On the geek side you have the technical details like f-stops, shutter speeds, lens and gear. On the artistry side things are a little tougher to define: shape, color, composition, mood, balance and light.  Most photographers tend to lean towards one direction or the other, but it's important to achieve a balance to create beautiful images, especially when photographing nature._ _This webinar will focus on the many elements that make up the composition of a beautiful nature image, using hundreds of examples and practical, real world situations.  You'll learn the “rules” of composition as well as when and why to break them.  You'll find out how to find the picture, and how to work a subject to maximize the potential of every situation.  In addition, we will cover how to control such things as lighting, backgrounds, depth of field, and perspective to enhance the composition._Webinar - Composing Images in a Natural World2013-08-30 02:00:0013

The time has come for photographers to understand that not all engagement and wedding photos are made the same. Now that marriage equality is recognized in twelve states and the District of Columbia, professional photographers should be asking: What does it take to be a successful pro in the same-sex market, and are you prepared to pose a same-sex couple in a way that properly communicates a message of love and intimacy? What more do you need to know to communicate that preparedness to prospective clients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LBGT)? Join the authors of the groundbreaking new book, Capturing Love: The Art of Lesbian & Gay Wedding Photography (which was recently featured in the June issue of Rangefinder Magazine), for this essential skill-based webinar about best practices for photographing same sex couples in a rapidly shifting legal landscape. Though an advance purchase and review of Capturing Love is not required for this seminar, it is recommended to support the discussion. SmugMug47,123Have you ever wondered how to get your photos picked up by ad agencies? How does a photographer get their foot in the door? These are questions many of us have thought about before, since photography (and ads) are everywhere we look. Well, SmugMug Pro @114056084994793924628 helped answer some of those question during a recent SmugMug podcast (bit.ly/ZsDwsb). So Alan has volunteered to spend an hour answering nothing but your questions in a live, On Air Google Hangout!  _Join SmugMug's Rocky Bowels and Michael Bonocore as they ask your questions to Alan Tuesday, June 11th at 9:00PM EST._ Have a question you would like us to ask Alan? Scott Jarvie443,925MAP AND DETAILS - http://goo.gl/maps/nCKos FESTIVAL OF COLORS The main portion of this photowalk is centered around the Saturday and Sunday Holi festival in Spanish fork Utah known as the Festival of Colors. Where tens of thousands of people throw around colored dust/powder/corn starch SATURDAY SUNDAY we spend most of the day enjoying the crowds and usually have our own area to chill away from the crowds in a safer cleaner area to group together. Check out the hashtag #jarviewalk  to see many of the images from last year that'll tell most all of the story. We also do Dinners both nights though understandably many people may leave on Sunday. I suggest you at least come for Friday and Saturday Details about the actual event organized by the Krishnas here: http://utahkrishnas.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=100:holi-festival-of-colors&catid=52:festivals&Itemid=471 $3 entry... can you handle that? ;) FRIDAY Friday I lead an all day seperate event that goes something like this: Sunrise in the Mountains Breakfast as a group Mid-day shooting Lunch  Downtown SLC for Sunset or nearbye landscape spot FYI Look for places to stay in the Provo area as that is where we will have our center of operations this year it's the nearest bigger city to Spanish Fork People went in on a big house last year, I'm guessing it could happen again. You can make plans in the comments. LONGER? If you plan on coming early or staying later say so in the comments and some people will be doing some other smaller get togethers. Including perhaps southern Utah. The more time you plan out for the trip the better.  I may plan more things for that week and I'll announce it later. I just wanted to make the event for now.Festival of Colors - Utah JarvieWalk 20132013-03-29 06:00:0080

Brian Matiash1,503,719I recently announced that my brand new +SmugMug portfolio site went live (http://portfolio.brianmatiash.com) and that prints are now available for sale! We had so much fun with the announce that I wanted to continue the good times today. With Valentine's Day in full swing, what better way is there to show yourself how much you love YOU than by winning a 1 YEAR Membership with SmugMug? :) Before we get to the contest details, I want to share a crazy deal that any _new customer_ can take advantage of - SmugMug has been extremely generous and is letting me offer a *25% discount* off of *any* of their four tiered membership packages. To get in on this deal, just use the coupon code *BMASH* when you set up your new account. That is a ridiculously good deal and like all good deals, it expires on _Feb 23, 2013 at the stroke of 11:59PM Pacific/US._ Now onto the contest details - which are very straightforward. I want to you to share your *one, single* image that you think would benefit most from having its own SmugMug Gallery. Just share your image right here in this event and tag it with #SmugMash . *Now, creativity and strength of vision count here!* If you want to share a little ditty about what makes this image so important to you and why you'd want to share it on your own SmugMug gallery, be sure to include that. The contest will run for one week, ending next *Thursday, February 21st at 11:59AM Pacific/US time*. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. The first place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Business* membership. The second place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Portfolio* membership. Finally, the third place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Power* membership. If you're already an existing SmugMug member (good for you!) and you win, you will be upgraded to the respective tier that you placed in or if you placed in the tier that you are currently a member of, SmugMug will extend your account by 1 year. Please tag your comments and/or posts with #SmugMash  to make aggregating the entries easier! So who will be judging this contest? Aside from me, I am so excited to have three amazing SmugMug friends helping out. First, we have _the_ go-to person for all of SmugMug's friends, the lovely and insanely sweet +Katherine Cheng. Next up is SmugMug's social butterfly, loyal father of Rocky the Dog, and the harvester of  #Bonocorns far and wide, +Michael Bonocore. Finally, the co-founder of SmugMug, crazy lover of hanging gigantic prints of jaw-dropping images, and the generally huggable +Chris MacAskill.  One more thing - if you're a new customer who takes advantage of the 25% discount code ( *BMASH* ) today AND ends up winning one of the prizes, SmugMug will automatically tack on another year to your new account. Pretty, pretty, pretty sweet if you ask me. So that's that. I hope you all have fun with this contest. We can't wait to see the amazing work that you guys 'n gals posWin some LOVE! Well… some SmugMug LOVE!2013-02-15 00:00:00131

Brian B. Sørensen31,150*Reno Hot Air Balloon Race & Camel Race in Virginia City, NV* We have *another* exciting weekend coming up in September. The second weekend of September has the largest Hot Air Balloon event in USA with more than 100 balloons going up. They have dawn patrol that starts at 5am where the balloons  light up before dawn, goes into the air and does "twinkles" (turning light on and off). Some of us saw this at the Sonoma Event in Winsor, CA earlier this year and it was amazing to see. I will probably attend both Saturday morning as well as Sunday morning and then head back around noon or so. Later in the day Saturday the 8th we can go to the Camel Race in Virginia City, NV around 40 minutes south of Reno to watch international jockeys race on camels, emu's etc (I am not making this up, it's on their website). Please note that you need to get a ticket for this event. I already bought mine for Saturday the 8th. Thanks to @100046418043149960706 for suggesting this. And yes @111346257562521323252, apparently you can ride your own camel, details on their website :D  Reno Hot Air Balloon Event Website: http://www.renoballoon.com/ Address: 1595 N. Michael Bonocore400,708Allright, Somehow @102476152658204495450 and @107430862196617669986 decided that since I like to drink (and click) so much, I should head the San Francisco chapter of   #DrinkAndClick . Well, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!! The second installment of   #DrinkAndClickSF  will be held next Thursday, June 28. Since we have some special Googlers in from out of town (@106015180204607019928   and @108147330019211554976 ) we will meeting at 5:30 PM at Red's Java House on the Embarcadero. What better way to show off our amazing city and spend a beautiful Thursday afternoon than under them SF iconic landmark, the Bay Bridge? From there, we will drink and click down the waterfront, eventually making our way towards AT&T Park. The Giants are hosting the Cincinnati Reds that evening, so there should be a lively atmosphere, with plenty of street photography to mix in with the usual Bay Bridge and Waterfront photos.  There will be free schwag, drink specials, photography talk, friendships being born, friendships being ended, and a plethora of fun photos that you will most likely regret in the morning. *You do NOT need to Drink to be a part of the #DrinkAndClick . Beer, Whiskey, or Water, the goal is to have fun with fellow photographers....so no pressure!* There will also be a photo contest in the week following the event in which we will give out AWESOME prizes to the best photo in each designated category. Categories to be announced shortly.  So drink, click, and be merry! *PLEASE RSVP VIA COMMENT IN THIS POST!*  I will add you to the   #DrinkAndClickSF circle to keep you in the loop of information regarding this adventure and future monthly #DrinkAndClickSF   #DrinkAndClick   #SanFrancisco   #PhotoWalk   #Photography   #BayArea     #California  Drink And Click SF!2012-06-28 17:30:0017

It was fun going through my images from The Giving Lens trip to Tanzania to include in the piece "50 Photos That Will Inspire You to Travel to Tanzania Right Now"

Give it a look on Resource Travel and book that plane ticket!

Here is a moment that caught us off guard, but I was happy I had my camera at the ready. These zebras were spooked by something and came barelling out of the river.

This video is so damn cool. If you always wondered what it felt like to be in the cockpit of a U.S. Navy Blue Angels F/A-18 Hornet as they flew within inches of each other, stop what you are doing and watch this insane 360° video on Resource Travel.

Super excited to launch the Resource Travel & Tamron Lenses "Show Us Your World" photo contest! As most people know, I love to obsess over other people's travel images, so when Tamron offered to give away a new lens, we figured it would be fun to host a travel photo contest. You are able to submit two photos into the contest, and the winner gets to have their choice of one of six Tamron Lenses. So what are you waiting for? And please feel free to let your friends know!
I wish I could enter frown emoticon That 15-30 is pretty insanely incredible.

As many of you know, I am passionate about my travels, my photography, my position at Resource Travel. But none of that compares to the passion and pride I have for my work with The Giving Lens. I thought it was about time to share some of our team's photos from over the years, and what better place to start than Tanzania. Seriously, look at these photos. Absolutely incredible shots. With or without The Giving Lens, if this doesn't make you itch for an African adventure, I don't know what will! Applications are open for our return to Tanzania this August! Apply at http://thegivinglens.com/workshops/tgl-tanzania/

You may remember that time when Benjamin Wong put models doing everyday tasks in front of insane approaching storms, all to bring awareness to the effects that climate change is having on our everyday lives. Well, Anna Tenne gave Resource Travel a great behind-the-scenes look at what went into the planning. She also provides interesting photos to show the frantic action behind the photos, as the team only had 10-15 minutes to set up lighting, props, and models, get the shot, then break it all down before the storm would overtake them.
Fascinating story. Great work Anna, Benjamin, Kelly DeLay and Pat Black!

I am very proud of this piece. Every day that I was in Cuba, I realized that the story I wanted to tell wasn't the classic cars or the dramatic buildings, but rather, the wonderful, friendly, and welcoming people of Cuba. They really are some of the most incredible people I have ever met. Please read it and check out the photos and let me know what you think!

Big thank you to Tamron Lenses for your support on this project and to Alain Lázaro Gutiérrez Almeida for being the most awesome wingman possible.

Some people knew, most people didn't. But as of this week, I am no longer a California resident. Find out why I made my new home in the incredible state of Idaho. And feel free to come visit!

Boise decided to welcome me by putting on a crazy awesome five day Music festival, Treefort Music Fest, so if you need me, I will be drinking craft beer and listening to a thousand sweet bands.

Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park is one of the most awe-inspiring sites to be seen in any U.S. Department of the Interior National Park, and photographer Taylor Gray takes us through his recent quest to get the shot. Gray told us about the crowds and frustrations, but in the end, was more than worth it.
There is still a couple of days left to witness this spectacle, so Gray also provided us with his top 5 tips for how to get the most out of your Yosemite Firefall adventure.

While art and outdoor conservationists around the world celebrated famed American Landscape Photographer Ansel Adams' birthday on February 20th by publishing photos of Yosemite on social media sites, many don’t realize that Adams also documented one of the most controversial events in American history.

I love this story so much. Carla Munro tells us about the time she learned how to fly...in a World War II biplane...over Lake Wanaka New Zealand. She tells the story so well, you can actually SEE her smiling while she typed it up. Add insanely beautiful photos from Johan Lolos and you have just another of the already long list of reasons to visit Lake Wanaka.

So with my upcoming trip to #Cuba (the land of no internet) quickly approaching, I hired an awesome new member of the Resource Travel team, Genevieve Hassall from The Wanderbug. You would think for her first installment of ‪#‎ResourceTravel‬ Instagram Photos of the Week she would select one of mine...but, nope. No. She. Didn't.

You got some explaining to do Genevieve...while we are all waiting for an explanation, check out this week selections!

HOLY HELL. I am not scared of much, but jumping off a clip and flying over jagged rocks and through trees in the French Alps is not something I am ready to do quite yet. This is insanity.

As soon as I saw these wet plate photos documenting the East Coast surf culture, I knew I had to write about it for Resource Travel. I love the photos, and the film is a really great look into the underrated waves of the Atlantic. I really enjoyed writing this piece. I hope you like it. So excited to head to Cuba in just 6 days with +The Giving Lens!  And I am so inspired after seeing the incredible work of Robert Whitman in this mini-documentary film. The way he documents the people, the motion and liveliness of Cuba in his photographs is amazing. I love how he excludes faces in a lot of his photos.

I have photographed some pretty cool wildlife in my career, but nothing quite as cool looking as a Muskox. Watch this beautiful film of this mythical looking creature living in a habitat that appears to resemble the ice age.

So cool. Who wants to go photograph these guys with me this year?

One of the most fun days of my life was when Renee Robyn and myself joined SmugMug at Mavericks Surf Break during a massive swell. Check out the film I made and Renee's incredible photos today on Resource Travel. With massive swells hitting the coast, let's hope that Jeff Clark and his team give the competition a go!

There is a place in Wales, United Kingdom where fighter jet pilots practice maneuvers just meters away from photographers and bystanders. Looks like I know where I am going for my next hair-raising photography trip.

I first saw this film weeks ago when I visited my friends at +SmugMug and I have been chomping at the bit since then to get this article out. This film is beyond incredible, and contains some of the most compelling visuals I have ever seen. I sat down for an interview with filmmaker Anton Lorimer to discuss his fears with this dangerous project, how his use of drones has added priceless production value, and what is next for himself and SmugMug Films.

Amazing work Anton and everyone at SmugMug!

I first learned of Taylor Gray from my buddy +Toby Harriman and was completely blown away by his talent. Then, I found out he was only 17 years old. It's amazing to see how talented the next generation of photographers and filmmakers are and I love following their adventures as they improve their craft.

Taylor is also a hell of a writer, and wrote an article for Resource Travel telling us about how his young age and his future of travel, adventure, and photography inspire him to get out of the house and keep creating incredible art.
