David Bowden37,155Its been awhile....For over three years I collected and shared an exclusive B&W circle. This circle "was" one of the most shared on G+ for awhile. I would share it once a month with everyone as a part of my personal desire to share more quality B&W images and photographers. The requirement for being in this circle was that the photographer shot at least 60% B&W images (I tend to shoot 80%).There are some excellent photographers and friends here. I encourage you to take a look at their work. While I know that bulk circle sharing is a thing of the past or no longer the norm on G+ (which is a shame) I wanted to re-share a collection of truly inspirational people. You wont be disappointed. Re-share if you like their work</david>2014-05-06 23:16:1649012223

Ellie Kennard19,414Sharing a Circle of Interactive Canadians with a Musician Friend Who is Crazy About CanadiansIf you received a notification of this, it is because you are included in this shared circle. +Toby Wilson lives in the UK but has frequently visited the East Coast of Canada with his partner in music/crime +Graham Breeze as Breeze and Wilson. Jeff Sullivan131,363Daily Photography Themes on G+: Curators Circle v1.0Daily photo themes can be a great way to share your best work, or to find creative work by others for enjoyment and inspiration.Lists of the daily themes, with notes on any participation details, are maintained by the following people:+Eric Leslie - http://ericleslie.com/guides/daily-photography-themes-googleplus/+Kol Tregaskes - http://bit.ly/kolgplusphotodailyhashtags+Ray Bilcliff - http://www.trueportraits.com/daily-photo-themes.htmJust Include the theme like today's #SelflessSunday in the text of your post, and others can find it in searches and you can enter that tag in the search box at the top of the page to find photos by other contributors.  However, that only works if many people using a theme are looking at (and commenting on) each others' posts.  On G+, like in so many areas in life, you get what you give.I've created two circles: one containing theme pages and this one containing theme curators.  Theme curators are among the most active photographers (or photography lovers) on G+, but if they're actively curating their theme, visiting most or all posts and interacting with many (comments, +1s, shares), they're also among the busiest, especially as the G+ community grows.  Keep your expectations of them reasonable and you won't be disappointed.  The golden rule, karma, "what goes around comes around"... take responsibility and be the interaction you want to see.  As people come to recognize your comments and posts, you'll get to know people and develop circles of community members to interact with on G+.This is intended to be a comprehensive, inclusive circle, so if I've missed a theme curator please let me know, thanks!2012-07-08 15:27:4433222730

I'm a major fanatic for Mingus, he was the greatest composer in Jazz, meshing gospel, hard bop, freeform experimental/third stream, AND classical music in his work. Bandleader, double bass prodigy, poet and civil rights activist, he was known as "The Angry Man of Jazz" because of his temper ( One of the few musicians Duke Ellington ever fired personally for fistfights on stage. Once, when confronted with a nightclub audience talking and clinking ice in their glasses while he performed, Mingus stopped his band and loudly chastised the audience, stating "Isaac Stern doesn't have to put up with this shit." Because of his brilliant writing for mid-size ensembles—and his catering to and emphasizing the strengths of the musicians in his groups—Mingus is often considered the heir of Duke Ellington, for whom he expressed great admiration.
This double LP re-issue contains some of his best period, with his legendary septet featuring; John Handy also sax Booker Ervin tenor sax Jimmie Knepper trombone Horace Parlan piano Danny Richmond drums Shafi Hadi also sax and Willie Dennis trombone.
By the mid-1970s, Mingus was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), a wastage of the musculature. His once formidable bass technique suffered, until he could no longer play the instrument. He continued composing, however, and supervised a number of recordings before his death. He never got to finish his last project in 1979, a collaboration with Joni Mitchell, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Jaco Pastorius. Joni had put words to his composition "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" among others, along with Mitchell originals and short, spoken word duets and home recordings of Mitchell and Mingus.
His ashes were scattered in the Ganges River.

The futuristic "retreat pod" chairs in "A CLOCKWORK ORANGE" were his creation, and since 1985 with the software company Psygnosis has done many video game covers, including Shadow of the Beast, Tetris Worlds as well as a redesign of the Tetris logo.
His long association with YES -creating their iconic "bubble" logo, and working with his brother Martyn Dean on their stage set designs is what he is most noted for. I've included a few Yes covers in this post, but mostly I wanted to to show off the rarer ones I have. GUN (1968) was his very first cover, and I have the RARE EARTH "One World" album (the record company thought the art "too weird" and against the band's strong objections, made it the inner cover, putting a cheesy band photo on the outside instead) The three GREENSLADE albums I have are probably my favourite designs of his, in art school I silkscreened one on to a t-shirt.
Three compilations of his work have been published, including Views (1975) (the success of which led him to form publishing house Paper Tiger Books), Magnetic Storm (1984), and Dragon's Dream (2008). In addition, his architectural and furniture work have been exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum and in the Royal Academy.

An international cover art comparison for this week's #turntabletuesday
Stomu Yamash'ta & GO "GO TOO"
I have both the Japanese and U.S. versions of this album from one of the most interesting supergroups ever. Stomu Yamash'ta has an international reputation as a film score composer (Bowie's "The Man Who Fell To Earth" and the BBC's "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" ) and an Ambient & Jazz Keyboard/Percussionist. Born in Kyoto, Japan, and studied music at Kyoto University, Juilliard School of Music, and Berklee College of Music, and has also lectured in music. In 1972, he brought the Red Buddha Theatre company from Japan to Europe, acting as their director, producer and composer, writing and performing in the multi-media event "The Man From The East", with Morris Pert's (Brand X) Come To The Edge providing... more »

THE FACES "Ooh La La" 1973
Kinda wavered back and forth about what to post today, decided on this great example of an album design that's 'interactive' (in an old-school way) and really captures the personality of the band. Designed by Jim Ludwig- AGI It's a photo of "Gastone", a stage character of Ettore Petrolini, an Italian comedian of the 1920s. When you press the top of the cover down, the eyes roll and the mouth opens and closes ( a la Terry Gilliam/Monty Python).
This was the final album for the Faces, Rod Stewart left after this one. It's more of a team effort because he spent so little time on it, Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane really shine on this with producer Glyn Johns deserving much credit also. The title cut was the only song ever sung... more »

The title cut was the only song ever sung by Ron Wood, and my favorite cut is the instrumental "Fly In The Ointment" that showcases the "liquored-up looseness" of their sound. Probably the best-known song is "Borstal Boys", a Faces live staple, and is obviously where The Black Crowes got their sound from!!

They sold more albums in 1970 than any other American rock band ( "Closer To Home" reached multi-platinum sales), largely due to their dynamic debut at the Atlanta Pop Festival in '69. They recorded and released three albums in 1970, and and scored a top ten hit with "I'm Your Captain" achieving headliner status immediately (in spite of the musical press's absolute hatred of them - some of the nastiest reviews I've ever read)
In 1971 they broke the Beatles attendance record by selling out Shea Stadium in only 72 hours, which they celebrated by stamping a picture of Shea on the back of this album. I always loved the unique and distinctive "coin" artwork of this LP, conceived by their svengali-like manager Terry Knight and created by CraigBraunInc
Today, the band still tours with Brewer & Schacher, Max Carl (38 Special) on vocals, Bruce Kulick (Kiss) on guitar, and Tim Cashion on keyboards. Mark Farner records and performs with his own band NRG.
Side note- one of the band's proudest achievements is being Homer Simpson's fave band, getting mentions in at least three different episodes, and having their biggest hit We're An American Band played twice on the show!!

For #welovemusicwednesday and my music friends and supporters....

Here you go, one of my more elaborate pieces for large ensemble as requested ;). The score is pretty wild and some parts are physically unplayable. If it were to ever be recorded I would have to do a LOT of editing. This is again. NOT a live recording but a simulation using my sound library.

"Mod II" This is the 2nd movement from a large 4 movement work. Best to be heard with earphones or good speakers, my sound production quality isn't up to where I would like it to be.

For #turntabletuesday 's Electronica/Trance theme
Robert Fripp & Brian Eno No Pussyfooting
This 1973 album is cool on many levels, it is one of the first recordings using King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp's FRIPPERTRONICS which consisted of two modified reel-to-reels. He would play a guitar note into them and it would repeat, and then he'd layer more notes, building up a wall of sound. The earlier notes would gradually fade away, and change their tonal quality because of the analog tape. On this album, Eno ran the tape decks through his electronics, taking the music further out into the stratosphere (he did this on quite a few of his ex-Roxy Music cohort Phil Manzanera's albums too, and on his own recordings he referred to it as Sky-Saw Guitar ).

Each side has one piece of music on it. One side was done in Eno's studio, the other was done in Fripp's. When records were in their infancy, musicians referred to 'cutting a side'- you had to record one side at a time, there was no stopping or overdubbing, if you made a mistake, you had to start all over. I love that Fripp/Eno treated this album like two distinct compositions, sort of a "yin & yang", if you will. That's a concept that has been lost with CDs and MP3 players.
The very eye-catching album design & photography was done by Willie Christie a style that was emulated by many electronica artists influenced by these two fathers of the genre..

For #turntabletuesday
THE RESIDENTS "Commercial Album"
I live in a small hick town, and opportunities to hear cutting edge avant-garde/experimental music are non-existent. I read a magazine article about this new group whose name came from a record label rejection letter addressed to "The residents of ... their street address " and it also mentioned they recorded with Fred Frith (I was already familiar with 'Henry Cow' & 'The Art Bears' ) so I figured, that's good enough for me. I sent off (the unheard of price for 1980) $25 U.S. to the hilarious-sounding RALPH RECORDS in San Francisco with my fingers crossed, having had bad luck with mail order before (I chose their "Commercial Album", thinking that would be the most accessible, right ?).

When it arrived and I opened the package, my first reaction was 'how the hell did they get "40 songs on one record?" and "Is that John Travolta and Barbara Streisand ?"
Started to listen to it, and it was..........odd, to say the least. Throbbing atonal beats, ethereal metallic melodies, and nonsensical lyrics, more spoken than sung. And all the songs were only ONE MINUTE long ?!!! Are they pulling my leg ? Thought I had been hosed, and stuck it on the top shelf. I would play it when friends came over, to get their reactions, and no-one liked it, but SURPRISE ! The more I played it, the music began to grow on me, and I started to grasp what they were doing. Their composing style was about getting an idea across using the simplest elements possible, shifting musical scales into a different dimension, and using words for the sound of the syllables, rather than trying to say anything. Once this door opened for me, I began to look at all music in a slightly off-kilter way, and I became a huge fan of theirs, and now own quite a number of their records. I've seen them perform twice, lucky enough to have caught them on their 13th anniversary tour with the incomparable Snakefinger (R.I.P.) on guitar. Another show I was fortunate to see was their Elvis tribute "Cube-E " Remembering that, and after seeing +Ron Marsh's great picture disc collection, I've also included in this post the 13th anniversary re-release of their first album on picture disc for your enjoyment.
Can't pick just one video, they're all so cool, so here's their channel

The album art I'd like to share today for #turntabletuesday is the Mahavishnu Orchestra "Between Nothingness & Eternity" Live in Central Park album, with the original lineup of Mahavishnu John Mclaughlin, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, Rick Laird, and Billy Cobham. This album really demonstrates how incendiary their early performances were, and defined Fusion Jazz-rock for years afterward. Each musician went on to front bands of their own and spawned many imitators.
The very stunning photography and design for this cover was done by Ashok & Pranavananda (designed many covers for Mahavishnu, and a few Santana ones as well ) except for the inner "Star Cluster" foldout art by Helmut Wimmer (courtesy of The American Museum/Hayden Planetarium) and contained an excerpt of the poem "My Flute" by SRI CHINMOY (John McLaughlin's swami)

+shane holsclaw and I had a discussion about N.Y. night skyline album covers the other day, and this album came to mind, so I thought everyone would enjoy this beautiful package. If you'd like to hear a taste;
