On the geek side you have the technical details like f-stops, shutter speeds, lens and gear. On the artistry side things are a little tougher to define: shape, color, composition, mood, balance and light.  Most photographers tend to lean towards one direction or the other, but it's important to achieve a balance to create beautiful images, especially when photographing nature._ _This webinar will focus on the many elements that make up the composition of a beautiful nature image, using hundreds of examples and practical, real world situations.  You'll learn the “rules” of composition as well as when and why to break them.  You'll find out how to find the picture, and how to work a subject to maximize the potential of every situation.  In addition, we will cover how to control such things as lighting, backgrounds, depth of field, and perspective to enhance the composition._Webinar - Composing Images in a Natural World2013-08-30 02:00:0013

Drink And Click™ SF531Hey you gorgeous Drinkers and Clickers! Mark your calendars! This month's D&C SF get-together is in JAPANTOWN! The 5th annual J-Pop Summit Festival is happening July 27 and 28, and is a celebration of music, fine arts, fashion, film, and cuisine influenced by Japanese pop culture. As a Drink and Click chapter, it's only fitting we shoot the Festival's opening ceremony, the sake barrel breaking, to kick off the day! After the ceremony, we'll make our way west down Post Street, ending up at the food vendor area at Post and Fillmore.  We'll meet up at the Peace Plaza on Geary by the large monument at 1030am to be ready for the 11am ceremony start. There will be lots going on, so your fearless leaders @106719979779567208605, @117741745713138927677, and @101491514263283809757 will post an exact location once we've set up shop. For those of you who were at our June Pride SF event, you know how tricky it was to keep track of where the group was in the constant neon rainbow blur. This event is also going to draw lots of people, but it's only spread over 2 or 3 blocks, so it'll be easier to connect. We'll update the event comments with where we are each time we move to another area. @108189587050871927619 - there will be concert performances, you might be interested to know... There will be PLENTY of varied and interesting subject matter to shoot, so feel free to go wander off and reconnect if you see something that captures your shutter's fancy. >Here's a link to the festival schedule, in case you'd like to plan your shooting priorities: http://www.j-pop.com/2013/schedule/ Other than the opening ceremony, there is no particular event we're going to target, we'll just slowly move from sight to sight. >Here's a link to the overall website with directions, parking, history, etc. about the festival: http://www.j-pop.com/2013/  Mega bonus points and possibly a **prize** for those who come in costume. "Harajuku" and "cosplay" are handy search terms when designing your outfit, might also want to check out the Fashion section of the festival's website for inspiration  ;) Invite your friends! SmugMug46,984June 27, 2013 8:00 PM ET http://bit.ly/11HkPgT _Random treats given away to webinar participants include a 11X14 Thin Wrap from @106529163584350033627, $50 credit from SmugMug as well as a credit from EZ Prints_ Despite the growing number of same-sex weddings in the US, portrait photography remains largely limited to working with heterosexual couples. The time has come for photographers to understand that not all engagement and wedding photos are made the same. Now that marriage equality is recognized in twelve states and the District of Columbia, professional photographers should be asking: What does it take to be a successful pro in the same-sex market, and are you prepared to pose a same-sex couple in a way that properly communicates a message of love and intimacy? What more do you need to know to communicate that preparedness to prospective clients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LBGT)? Join the authors of the groundbreaking new book, Capturing Love: The Art of Lesbian & Gay Wedding Photography (which was recently featured in the June issue of Rangefinder Magazine), for this essential skill-based webinar about best practices for photographing same sex couples in a rapidly shifting legal landscape. Though an advance purchase and review of Capturing Love is not required for this seminar, it is recommended to support the discussion. SmugMug46,984Have you ever wondered how to get your photos picked up by ad agencies? How does a photographer get their foot in the door? These are questions many of us have thought about before, since photography (and ads) are everywhere we look. Well, SmugMug Pro @114056084994793924628 helped answer some of those question during a recent SmugMug podcast (bit.ly/ZsDwsb). But, we found, that the interest in this subject is off the charts, and the follow up questions for Alan have been coming in fast and furious. So Alan has volunteered to spend an hour answering nothing but your questions in a live, On Air Google Hangout!  _Join SmugMug's Rocky Bowels and Michael Bonocore as they ask your questions to Alan Tuesday, June 11th at 9:00PM EST._ Have a question you would like us to ask Alan? Simply add it as a comment here, on this event. Alan will also do his best to respond to any questions we do not ask during the broadcast, right here in the Google+ event. So make sure to RSVP, and post your best question for Alan. We will even be giving away a year of SmugMug Portfolio to one lucky person who asks a question before the end of the live hangout.  And yes, this will be recorded to view on our YouTube channel.  #Photography #Advertising #Commercial #SmugMug #SmugMugProWhat Ad Agencies Want From You - Interested in Fashion or Commercial Photography?2013-06-12 03:00:0076

Scott Jarvie440,675MAP AND DETAILS - http://goo.gl/maps/nCKos FESTIVAL OF COLORS The main portion of this photowalk is centered around the Saturday and Sunday Holi festival in Spanish fork Utah known as the Festival of Colors. Where tens of thousands of people throw around colored dust/powder/corn starch SATURDAY SUNDAY we spend most of the day enjoying the crowds and usually have our own area to chill away from the crowds in a safer cleaner area to group together. Check out the hashtag #jarviewalk  to see many of the images from last year that'll tell most all of the story. We also do Dinners both nights though understandably many people may leave on Sunday. I suggest you at least come for Friday and Saturday Details about the actual event organized by the Krishnas here: http://utahkrishnas.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=100:holi-festival-of-colors&catid=52:festivals&Itemid=471 $3 entry... can you handle that? ;) FRIDAY Friday I lead an all day seperate event that goes something like this: Sunrise in the Mountains Breakfast as a group Mid-day shooting Lunch  Downtown SLC for Sunset or nearbye landscape spot FYI Look for places to stay in the Provo area as that is where we will have our center of operations this year it's the nearest bigger city to Spanish Fork People went in on a big house last year, I'm guessing it could happen again. You can make plans in the comments. LONGER? If you plan on coming early or staying later say so in the comments and some people will be doing some other smaller get togethers. Including perhaps southern Utah. The more time you plan out for the trip the better.  I may plan more things for that week and I'll announce it later. I just wanted to make the event for now.Festival of Colors - Utah JarvieWalk 20132013-03-29 06:00:0080

Drink And Click™ SF531Hey Drinkers and Clickers! This month's chapter-wide Drink and Click challenge is "Strangers in a Bar" (be sure to RSVP here: https://plus.google.com/events/c9drj349qqhfeojj295k101amos?gl=us&hl=en), so to make sure the SF chapter has the opportunity to go up against literally the rest of the world, we're on a mission to the bars of the Mission! Most of the photography will be indoors, in the style of the month's challenge. Maybe @108189587050871927619 will bring his sweet lighting setup again! Those who were looking forward to shooting some sweet cityscape views at Potrero Hill, don't worry, @115840240080499728411 will head there in March. The bars we're hitting Thursday each have a quirky, individual feel to them, and all have musical character, so get ready to get down, get funky, and get your groove on! Or at least take photos of other people who are! Most of the live music starts a little later, so depending on how late you stay out you may catch a performance or two. Approximate Schedule: 6:30: we'll set the mood at the Elbo Room (647 Valencia St) 7:30: we'll migrate south to Amnesia Bar (853 Valencia St) 8:30: we'll close the night at Benders Bar (806 South Van Ness Ave)  Check this event page for updates on where we are! Or message @101491514263283809757, @117741745713138927677, or @106719979779567208605 directly to meet up with us along the way. This is a Thursday, so since most of us have to be up early on Friday, it'll be a little lower key than January's [awesome] event. All the same, we can still get a couple of hours of good clean fun in before everyone retires to their weeknight routines. :) Hope to see you there!! *Note:* Many D&C regulars do not imbibe, so don't feel you have to in order to participate. The only requirement to be part of this group and these events is a love of photography, whatever your skill level and beverage preference :) Drink and Click SF February Event!2013-02-21 18:30:0047

1,502,298I recently announced that my brand new +SmugMug portfolio site went live (http://portfolio.brianmatiash.com) and that prints are now available for sale! We had so much fun with the announce that I wanted to continue the good times today. With Valentine's Day in full swing, what better way is there to show yourself how much you love YOU than by winning a 1 YEAR Membership with SmugMug? :) Before we get to the contest details, I want to share a crazy deal that any _new customer_ can take advantage of - SmugMug has been extremely generous and is letting me offer a *25% discount* off of *any* of their four tiered membership packages. To get in on this deal, just use the coupon code *BMASH* when you set up your new account. That is a ridiculously good deal and like all good deals, it expires on _Feb 23, 2013 at the stroke of 11:59PM Pacific/US._ Now onto the contest details - which are very straightforward. I want to you to share your *one, single* image that you think would benefit most from having its own SmugMug Gallery. Just share your image right here in this event and tag it with #SmugMash . *Now, creativity and strength of vision count here!* If you want to share a little ditty about what makes this image so important to you and why you'd want to share it on your own SmugMug gallery, be sure to include that. The contest will run for one week, ending next *Thursday, February 21st at 11:59AM Pacific/US time*. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. The first place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Business* membership. The second place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Portfolio* membership. Finally, the third place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Power* membership. If you're already an existing SmugMug member (good for you!) and you win, you will be upgraded to the respective tier that you placed in or if you placed in the tier that you are currently a member of, SmugMug will extend your account by 1 year. Please tag your comments and/or posts with #SmugMash  to make aggregating the entries easier! So who will be judging this contest? Aside from me, I am so excited to have three amazing SmugMug friends helping out. First, we have _the_ go-to person for all of SmugMug's friends, the lovely and insanely sweet +Katherine Cheng. Next up is SmugMug's social butterfly, loyal father of Rocky the Dog, and the harvester of  #Bonocorns far and wide, +Michael Bonocore. Finally, the co-founder of SmugMug, crazy lover of hanging gigantic prints of jaw-dropping images, and the generally huggable +Chris MacAskill.  One more thing - if you're a new customer who takes advantage of the 25% discount code ( *BMASH* ) today AND ends up winning one of the prizes, SmugMug will automatically tack on another year to your new account. Pretty, pretty, pretty sweet if you ask me. So that's that. I hope you all have fun with this contest. We can't wait to see the amazing work that you guys 'n gals posWin some LOVE! Well… some SmugMug LOVE!2013-02-15 00:00:00131
Drink And Click™ SF531This Friday we're bar crawling it up in North Beach!  AND we have two bar sponsors!  Whaaaat?! 1st, we'll meet up at 6:00p at *Tope* (1326 Grant Ave) to get a nice, inspirational buzz going.  Our discount pimps $3 draft beers and well drinks for D&C'ers. From there we'll head south on Columbus to our 2nd stop, an unusual and interesting bar called *Specs* (12 Saroyan Place) for additional liquid encouragement and to toast any late arrivals.  Finally, we'll crawl back up Columbus to *The Boardroom* (1609 Powell St) for more libations to truly drive home the point of it being a Friday evening.  Also, the owner (same guy who owns Tope) is giving us *$3 drafts and well drinks, $5 nachos, and 1/2 priced burgers (comes with sides), corn dogs and wings!!*  I've heard the food here are amazing, so bring your appetite! **An additional note** about The Boardroom: they are big into sports photography, and are hosting a rotating photo gallery where customers can and do buy the prints they display.  The owner is looking to chat to any of us who want to display their work there! Drink And Click™ SF531Allright, not only is this the September #DrinkAndClickSF event, but it is also the "Birthday Hangover" party for @105502659434999281505 @103914809547503560483 and Myself (@106719979779567208605) who all share the most holy of birthdays, September 19th.  What makes a #DrinkAndClick successful? Well of course, the photographers and friends who attend. But BESIDES that, it is great bars, great pub grub, and crazy street characters. @107625658878407076244 identified the perfect location for that this month. The home of the Grateful Dead, and some of the most colorful characters this city has to offer, Haight Street! So we will be meeting at the legendary Kezar Pub between 5:00PM and 6:30PM. http://plus.google.com/106808013026678003045 From there we will walk right across the street for some Golden Hour photos in Golden Gate park. I can almost guarantee a hacky sack game will be happening.  About 7:00PM, we will begin our walk up the legendary Haight Street, stopping at 2 pubs (to be named later), and aiming to end up at Buena Vista Park at 9:00 PM. Make sure to bring your tripods, as on a clear night, you can get some amazing photos of the Golden Gate Bridge and Downtown San Francisco.  From there, it is a free for all of drinking and clicking. We are having #DrinkAndClick chapter wide challenges this month! Please attend this event to be included in the challenges.  https://plus.google.com/events/ccqtjh576u9vfapvhs5b5ulaim4  Hope to see you there!Drink And Click SF - September2012-09-20 17:00:00132

Brian B. Sørensen31,235*Reno Hot Air Balloon Race & Camel Race in Virginia City, NV* We have *another* exciting weekend coming up in September. The second weekend of September has the largest Hot Air Balloon event in USA with more than 100 balloons going up. They have dawn patrol that starts at 5am where the balloons  light up before dawn, goes into the air and does "twinkles" (turning light on and off). Some of us saw this at the Sonoma Event in Winsor, CA earlier this year and it was amazing to see. I will probably attend both Saturday morning as well as Sunday morning and then head back around noon or so. Later in the day Saturday the 8th we can go to the Camel Race in Virginia City, NV around 40 minutes south of Reno to watch international jockeys race on camels, emu's etc (I am not making this up, it's on their website). Please note that you need to get a ticket for this event. I already bought mine for Saturday the 8th. Thanks to @100046418043149960706 for suggesting this. And yes @111346257562521323252, apparently you can ride your own camel, details on their website :D  Reno Hot Air Balloon Event Website: http://www.renoballoon.com/ Address: 1595 N. I love this story so much. Carla Munro tells us about the time she learned how to fly...in a World War II biplane...over Lake Wanaka New Zealand. She tells the story so well, you can actually SEE her smiling while she typed it up. Add insanely beautiful photos from Johan Lolos and you have just another of the already long list of reasons to visit Lake Wanaka.

So with my upcoming trip to #Cuba (the land of no internet) quickly approaching, I hired an awesome new member of the Resource Travel team, Genevieve Hassall from The Wanderbug. You would think for her first installment of ‪#‎ResourceTravel‬ Instagram Photos of the Week she would select one of mine...but, nope. No. She. Didn't.

You got some explaining to do Genevieve...while we are all waiting for an explanation, check out this week selections!

So excited to head to Cuba in just 6 days with +The Giving Lens!  And I am so inspired after seeing the incredible work of Robert Whitman in this mini-documentary film. The way he documents the people, the motion and liveliness of Cuba in his photographs is amazing. I love how he excludes faces in a lot of his photos.

I have photographed some pretty cool wildlife in my career, but nothing quite as cool looking as a Muskox. Watch this beautiful film of this mythical looking creature living in a habitat that appears to resemble the ice age.

So cool. Who wants to go photograph these guys with me this year?

I first saw this film weeks ago when I visited my friends at +SmugMug and I have been chomping at the bit since then to get this article out. This film is beyond incredible, and contains some of the most compelling visuals I have ever seen. I sat down for an interview with filmmaker Anton Lorimer to discuss his fears with this dangerous project, how his use of drones has added priceless production value, and what is next for himself and SmugMug Films.

Amazing work Anton and everyone at SmugMug!

I first learned of Taylor Gray from my buddy +Toby Harriman and was completely blown away by his talent. Then, I found out he was only 17 years old. It's amazing to see how talented the next generation of photographers and filmmakers are and I love following their adventures as they improve their craft.

Taylor is also a hell of a writer, and wrote an article for Resource Travel telling us about how his young age and his future of travel, adventure, and photography inspire him to get out of the house and keep creating incredible art.

It's amazing to see how talented the next generation of photographers and filmmakers are and I love following their adventures as they improve their craft.

Really excited about my latest article on Resource Travel, "5 Reasons Why Every Photographer Should Travel to Wadi Rum, Jordan". Give it a read

I have been fortunate enough to visit Wadi Rum twice now, both times while leading trips for The Giving Lens. I have seen awesome sunsets, camped under a million stars, met my habibi, Shaban Radwan, and gotten incredible photos all along the way. Take a look at why I think you need to charge your camera batteries and start planning a trip to Wadi Rum today!

Mike Olbinski is a beast. This is the most insane storm film you will ever see. Stop what you are doing right now and watch this insanity. I know where I am going next summer...to chase the monsoon in Arizona with Mike.

Thanks for the interview and the 18 additional photos Mike!!

I thought my views of San Francisco during the +500px Global Photowalk were good...but this raises the bar on photowalk locations. Next year, Antarctica for the 500px Global Photowalk 2016!

Thanks for the photos Kira Morris and the awesome team at McMurdo Research Station!

Brendan van Son recently traveled to the Galapagos Islands as part of the Feel Again Project with the +✈Visit Ecuador and its Galapagos Islands

His photos captured a tranquil island inhabited by some of the most beautiful wild animals in the world. As Van Son stated, "One of the most amazing parts about the Galapagos Islands is that it seems like the only place in the world you can get so close to the animals without being behind a fence or enclose"

Photographers rushed out in droves to photograph the rare Blood Moon last night. While most images shared on social media were heavily edited composites (no, ET was not on a bike in front of the Blood Moon), there was some excellent shots that required very little editing.

We will still be adding to this gallery all week, so if you have an image you feel is worthy of being added, please share it in the comments! Photos must have a foreground element to be considered.

The team at AURORA skycam was the first company to get their hands on the yet to be released Canon ME20F-SH, a $30,000 video camera capable of capturing video at ISO 4 Million. Of course, what better place to put this impressive camera to the test than Arctic Norway during the Northern Lights season. Check out the impressive film and Behind The Scenes photos on +Resource Travel

There is is so much epicness on the internet, it's incredible. Today's dose is brought to us by Mike Olbinski. Ride shotgun as his latest film takes us storm chasing through 10 states in 14 days. This film is so sick, it made Vimeo Staff Pick in just a couple of hours. If this doesn't get your heart racing, I don't know what will

Stop what you are doing and watch my buddy +Brian Rueb win the internet today.

When Brian saw +Mark Gvazdinskas capture a wedding on a glacier in Denali National Park and Preserve, Rueb thought he could do more epic. So he conquered his fear of heights and hiked 16 miles round trip and 9000 feet of elevation changes to capture a wedding in one of the most amazing places on the planet, Half Dome in Yosemite National Park...all while crying and wetting his underoos. Read Brian's hilarious story on Resource Travel!

EPIC BRIAN!!!!!!

I am really excited to launch a new series on Resource Travel called "Travel. Photography. Inspiration." It will tell the stories of travel photographers and filmmakers, in their own words. It will tell us what drives them to inspire us all with their incredible stories. Even more important, it will tell us what inspires THEM to brave extreme temperatures and dangerous situations to create the visual stories that they are proud of. I have some incredible artists already contributing, and even more by the day...I can't wait to share their inspiration with all of you.

So I thought I would start it off about what inspires me. I thought long and hard about this piece (over a month in the making) and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, my work with The Giving Lens and children around the world continues to inspire me day in and day out. Please give it a read and let me know what you think. This piece means a lot to me, and I am so excited to continue to bring you the stories of some of the world's most inspirational travel photographers and filmmakers.___
