Have promised not to bring laptop, and not cheat too much with the G+ mobile thing either. Suzy Jenkins2,837I thought it was about time I shared a circle. There are so many shared circles of the "A" list people and photographers plus even the people with high numbers of circlers so I thought it would be a good idea to share a circle of the people who aren't quite in these categories. How do you GM the Boom?!
If you're running a game in which one of the players triggers an explosive spell, do you go big and have it blow up, causing secondary damage from falling debris, or do you keep it simple and have it just cause structural damage?
Here's the context. I'm running a game in which one if the characters has been an assassin working for the 'Big Bad' all along. As he's been going through a labyrinth of passages in the 'Good guys' stronghold, he's been leaving a magical trail. The other players assumed it was just a path he could use to find his way back, when in fact it's primed and ready to blow when he casts a second spell. Part of the labyrinth is underground, with a city above it.
If he actually gets the chance to trigger the explosion, should it simply cause the wall of the corridor to collapse, cave in, and produce a sinkhole... more »

"The City of Gate" group on Facebook is my pet project.
It started out as a way for my friends, some of whom have crazy schedules and others live too far away, to play together. it had to be narrative so that rpg newbies could get into it and there'd be no arguments about rule-sets and dice-rolls from the vets either.
Come take a look. It's fun!

#CityOfGate

In the game I'm running on Facebook, one of the players just cast a spell that causes a meteor to crash into the ground. It occurred to me that this could allow to to do something I've never tried before, incorporate an alien life-form into a fantasy-style rpg. My mind is racing like a rabid squirrel and I can't decide what kind of lifeform to go with.
I've been playing with a more realistic Superman. The high gravity of his native planet allows his muscles and skeletal structure to stretch and contract like his whole body is a giant spring, allowing him to leap great distances and can also spring load his punches. It's seems a little silly though and I was hoping for something more sinister.

So 'The City of Gate' fell flat on it's face and failed to take off on Google+ but it's still going strong and gaining steam on Facebook.
Maybe I'll try again if I can figure out a better way.

The Hero Pitbull!

The children in the Fronteras household referred to their dog as Kuya (“big brother”), and he certainly proved it on the day he sacrificed his life to protect the family.

At around 2 p.m., “Chief”, an American Pit Bull Terrier, rescued Liberata la Victoria, 87, and her granddaughter Maria Victoria Fronteras from a deadly cobra which had entered their house through an opening in the kitchen.

Liberata la Victoria and Chief had been watching TV on the sofa when suddenly Chief jumped up and alerted her to the presence of a cobra less than 10 feet away. Maria Victoria rushed in and pulled her grandmother into a separate room, hoping the snake would leave.

But when Maria Victoria later emerged from the room, she was terrified to find the cobra poised about two feet away. Equally startled, the cobra expanded its hood and appeared to be spitting venom as it prepared to strike.

"The snake was in front of us, maneuvering a deadly attack," says Maria Victoria. "I screamed out loud to ask for help."

That’s when from “out of nowhere”, Chief dashed between the cobra and the two women, using himself as a shield against the cobra’s attacks. Chief then seized the cobra by the neck and slammed it into the floor, killing it.

But for Chief it was a Pyrrhic victory. In the struggle, he sustained a fatal bite to the jaw, and moments later he began gasping for breath and collapsed.

The family sought the help of a veterinarian, but they were told that nothing could be done. According to the vet, the bite was too close to Chief’s brain, and the venom had already spread. Maria Victoria called her husband Marlone who, stunned by the news, rushed home immediately.

Ian de la Rama, a friend of the family, says it was less than 30 minutes from the time Chief had been bitten that he “went wobbly and lost control of his organs,” urinating and defecating uncontrollably. Yet he still kept clinging to life.

It wasn’t until Marlone arrived that Chief finally let go. Ian de la Rama describes, “Chief gave his two deep breaths and died. He was fighting and saving his last ounces of breath to see a glimpse of his master for the last two seconds of his life.”

Ian adds that the last thing Chief did as he gazed up at Marlone was wag his tail.___The Hero Pitbull!

I'm really looking forward to reading this!

Book Review: The Silver Sickle by Ellie Ann

I came to The Silver Sickle with no particular expectations. The author Ellie Ann had asked if I would consider reviewing it and the synopsis sounded like it had potential. But in these scenarios you really never know what you're going to get.

In this case what I got was a book that is well worth reading.

The Silver Sickle bills itself is steampunk and that's true if you use the descriptors broadly. It could also be classified as science fantasy I think. It's also billed as Young Adult, but that's rather deceptive too. Mainly don't get hung up on the genre label because this isn't a book that will fit nicely into your label.

The driving force of the story is the relationship between Farissa and Zel. It is a love story in a sense but not really a romance as such. The reason their relationship drives the story is that they find themselves put in critical positions as a result of the things they do for each other.

When setting up an alien world, an author has to make some difficult decisions about how to get that information across to the reader. Ellie Ann picked the hardest, but ultimately most satisfying approach. Just throw the reader in at the deep end and give them what they need to figure it out.

That does require the reader to commit to actually concentrating for the first few chapters until all the references begin to build a picture, but once they do it's so much more satisfying than being presented with twenty five pages of exposition.

And the world she builds is fascinating. Or at least the little segment of it that we see is, since really all we get to experience is the city of Dyn and it's clear from the references that there are not only other countries out there, but other planets and creatures as well.

The alien goddesses do arguably have rather human emotions and motivations but their description is pretty unique and their behavior makes an internal sense.

Probably my favorite element though is the Cogsmen who I admit I picture rather differently than the none-the-less excellent cover. There's another story to be told about how they came to be in Dynn I think.

Really my criticisms are small and niggly things. The switch between character view points was rather uneven due to the huge variation in chapter lengths. There was one segment where we switched characters 4 times in a matter of 4 or 5 pages and it didn't feel necessary.

The thing about switching viewpoint is it's a moment when the reader is liable to pull out of the story again. But if you can set up a rhythm early on and stick with it, they're much less likely to do that.

I also felt like maybe the King's behavior was just a little bit inconsistent. Now you could argue that's because we are seeing him only from the outside we simply don't see what causes certain actions. But that's not an entirely satisfying answer.

As I said this is small stuff. If there was a 4.5 star rating that's what I'd be giving. Unfortunately since it's not quite 5 I guess it will have to be 4. But if you're looking for a refreshing blend of fantasy, science fiction and steampunk where the central characters are well drawn and the world is unique, check this one out.

On Facebook I have a narrative game running called 'The City of Gate'.
I've been thinking of starting a parallel page on Google+ based in the same universe but on the other side of the gate.
The story so far is that, beyond the mountains is a place called H'vannah. The only way in is a heavily guarded gate in a mountain pass. People have travelled there to petition the guards to allow them safe passage into the lands beyond. Also most everyone is turned away. Many of those rejected had no-where else to go, so they made camp right there on the doorstep of the gate at the foot of the impassable mountains. Over the centuries the camps became shanties, then houses, and some even tried to ply their trade an open shops. Now the city is vast and people still line up at the gates everyday hoping to be let through. Almost all are turned away, only 1 or 2 are allowed through and the rest are left to try make their own way in the City of Gate.
If I start a parallel game here should I maintain the mystery of H'vannah and continue running scenarios in the city, or should I run the G+ version from the H'vannah side see how it affects the main storyline?___What do you think?

Now the city is vast and people still line up at the gates everyday hoping to be let through. Almost all are turned away, only 1 or 2 are allowed through and the rest are left to try make their own way in the City of Gate.
If I start a parallel game here should I maintain the mystery of H'vannah and continue running scenarios in the city, or should I run the G+ version from the H'vannah side see how it affects the main storyline?___Do you guys know anyone who'd be interested in playing a narrative RPG?

I'd appreciate the help finding fellow nerds.
