Finally! The Show You Have Not Been Waiting For Comes to DVD! http://amzn.to/1KjGMzm

Yes the trully awful 80s scifi show Manimal is being released on DVD and you can own it for for the princely sum of $25. What's it about you ask?

Dr. Jonathan Chase (played by Simon MacCorkindale), is a shape-shifting man who possesses the ability to turn himself into any animal he chooses. He uses this ability to help the police solve crimes

Back in the 80s we were kind of starved for good scifi, so I have to admit... I watched this and it's as bad as it sounds.

We get our first good look at Luke, looking very Kenobi like in this set photo from The Force Awakens.

Enjoy it while you can because it looks like it's being removed already: https://twitter.com/BuzzFeedMexico/status/631949734870061056/photo/1

This seems pretty revolting based on their own description. I think its a bit of a side issue because my guess is its a pretty small number of people who will ever be exposed to it and the industry has bigger things to address. That said, I'm not clear why DriveThru would want to be associated it.

There are theoretically some complex issues when it comes to fiction (or games revolving around stories) when it comes to portraying fantasy (in the sexual sense) or evil characters doing evil things. This one seems (again based on their own description) to be deliberately trying to shock and offend.

The thing about free speech is that you have the right to say it (or in this case write it), but people are not obliged to sell it for you. Nor is refusing to offer a product in and of itself a failure to protect free speech.

I had caught references to a new rape-centric RPG product on drivethru but had no context for it. Context showed up on my Twitter stream today, so I share for the curious. http://jessicalprice.tumblr.com/post/127951942358/games-sure-are-classy?og=1&fb_action_ids=10207088043980570&fb_action_types=tumblr-feed%3Areblog

Killing comments for obvious reasons.

Edit: CEO of drivethru says explanatory post is coming today or tomorrow. I am certainly curious to see it.___This seems pretty revolting based on their own description. I noticed a lot of push back against that Amazon piece amongst the chatter classes of the tech sphere last week. So I find this piece quite interesting given how recent the events described are:

It's not just stuff from years ago, it's clearly not that isolated and if PIPs are involved there's a major failing in HR at that company.

Okay so the sciatic nerve pain has subsided only to reveal it was concealing tendonitis in my right hip and leg. Yay lucky me!

On the plus side while for sciatica movement is encouraged, the emphasis on tendonitis is on stretch exercises and resting the affected areas. Which gave me a perfect excuse to keep my feet up in my recliner all morning and binge watch a bunch of stuff.

I'm now all caught up on Last Ship, have one more episode of Dark Matter to go and have got to the point where Killjoys gets good.

ZX Spectrum Vega

So as a child who had first a ZX81 and the a ZX Spectrum (48K!) I admit the notion of the ZX Spectrum Vega which is a single unit with 1,000 games built into it is quite appealing.

But... 100UKP for something that I could essentially emulate on my laptop for free? Nah.

Steven Moffat Teases Doctor Who Season 9

Moffat goes through episode by episode and gives just a little tease on what it might be about.

The thing that excites me the most? All those two parters!

I'm still old school in thinking the best length for a Doctor Who story is about 100 minutes. It gives time to establish the setting and characters properly.

Disney Star Wars Land Concept Art

Okay so it's just concept art and the usual warnings apply, but if they can get this sort of thing in the parks where you can actually walk up to the Millenium Falcon?

Yes that's every bit as cool as Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade, if not more so.

Disney Announces Star Wars Land Expansion

Sneaky of them, they made the announcement at the end of their Live Action Movies segment rather than waiting for the Parks and Resorts Presentation:

_A shot of a Star Wars planet and a couple of TIE fighters flying by was shown on the screen. “We’re bringing Star Wars to life in a big way, and I mean really big. It’s our largest single-themed land expansion ever. We knew it needed to be big, and great, and every bit as thrilling as our films are. So we’re transporting guests to a new planet. This new 14 acre land will be occupied by many inhabitants, aliens, droids. The attractions, entertainment, everything we create will be part of our storytelling, transporting our fans to a world of fun.

Fallout Shelter... Eh

So I kept seeing people talking about Fallout Shelter and now it's out on Android. Figured I'd give it a shot.

1st impression: Well this is very pretty.
2nd Impression: Him, kinda repetitive
3rd Impression: Is that it?

This all took about 10 minutes before I uninstalled the game again. Why do the majority of mobile games suck so badly?

Crossing my fingers that we may see some interesting  press releases soon. Day 2 of Disney's D23 expo has a live panel right now covering all their live action movies.

Which includes Marvel (Captain America: Civil War; Doctor Strange), Star Wars, and numerous live action versions of Disney stuff.

I doubt they'll show us the footage that attendees get to see, but maybe a few stills?

So I've been working on the back yard this week. It was not a pretty sign, heavily overgrown with vines on the fence and the bushes  thick and tangled.  The side of the house had become so overgrown it was like I had my own forest.

Those trees have been hacked down (sawed in a couple of cases) and dragged away. vines have been poisoned, bushes trimmed back to where they belong.

This is all good except for one thing.  I have been dealing on and off this year with a very mild case of sciatica. Nothing that a bit of care in my seating and movement wouldn't take care of.

Lopping down branches, dragging and throwing them does not count as careful movement. I now have pain radiating down my right leg to my foot every time I either stand or sit.

Ouch!

Reviews people! It's not a lot to ask.

I know it seems like such an effort to organize your thoughts but you can spare a paragraph can't you?

Here is a heartfelt and self-interested plea:

Plussers, my birthday is coming up at the end of the month. I will be 43 or something like that. That's not important.

All I want for my birthday are reviews, please. I've written lots of e-books (at last count it was just over too many) and you can find them all at my Amazon Author page (http://www.amazon.com/Damian-Trasler/e/B007XI3A3Q)

I'm giving one away free next week (from Monday, "My Cosplay disasters", and I'll probably run another free promotion the week after that for a different book)

Anyway, I'd really, really appreciate it if you would take five minutes to write a review for me. It'd be terrific if you've actually read the book in question, but whatever.... After all, there's always a chance that I'm only doing this as a cry for help, and if people actually respond to the books, I may stop writing them. We can only hope.

So it seems Disney have got their storyline sorted out for the in development Pandora, the world of Avatar expansion at Animal Kingdom.

For those who don't track these things closely, the guy in the video who seems overly made up and with very fake hair is John Landau who was co-producer of Avatar and the guy with the stuff dangling from his ear is Joe Rohde, the Vice President of creative at Disney Parks and primary creative force behind Animal Kingdom.

Okay. I'm going to go there.

I actually think there are a number of valid issues raised in this video that should be talked about more widely

I have always thought it unfortunate that there isn't a respectable advocate for male issues (the less said about the Men's Rights Movement, the better). Because there are problems that should be discussed and addressed which are instead shoved under the rug.

All that said, by framing this as an attack on feminism, once again, those issues are undermined.  Because it's not an either/or situation. You can advocate for women's equality and not be advocating against men's issues.

I come back to this again and again. Life is not binary. People keep framing everything as pro-this or anti-that, but things are so much more complex. Look at each individual issue, stop obsessing over the labels.

I think a lot of Android geeks will be sad about this one. Though it may just be a temporary thing with the pilot happening at a later date or elsewhere.

I can see the appeal of a modular phone for those who like to tweak their gadgets, but I'm kind of doubtful about widespread appeal and even more dubious about making it cost effective.

In The Garden

I took this earlier in the summer when visiting a heritage site that had a traditional 1800's garden set up.

With the sunny weather it was a simple enough shot, but afterwards I used Photoshop to de-emphasize the background (slight darkening, slight desaturation of the colors) and to sharpen the foreground and bring out some of the details.

Very interesting concept. Imagine if Interstates in the US had a wireless charging infrastructure.

Twelfth Doctor - Old TARDIS by rapsag - http://doctor-who-love.deviantart.com/art/Twelfth-Doctor-Old-Tardis-509580016

Since there's more than a touch of old-school to Capaldi's Doctor it seems particularly appropriate to put him in an old style TARDIS complete with roundels.

It's an old article but it happens to fit in with a lot of reactionary stuff I've been seeing online lately about how "dangerous" the world is these days.

We have to protect ourselves! We have to protect our children!

Nope, it's probably never been safer actually. The danger is mostly in the media and in our mental biases. This is a particularly interesting detail:

Sampson has found that people interpret increasing levels of diversity in their neighborhoods in much the same way they interpret physical disorder - that is to say, as an indicator of rising crime. (History suggests this is exactly backward: Murder, for instance, tends to fall during immigration booms.)

Which is not to say the risk is zero, but a rational assessment is more useful than panic.

Not that I think this is a remotely effective way to get FOX to negotiate a deal with Marvel, but it's got to be deeply embarrassing for them. :D

We get our first good look at Luke, looking very Kenobi like in this set photo from The Force Awakens.

Enjoy it while you can because it looks like it's being removed already: https://twitter.com/BuzzFeedMexico/status/631949734870061056/photo/1

Okay there's a lot to unpack here but it's worth looking into the details because this is a prime example of why the absolutist positions in modern politics are not good.

The issue that triggered this is it has been revealed that back in 1992 Ben Carson used fetal tissue for medical research. An action which certainly seems contrary to his stance on Planned Parenthood and the allegations that they are distributing tissue from aborted fetuses.

Now one obvious option would have been for him to say his position on the subject had changed. 1992 is a long time ago and changing your mind is legitimate (though unpopular in political circles).

He didn't though instead arguing that taking a dead specimen and keeping a record of it is different to killing babies and taking the tissue. Which would be true if babies were being killed just for the tissue but that's... more »

Which would be true if babies were being killed just for the tissue but that's clearly not what is happening. Instead what we actually have is a situation where there is a dead specimen so why shouldn't science make the most of that?

In attempting to argue his position is unchanged, he is arguing against his own position. Carson went on to say that fetal tissue research should not be banned and is not immoral. Okay. So what is the issue with Planned Parenthood again?

It gets even more interesting. When asked if  Planned Parenthood should cease distribution of the fetal tissue, Carson didn't answer. Though he does favor defunding the group. Now keep in mind that abortions aren't funded by the Federal Government anyway so defunding the group would not impact that at all, rather it would reduce its ability to provide other beneficial care to women.

Carson went on to mention that the person who started Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger believed in eugenics and so he was somewhat biased against he group.

That sounds like an outrageous claim but it's actually true. Sanger did in fact believe in eugenics, though not in as extreme a form as the Nazi's did (there were quite a few Americans who did) and was in fact quite racist.

However, Margaret Sanger also considered abortion to be a last resort which is why she was so strongly in favor of birth control. So if he is presenting her as the guiding force of the group, why does he think they are pushing abortions?

Of course Margaret Sanger died in 1966 and stopped being president of Planned Parenthood in 1962 so to suggest that she still has a strong influence some 50 years later is a bit of a stretch.

In 2009, Planned Parenthood provided 4,009,549 contraceptive services, 3,955,926 sexually transmitted disease services, 1,830,811 cancer related services, 1,178,369 pregnancy/prenatal/midlife services, 332,278 abortion services, and 76,977 other services, for a total of 11,383,900  services. That means abortion is less than 3% of what Planned Parenthood doe for women in the United States. And it's that other 97% that would be defunded...

Sometimes things can't be boiled down into simple slogans and campaign promises.___

The headline is overly dramatic but there is a truth here.

In their desperate chasing of the ultra conservative vote to win the nomination GOP candidates are saying a lot of things that will turn off the moderates they need to win a Presidential election.

Neither party is able to win just off their base but the eventual winner of this battle will be faced with a lot of things they went on record saying that they're going to regret.

Well that or be Mitt Romney and not have a position on anything...

The thing is historically the early wins in Iowa etc don't actually help the candidates much. Maybe they should rethink their strategies?

Another shot from last December's Disney World vacation. Not only do many rooms in the Animal Kingdom Lodge have balconies overlooking the Savannah area they also have these nice overlooks where you can sit comfortably in the shade and just watch the animals.

I was amazed by the amount of homework handed out when my kids started school. Vastly more than I received as a child.

I have always held the belief that homework should mostly just be finishing up stuff that wasn't completed in class plus some additional memorization stuff (spelling or tables).

The Flash Comes to The Flash!

So in the (rather disappointing overall) season finale of The Flash we got a brief cameo of some very distinctive headgear. And sure enough the original flash Jay Garrick is going to be in season 2.

Love the promo image.

Dumb Things You Read Online
AKA, why I don't usually read the comments on websites

"So if diversity couldn't make this movie a hit, what is diversity good for?"

This in reference to the apparently terrible Fantastic Four movie and the fact they gasp cast a black guy to play the Human Torch.

Oh people... why are you so stupid?
