"Nostalgia in Time Square - the Immortal 1959 sessions" CHARLES MINGUS
For #turntabletuesday #vinyl #recordcollection #vinlyrecords
I'm a major fanatic for Mingus, he was the greatest composer in Jazz, meshing gospel, hard bop, freeform experimental/third stream, AND classical music in his work. Bandleader, double bass prodigy, poet and civil rights activist, he was known as "The Angry Man of Jazz" because of his temper ( One of the few musicians Duke Ellington ever fired personally for fistfights on stage. Once, when confronted with a nightclub audience talking and clinking ice in their glasses while he performed, Mingus stopped his band and loudly chastised the audience, stating "Isaac Stern doesn't have to put up with this shit." Mingus reportedly destroyed a $20,000 bass in response to audience heckling at New York's Five Spot) ... more »

Welcome vinyl fans, it's #turntabletuesday
Today I'd like to shine the spotlight the most famous and influential album artists of all time Roger Dean His art set the standard for Prog-rock covers (with many imitators), and his style influenced much heavy metal art and is also the basis for the whole look of the movie "AVATAR"
Though he primarily works with watercolour paints, many of his paintings make use of multiple media, including gouache, ink, enamel, crayon and collage (I love the swirly oil paint effects he creates). In addition to his cover paintings, Dean is respected for his calligraphic work, designing logos and titles to go with his paintings. Graduate of the Canterbury School of Art and the Royal College Of Art, a designer, architect and publisher, he has made many contributions to pop culture. The futuristic "retreat pod" chairs in... more »

An international cover art comparison for this week's #turntabletuesday
Stomu Yamash'ta & GO "GO TOO"
I have both the Japanese and U.S. versions of this album from one of the most interesting supergroups ever. Stomu Yamash'ta has an international reputation as a film score composer (Bowie's "The Man Who Fell To Earth" and the BBC's "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" ) and an Ambient & Jazz Keyboard/Percussionist. Born in Kyoto, Japan, and studied music at Kyoto University, Juilliard School of Music, and Berklee College of Music, and has also lectured in music. In 1972, he brought the Red Buddha Theatre company from Japan to Europe, acting as their director, producer and composer, writing and performing in the multi-media event "The Man From The East", with Morris Pert's (Brand X) Come To The Edge providing... more »

THE FACES "Ooh La La" 1973
Kinda wavered back and forth about what to post today, decided on this great example of an album design that's 'interactive' (in an old-school way) and really captures the personality of the band. Designed by Jim Ludwig- AGI It's a photo of "Gastone", a stage character of Ettore Petrolini, an Italian comedian of the 1920s. When you press the top of the cover down, the eyes roll and the mouth opens and closes ( a la Terry Gilliam/Monty Python).
This was the final album for the Faces, Rod Stewart left after this one. It's more of a team effort because he spent so little time on it, Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane really shine on this with producer Glyn Johns deserving much credit also. The title cut was the only song ever sung... more »

Yes I'd love to tour the Southland
In a traveling minstrel show
Yes I'm dying to be a star and make them laugh

Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
'Cause he looks so fine upon that hill
They tell me he was lonely, he's lonely still
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes? "

It's #turntabletuesday and it's time for some BLUES !!!
OTIS SPANN "Cryin' Time"
This is a ONE DOLLAR yard sale find that is one of my most-prized albums!
The cover art just cries blues music, and it's on Vanguard Records, so the sound is superior.
His mother played guitar for Memphis Minnie and Big Maceo Merriweather mentored him when he was 14 and living in Chicago alone after his Mom died. He joined the Muddy Waters band in '52, playing alongside Willie Dixon & Buddy Guy.
The house pianist for Chess Records for many years, he is famed as the king of the Chicago blues keyboard players and has literally played with everybody you can name in blues, from Big Mama Thornton, James Cotton, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley, Robert Lockwood, Luther Johnson, Eric Clapton, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, etc, etc.,... more »
