personal tip: Before you choose to customize your toolbar, you should create a new workspace and tell Photoshop to save your toolbar with that workspace. This way, you can go back to the default workspace at any time. This can be handy, e.g. when you're trying to follow along with a tutorial that is based on the default tool configuration.

How does a light field camera work?

Light field cameras capture image information that enables you to do lots of cool stuff with a picture after you've actually taken it. For instance, you can refocus the image or you can slightly shift your position creating a parallax effect.

This all seems like black magic. How can a single camera capture the information that allows you to do this?

This video explains the principles behind the technology. It's essentially a clever way of collecting the light through a huge array of very small lenses. This way, the camera can capture all the additional information that is necessary for doing the cool things in post processing.

JPEG compression levels in Photoshop and Lightroom explained

Did you ever wonder what exactly those quality numbers mean when you export an image to a JPEG?

He was a good explanation and a few guidelines to shed some light on this question. It's all about a trade-off between file size and quality. If you go too high on the quality setting, you're going to waste space without increasing the quality of your images. If you go to low, you will introduce artifacts and reduce the image quality.

Check out this article to learn how to set the quality level correctly.

A graphics tablet for Photoshop and Lightroom on your iPad

Did you ever want to get a graphics tablet for your work in Lightroom or Photoshop? If you want to get a good one, it could cost you a few hundred bucks. A Wacom Cintiq that would let you draw right on the screen would be quite a bit more expensive.

Here's an alternative that only costs you about 20 bucks. Astropad is an iPad app the mirrors your screen and lets you use a stylus to operate directly on your images if you have a Mac.

A great lesson on creativity...

This is a great lesson on what it means to be creative. Creativity emerges when you're forced to think differently - when you are faced with a task and some unusual restrictions enforced upon you. That's when you have to leave your comfort zone to find a solution that you might otherwise not have considered. You’re being creative!

This video shows a great exercise to practice this. It shows what happens when a group of photographers is given a simple subject and the task I've never shooting the same image twice. So each photographer is forced to come up with a new idea when it's their turn to take a photo.

When was the last time you forced yourself to do something new?

Those were the alchemist days of photography

Aren't you glad that don't have to deal with all sorts of chemicals right on the spot when you take a photograph?

But I guess that's all a question of perspective. Michael Shindler puts it this way: "This process is really very, very simple. There are only about eight chemicals involved."

Noise Stacking - How to Shoot at High ISO Without the Noise
►  Read more at [ frb.li/fddf31 ]

Shooting with a high ISO sensitivity naturally creates noisy images. We all know that. And removing that noise in post-production is difficult and impacts image quality. But there is actually a way to reduce the noise greatly even in high-ISO images with very little impact on the details in your image. And this technique does not require any noise reduction software or plugins.

The trick that Andy Astbury shows you in this video is based on the idea that image noise is random. If you shoot multiple photos of the exact same scene, this allows Photoshop to even out the differences created by the noisy pixels and the pixels that are actually representing the color or brightness of the scene. Noise Reduction and Sharpening in Adobe Camera Raw
►  Read more at [ frb.li/fddo29 ]

Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) is the first stop in your raw workflow when you bring a raw image into Photoshop. Did you know that this little application has the exact same raw image editing features as its much bigger brother - Lightroom? If you are not already doing it, you should start using this power. One example where ACR can really serve you well is input sharpening and noise reduction.

In this video, I'll show you how to use ACR's noise reduction and sharpening capabilities to prepare an image before you bring it into Photoshop for more complex processing work.

How to Sharpen a Really Noisy Image
►  Read more at [ frb.li/fddf28 ]

Noise and sharpening, don't go together well. If you sharpen a noisy image, the noise is sharpened too, making it even noisier. And if you apply noise reduction first, the image gets very soft and loses all the details that you may want to sharpen. It takes a few Photoshop tricks to get around this problem.

In this video tutorial, a photographer by the name Gabriel F shares a very interesting technique. He sharpens a really noisy image by extracting the details (including the edges to be sharpened) into a separate layer. Then he reduces the noise on that details layer and sharpens it subsequently. When he overlays this layer on the image, the noise is untouched while the edges are sharpened.

The Art Of Sculpting Splashes by Alex Koloskov

Splash photography is a fascinating and very unusual genre. Chances are that you never really pick it up because there is so much expert knowledge involved with making splashes look stunning in a photo. Basically, you capture liquids in mid air by using a fast shutter speed and strobes or speedlights. But that's not even scratching the surface.

The shapes formed by liquids thrown into the air can be really beautiful and such liquid sculptures, frozen in time create stunning images. With the right post-processing techniques and a bit of creativity, you can shape your splash photos into liquid representations of objects or animals, which add to the wow factor.

However, creating such images is a technical challenge, and without expert knowledge like thatpr... more »

However, creating such images is a technical challenge, and without expert knowledge like that presented in this course it will take you ages to get it right. This course was created by one of the masters of this genre: Alex Koloskov. He shows you everything you need to know to create stunning splash photos: The gear, the setup, how to protect your gear from the liquids, which liquids work best, how to set the liquids in motion to get great images, how to post-process the images and much more.

How to Create a Perfect Selection of Clouds in Photoshop
►  Read more at [ frb.li/fddo20 ]

Creating a perfect selection of clouds in Photoshop can be a real challenge. They’re fuzzy and have no well defined edge in most cases. How do you create a good selection (or layer mask) in this case, for example, in order to process the blue sky and the white clouds differently?

In this video tutorial, I’ll show you a technique for achieving this. We will use Photoshop’s Channels panel to create a base mask. Then I will use the Brush tool in overlay mode to work on the mask and make the blue sky parts darker and the clouds brighter. Bit by bit, we will get a perfect mask that allows us to apply selective editing to the sky.

Being able to create precise selections of objects, even if they have fuzzy edges is of major importance in Photoshop. You're not only going to need this ability if you want to create a composite image (two or more images blended together). It's also super helpful for selective editing where you apply different adjustments to the different objects in your images.

No matter which method you're using to make your selections, the Refine Edge tool is your universal weapon for cleaning the edges of complex selections. However, when you open the tool for the first time, it may not be intuitive to use. In this article, I will show you how three Photoshop masters use Refine Edge in their Photoshop workflow.

In fact, texturing, when done right, can turn photos into beautiful art that would otherwise have ended up in your trash bin.

But as Nicole S. Young explains at the beginning of her book, not all photos lend themselves for being combined with a texture, and not all textures work with a given photo. Moreover, texturing a photo requires more work than just adding two images on top of each other and setting the blending mode in Photoshop.
