ISOOSI Research Engine3,477Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing with Dr. Mani Saint-Victor ( +Mani Scienide ) and +Chris Lang In our last show we discussed how words shape brands, both to those within, and without the company.  Building from that understanding of words, tone, voice, this week we go to the Customer's story and how we find and play our role in that story. Its fine to define ourselves to ourselves, in a fixed context of simply describing who we are, what our mission is, and similar things... But how does that matter to the potential customer who is wrapped up in their own problems right now?  How do we present ourselves in relation to a specific issue and mindset without losing any of that true definition of ourselves. In this episode we'll revise the importance of 'story', but from the perspective of the customer's story rather than our own.  We'll discuss how we fit ourselves into a vital and needed role in that story, and how to play that role effectively, powerfully, believable, and above all, truthfully.LinksG+ Hangout Event: http://isoo.si/Ab23DWatch on YouTube: http://isoo.si/t3B2SMain Comment stream: http://isoo.si/Ab23DRelated recommended reading: http://isoo.si/q5FWnJoin our wonderful guests +Mani Scienide and +Chris Lang, the   #isoosichat   regulars +Ammon Johns, +Bill Slawski and +ISOOSI Research EngineRoles and Stories in Effective Marketing2014-07-01 21:00:0074

For our first show we are starting really basic. David will explain how the two-step flow of communication functions within the semantic web and why its important for businesses to consider. Finally, we will address any questions that you all raise for us, so bring your thinking caps!A big thank you to +todd l lebeauc for the banner! The Paradigm Shift - The Business of Communicating in a Semantic Web2014-06-19 18:00:0089

Meloney Hall3,163Teacher Says, “ Okay, class --  you better take notes for this lesson.”Fifteen students take notes vigorously as they try to keep up with writing cursive on their lined notebook paper.Eight Students do not take any notes at all.  They might ask for someone’s notes later. One Student draws doodles as a form of note-taking.  She gets laughed at and told to “grow-up” and take notes the right way.  I’m kind of embarrassed I listened to those peers; I need to gain those skills again!  So much easier to retain the information when you can draw pictures with your written notes (printed, not cursive). How about the Digital Way of taking notes today?  That’s what +Sacha Chua  will be showing us during the HOA broadcast with me.  I will be interviewing Sacha Chua on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT about how she uses SketchNotes for taking notes in a digital format.  Free-flow handwriting and techy all at the same time!  She’s a woman in science and technology, so she really loves gadgets!  She uses SketchNotes, and it’s really very fascinating!  Watching her do them LIVE is really the best!  I know Sacha as a fellow HelpOuts Provider, and I have seen her do this for many HOA’s.  This is why I wanted to interview her --  you’ll say WOW like I did when I first learned about her and what she does.   This is a link to give you the basic idea of what the system is and why it is so handy for students, business people, and anyone else who needs to retain information.  And if you’re into saving paper, then this is a true match for you!  I like to think of SketchNotes as a digital white board.  http://www.core77.com/blog/sketchnotes/sketchnotes_101_the_basics_of_visual_note-taking_19678.aspSelect YES or MAYBE to get a reminder on your calendar.  It will also help mark the spot if you can’t watch live, but will want to watch the replay.  You’re in for a techy-treat!  Hope you’ll be watching! Visual Note-Taking with Sacha Chua2014-03-12 23:00:0034

Jess + Scott + You292We are just people, and just mere mortals at that. So, how can “we” [in this case meaning you and I] change the world? Peek at Google. Ya, you heard right. Google! They research and develop (R&D) innovations online and off, in the medical field, in commerce, in transportation, robotics, learning, life’s longevity and more. Much more. They [in this case meaning Googlers or employees] feel the risk is worth the reward and the falling down means learning up. For them, learning is what helps fuel opportunity which in turn leads to growth and sustainability. So how different are We-from-They or Us-from-Them? On this Jess and Scott agree: It’s not the scale that counts so much as how you feel about it and then act on how you feel. Here’s the kicker. In descending order: technology, the internet, social media and Google/G+ can now easily and effortless transfer into our hands the ability to explore our curiosity along with all the innovation and opportunity inherent in the technology. Now, how cool is that? So, do you see that going forward it’s YOU? We decide next steps and decide Is the risk worth the reward, and are we willing to fall and learn to grow? This week’s JSY! show serves up case studies drawn from a courageous group demanding change to make our point: Even though our R&D budgets are a smidge smaller than say, Google’s, it’s the culture we set in motion for ourselves and our family, work and country that can make an impact. Might even save the world. In the end, it is the you and I that chooses to jump (or not), expand (or not) and grow (or not). For small businesses and entrepreneurs this means providing new and different value for our customers.Join +Jessica Dewell +Scott Scowcroft  and +Terry Leigh Britton    as we explore innovation to create opportunity which can lead to real change. Mere mortals? We think not.YOU (the Y in JSY) take action that matters. Come explore this topic with us live or when you can (Yes, we are an evening show - so responding Yes or Maybe will set a reminder so you can catch the replay.)Hashtag: #JSY  Like the topic? Jim Shankle1,448It's always a pleasure hearing +David Amerland discuss "The GSS/G+ Connection" because it's a subject area with many facets. For mobile viewers click on this YouTube Link - MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland The time for the Event is translated to your local time zone. As a reference, it starts at 7:30 PM ET.Google Semantic Search and its direct connection to, and support by, Google+ (what I am starting to call "The GSS/G+ Connection") is remarkably deep and important. Yet David explains it with such simplicity, ease, and freshness that it's very understandable and enjoyable no matter your level of experience. Unquestionably, there is a wealth of material in this subject matter which means David will never be over-exposed or fail to peel back yet another layer of this very large onion every time he appears in an HOA.Thursday night he is joining my MBA Marketing Strategies class at John Brown University (Rogers Center in Northwest Arkansas) via Google Hangouts On Air. David will explain The GSS/G+ Connection from an MBA's and marketer's perspective. He will also introduce some unique "life applications" that should be pursued as an extension of the emerging power of GSS and Google+. Our session will start at 6:30 PM CST for those interested in seeing Marketing Strategies examined from David's unique perspective. Two facts backing my conclusion that David has struck a deep vein...1) He had 22,000 Followers when I started communicating with him 5-6 weeks ago. Today his Followers number over 150,000, and2) His game-changing book Google Semantic Search - 230 pages (including an extensive Bibliography for those who want to explore the subject even further) that mines (as David calls it) a "semantically dense" subject.Proof that GSS/G+ is a critically important subject for MBA students (everyone really) was on display last week. Friday for an enjoyable and fast-paced hour, David, +Mark Traphagen  +Ronnie Bincer   (aka "The Hangout Helper") and +martin shervington  discussed how Google+ is changing behavior on the internet - to the better - https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0n7nndld5gebbjat1of0dhb124 Even after a full hour, there were many unaddressed questions - reflecting that the session could have continued for the rest of the day. Based on the enjoyable chemistry of these four professionals, most their large audience probably would not have left them had it continued.Come join us Thursday night to continue the discussion.#mktgmba  MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland Explores "The GSS/G+ Connection" at John Brown University2013-11-08 01:30:0064

That works out to 1.4 million servers worldwide. If you bracket that and say all of the zones have 80,000 machines (which we know is not true but just to put an errorbar on... more »

If you bracket that and say all of the zones have 80,000 machines (which we know is not true but just to put an error bar on it), that would be 2.24 million machines. To make a better guess at the scale of the AWS infrastructure, you need to reckon what the distribution of datacenter counts is within those availability zones. I happen to think there are a few with one datacenter, a whole bunch with two datacenters, and then it starts tapering off by datacenter count until you hit the maximum of six datacenters per availability zone. I played around with the numbers and came up with 87 datacenters across those 28 availability zones, which averages to just a little over three datacenters per zone. If you assume an average of somewhere around 65,000 servers per datacenter, then you get this immense number: 5.64 million servers. If the average is closer to 50,000 servers per datacenter, that drops to 4.2 million machines worldwide, and if you assume fewer datacenters per availability zone – say an average of two – then you are down to 2.8 million machines. So, the answer is that AWS probably has somewhere between 2.8 million and 5.6 million servers across its infrastructure. I realize those are some pretty big error bars, but this is the data we have to work with.____

--Apple become the market leader again. (not sure what that means, exactly)(honestly, I am not trying to bait Google/Android fanboys)

Freedom
Not Money
#wealth   #valuecreationnetworks

Wealth is the ability to create freedom. Freedom, of course, is relative to who we are (or aren't) as people.
Alan Weiss, of Million Dollar Consulting fame, was the first to really expand my concepts around value creation as a means for creating wealth.
It's a significant shift in mindset from billing hourly to get money.

This is a bookend to an early post of mine, on networked capitalism in an era of increasing 'free agents' and micro-entrepreneurs.
https://plus.google.com/u/0/+GregoryEsau/posts/HRyXvUfSBtY

The more we can learn, network, collaborate and distribute our ability to co-create value, we'll get better at creating and distributing wealth.

"What you want is freedom, not money" - James Altucher

This story is from an interview by James Altucher with Tony Robbins on his new book "Money: Master the Game".

"Tony told us of one time he asked people what their goals were. One guy said, “I want to make a billion dollars!” At first this would seem like an admirable goal – set it high! There’s that horrible saying, “Aim for the moon, because even if you miss it you’ll find yourself among the stars.”

But Tony said, this guy didn’t really understand his goal.

He broke it down. “Why do you want a billion?” And the first answer was, “I want my own plane”. Tony told him, “Well a plane costs $100 million and you might only be flying 12 times a year. If you charter a yet for $30,000 an hour then it will take you forever to spend $100 million.” So suddenly the guy didn’t need $1 billion anymore. He needed $900 million.

“By the end of that session,” Tony said, “it turns out to achieve the exact lifestyle he thought he needed a billion for, he needed $10 million.” This is still a lot of money but this was Tony’s way of bringing the target closer.

When I read that in his book, I did the exercise with Claudia (James' wife). Her numbers went down by 90% when we really went through it. What happens then? You feel relief. You don’t have to be on the hamster wheel of money for your whole life. What you want is freedom, not money."

Lee Brower talks about gaining "freedom from" so that you can have the "freedom to".  He does a deeper, more discovery-focused exploration into wealth when he's coaching.  It turns out that in most cases, it is about money...and freedom.

There had to be a better way.
And there is.

But it's a leap, and a big one. While I have many well based concepts for organizations of the future, for those who want to leave their jobs, and become truly free (well, with constraints, but those parameters are highly contextual and unique to every person), the irony is for the most part, we need to be collective to be free. It's an insanely difficult paradox for people to grasp. But to be free, or find it's boundaries where we best lay, we need to be organized. Freedom for the lone wolf is rare.
Being an entrepreneur, of even a free agent, is as much about community, collaboration, partnerships, teams, networks, social skills, relationship skills as they are about any one singular business idea. No man is an island, and that has never been as true as it is today.

These ten reason to quit are compelling. They won't be compelling enough for most people. Not without a better model to quit _towards.

As we've seen with the so called "Gig Economy", the floor can drop out pretty quickly on wages/compensation. There's a million different reasons for that, but one main one is for the most part, people do not know how to create value.
Creating value increases the pie to be split.
For this everyone-is-an-entrepreneur economy to work, the one Altucher thinks we're heading towards, and advises us to head towards it, we need new models of organization and distributed. ownership.

Some of us think we're really close to bringing together the technology, and legal structures to develop those models. It's exciting, empowering, with a deep sense we can co-create that model and system where we create, execute, and have an ownership stake in means of our production. I call it networked capitalism for the creative economy.
We think it can, and will, transform how we create 'wealth', and distribute wealth.
We may be a year out or so, for those who do want to quit their jobs, and co-create their economic future.

If we understand these predictions, the choices will dwindle, jobs in the traditional sense will continue to disappear. New opportunities will emerge, for those looking for them, and preparing for them. I hope we're ready when you are. ___

This is not a criticism of Jordan's piece, far from it.
My call to arms, so to speak, has always been about how do we go about understanding what's happening, how do we adapt to it, and how do we organize around these emerging set of new economic principles.
If there is an old axiom that fits our emerging reality, it is this:
United we stand, divided we fall

This is more than a shift in economic principles, it's a shift in power. We have to understand that. We have to embrace that. We have to want this shift in power, because that power is within our grasp. With power, comes responsibility.

If we don't seize this period in time, and the old power remains, we are on the brink of a distopian police state.
If we embrace it, we are the shapers and makers of our economic future.
Meaning, for the first time in the history of technology, organization, and scaled societies, we the people can shape our economic future, and have the collaborative control over it.

The real question is: Are we ready for it? How our future shapes up is dependent on how we can answer and respond to that answer.

Is IBM's Fast Growth Enough for Relevance in Cloud Computing?

In an effort to keep up and hopefully truly compete with #cloudcomputing  leader +Amazon Web Services - +IBM has been busy.

Between wooing startups in hopes that the young companies will select +IBM Cloud Computing over AWS, to offering significant cash incentives, they have been moving fast in the world of the #cloud

But does it matter? This +gigaom article takes a look at that very question:

IBM has to offer more. It still lacks the mind share and market share of leader AWS. All of this is a good start towards winning startups over, but nowhere near enough.

I would estimate that north of 90 percent of startups default to Amazon Web Services use; some are willing to kick the tires of +Google Cloud Platform and if the startup’s brain trust comes out of the #microsoft  ecosystem, +Microsoft Azure might get a look._

Here’s IBM’s blessing and curse: It is in virtually every enterprise account in the universe in some form — so those companies will likely at least give SoftLayer/BlueMix a look. But even those companies have developers enamored of AWS and many of those new corporate applications are being tested out there by default. That gives #amazon  a powerful foothold in those accounts.

With the eight year head start that +Amazon.com has over #IBM  and everyone else, is it a case of too little, too late?

Science and Tech
Because We Can Never Get Enough
#sciencesunday

It's been a while (too long) since I've shared on of +Mark Bruce 's Sunday Digests of Sci and Tech. This one is particularly full of wholesome goodness, with my personal favourite being #5, on the role of gut bacteria on the blood barrier in the brain. gives whole new meaning to "wholesome goodness!"

Enjoy!

SciTech #ScienceSunday Digest, 47/14.
Cheaper solar, multi-state memristors, boosting photosynthesis, better robot hands, microbiome brain relationship, descriptive computer vision, aging & DNA methylation, Theranos to the masses, galactic alignment, efficient chemistries.

1. Slashing Solar Installation Costs.
A new solar panel design and installation process enables significant reductions in the price of residential installed solar panel arrays http://www.technologyreview.com/news/532731/solar-panels-that-configure-themselves/. The driving goal of the research group was to simplify the system to make it like a home appliance that didn’t need specific expertise to install and operate. The panels are flexible, come with quick-connect cables, and are attached to roofs via a special adhesive anchor that can withstand winds of up to 110 miles per hour. In some cases residential installation costs can be cut by a factor of three, and novel electronics monitors electrical performance to provide automatic safety and integration with the mains grid where required.

2. Multi-State Memristors.
A new memristor has been engineered to allow only discrete states of resistive change in response to a standard voltage stimulus and to also act as a diode http://spectrum.ieee.org/semiconductors/memory/sixstate-memristor-opens-door-to-weird-computing. Normal memristors might store one resistive value at 1 volt and another at 10 for example. This new one stores a value at 7.5v, a second one when exposed to 7.5v again, and so on up to six different states although basic improvements in resistive resolution should allow 10 discrete states to be achieved. What this device would allow you to do is create computer systems that work on base-10 memory rather than binary and allow for example 64-bit numbers to be held with 20 bits. Further miniaturisation and massive speed improvements will be needed to make this remotely viable, but in any case these multi-state memristors might find application in neuromorphic hardware.

3. Boosting Photosynthesis and Yield in Rice by 30%.
A genetically engineered strain of rice has been created that achieves a 30% increase in yield http://newswire.uark.edu/articles/25952/rice-yield-increase-of-30-percent-enabled-by-use-of-a-photosynthesis-switch-researchers-learn. The changes target a regulatory gene / protein that enhances photosynthetic activity under numerous conditions and functions as a master regulator for photosynthesis genes and other gene networks involved in photosynthetic carbon metabolism. The plants were actually greener than the controls and contained significantly more chlorophyll; it was the photosynthetic boost that directly drove increases in biomass. Given the fundamental photosynthetic mechanism it should be possible to engineer similar interventions into other crop plants and hopefully achieve similar boosts to yield.

4. Robotic Hands: Ever-More-Humanlike Capabilities.
One of the latest robotic hand demonstrations shows off some pretty amazing capabilties as part of DARPA’s Autonomous Robotic Manupulation program http://spectrum.ieee.org/robotics/humanoids/inexpensive-durable-plastic-hands-let-robots-get-a-grip. The robotic hand consists of three digits and five motors with each digit containing two links connected by a flexible tether and powered by a wire tendon. The links include embedded touch sensors, and even a pseudo-fingernail. The design allows a large range of motions and positions, allowing it to lift large (22kg) weights, pick up a telephone, pick a flat ID card or a key from a table and many other things - some of which you can see in this video: iHY Robot Hand Can Grip Anything. One of the more impressive was picking up tweezers and then manipulating the tweezers to pick up a piece of straw.

5. Intestinal Flora Changes the Blood Brain Barrier.
In news I never would have expected there is now evidence that the bacterial populations comprising our intestinal flora can have an influence on the integrity of the blood brain barrier http://neurosciencenews.com/blood-brain-barrier-gut-microbiota-1558/. The evidence comes in the form of mice that either (i) developed normally with exposure and colonisation to bacteria and didn’t develop a compromised blood brain barrier, and (ii) were in a sterile environment and not not exposed to bacteria and developed a leaky, compromised blood brain barrier as confirmed by labelled antibodies (large molecules not normally able to get into the brain) that managed to cross into the brain. The leakiness was maintained until the mice received a fecal transplant containing normal bacteria. This is an interesting indicative study but the question now arises for humans and of course factors that affect our microbiome having an impact on our mental health and function.

6. Computer Vision Getting Better at Describing Photos.
Machine learning keeps making strides in computer vision with a new system able to describe objects in the scene and put them into context http://news.stanford.edu/news/2014/november/computer-vision-algorithm-111814.html. The system builds on prior systems that learn from visual dictionaries by also incorporating a dictionary of scenes as training material. Analysing patterns in these pictures and then applied what it had learned to new and unknown images to both identify individual objects and also provide basic context as to what those objects were doing, for example, labelling appropriate images as dog lies on rug or boy stands near cow. Improved visual search and robotics tools should be just the start of applications for these capabilities.

7. More Evidence for the Role of DNA Methylation in Aging.
A study of DNA methylation patterns found age-related differences in 8% of tested sites, although only 5% of these sites were found to be associated with altered gene expression; interestingly 42 of these sites were found to be associated pulse pressure, which is known to change with age https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2014/11/increasing-interest-in-dna-methylation-in-aging.php. While the study suggests that most methylation changes are unrelated to changes in gene expression, those methylation changes that are linked to altered gene expression are indeed potential drivers of the negative effects of aging. Work like this is important both for creating better tests to diagnose the functional age of a cell or tissue and also for identifying targets and sites in an aging genome for possible reversal of methylation changes and the restoration of youthful, healthy gene expression profiles.

8. Theranos Executes and Distributes to Pharmacies.
I’ve previously covered the company Theranos and their next-generation microfluidic blood testing technology that can run a battery of 70 different blood tests on a finger prick of blood from a patient. The news this week was that they hadn’t fallen by the wayside but had actually executed in launching their product and technology into the marketplace with the pharmacy chain Walgreens http://www.engadget.com/2014/11/18/walgreens-blood-tests/?ncid=rss_truncated. That’s great news for the adoption of this technology and for getting it into the hands of as many people as possible - also promising implications for more tests and cheaper technology in future. Ideally these tests won’t be carried out only when you’re sick, but rather every single day, especially as personalised medicine matures.

9. Galactic Alignment Across Billions of Light-Years.
Observations of quasars (very active galaxies thought to be powered by black holes) reveal that their rotations are aligned parallel to one another over many billions of light years, and also with the large-scale structure of the cosmic web http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso1438/. Alignment with the cosmic web was a prediction from theoretical models of the the evolution and development of the Universe and these observations provide the first observational evidence to support those models. The additional alignment on scales larger than this was not predicted by the models and suggest that they are as yet incomplete.

10. Making Chemistry More Lego-Like.
A new Lego-like chemical synthesis method involves the creation of chemical building blocks that are carefully designed so that the first reaction generates a product that is perfectly primed for the second reaction and so on http://news.anu.edu.au/2014/11/18/finding-new-ways-to-make-drugs/. This allows efficient synthesis of large and complex molecules and the proof-of-concept for the technique involved the efficient synthesis of a complex anti-inflammatory drug, which was computed on a large super-computer-based simulator beforehand to provide confidence that it would in fact work. In some cases the technique requires only half as many synthetic steps. Having been involved in projects needing to develop synthetic pathways for complex organic chemicals myself I can appreciate how much time and effort this might save people.

I know that I have been a bit harsh on Uber, but it's one of those startups that get so much attention for all the wrong reasons. It's in no way a shining example of crowdsourcing. It's more of a black sheep.

This morning, Business Insider posted a leaked presentation detailing Uber's actual revenue for the Month of December 2013. And we can use that to see exactly how much money Uber's drivers are actually making.

Uber themselves claims that their drivers earn an average of $93,000 per year, but no journalist has yet been able to get even close to that. And this leaked presentation doesn't get any closer either.

http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-revenue-rides-drivers-and-fares-2014-11?op=1

For instance, we can simply look at the revenue for December for each of the big cities, and divide that with the number of drivers. This gives us the average revenue per driver.

The number we end up with $3,200 per month, per driver (on average). That's about $40,000, or half of what Uber claims in their PR releases.

But we are talking overall revenue here, not what the drivers take home. Of this we have to deduct the revenue share that goes to Uber, and then we have the massive costs of the drivers who have to supply their own cars, their own insurance, their own gas, their own vacation pay, healthcare, and their own maintenance. This makes up about 65% of their income.

The result is that each driver, on average (using Uber's own data), only earns $1,000 a month. That's what's left over when all those expenses have been paid.

There is one element missing here, of course. Some drivers work full-time while others only work part-time, which skews the numbers.

So, let's look at 'fare per driver hour' which average around $20 according to Uber's presentation. And once again we take out Uber's share and the cost for the driver, and we are left with a salary of about $6-$8 per hour actively working.

Now, this is not exactly worse than the Taxi companies, who have long had a reputation of very poor salaries. We often hear about Taxi drivers having to work 12-hour shifts and from that barely earn the minimum wage. But it does mean that Uber as a company is not a better model. It's a better concept than regular taxis, but it's not a better model.

And my problem with this, as an analyst, is that Uber today is riding on a wave 'startup buzz'. People are excited about them because it's new, it's tech, it's Silicon Valley, and it's backed by tech VCs. And they are different and feel fresh. But when the driver's salaries are as bad as those of the taxi companies, and working conditions being just as brutal, this 'buzz' won't last.

So, to me, I think that Uber in the future will be seen the same way as we today look regular taxi companies. They will have the same kind of problems, the same lack passions, and the same 'we don't really trust you' kind of feel to them.

We can already see the start of this today.

Uber is not really solving anything. They are changing a few things about how we order and pay for a ride. But down the line... it's just the same old.

This also links to all these stories we see like "Uber will be the future of public transit". No they won't. Their model is completely unsustainable compared to buses and subways.

BTW: This is not about Uber either. Other ride-sharing concepts have the same problem. Companies like Lyft might be run by more ethical executives, but they too are not creating a new form of transportation that is financially better than the taxis.

We are not really moving forward here. Sure, it's great that we now have an app, and that paying for the ride is automatic. It's also great that drivers and passengers are ranked. But underlining problems with transporting people are the same as always.

If we really want to solve the problem, we have to find a way to dramatically remove some of the cost. ___The Parasite Economy

I'm sure the parasitic asshats who run Uber are still making money hand over fist, with their syphon model, but wow, do they ever suck at understanding the service economy in this decade, and how social media just might not take kindly to their tactics.

Nicely curated, from +Alex Schleber

*There are some fascinating PR/Propaganda angles to this whole Uber story roiling for a few days now...*

"...When Uber spokeswoman Nairi Hourdajian assured Buzzfeed that the company “does not do ‘oppo research’ of any sort on journalists, and has never considered doing it,” her casual use of the familiar term “oppo” gives us another clear sign that this is a company that is perfectly comfortable with the phrase, and its meaning."

Definitely some heavy #sociopathchess  going on, and it looks like Uber investor Ashton Kutcher also walked straight into it, needlessly damaging his own brand for Uber...

I'll add, this isn't about consensus or 'democracy'.
It is leveraging the depth and breadth of wisdom, experience, insights, diversity, perspectives, and angles of the group, for one or possibly more people to make the very best possible decision, and using the networks of the group to execute the decision.
Depending on the situation, and nature of the organization, two or more groups can split off to form experimental implementations, that may or may not supersede the leader's initiative.
Feedback loops, and consequent 'swarms' can either weave the experiments into the initial leaders plan, or abandon it altogether in favour of the more successful experiments.

#valuecreationnetworks   #Glia   #ecosystems

This is a terrific article value networks, and why businesses need to be embedded in them.
Value networks are then what becomes an ecosystem. As I have written before, eventually (ten years, maybe less) all businesses will need to be a part of an ecosystem (or in the case of Google, etc, they are the ecosystem) in order to remain functionally competitive. The network effects within the ecosystem, and the collective branding, will out compete the lone wolves on the outside.

The transition to a circular economy can only be achieved if businesses are prepared to engage and collaborate with competitors in the form of 'value networks' which will help scale-up ideas and bring more sustainable products to market.___Value Networks

Basic elements of cognition have been identified in the behaviour displayed by animal collectives, ranging from honeybee swarms to human societies. For example, an insect swarm is often considered a “super-organism” that appears to exhibit cognitive behaviour as a result of the interactions among the individual insects and between the insects and the environment.
The discussions we have presented depict Swarm Cognition as an intriguing framework for future investigation on cognitive systems. We started from the observation that cognitive processes can be supported by distributed systems, be they composed of a multitude of insects or a population of neurons. Swarm Cognition therefore promotes the study of cognition as an emergent collective phenomenon.

I have known many of Uber’s key investors and founders personally for six to ten years. Over that time I’ve seen an ever-worsening frat culture where sexist jokes and a blind eye here-or-there have developed into a company where the worst kind of smearing and objectification of women is A-ok. It’s impossible to prove that Kalanick directly ordered things like slut-shaming female passengers or the creepy Lyon ad — and, to be clear, there’s no evidence he was personally involved in either of those scandals — but let’s be clear: The acceptance of this kind of behavior comes from the top.

The Byzantine Generals Problem
Why Bitcoin Matters

Marc Andreessen comes up with a pretty clever way of explaining why Bitcoin and the blockchain technology matters.

Bitcoin is the first practical solution to a longstanding problem in computer science called the Byzantine Generals Problem. To quote from the original paper defining the B.G.P.: “[Imagine] a group of generals of the Byzantine army camped with their troops around an enemy city. Communicating only by messenger, the generals must agree upon a common battle plan. However, one or more of them may be traitors who will try to confuse the others. The problem is to find an algorithm to ensure that the loyal generals will reach agreement.”

The problem is to find an algorithm to ensure that the loyal generals will reach agreement.”

More generally, the B.G.P. poses the question of how to establish trust between otherwise unrelated parties over an untrusted network like the Internet.

The practical consequence of solving this problem is that Bitcoin gives us, for the first time, a way for one Internet user to transfer a unique piece of digital property to another Internet user, such that the transfer is guaranteed to be safe and secure, everyone knows that the transfer has taken place, and nobody can challenge the legitimacy of the transfer. The consequences of this breakthrough are hard to overstate.___

Bitcoin, and the blockchain technology is looking very much like the next great evolutionary leap in money for reducing friction, increasing trust and transparency for the networked organizations in the digital age.

I'm not sure the pendulum has quite reached the far end of the right, but hopefully so, and it can start swinging back towards a world where we can all better prosper.

I like Michael Lewis' latest piece, about how happiness comes more from giving than from getting more, and that that is a lesson that is most needed by the very  rich.  He discusses it in the context of personal happiness, but also with regard to politics:

"The grotesque inequality between the haves and the have-nots is seldom framed as a problem that the haves might privately help to resolve. Instead, it is a problem the have-nots must persuade their elected officials to do something about, presumably against the wishes of the haves."___Aaaaaah, Yup

What does famed VC +Fred Wilson , of Union Square Ventures open his talk with, on future, defining trends? The future of organization.
And he does a brilliant job of explaining why the old model worked when it did, and what is changing so quickly as to why we need new organizational models.

I feel the tension, between what was, and what can be, so deeply, I can cut it with a knife.
With the Glia design and architecture, I firmly believe we have a system fills this growing need and purpose for next generational organizational models, systems, and philosophy.
My biggest challenge right now is getting the Glia design in front of the right people, so we can start developing it, and pulling the right businesses and people into its ecosystem, and slowly or quickly adopting the OS.

This is one of the better talks on coming disruptions in the next ten years. Making big broad predictions as Fred Wilson does is very hard to do well. (I know because I try to do this myself.) I really like Fred's framework, which I agree with 100%. His comments at the end are probably the most interesting, because they are not so obvious.  His talk was done almost a year ago, which is even more impressive.___Glia

Bang on as usual, +Gideon Rosenblatt .
One thing that has always bother me about so much popularized science fiction in movies (and/or now video games) is it almost always is distopian. How much of that influences the nature of technology is hard to say, but I would sure like to see movies and video games that show how much we can use machine learning, augmented intelligence, big data, etc, along with all collective human intelligence to build much more desirable environments in which to live and work.
I hope you are right, in that most coders are not just about the money, and really want to work on things of worthwhile purpose and value.

The Republic of Facebookistan
The Case for the Next Generation of Social Networks
#thefourthestate   #socialmedia

An excellent look at the state of Facebookistan. This was all but inevitable, when you combine Wall St with Silicon Valley.
I still have this vague hope, the people will wake up. Occupy Wall St offered a brief glimmer of hope, one that dims by the day.
In an era of seemingly unlimited access to baubles and trinkets, and an internet awash with ignorance of unimaginable scale, that hope dims by the day.
Twenty years ago, I felt the internet offered us our best way out. It's looks now like people were baited into a trap of their own making.

'Ask an internet platform spokesperson why his or her firm made nearly any decision, and you’ll hear some variation on “to improve user experience.” But we all know that it’s only a certain kind of user experience that is really valued, and promoted. For Facebook to continue to meet Wall Street’s demands for growth, its user base must grow and/or individual users must become more “productive.” Predictive analytics demands standardization: forecastable estimates of revenue-per-user. The more a person clicks on ads and buys products, the better. Secondarily, the more a person draws other potential ad-clickers in–via clicked-on content, catalyzing discussions, crying for help, whatever–the more valuable they become to the platform. The “model users” gain visibility, subtly instructing by example how to act on the network. They’ll probably never attain the notoriety of a Lei Feng, but the Republic of Facebookistan gladly pays them the currency of attention, as long as the investment pays off for top managers and shareholders.

As more people understand the implications of enjoying Facebook “for free“–i.e., that they are the product of the service–they also see that its real paying customers are advertisers. As N. Katherine Hayles has stated, the critical question here is: “will ubiquitous computing be coopted as a stalking horse for predatory capitalism, or can we seize the opportunity” to deploy more emancipatory uses of it?  I have expressed faith in the latter possibility, but Facebook continually validates Julie Cohen’s critique of a surveillance-innovation complex. The experiment fiasco is just the latest in a long history of ethically troubling decisions at that firm, and several others like it.

Unfortunately, many in Silicon Valley still barely get what the fuss is about. For them, A/B testing is simply a way of life. There are some revealing similarities between casinos and major internet platforms. As Rob Horning observes, Social media platforms are engineered to be sticky . . . Like video slots, which incite extended periods of “time-on-machine” to assure “continuous gaming productivity” (i.e. money extraction from players), social-media sites are designed to maximize time-on-site, to make their users more valuable to advertisers . . . and to ratchet up user productivity in the form of data sharing and processing that social-media sites reserve the rights to.” That’s one reason we get headlines like “Teens Can’t Stop Using Facebook Even Though They Hate It.” There are sociobiological routes to conditioning action. The platforms are constantly shaping us, based on sophisticated psychological profiles.

The characteristics of Facebook’s model (i.e., exemplary) users in many ways reflect the constraints on the model users in the company–i.e., the data scientists who try to build stylized versions of reality (models) based on certain data points and theories. The Facebook emotion experiment is part of a much larger reshaping of social science. To what extent will academics study data driven firms like Facebook, and to what extent will they try to join forces with its own researchers to study others?

Present incentives are clear: collaborate with (rather than develop a critical theory of) big data firms.  As Zeynep Tufekci puts it, “the most valuable datasets have become corporate and proprietary [and] top journals love publishing from them.”  “Big data” has an aura of scientific validity simply because of the velocity, volume, and variety of the phenomena it encompasses. Psychologists certainly must have learned something from looking at over 600,000 accounts’ activity, right?

The problem, though is that the corporate “science” of manipulation is a far cry from academic science’s ethics of openness and reproducibility. That’s already led to some embarrassments in the crossover from corporate to academic modeling (such as Google’s flu trends failures). Researchers within Facebook worried about multiple experiments being performed at once on individual users, which might compromise the results of any one study. Standardized review could have prevented that. But, true to the Silicon Valley ethic of “move fast and break things,” speed was paramount: “There’s no review process. Anyone…could run a test…trying to alter peoples’ behavior,” said one former Facebook data scientist.

Why are journals so interested in this form of research? Why are academics jumping on board? Fortunately, social science has matured to the point that we now have a robust, insightful literature about the nature of social science itself[...] One of Isaac’s major contributions in that piece is to interpret the social science coming out of the academy (and entities like RAND) as acultural practice: “Insofar as theories involve certain forms of practice, they are caught up in worldly, quotidian matters: performances, comportments, training regimes, and so on.” Government leveraged funding to mobilize research to specific ends. To maintain university patronage systems and research centers, leaders had to be on good terms with the grantors. The common goal of strengthening the US economy (and defeating the communist threat) cemented an ideological alliance.

Government still exerts influence in American social and behavioral sciences. But private industry controls critical data sets for the most glamorous, data-driven research. In the Cold War era, “grant getting” may have been the key to economic security, and to securing one’s voice in the university. Today, “exit” options are more important than voice, and what better place to exit to than an internet platform? Thus academic/corporate “flexians” shuttle between the two worlds. Their research cannot be too venal, lest the academy disdain it. But neither can it indulge in, say, critical theory (what would nonprofit social networks look like), just as Cold War social scientists were ill-advised to, say, develop Myrdal’s or Leontief’s theories. There was a lot more money available for the Friedmanite direction economics would, eventually, take.

It is very hard to develop categories and kinds for internet firms, because they are so secretive about most of their operations. (And make no mistake about the current PR kerfuffle for Facebook: it will lead the company to become ever more secretive about its data science, just as Target started camouflaging its pregnancy-related ads and not talking to reporters after people appeared creeped out by the uncanny accuracy of its natal predictions.) But the data collection of the firms is creating whole new kinds of people—for marketers, for the NSA, and for anyone with the money or connections to access the information.'___The Republic of Facebookistan
