This was a nice article chronicling the pains it took to bring Atari Arcade to mobile ... Very surprised IE out performed Safari, and that some games were slow - looking at the canvas scaling it looks like that night be using an IE fast path....

No mention of Android oddly .

Edit 1. Ah. " The site and games mostly performed, but due to our short timeline, and the wide range of Android devices, we decided to focus on the other platforms first." - odd windows 8 has vanishingly small traffic share.

Edit 2... Ah. " As part of this project, we spent some quality time with Microsoft engineers and evangelists, which was incredibly insightful. Not only did we gain some awesome respect for the amazing team at Microsoft" .... Makes sense now.

The mobile web was HUGE at Google IO 2013 #io13 - so much so that we had 9 talks dedicated to building awesomeness for the Mobile Web.  Here is a playlist http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAbrfaVBC6kWiNBI1wPYhXtTke64QkLqC of all those talks for your viewing pleasure.

Mobile HTML: The future of your sites by +Peter Beverloo and +Paul Kinlan showed you all the API's and techiniques available to you across the open web - you will be surprised about the huge level of support for some of the features such as Camera. Watch Google I/O 2013 - Mobile HTML: The Future of Your Sites

The Modern Workflow for Developing the Mobile Web by +Matt Gaunt gave you access to all the tools available for you to integrate into your workflow so you can build and test for the mobile web efficiently. Watch The Modern Workflow for Developing the Mobile Web - Google I/O 2013more »

I found this - http://www4.in.tum.de/~blanchet/api-design.pdf - the other week via http://ignorethecode.net/blog/2013/02/28/api_design/ - it is very in-depth and is based on the years of learning API Design from the QT framework.

One of my faves is: 4.8 Avoid making your APIs overly clever

Whilst a lot of this article is related to iOS/Objective C development there are a lot of really good nuggets of Developer Experience that are applicable everywhere including " Rule 6: Get up and running in 3 lines "

requestAutocomplete is one of those APIs that at first glance doesn't look sexy, but the potential for the impact that it can have is immense.  Imagine not having to fill out forms anymore, imagine a world on mobile where I don't have to do any typing to buy items or subscribe to a service - what will that do to commerce on the web?

Learn more about the API on the chromium.org site http://www.chromium.org/developers/using-requestautocomplete

+Alex MacCaw has a really good write up about the API  http://blog.alexmaccaw.com/requestautocomplete

Chrome Team is currently working on bringing the App Launcher on the Mac platform as you can see in the screenshot below.

You can already give it a try by running the last chromium build available at download-chromium.appspot.com with the --show-app-list switch.

+Peter Beverloo and myself had an awesome time presenting "Mobile HTML: The future of your sites" at Google IO this year.

There was a lot to talk about, but the point we wanted to get across is that a lot of technology that we think is not available to the mobile we is in fact ubiquitous.

Has anyone got experience of this? The debug deployment process seems a little hoakey, but the debug from visual studio sounds cool.

The problem is that I don't see any alternative to let mobile users quickly visit your site on mobile. NFC is cool but you have to be next to it to transfer it to your phone.

Check out this fun dodge ball game by +Remy Sharp that uses WebRTC and getUserMedia() to let you fling balls at your friend's head!

It requires the (experimental) WebRTC feature in Chrome for Android. To enable this feature, open chrome://flags, click the Enable WebRTC option, then restart Chrome.

Try it out at http://headshots.leftlogic.com/.

On my way to IO for final preparations before my presentation on Thursday. Excited to say the least, but concerned by the lack of planes here in Manchester :)

A new flag has been added in the last Chromium build to make Chrome App windows use native-style window decorations on Windows.

Flag is called "Native style window frames for packaged apps" and can be toggled at chrome://flags.

If you were using some Chrome Commands in your Chrome App, you'll have to reconsider it since the Commands API is now reserved to Chrome Extensions only in the last Chromium build.

For information, the commands API gives you the ability to add keyboard shortcuts that trigger actions in your extension, for example, an action to open the browser action or send a command to the extension.
Go learn more about it at http://developer.chrome.com/trunk/extensions/commands.html

I created a Chrome app which packages up Google Tasks so you can use them in an app window. Uses the <webview> tag which is pretty awesome! Check it out?

If you activated the "Extension Activity UI" flag in chrome://flags of your last chromium build, you'll see that the chrome.webRequest API does now provide more information about what it is doing exactly.

In this basic extension below, I'm basically overriding Google Logo image with a nice kitty image from thecatapi.com. See how simple it is:

chrome.webRequest.onBeforeRequest .addListener(
  function() { return { redirectUrl:"http://thecatapi.com/api/images/get" }; },
  { urls: [ "*://www.google.com/images/srpr/logo4w.png" ] },
  [ "blocking" ]
);

Sweet.  Soon there will be no more drivers needed on Mac for the 360 controller.  https://codereview.chromium.org/14328036/ .  Thanks to +Jeremy Apthorp :)

#ChromeDrone Hackathon @ Make Munich came to a fun end: Tweet2Drone was born and it actually worked!

Controlling an AR Drone 2.0 via the mobile app is not cool - you not what's cool? Controlling it via a gamepad attached to your Chrome browser! You know what's even cooler? Leave out the controller and just tweet the commands to the drone.

The winning team of our hackathon did just that and even better they open sourced their result on github ( https://github.com/lc0/Tweet2Drone ). Check out the video below and the happy winners who can take home the drone with them as well as tickets to ROSCon and a #BallOfWhack each. They will continue to tinker with the drone at the office they're all working at together.

The project, though less frequented than expected, was a magnet for people. It seems that drones are cool and making them do stuff through other... more »

*Firefox OS with Mr +Christian Heilmann *

Usually apps excite me, not OSs. I don't know the last time I was so excited about an OS. Probably WebOS, no coincidence as I consider FFOS the real web OS. Maybe Tizen too, lets see. Exciting times for web standards, and so the pendulum swings.

Watching geeksphone.com for their FFOS devices to go on sale, next week apparently.

Yay. We now have an icon on this tag.... Seriously though, we are doing a lot of developer support here.

GitHub rolled out Content Security Policy to their entire userbase yesterday, which is amazing; I'm really happy both to see that they care deeply about security, but also that they took the time to document the experience. Kudos to Josh Peek and co. You've done great work.

I'm a bit dissapointed that the reaction on Hacker News was less euphoric than my own. In particular, I'm worried that the inadvertent blockage of extensions and bookmarklets will more severely undermine adoption of the standard than I expected. I'm also concerned that the initial response of extension developers is to kill the header via the WebRequest API: http://brianmayer.com/2012/12/defeating-chromes-content-security-policy-header-via-a-chrome-extension/. That's a terrible idea, but I understand why developers feel it necessary.

Long story short: these are bugs I need to kill.Than... more »

Happy news for Developers! If you initiate app and extensions installations "inline" from your website, you'll be glad to know that you won't be restricted to only one verified website in a near future.

And if you're not sure about what is the inline installation, go have a look at https://developers.google.com/chrome/web-store/docs/inline_installation

We just crossed the 2300 members mark and I'm looking for co-moderators. Primary duties:

* Approve member requests
* Use Google+ Community spam controls to fight spam
* Ban authors who turn out to spam or not being in iOS development

I know, it doesn't appear too sexy a job but it is what it is. :-) Ultimately, you help making the community more valuable for everyone.

If you're interested, comment with a little bit about your background in iOS development, please.
