SEOWiSE718Framing and Agenda Setting: Defining how we see the worldThis is an episode of The Paradigm Shift you won't want to miss. Why? Because framing defines the way we see our world. It defines the way we further communicate and the way we do business.Note: If you decide to share this or comment in other platforms...Please use the hashtag #Paradigmshiftweb . That way we can track it (paradigm shift alone has been used way too much for us to keep track).Agenda setting and framingI will explain how the two are inextricably intertwined and really why they are so crucial to understanding the rest of communication. Though generally spoken of in terms of political communication and the news, it needs to be understood that we cannot communicate without framing and agenda setting. In terms of businessI'm sure you can already see how this is applicable to doing business today, but +David Amerland will take it one step further and explain how framing and semantics are intertwined, and how that changes the way we do business. If we better understand the frames in which we live and the frames in which others view the world, can we be more successful in the digital age? Further, are we less likely to get stuck in our own agenda or worse, an agenda set by others?Tune in Thursday July 17th for what I think will be an incredible discussion!Warning: I have already been asked to extend this particular episode so David and I agreed that this conversation may go for 45 minutes rather than the originally planned half hour.Start loading in your thoughts and questions now!Thank you +todd l lebeauc for the awesome graphics!Framing: Whose Semantic Frame Are You Living In?2014-07-17 18:00:0059G+

SEOWiSE718The Paradigm ShiftThe Business of Communicating in a Semantic WebNew: We're trying to track activity so if you share this event anywhere else please add #paradigmshift !I am thrilled to announce my newest show with +David Amerland. Through our interactions on his brilliant +David Amerland's Sunday Read, David and I have developed clear connections between communication concepts I regularly use in Communication Studies and the new Semantic Web that businesses are learning to function in.The show break downIn a half hour David and I will...I will briefly explain a communication concept. For our first show we are starting really basic. I will explain the two-step flow of communication: Its history, the basic model and components within that model, and how we generally study it within communication.David will then take the concept of the two-step flow of communication and apply it to his expertise: Business today. David will explain how the two-step flow of communication functions within the semantic web and why its important for businesses to consider. Finally, we will address any questions that you all raise for us, so bring your thinking caps!A big thank you to +todd l lebeauc for the banner! The Paradigm Shift - The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web2014-06-19 18:00:0089G+

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,067,251We're live on Google Hangouts! Watch the digital teach-in here: http://youtu.be/yb1sYK8aGGISubmit questions via Twitter using the hashtag #404Day  On April 4th, EFF is partnering with the Center for Civic Media at MIT and the National Coalition Against Censorship to bring attention to the long-standing problem of Internet censorship in public libraries and schools for 404 Day. Join us on Friday, April 4th from 12pm-1pm PST for a digital teach-in with some of the top researchers and librarians working to analyze and push back against the use of Internet filters on library computers. Mark your calendars, and check back soon for more information about how you can tune-in.Speakers:Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Deputy Director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom.Chris Peterson, a research affiliate at the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab.Sarah Houghton, Director for the San Rafael Public Library in Northern California.Moderator: April Glaser, activist at the Electronic Frontier FoundationWe also invite librarians and concerned bloggers across the country to blog about Internet filtering in libraries on 404 Day to raise awareness and share stories of free speech infringing censorship in schools and libraries. Want to blog about it? Write an email to april@eff.org to let us know.About Children's Internet Protection Act & Censorship in LibrariesOver 10 years ago, Congress passed the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), a bill that brought new levels of Internet censorship to libraries across the country. The law is supposed to encourage public libraries and schools to filter child pornography and obscene or “harmful to minors” images from the library’s Internet connection in exchange for continued federal funding. Unfortunately, aggressive interpretations of this law have resulted in extensive and unnecessary censorship in our cherished public libraries, often because libraries go beyond the legal requirements of CIPA when implementing content filters. As a result, students and library patrons across the country are routinely and unnecessarily blocked from accessing constitutionally protected websites.404 Day: A Day of Action Against Censorship in Libraries2014-04-04 21:00:0067G+

Electronic Frontier Foundation2,067,251We invite you to join us for a live Google Hangout on Tuesday October 1st at 2 PM Pacific / 5 PM Eastern to learn more about the TPP's copyright provisions and their impact on users, their effect on U.S. copyright law, and how we can work together to protect our access to knowledge, digital rights, and internet freedom. There will also be time for Q & A.Even though we successfully killed SOPA and ACTA, special interests groups continue to pour millions of lobbying dollars to push policies that would further restrict our rights to knowledge. Unable to pass such measures through our legislative process, they’re using secretive, non-democratic tactics to fold harsher copyright restrictions and enforcement measures into a larger trade agreement. The latest and biggest threat on this front is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a multinational trade agreement being negotiated between the United States and 11 other Asia-Pacific countries.Speakers:* Lori Wallach: Director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch* Krista Cox, Staff attorney at Knowledge Ecology International (KEI)* Maira Sutton, Global Policy Analyst at EFF* Parker Higgins, Activist at EFFTPP, Copyright, and Users' Rights: Google Hangout with EFF, KEI, and Public Citizen2013-10-01 23:00:00106G+

Susanne Ramharter71,987Am Freitag, dem 16.8. kommt +Michael Lee Johnson nach Wien. Michael unternimmt soeben dabei wildes (wahnsinniges?)

Reinventors Network778,961Here's a really hard problem that Larry Lessig is not sure how to solve: "Let's assume we've got a fundamentally corrupt government, in the precise sense that the dependence upon "funders" corrupts the intended dependence upon "the people alone," and that too many within that system are too deeply connected to it to push for its change. That means any effective movement for change has got to come from the outside. How would a grassroots movement in the Internet Age create the pressure such a change would require? How would the people who brought the Internet to scale tackle this problem?"Joining Larry in his effort is a veritable who's who of internet know-how, the folks who have built & scaled networks for change: internet pioneer Tim O'Reilly, Change.org Founder Ben Rattray, Moveon.org Executive Director Anna Galland, VC Brad Burnham, Executive Producer of TED Media June Cohen, Bram Cohen, creator of BitTorrent, and Markos Moulitsas, Founder of Daily Kos. Reinvent Money in Politics2013-07-11 20:00:00196G+

We'll be cooking easy and inexpensive Korean food!                                    **********************On Sunday's show, Michelle will be making Mandu Two Ways - (Mandoo)She’ll be making fried dumplings and dumpling soup.  It’s the perfect Korean comfort food to start off the wintry New Year!  Here is the recipe: http://bit.ly/S7hvOnWatch Michelle LIVE on this Event's page, on +Larry Fournillier's Profile Page or on www.hangoutnetworks.com #hoa   #hangoutsonair   #michellelikoreankitchen   #koreanrecipes  Michelle Li's Korean Kitchen - Mandu : Episode 01 - 6:00PM(EST)2013-01-07 00:30:0059G+

Samantha Villenave1,070,432+Art+Talk #16, an interview with +Kurt Ankeny, hosted by myself and +Lena Levin .I asked Kurt for a bio. What he gave me are these beautiful words."I like to describe myself as an autodidact, but that's not really true at all. If anything, I'm a bibliodidact. Some of the works most important to my formation were How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Those two were my lifeline for many critical years of development. In fact, I had given away my copy of Anatomy Lessons,  when I started recognizing images from it in the paintings I was looking at. I hadn't realized how deeply those images penetrated. So I had to buy myself a replacement copy. Here's a problem I have: all writing about art tends to circumvent the art itself. I'm not saying one shouldn't write about art, but it's deceptive to cement into prose a reaction to a piece that depends wholly on the time, circumstances, education, experience, and readiness of the individual viewer looking at it and reacting or responding. So, what you have a is a snapshot of a very, very narrow point where two individuals connected for a moment in time.So those qualms aside, I'm a relatively new painter. I've only been painting for about seven years. Four of them what I would consider "full-time". Painting, as most of us who practice with any determination and ambition know, is a very slow burn. Cy Twombly told Jenny Saville to try and remain ignored for as long as possible. And that is good advice as long as one can manage it. Because painting, especially since the modernist movement, is a vast ocean of possibilities and it takes many canvases to get your bearings.I guess that's my long-winded way of saying that I really don't know what I'm doing yet. I know, I know. One isn't supposed to undercut one's brand and reputation with such nonsense and honesty. "I don't know what I'm doing" does not mean "I don't know where I'm going." I do have plans, I have grand ideas and ambitions. It's just that there's a lot of white space on the map between where I stand now and Mount Accomplishment. I think that the fissure between abstraction and figuration is an obvious point of interest. Today's painters are swarming on that likeArt+Talk interview with painter Kurt Ankeny2012-11-04 20:00:0023G+

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.17
Today is the birthday of one of my favorite graphic artists, M.C. Escher, who was born on June 17th in 1898.
Escher is probably the best known graphic artist ever to have lived. His work has surrealistic touches, and much of it deals with both complexity and confusion.

So, as I am in the throes of doing research for a non-fiction book, trying to find a tool that will let me: collaborate with another author, get order into literally thousands of files, pdf's and eBooks, finding bridges between the worlds of Apple and Windows, while storing everything in the cloud - this image spoke to me.

Escher's Relativity is me at the moment, lots of attention deficit, going in 'n' directions at once, virtually fragmented as far as both focus and attention are concerned, and doing, re-doing, and then... more »

Because I've been so lackadaisical in posting lately, today let's have another painting by John Everett Millais.

This is his Mariana, which I personally prefer to his Ophelia from my previous post. Mariana is another figure from Shakespeare, this time from his play Measure for Measure - which in not only his most unfunny comedy, but also has to be one of the most convoluted pieces of disguises, mistaken identities, and cross-and-double-cross pieces ever written.

Mariana is betrothed to Angelo, the villain of the play, who deserts her when the ship carrying her dowry is lost. It seems that her sorrow and depression over Angelo's betrayal (or an earlier, similar story by Boccaccio) was the inspiration for Tennyson's poem Mariana, with the key lines:

She only said, 'My life is... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 07.20
This Sunday we remember the Italian Mannerist painter Federico Zuccaro, who died on July 20th in 1609.  Interestingly, during his own life time, Zuccaro was probably the most famous living artist throughout Europe, while today he is often considered to be a minor player.

This is his Pan and Cupid, which was painted around 1600. Before you sigh and think 'just another old painting', think about what the painting is (or could be) telling us. Though they are the subject of the work, it can take a moment to even find Cupid and Pan, but then we see that, while they are  they are actually a bit smaller than the other figures, they are placed in a fairly empty space. Around them we see a number of people, some in the dress of Zuccaro's day, others more un- than dressed, and in the river in the background some nudeba... more »

There can never be too much Beethoven
and the Egmont Overture is one of my favorites. Here is another version, directed by the wonderful Hanroncourt ( +mydogskips2 how do you like this one?)

There is a story to this piece, as Harnoncourt says in his introduction, Beethoven did not have any kind of commission or contract for this work, he wrote it because of his admiration for Goethe, and is a musical summary of Goethe's play of the same name.

from wikipedia:
In Egmont, Goethe relates the fight of Count Egmont (1522-1568) against the despotic Duke of Alba. Egmont is a famous Dutch warrior and the Duke of Alba represents the Spanish invader. Though under threat of arrest, Egmont refuses to run away and give up his ideal of liberty. Imprisoned and abandoned because of the cowardice of his people, and despite the desperate efforts of his mistress Klärchen, heis... more »

"Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt was born 152 years ago.
This is ‘Hope II’ painted in 1907-8, from MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art: http://goo.gl/1d5pXM
“In this painting, a pregnant woman bows her head and closes her eyes, as if praying for the safety of her child. Peeping out from behind her stomach is a death's head, sign of the danger she faces. At her feet, three women with bowed heads raise their hands, presumably also in prayer—although their solemnity might also imply mourning, as if they foresaw the child's fate. (...) Here, birth, death, and the sensuality of the living exist side by side suspended in equilibrium.”

Add-on to your Daily Art Story
about Klimt: here is a cartoon from 1904 by the caricaturist Berthold Löffler, showing a critic (recognizable by the Art Journals) in his pockets, rejecting Klimt's work.
Amusingly, the work chosen is the Goldfish or To My Critics, which contains Klimt's reaction, which seems to be Kiss my ...? 'I love you too!

Good Morning Google+ - your daily story about art 07.11
Today's story breaks my heart: it's about a site of World Heritage importance in Afghanistan, which is set to be destroyed as of the beginning of next year.
Note: this is a long one, it starts as a story and ends as a rant.

This is Mes Aynak, an ancient Buddhist city about 130 miles from Kabul. The site was left pretty undisturbed for over 2000 years, until it's discovery in 1963. Even then, while there was the inevitable looting and even use by Taliban and Al-Qaeda, there remain untold treasures and discoveries.

But unfortunately, it seems that the site is also very rich in Copper, and the Chinese have a contract with the Afghan government to mine the location, which will destroy all remains of this truly unique piece of human history.  A campaign in 2012 brought about ade... more »

Today we remember the Dutch painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag, who died on July 10th in 1915. Mesdag came to painting fairly late, having worked in his father's banking business until the age of 35. He specialized in maritime scenes and particularly the area around Scheveningen, such as here, in his Sunset at Scheveningen - Fisher Boats at Anchor.

He also created what is probably one of the largest panoramas ever, see post here: http://goo.gl/VoNDcM

Aldous Huxley quotes A. E. I'm still full of the 'Wedding Spirit', so it is a double pleasure that today is the birthday of the great Marc Chagall, who was born on July 7th in 1887.

As a Jew from Belarusse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chagall's life was both full of danger, threats to his survival and great inspiration and wonderful works during his time in Paris as well as later on. His work is sometimes called surreal, full of symbolism and above all, remembered for his brilliant use of colors, all of which are obvious here, in his Bridal Pair with the Eiffel Tower.

We see the bridal pair, seemingly floating in the air, (or is the rooster carrying them?) the Eiffel Tower in the background, along with allusions to nursery rhymes (the cow jumped over the moon). Though there may may well be darker elementsa... more »

HOW THE BRAIN WORKS: MEMORIES ARE PATTERNS ORGANIZED IN LISTS

The brain stores and processes information and there is more between brains and computers than may be apparent. Each time we do something – or think of something – whether it is brushing our teeth, walking across the kitchen, contemplating a business problem or coming up with a new idea, we reflect on how we were able to accomplish it.

A good example to raise awareness of how our brain works is this experiment:

-> Recite the alphabet
Result: You remember this from childhood and you can do it easily.

-> Now try this: Recite the alphabet backward.
Result: You have extreme difficulties.

Why? Because we do not remember whole images.

Our memories are sequential and in order. They can only be accessed in the order that they are remembered. We are unable to directlyrev... more »

Today we remember Francesco Bassano the Younger, an Italian painter who died on July 7th in 1592.
Bassano was part of a family of painters begun by his father, who was a village painter in the town of Bassano, hence the name.

The family painted mostly genre pictures as well as religious works, often replicating existing works. This is his Animals Entering the Ark, a good example of his realistic work. I can't help it, everytime I thing about the 'Ark' I crack up because I'm reminded of the old Bill Cosby routine about Noah and the Ark. If you've never heard it (and even if you have), your in for a treat. Post to follow!

Not sure if this is true story, but the message is great

Once a group of 500 people were attending a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity. He started giving each person a balloon. Each person was then asked to write their name on it using a marker pen. Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room.

The people were then let into that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written on it within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching for their name, colliding with each other, pushing around others and there was utter chaos.

At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own balloon.
Then, the speaker asked each person to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it. Within minutes everyone had their own balloon.

The speaker then began,... more »

✶Good Morning Google+ ✶your daily story about art
On this Tuesday, let me introduce Francesco Maffei, a relatively obscure Italian Baroque painter who died on July 2nd in 1660.  Maffei's date of birth is not known, it is mentioned as "1610, give or take 10 years", something that is inconceivable to us in this day and age of facts and data.

Maffei was very much into "narrative" art, i.e. paintings that told stories, many of them dealing with mythological subjects, such as this one, his Perseus Beheading Medusa.  Like most of Greek Mythology, the story of the Hero, or demi-God Perseus is full of love, hate, revenge and triumph over incredible odds. For those who don't know the story or have forgotten the details, the story is this:

Perseus was given a momentous task by king Polydectes, who thought to thus rid himself of Perseus. Thetask w... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.22
Once again, the 'major' artists for today do nothing for me, so let's celebrate the birthday of a 'minor' one, the Austrian Wilhelm Bernatzik, who was born on June 22nd in 1853.

Bernatzik was born in the small town of Mistelbach, studied art in Vienna and Germany and spent a good portion of his life in Paris. He was influenced by his academic training as well as the impressionists.  In Vienna, he was also one of the founders of the Secession, whose president he was from 1902-1903. But he left this group together with Klimt in 1905.  Even then, artists had their networks and alliances.

Though no longer well known, Bernatzki created a good number of interesting and moving works. Here is his tryptich, The Gate to Paradise, which I saw at the exhibition of Decadence and Symbolism at theBe... more »

Today is the birthday of the American painter and illustrator Rockwell Kent, who was born on June 21st in 1882. Originally pushed by his parents to study Architecture at Columbia University, Kent pursued his interest in art and soon became recognized as an artist.

Kent was an interesting person, spending much of his time in barren, deserted areas all over the world, such as Alaska, Greenland, Maine, Tierra del Fuego, and Newfoundland. He was intensely spiritual, which did not prevent his promiscuity, nor did it stop him from getting married three times. He was a socialist who was caught up in the McCarthy witch hunts and lost his passport for a time.

But for all the conflicts and turmoil of his personal life, his paintings have a simplicity of forms and a clarity that is not often found. This is his Wreck oft... more »

Good Morning Google+

This morning, let's celebrate the birthday of Salvatore Rosa, an Italian artist born on June 20th in 1615.  Rosa was not only a painter, but also a musician, playwright and writer, mostly of rather satirical pieces berating the culture of his lifetime.  He was quite the maverick, thoroughly convinced of the correctness of his own views (aren't we all?).  For instance; while the prevalent taste was for bucolic scenes and landscapes, Rosa's nature is always very dark, untamed and full of foreboding.

As far as colors in Rosa's paintings go, this, his Allegory of Fortune is probably one of the lightest. It is also a terrific example of different ways we can appreciate a painting. On the one hand, we can look at it from a purely visual and intuitive point of view and enjoy the technical perfection as well as the way that Fortune ispou... more »

None of today's artists really inspire me, and we've had enough Baroque in the last few days, so let's depart from the usual and here is a painting, just because it's beautiful and, I believe it was +Kee Hinckley  who requested a work by this artist.

This is a Seascape by the German artist Carl Wilhelm Hugo Schnars-Alquist, who was born in 1855, in Hamburg.
Originally trained in banking and export, Schnars-Alquist taught himself to paint and was then admitted into the Academy in Berlin. "Alquist", btw, was initially a pseudonym and later became an official part of his last name.

He traveled extensively and painted exclusively scenes with the sea, be it in a harbor, with a yacht, or just plain old seascapes such as this one, which shows his mastery of the subject.

Escher's Relativity is me at the moment, lots of attention deficit, going in 'n' directions at once, virtually fragmented as far as both focus and attention are concerned, and doing, re-doing, and then... more »

For those of you who thought you were escaping images of Drunk Babies with my choice for yesterday's post, think again! Here are some Putti in the painting of Venus and Mars by Carlo Saraceni, who died on June 16th in 1620.

This version is not quite as good as the one I posted last year here: http://goo.gl/NaxUpJ , it seems a bit plumper, somehow less sophisticated, but the Putti are worth it!

Have a fun start into your week and tread lightly

PS: I've let Google AutoEnhance the heck out of the image because it was too dark to appreciate otherwise, see original at wikimedia here:  http://goo.gl/4N20Th

This Sunday is the birthday of Nicolas Poussin, the fantastic French painter, who was born on June 15th in 1594. Because it is Sunday, I will refrain from re-posting the Drunk Babies from last year, but in case you want a look, the post is here: http://goo.gl/AGQPK2.  Instead, let's have a look at another painting, said to be one of his own favorites, his Judgement of Solomon.

Now, if your initial reactions is a bit 'ho hum..' that's fine. That was my first reaction as well. But then I remembered words of Wittgenstein that have really changed my views of not only art but many things in life:

#onthisday in 1931, the Catalan painter, poet, and playwright Santiago Rusiñol i Prats died in Aranjuez, south of Madrid, at the age of 70.

“Nature is a temple in which living pillars / At times give voice to confused words: / man traverses it through a forest of symbols / that look at him with familiar glances. / Like prolonged echoes that intermingle from afar / in a dark and profound unity / vast like the night and like the light / the perfumes, sounds and colours respond.” (Charles Baudelaire, “Correspondances“)

To compensate any bad fortune on this Friday the 13th, I found that it is also the birthday of Maria Helena Vieira Da Silva, a truly inspirational woman artist born on June 13th in 1908.

Vieira da Silva had studied with Leger, but also with the sculptor Bourdelle, as well as engraving. Like a number of other women artists, she did not limit herself to one media, but experimented and worked with textile design.

For all those not overly impressed with my mythological subjects, here is her The Corridor, from 1950. There are no figures, and no stories here, only what you put into it yourself.

The painting is not only a wonderful work on its own, but a great example of her style. One can see how the fragmented, cubist inspired and almost abstrac quality of her paintings would translate well intot... more »

After so much Realism, Naturalism and Landscape in the last few days, we turn to what is becoming a favorite genre of mine: a Historical work! We remember the French Neoclassical painter Merry-Joseph Blondel, who died on June 12th in 1853 with his Dispute of Minerva and Neptune.

Blondel is one of those artists who enjoyed success in his own day, but not so much later. When looking at this painting, and particularly the rather frozen face of Minerva, one can understand his diminishing popularity. So why post it? It doesn't even have the saving grace of Putti!

Well, because I like the story. It seems that both Minerva (the Greek Athena) and Neptune (the Greek Poseidon) were eager to have the newly emerging city we now call Athens named after them. They brawled about it for a while, until Jupiter got tiredo... more »

Where's the ROI in Social Media Marketing?

This is a question that I have heard levelled time and again across corporate tables where I have been sat. Usually the answer comes with a lot of foot shuffling and shifty looks. Today we celebrate the birthday of a true giant of Landscape painting: John Constable, who was born on June 11th in 1776.  If you've not seen it, some general information about Constable is in my post for his birthday last year here http://goo.gl/Fs0WN9 .

Today is the birthday of Henry Potthast, the American Impressionist painter born on June 10th in 1857.

This is one of his Beach Scenes, for which he is best known. These were all produced based on the concept of realism (normal people, no idealism), and in the Impressionistic manner, which he became familiar with when traveling in Europe. Potthast based these works on scenes he found around New York City in the summers and produced them during the last 20 years of his life.

Since I'm busy today I must leave it at that, have a wonderful warm day and tread lightly

.... and another wonderful painting by Emile Friant, this time his Political Discussion.

In later life Friant's work moved towards 'Realism' in the sense that his subjects moved further away from academically 'approved' ones and showed 'normal' people.

Here he wonderfully captures the atmosphere and body language often to be found in discussions about things that people are passionate about. The man in the lower right is turning away, obviously not believing or even wanting to hear what the man across from him, who gestures and even tries to physically 'reach' him is saying. The man in the left background is not engaged at all, he is simply a spectator, while the fellow at the right is holding his head, probably thinking "not again!"

To make up for all of the sad women from yesterday, on this Monday we remember the French painter Émile Friant, who died on June 9th in 1932 with his painting Maternal Tenderness. Friant was trained in both the city of his birth, Nancy, as well as in Paris and worked mostly in a style best called Naturalism.

I find this work particularly interesting because, as opposed to most paintings dealing with 'Motherhood', the child shown is neither a baby or toddler, nor is it a boy! Instead we see a young girl, soon an adolescent, enjoying a moment of physical closeness with her mother. A mother, who, by the fullness of her right cheek, must be smiling as well.

How delightful to be able to share such a moment in which the girl must surely experience the unconditional love of her mother, not only in ara... more »

Good Morning Google+  your daily story about art: 06.08

She only said, 'My life is... more »

Today is not only Fathers' Day in Austria, it is also the birthday of John Everett Millais, the foremost painter of the Pre-Raphaelites, who was born on June 8th in 1829. Millais was a child prodigy, being accepted into the Royal Academy at the age of only 11. At 19 he was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Works by Millais are known the world over, even if he is not, due to the tremendous popularity of his paintings sold as posters. This, his Ophelia is probably his most famous work, it belongs to The Tate and its postcard there is their most popular one.

We see the death of Ophelia as she is drowning.  Ophelia has been driven to madness after her father, Polonius, a counselor to the court (but quite a fool), was killed by her lover Hamlet. The scene is not explicitlyde... more »

On this Monday we celebrate the birthday of the German Expressionist painter Heinrich Nauen, who was born on June 1st (yes, that was yesterday) in 1880.

Nauen was on the edges of the groups of German expressionists that made up the Brücke and the Blaue Reiter, and friends with August Macke and Franz Marc.  The latter's influence can be seen in Nauen's _"Madonna with Animals"_here, in the depiction of the horses, which remind me of Marc's horses and animals.

Today is not only the birthday of Makart (see previous post), but the Holy Feast of the Ascension of Christ. According to the gospels, Christ ascended to the God-Father from Mount Sinai after spending the 40 days past Easter preparing his apostles to spread the "Good News".  In many countries, particularly in Europe, this is an official holiday.

The ascension did not appear in Christian Art until around the 4th century, when it was often shown as Christ climbing towards the outstretched hand of God. Beginning with the 6th century, Christ was shown surrounded by a mandorla (a kind of full-body halo) which was being lifted upwards toward God. The image of a completely floating Christ, lifted above his followers was adopted sometime around the 1st millennium.

Here is Rembrandt's version from 1636,p... more »

After much rain, let's celebrate the return of the sun and spring with the appropriate work of art: Der Frühling (Spring), by the Austrian painter Hans Makart, who was born on May 29th in 1840.

As mentioned in my post about him from last year here: http://goo.gl/jmLsRH, Makart enjoyed almost hysterical rock-star status during his own life, as well as complete contempt in later years. Both were due to his academic, grandiose and sweeping huge canvases of historical dramas.

Born in Salzburg, Makart was, for a time, compared to Mozart, that city's claim to artistic fame. At first glance, this comparison seems absurd. To compare Mozart's playful, innovative compositions with these monumental, imposing "Big Hams" (Austrian irreverent term for huge old painting), based on the musty academics... more »
