Well now’s your chance. In a first for the agency, NASA will host a Google+ Hangout live with the International Space Station on Feb. 22 from 10:30 a.m EST to 11:30 a.m. EST. Google+ Hangouts allow people to chat face-to-face while thousands more can tune in to watch the conversation live on Google+ or YouTube. This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth. During the event, several video questions will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground. Additionally, NASA will ask real-time questions submitted by our followers on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. Unique and original questions are more likely to be selected. You can view the Hangout live on the NASA Google+ page or the NASA Television YouTube channel to watch the astronauts answer the questions. SUBMITTING REAL-TIME QUESTIONS To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, please use the hashtag #askAstro. You can also post a comment on a thread on NASA’s Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event. WATCHING THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT To join the hangout, and for updates and opportunities to participate in upcoming hangouts, visit NASA's Google+ page at http://plus.google.com/+NASA. During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station. Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. All the Storage You'll Ever Need

I bought this in Singapore in 2000, for my Olympus C2500L. It was a bit of a risk, because the camera specs said it could handle up to 64MB cards. Thankfully, it worked just fine.

These days, I might manage to squeeze 2 RAW files plus 2 Fine JPG files on this card (if I ever managed to squeeze the card into my camera).

I just bought a 64GB SD card for my camera for about a quarter of what this cost me 15 years ago.

Me and Shithead

They finally got me on a horse. I quickly named this one Shithead, it seemed appropriate and he seemed hell bent on meeting the brief. Not one thorn bush or rock was passed that he didn't try to use it to amputate one of my legs. Or at least scratch it a bit.

However, his piéce de resistance was, that every time we stopped, he'd carry on just far enough to push my knee up the backside of the horse in front. Nice.

Yeah, and on the whole 2 1/2 hour trek through the mountains he was the only one in our group to take a crap. I rest my case.

Fujifilm X100T - One Week On

I’ve now had my X100T for just over a week. The weather has been pretty awful so I haven’t managed to shoot as often as I’d like in that time.

So, first impressions:

Pros:

Contrary to what just about everyone told me before I bought the camera,  I’m not a fan of the electronic viewfinder but I love the optical viewfinder, especially with the various digital overlays enabled.  The EVF isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, it just isn’t for me, except for close-ups where parallax is an issue.

Full analog controls, a shutter speed dial, an aperture ring an exposure compensation dial. Everything just makes sense, you can see how the camera is configured without even switching it on.

Fujifilm X100T - One Week On

I’ve now had my X100T for just over a week. The weather has been pretty awful so I haven’t managed to shoot as often as I’d like in that time.

Button lock (hold down the menu button for a few seconds). This, I found totally by accident when I discovered that most of the buttons on the back of the camera were locked. It’s a great feature that makes it impossible to accidentally change any menu settings while shooting.

Cons:

Exposure under high contrast lighting seems to err on the bright side. I might even say that it is “exposing to the right”. The good news is that, so far, highlights have been easily recoverable in post-processing. The downside is that sometimes SOOC RAW files look over-exposed.  This makes initial selection of images to process slightly more difficult.

The EVF and LCD seem to be slightly too contrasty at default settings to allow any reasonable decisions to be made during playback.

In conclusion, these are just my feelings,  the pros far outweigh the cons, and the cons, are so trivial as to be not really an issue.

I Just Bought a Thing

(h/t +Craig McCormick for the title)

Those of you not familiar with life in China may not realise what a challenge it can be for a foreigner to just buy a thing.

Just going into a shop to buy a thing will often result in paying a premium price, because, foreign. The best option for over the counter purchases is to take a local with you and send them in to negotiate the price first, before you show your face.

Why not just buy online then? I have three bank accounts here, all with nice debit cards so making an online purchase should be a cinch, right?

Wrong.

Firstly, I try to avoid Taobao for purchases of this magnitude. It's all too easy to get ripped off by Taobao sellers. For example, the camera may well be the genuine article, but what about the battery, the cables, the chargers? It's all too easy for... more »

For example, the camera may well be the genuine article, but what about the battery, the cables, the chargers? It's all too easy for those to be replaced with cheaper knock-offs before shipment.

So that leaves jd.com (or similar sites). Great, they accept all sorts of bank cards from all sorts of banks. Go to the payment page; Yes, my bank is supported. Enter card number, yes. Enter name, yes. Enter ID card number, er, uh, oh. Let's try my passport number, nope. Purchase failed.

I have one other means of payment; WeChat. I quickly googled use WeChat to pay jd.com, only to find out that the online shopping channel within WeChat is jd.com.

I few button presses and a quick login and, voila, "please enter your payment pin to pay". In seconds, the payment was confirmed and my bank had sent me a text to confirm it. Woohoo!

What Goes Around, Comes Around

Am I the only person thinking about Visual Basic 3 compiling down to intermediate code that was then translated by a runtime? Or, for that matter .net or Java? Probably Java, actually because MS never created the VB runtime for anything other than PCs.

So now, 20 something years later, here's Apple innovating once again. I guess, it isn't exactly the same, because to use legacy parlance, Apple is is re-linking the object code before delivery, but the concept is similar.
