He's back on the drops again! This time in experimentation for a show coming up in November with my artistic collaborator Marina Talevksi. The show is to be called Barriers: break or break through and features a skull or representations of a skull or many skulls or many representations of the same skull ... we haven't quite decided yet ;-)

Barriers will be our second formal exhibition together after 2 Tens & A Tomato in 2014. Suffice to say that the show features skulls and in preparation for this I experimented on the weekend with some waterdrop refraction images featuring a skull... trying to get an image of a skull to refract in a water drop. It was tricky but I'm rather pleased with these initial results. You can check out my other forays into drop refraction photography in my WaterPlay gallery :-)

Barriers: Skull Water Drop Experiments - Series One

In other news, my artistic collaborator Marina and I have a small show coming up in November. The show features a skull or two and today I began experimenting with refracting a skull through a water drop with a view to creating a new image for the show. Here's the results of the first session ... I think they're kinda wild :-)

Interested to hear what you think.

Blackstar

After a long silent time
With a friendly peck on the cheek
She was off to the ocean with it's crystal blues and sunsparkl'd azures

He cleaned up after she left
The glasses and tobacco
plates and sheets
papers and her hair
Draped on pillows
creating casual arcs on the tiles
debris on the shore as after a rough sea

Emerging into sunshine
hot and beating
to return to the bench
with a cordial
and a smoke
the litter of butts surrounding
testimony to the time spent there last night
and one...
the first one

the one when she first arrived
happy and expectant
hair cut and straight
new skirt
and totally gorgeous

the one when she first arrived
happy and expectant
hair cut and straight
new skirt
and totally gorgeous
with lipstick

a touch remained on the single butt
the first one she kissed
before the blackstar
emerged later from behind the moon
and played it's game of scramble
and miscommunication
and churned joy into turgid silence
and distance

The first one
with lipstick

he cried then
when his eye caught it
hot tears of hurt and love
for their fragile hearts
each now cracked
and from where?
How?
He dare not seek a why and be forever searching
for something he would never find
for the blackstar
in wicked interferences conspires never to reveal

It has it's methods own
The blackstar
honed on our fears
with twisting happen-stance and evil synchronicities
bent on undoing the fine tapestries
of our lives and dreams
Plans? Pfft! She told me once
[and not very long ago!]
She had met the blackstar before and is no stranger to it
Perhaps she called it something else
We've all known it
sometime
somewhere
with someone we love

Begone!
Enough of the blackstar!
Just fuck off back to wherever you came from.
[He uttered it forcefully enough to cause a magpie to tilt and peer]
[OK it wasn't quite screamed but it had intent!]

In the heat of the sun
breeze hot and crisp
it left him alone
and he was
alone

alone.

He thought of her then
driving down the mountain
Her hair fragranc'd with his shampoo
The road a focus
for the singular cogency that road tripping delivers
angling to arrive
at land's edge
the coast
and the promised purity of the ocean's kiss
the refreshing salty cleansing
and momentary exhilaration
of the heart
only the sea's immersive embrace
as only the ocean can
and will
when nothing else works...

Swim strong my love.___

Question: Data projectors for Studio photography

Great photographic minds of the Plus-ness I beseech thee...

I'm looking at purchasing a data projector for use in a studio environment ... ie projection of images and pattern onto a subject (I know it's been done a zillion times before but not by me ;-) ). My question relates to just how powerful a projector needs to be when used as the sole light source? I have the option of purchasing an ANSI 3000 Lumen projector for about the same as I can hire one for a weekend. I'm initially doing monochromes so I'm after the exposure value on the whites mainly but I anticipate I'll progress into colour patterns wherein the light values will fall dramatically.

My question is does anyone have direct experience in using data projectors for this kind of work? I get that more lumens thrown equates to better exposure... more »

My question is does anyone have direct experience in using data projectors for this kind of work? I get that more lumens thrown equates to better exposure times but I'm looking for the sweet spot. I'll be using my D600 for the work.

Thank you :-)

PS I have done googling on this subject but have yet to arrive at a satisfactory solution ... I guess I just don't want to be disappointed when I setup a new projector to find it's just not bright enough ;-)___

Because, butterflies

And because sometimes it's nice to have a splash of colour after some monochrome :-)

Looking up

A corollary photo to my earlier escalator photographs. This is downstairs looking up at the underside of the escalators in Skytree Plaza, Tokyo.

Every now and again I'll share a song that I can't stop humming and singing... Right now it's the Chemical Brothers The Golden Path... if your workdays tend toward the grey like mine do occasionally then I think you may like this... I also find myself reminded of how truly influential Talking Heads were... Please enjoy :-)

Also, this track features Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips fame and be sure to lookout for a cameo by the Chemical Brothers as Siamese twin employees of the month... :-)

Deep Dreaming Black on Green

I ran my photograph 'Black on Green' through a #deepdream  algorithm and I love the result. I'm going to have this printed. It's really worth clicking on it and checking it out :-)

A Little Piece of Me

Dark
I feel it’s pull
tangible as a kiss never realised

Cold
the space between
whirling sheets of colour

Light
a piercing clarity
precision at a price

Warmth
strangely within

Life
unfurling
a fern glowing against shadow

Always the Way

A little thing I made by placing two feathers with a street marker (if one of my Japanese speaking friends could tell me the character I'd be very grateful :-) ) in Arashiyama, Japan.

Black Against the Green

The giant bamboo grove in Arashiyama, Japan. What an amazing place. Loads of people around but not so many looking with this perspective ;-)
