Art through the Apeture Photography11,270There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! Thank you @118149685580234696847  for so graciously letting me use your shots from last year for our banner.2nd Annual "You Are Beautiful"2015-02-22 04:00:00300
Bette Kauffman26,024And it won't be so cold in December, right? Well, regardless, +Bette Kauffman is coming to town--God willing and some nut doesn't set fire to the infrastructure again! So it's photowalk time. Calling all Chicago and vicinity photogs. Hope you can join me. We'll gather at the Bean for the obligatory group shot there, and I want to check out what has transpired with the construction that was underway in Millenium Park last time I was there. After that, I'm easy. We can go anywhere y'all are inspired to go, including back up to this beach where Tom and I were freezing our tushes back in March 2013.It really was cold that day....2014-12-20 17:00:002
Bette Kauffman26,024@115907986192399529711 is coming to Chicago! Will arrive some time Friday Sept. 26 and be ready for a photowalk Saturday. I have us meeting at The Bean, but if anyone has a better idea, I'm game. I'll be staying in Club Quarters Hotel in The Loop, but I'm comfortable using CTA to get about anywhere I want to go. If you can't join in until lunch time or after, we can make that work too. I'll have to head back to my hotel room by 4 p.m. to get ready for the opera. Y'all get this on your calendar, now!Chicago in September!2014-09-27 17:00:003

Bette Kauffman26,024Yes, Bette Kauffman is coming to Chicago! Opera Friday and Saturday evening, photowalk Saturday, home Sunday. Meet me at The Bean (Cloud Gate to the purists). If the weather cooperates, I plan to be out until about 4:30 p.m. If the weather is nasty (seems a real possibility this year), we'll head up to the conservatory and feast our lenses on orchids and such. Or go anywhere else protected from the elements y'all might suggest. I'm easy to please! Join me for all or part of the day. Well, a bouquet of roses it's not, but beautiful none the less! Read +Bob Danley's always excellent info to understand what you're looking at. Thanks, from #wildflowerwednesday !

#wildflowerwednesday  - Pearly Everlasting
The inset shows Anaphalis margaritacea a little past peak flower color/freshness as in larger photo...dry weather has impacted wildflowers.
Curated by +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes: This plant is a member of the Sunflower family, all 2,600 species in the U.S. and Canada! The white you see in the photos are not flowers just the bracts (Schiemann 2005); flowers are inconspicuous greenish-yellow when bracts open. Plant name derived from usage by folks due to its' excellence as a dried flower.___Well, a bouquet of roses it's not, but beautiful none the less! Campanula persicifolia

This is day 3/5 of #fivedaynaturechallenge which I was invited to participate in by my friend +Jari Pohjasmäki. Thank you Jari! :)

I would like to invite any photographer who is able and willing to participate and maybe has secretly hoped to get an invitation, but still haven't got a chance to join this fun :)

Rules are very simple :
- post 5 shots during 5 days
- mention the person who invited you
- invite another person to join in
- use the hashtag for the challenge

Have fun! :)

Wow! No wall flowers here! What would summer and prairie and meadow and road ditches and birds and bees BE without purple coneflower! Thanks, +Ohio Prairie Nursery!

#WildflowerWednesday! Perhaps the most widely recognized wildflower, Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is the gateway flower of prairies!

In the summer months, you'll find this flower swarming with bees, butterflies and other pollinators. In the fall, look for songbirds to frequent the plant to eat the seeds.

These lovelies look like they're about to snap, crackle & pop! But +Fine Art Photography by Ken Barber is now not so sure they are Fairy Trumpets and #wildflowerwednesday can't confirm or deny. Anyone else?

Fairy Trumpets aka Scarlet Gilia
Ipomopsis aggregata for #wildflowerwednesday  (thanks for the reminder, +Bette Kauffman, I would have forgot)

I was so certain that these were Fairy Trumpets at the time I took them that I never bothered getting other identifying characteristics (i.e. leaves) in the shot.

I'm not as sure of that ID now, but I still think that's probably what they are.  They are all over the Jemez Mountains right now, and pretty much at the end of their bloom.___These lovelies look like they're about to snap, crackle & pop! Charmed (Lanceleaf Plantain [Plantago lanceolata])

So..., it is a bit embarrassing to post a wildflower I have not identified as a reminder for #wildflowerwednesday ! But here I am doing it. I was totally charmed by these along Highway 26 in Oregon, and it seemed I saw them everywhere I went. Nevertheless, I have not been able to come up with a description that enabled me to locate them online. So.....

Come on, all #wildflowerwednesday aficionados and help me out, especially those who live out west! Tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday once again and I'm looking forward to seeing your recent successes. Don't forget to share the story of the shot, too, and tag me, +Bette Kauffman.

Yes! This is why I hang out with native plant people here in Louisiana and plant nothing but natives in my yard. Thanks to +Ohio Prairie Nursery for sharing this with #wildflowerwednesday .

Here's a short story for #wildflowerwednesday

If you plant it, they will come...

One of the members of our staff lives in an urban area on a fairly busy street. Three years ago, they made a conscientious decision to turn their mulch beds into small prairie areas. Over these years, they have watched their prairie come to life with beautiful blooms and experienced an uptick in different species of birds, bees, butterflies and moths, species they had never seen with the mulch beds and the annuals and perennials they traditionally planted,

Yesterday, while out admiring the plants, they noticed that the female and male American Goldfinches that have taken up residence in a nearby tree perched on Ox-Eye Sunflower. The birds only started appearing two years ago when the prairie was first beginning to bloom.

The highlight of the their day appeared in the form of a Hummingbird Moth. This Snowberry clearwing showed up to feast on Wild Bergamot and stayed long enough for them to snap a few (if grainy) pics.

Moral of the story: No matter how big or small the area, you can plant native species. Native grasses and wildflowers make for beautiful landscaping and also attract and benefit wildlife and pollinators, but reduce the need for watering, fertilizers and pesticides.

If you're interested in learning more about how you can plant native species in your yard, stop out and see us this Saturday at Springfield Bog! We'd love to chat!

So.... several lovely wildflowers from +Steele Wotkyns after a long silence from his corner! Steele, I can tell you the little purple ones are Oxalis. Can't tell the species; probably not enough info to tell, but definitely Oxalis. As for the white one? Seems I should know it but I don't, so in additon to +Bob Danley, I'm going to tag +Eric Hunt into this discussion.

Although I'm not sure if #wildflowerwednesday was still extant I thought I'd post these delightful recent ones. The two views of (Calochortus nuttallii ) remind me so much of my dear mother, Patricia (Pat) since this Sego lily was one of her all-time favorites! Also, two mystery (to me, anyway) wildflowers: so, I'm hoping to enlist the assistance of +Bette Kauffman and in particular +Bob Danley to identify them. Both were in riparian and Rocky Mountain (Colorado) habitats and the white one's flower was nearly hiding under its leaves. Sure hope to hear from you & enjoy! What a year for wildflowers!___So.... several lovely wildflowers from +Steele Wotkyns after a long silence from his corner! Steele, I can tell you the little purple ones are Oxalis. Cholla
for #wildflowerwednesday  curated by +Bette Kauffman

I've been waiting all year for these to bloom, 'coz I never got any of them last time I lived in cholla ("CHOY-ya") country.

Finally, they bloomed... and work got crazy-busy.  I never got a chance to go out shooting.  Even on the weekends; I was just too worn out.

The project is winding down, and I'll be moving on soon.  And I was able to get a few Chollas last weekend, right at the tail end of their season.

According to my online searching, D. formosa can be quite pale and that is how I decided the species. They were growing mostly in shade. Indeed, the light levels were very low even though it was the middle of a bright sunny day. I do wonder, will this same species grow in sunnier places, and if it does, is it more saturated in color? In other words, does the relative brightness or paleness vary with habitat?___

Salal (Gaultheria shallon)

From the Oregon Coast for #wildflowerwednesday, this plant is both attractive and useful. According to Wikipedia, the edible leaves and berries were popular foods among Native Americans and settlers in the Pacific Northwest, and the berries are still used to make jams and jellies. I did not get to taste any, but in late June, flowers were everywhere. The plant especially grows in coniferous forest at low to moderat levels, and of that, Oregon has plenty! These I photographed along moderately challenging trail leading from parking along the Highway to a secluded little surfing beach.

So... tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday! In fact, I will be in a rather intense workshop beginning at 2 p.m. and extending through most of Saturday. But I'll have the late evening free and expect to have Internet and will get to your submissions when I can.
