Concepción Volcano and Lake Nicaragua

the largest of several freshwater lakes in southwestern Nicaragua and the dominant physical feature of the country. It is also the largest lake in Central America. Its indigenous name is Cocibolca, and the Spanish called it Mar Dulce—both terms meaning “sweet sea.” Its present name is said to have been derived from that of Nicarao, an Indian chief whose people lived on the lake’s shores.

Lake Nicaragua (Spanish: Lago de Nicaragua, Lago Cocibolca, Mar Dulce, Gran Lago, Gran Lago Dulce, or Lago de Granada) is a vast freshwater lake in Nicaragua of tectonic origin. With an area of 8,264 km2 (3,191 sq mi), it is the largest lake in Central America, the 19th largest lake in the world (by area) and the 9th largest in the Americas. It is slightly smaller than Lake Titicaca. With an elevation of 32.7 metres (107 ft) above sea level, thelake reac... more »

Art critic on Havmannen

Havmannen, or Havmann (in English: "The Man from the Sea") is a granite stone sculpture by the English artist Antony Gormley located in the city of Mo i Rana in Northern Norway. The sculpture stands proud in the "Ranfjord" in the city of Mo i Rana, which is often referred to in Norway as "Polarsirkelbyen" (in English: the "Arctic Circle City"). The sculpture is 11 metres (36 ft) tall, weighs 60 tonnes (59 long tons; 66 short tons), and is "forever up to his knees in water, turns his back on the town and gazes resolutely out over the fjord".

The artist originally envisaged the sculpture being created in steel, based on the traditional steel industry which was one of the pillars of industrial Mo i Rana, and placed in the fjord to illustrate the sharp contrasts between nature and industry. However, the local... more »

Colorful Orchid

The Orchidaceae are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants with colorful and fragrant blooms, commonly known as the orchid family. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants, with between 21,950 and 26,049 currently accepted species, found in 880 genera.
The number of orchid species equals more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species. The family also encompasses about 6–11% of all seed plants. The largest genera are Bulbophyllum (2,000 species), Epidendrum (1,500 species), Dendrobium (1,400 species) and Pleurothallis (1,000 species).
The family also includes Vanilla (the genus of the vanilla plant), Orchis (type genus), and many commonly cultivated plants such as Phalaenopsis and Cattleya. Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species in the 19th century,h... more »

Midnight in Mosjøen

Backside of Sjøgata and river Vefsna in Mosjøen, a historic and picturesque street containing the largest concentration of 19th century wooden buildings in Northern Norway.

Mosjøen is situated in the lower part of the Vefsn Valley, where the rivers Vefsna and Skjerva flow into the Vefsnfjord. The town's centre lies on flat land between these two rivers. In addition, the town is surrounded by mountains, green hills, and forests. The Øyfjellet mountain (814 metres) just west of the town is a well-known landmark.
As a rapidly growing town, Mosjøen was in 1875 granted staple rights and in 1876 separated from Vefsn as a town municipality. It is the oldest town in theHelgeland region, and only Bodø is older within the county. It was again merged with Vefsn on 1 January 1962. Since 1998, the town has modern town status.

Sunset over Mo i Rana

Mo i Rana is a town and administrative centre of the municipality of Rana in Nordland county, Norway. It is located just south of the Arctic Circle and in the Helgeland region of Nordland. Some of the outlying areas of the town include the suburbs of Båsmoen and Ytteren in the north and Selfors in the east.
The town is called "Mo i Rana" to distinguish it from other places named Mo—most notably the town of Mosjøen, also in Helgeland—though locally the town is usually just called Mo.
The name "Mo" comes from an old farm that was situated near the modern town. The name of the farm comes from the Old Norse name Móar, which means sand or grass lowland. The name Rana probably comes from Old Norse too. Rana means quick or fast, probably because the fast water flow in the Ranfjorden outside town. The town was an old trade centre inHelgela... more »

Svartisen (black Ice) is a collective term for two glaciers located in northern Norway. The system consists of two separate glaciers,
Vestre (western) Svartisen (221 km2), which is the second largest glacier on the Norwegian mainland (there are larger glaciers on Svalbard, Iceland and Novaya Zemlya) after Jostedalsbreen
Østre (eastern) Svartisen (148 km2), which is the country's fourth largest.
There are also a number of minor glaciers in the area, such as Glombreen in the northern part of Meløy, and Simlebreen in Beiarn. One of the outlet glaciers of Svartisen, Engabreen ends at the lowest point of any glacier on the European mainland, at 20 meters above sea level (in 2007). The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate has monitored the glacier mass balance of the glacier since 1970 and operates a sub-glacial laboratory beneath Engabreen.

Autumn in Gudvangen in Norway

Autumn view out the narrow and closed fjord of Gudvangen in Norway

Gudvangen is a village in the municipality of Aurland in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is a popular tourist destination and is located at the end of the Nærøyfjord where the Nærøydalselvi river empties into the fjord.

The Nærøyfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord, has been included in Unesco’s World Heritage list and is considered to be among the most scenic fjord areas on the planet. Its outstanding natural beauty is derived from its narrow and steep-sided crystalline rock walls that rises up to 1400m straight from the fjord.

Clouds over calm lake

Clouds over calm lake "Litlisjor" in Veidivotn the fishing lake area of Icelandic highland.

This part of the country is among the youngest (1477) and wildest pearls of the central highlands. It includes about 50 lakes of various sizes, many of which are crater lakes. The craters and lakes lie in two rows. Most of the lakes are fed and discharged underground because of the lava fields and porous scoria. To get into the area, you must ford the small river between the two Fossvotn lakes. The northernmost lakes are called Hraunvotn. On some of the lakes, you can find small, beautiful, sensitive and variegated oases. You can catch two-to-six-pound Brown Trout in most of these lakes. Some people have caught ten-pounders!

The area is about 20 km long and 5 km wide and has a southwest - northeast direction. The craters and the lakes lie... more »

The way I see it - Mexico
Indigenous in Chiapas

Came in contact with Sergio Castro Martines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergio_Castro_Martinez)  through Museo de Trajes Regionales ( http://www.museodetrajesregionales.com/ )when we where in San Cristobal de las Casas. He is a remarkable man that has been helping the indians in Chiapas for a long time. He is by training an agricultural engineer, teacher and veterinarian. However, by nature he is a true humanitarian, ethnologist and polyglot. Sergio has spent more than 45 years helping to build schools, develop water treatment systems and provide wound care for burn victims for the many indigenous cultures and Mexican people of Chiapas.

I was hoping to be able to follow him for a day or two in his work but due to circumstances in the community, he was postponing all his visits for some days.
