ISOOSI Research Engine3,477Roles and Stories in Effective Marketing with Dr. Mani Saint-Victor ( +Mani Scienide ) and +Chris Lang In our last show we discussed how words shape brands, both to those within, and without the company.  Building from that understanding of words, tone, voice, this week we go to the Customer's story and how we find and play our role in that story. Its fine to define ourselves to ourselves, in a fixed context of simply describing who we are, what our mission is, and similar things... But how does that matter to the potential customer who is wrapped up in their own problems right now?  How do we present ourselves in relation to a specific issue and mindset without losing any of that true definition of ourselves. In this episode we'll revise the importance of 'story', but from the perspective of the customer's story rather than our own.  We'll discuss how we fit ourselves into a vital and needed role in that story, and how to play that role effectively, powerfully, believable, and above all, truthfully.LinksG+ Hangout Event: http://isoo.si/Ab23DWatch on YouTube: http://isoo.si/t3B2SMain Comment stream: http://isoo.si/Ab23DRelated recommended reading: http://isoo.si/q5FWnJoin our wonderful guests +Mani Scienide and +Chris Lang, the   #isoosichat   regulars +Ammon Johns, +Bill Slawski and +ISOOSI Research EngineRoles and Stories in Effective Marketing2014-07-01 21:00:0074

For our first show we are starting really basic. Meloney Hall3,180Teacher Says, “ Okay, class --  you better take notes for this lesson.”Fifteen students take notes vigorously as they try to keep up with writing cursive on their lined notebook paper.Eight Students do not take any notes at all.  They might ask for someone’s notes later. One Student draws doodles as a form of note-taking.  She gets laughed at and told to “grow-up” and take notes the right way.  I’m kind of embarrassed I listened to those peers; I need to gain those skills again!  So much easier to retain the information when you can draw pictures with your written notes (printed, not cursive). How about the Digital Way of taking notes today?  That’s what +Sacha Chua  will be showing us during the HOA broadcast with me.  I will be interviewing Sacha Chua on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT about how she uses SketchNotes for taking notes in a digital format.  Free-flow handwriting and techy all at the same time!  She’s a woman in science and technology, so she really loves gadgets!  She uses SketchNotes, and it’s really very fascinating!  Watching her do them LIVE is really the best!  I know Sacha as a fellow HelpOuts Provider, and I have seen her do this for many HOA’s.  This is why I wanted to interview her --  you’ll say WOW like I did when I first learned about her and what she does.   This is a link to give you the basic idea of what the system is and why it is so handy for students, business people, and anyone else who needs to retain information.  And if you’re into saving paper, then this is a true match for you!  I like to think of SketchNotes as a digital white board.  http://www.core77.com/blog/sketchnotes/sketchnotes_101_the_basics_of_visual_note-taking_19678.aspSelect YES or MAYBE to get a reminder on your calendar.  It will also help mark the spot if you can’t watch live, but will want to watch the replay.  You’re in for a techy-treat!  Hope you’ll be watching! Visual Note-Taking with Sacha Chua2014-03-12 23:00:0034

Jess + Scott + You298We are just people, and just mere mortals at that. So, how can “we” [in this case meaning you and I] change the world? Peek at Google. Ya, you heard right. Google! They research and develop (R&D) innovations online and off, in the medical field, in commerce, in transportation, robotics, learning, life’s longevity and more. Much more. They [in this case meaning Googlers or employees] feel the risk is worth the reward and the falling down means learning up. For them, learning is what helps fuel opportunity which in turn leads to growth and sustainability. So how different are We-from-They or Us-from-Them? On this Jess and Scott agree: It’s not the scale that counts so much as how you feel about it and then act on how you feel. Here’s the kicker. In descending order: technology, the internet, social media and Google/G+ can now easily and effortless transfer into our hands the ability to explore our curiosity along with all the innovation and opportunity inherent in the technology. Now, how cool is that? So, do you see that going forward it’s YOU? We decide next steps and decide Is the risk worth the reward, and are we willing to fall and learn to grow? This week’s JSY! show serves up case studies drawn from a courageous group demanding change to make our point: Even though our R&D budgets are a smidge smaller than say, Google’s, it’s the culture we set in motion for ourselves and our family, work and country that can make an impact. Might even save the world. In the end, it is the you and I that chooses to jump (or not), expand (or not) and grow (or not). For small businesses and entrepreneurs this means providing new and different value for our customers.Join +Jessica Dewell +Scott Scowcroft  and +Terry Leigh Britton    as we explore innovation to create opportunity which can lead to real change. Mere mortals? We think not.YOU (the Y in JSY) take action that matters. Come explore this topic with us live or when you can (Yes, we are an evening show - so responding Yes or Maybe will set a reminder so you can catch the replay.)Hashtag: #JSY  Like the topic? Jim Shankle1,484It's always a pleasure hearing +David Amerland discuss "The GSS/G+ Connection" because it's a subject area with many facets. For mobile viewers click on this YouTube Link - MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland The time for the Event is translated to your local time zone. As a reference, it starts at 7:30 PM ET.Google Semantic Search and its direct connection to, and support by, Google+ (what I am starting to call "The GSS/G+ Connection") is remarkably deep and important. Yet David explains it with such simplicity, ease, and freshness that it's very understandable and enjoyable no matter your level of experience. Unquestionably, there is a wealth of material in this subject matter which means David will never be over-exposed or fail to peel back yet another layer of this very large onion every time he appears in an HOA.Thursday night he is joining my MBA Marketing Strategies class at John Brown University (Rogers Center in Northwest Arkansas) via Google Hangouts On Air. David will explain The GSS/G+ Connection from an MBA's and marketer's perspective. He will also introduce some unique "life applications" that should be pursued as an extension of the emerging power of GSS and Google+. Our session will start at 6:30 PM CST for those interested in seeing Marketing Strategies examined from David's unique perspective. Two facts backing my conclusion that David has struck a deep vein...1) He had 22,000 Followers when I started communicating with him 5-6 weeks ago. Today his Followers number over 150,000, and2) His game-changing book Google Semantic Search - 230 pages (including an extensive Bibliography for those who want to explore the subject even further) that mines (as David calls it) a "semantically dense" subject.Proof that GSS/G+ is a critically important subject for MBA students (everyone really) was on display last week. Friday for an enjoyable and fast-paced hour, David, +Mark Traphagen  +Ronnie Bincer   (aka "The Hangout Helper") and +martin shervington  discussed how Google+ is changing behavior on the internet - to the better - https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0n7nndld5gebbjat1of0dhb124 Even after a full hour, there were many unaddressed questions - reflecting that the session could have continued for the rest of the day. Based on the enjoyable chemistry of these four professionals, most their large audience probably would not have left them had it continued.Come join us Thursday night to continue the discussion.#mktgmba  MBA Marketing Strategies - David Amerland Explores "The GSS/G+ Connection" at John Brown University2013-11-08 01:30:0064

Bounded Rationality
And Artificial Intelligence
#rationalagents

In light of a few recent threads, conversations, thrashes, meta-dialogue and the like recently around "artificial intelligence", I've been poking around looking for some kind of parameters to frame future discussions.
This paper does a pretty neat job, bringing in some work from economics on the bounded rationality in humans, with a bit of an overview of the field of AI, and a dab of autonomous agents navigating an environment.

#business   #organization   #Glia

This highlights two aspects I am fanatical about within the Glia Ecosystem culture. Focus is on solving customers problems. How we organize people, knowledge and resources is the defining competitive advantage of this era.
Zhang Ruimin is my kind of CEO

_But Zhang has never accepted limitations—including the definition of Haier as just a manufacturing firm—as permanent. Today, the company is repositioning itself as a provider of solutions to consumers’ problems, selling not just home appliances (refrigerators, washers and dryers, entertainment electronics, and air and water conditioners are among its major lines) but also services including water safety information and other guidance designed to improve the quality of life for consumers in China and other emerging economies. To maintain that identity, Zhang has steadily initiated shifts in the company’s structure, moving consistently toward participative management, decentralized decision making, and autonomous but accountable work teams and platforms. _

_That’s the eternal question. I’ll say just one simple thing: Never follow only a single road. [In his 1939 book Business Cycles: A Theoretical, Historical, and Statistical Analysis of the Capitalist Process (McGraw-Hill)] Joseph Schumpeter defined innovation as the reorganization of the factors of production. You and your rivals have access to virtually all the same resources. Only by constantly thinking of new ways to reorganize these factors can you differentiate yourself. It’s like poker. Everyone has the same number of cards. It’s how you play your hand that matters. _

Calling the financial industry of Wall Street parasites is not just rabble rousing rhetoric. It's a fact. The big financials are not economic creators. They are, in essence, a giant vampire vacuum that sucks blood out of the real economy, funnelling it to an every smaller body elite.

In perhaps the starkest illustration, economists from Harvard University and the University of Chicago wrote in a recent paper that every dollar a worker earns in a research field spills over to make the economy $5 better off. Every dollar a similar worker earns in finance comes with a drain, making the economy 60 cents worse off.

Well, it ain’t any more. It has been obvious for some time that the great age of magazine journalism is coming to an end, and also that it is not just the Internet that is killing it.

Plutocrats have always been a self-regarding bunch, but it is obvious that the species of zillionaire that subsidizes magazine journalism today suffer from a form of upper-class delusion that was unknown just 50 years ago. This is because they now know that they are not merely people who got lucky; they are geniuses—everyone tells them so. Chris Hughes, breaker of the New Republic, earned his millions by being Mark Zuckerberg’s college roommate, but nevertheless he was one of the most celebrated figures in publishing a short while ago. When he and his handpicked CEO lapse into indecipherable management talk, they apparently mean it. That’s not a Dilbert joke; that’s the language of genius. (According to a recent story by Chris Lehmann, the same sort of thing goes on at First Look, a troubled journalistic project launched by a different Internet mogul.)___

First, we need to stop feasting on each other, and stop finding our divides, and start building bridges.

Few companies, though, have made much progress in eradicating them.  Most of the recommended remedies—idea wikis, business incubators, online collaboration, design thinking, “authentic” leadership, et al—are no more than minor tweaks.  They are unlikely to be any more effective than the dozens of “fixes” that came before them. Remember T-groups, total quality management, skunk works, high performance teams, “intrapreneurship,” re-engineering, the learning organization, communities of practice, knowledge management, and customer centricity?  All of these were timely, and a few genuinely helpful, but none of them rendered organizations fundamentally more adaptable, innovative or engaging.  Band-Aids®, braces and bariatric surgery don’t fix genetic disorders.

To build organizations that are fit for the future, we have to go deeper, much deeper. When confronted by unprecedented challenges, like an inflection in the pace of change, the most important things to think about are the things we never think about—the taken for granted assumptions that are to us as unremarkable as water is to fish.  The performance of any social system (be it a government, a religious denomination or a corporation), is ultimately limited by the paradigmatic beliefs of its members; by the core tenets that have been encapsulated in creeds and reified in structures.

Reflect for a moment on the development of constitutional democracy.  Ancient and medieval societies were predicated on the “divine right of kings.”  The sovereign was answerable only to God and royal edicts could not be countermanded.  Society was ordered in descending ranks of royal privilege and everyone from dukes to peasants “knew their place.”  To most of those who lived in this pre-democratic world, the idea of self-government would have been ludicrous, if it could have been imagined at all.  Thankfully, a few brave souls like William Penn, Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry not only imagined self-government, but devoted their lives to making it a reality.  Today it’s the imperial alternative that’s unthinkable.___

The wealth generated in Silicon Valley is “as prodigious as it has ever been,” says Russell Hancock, president of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, a nonprofit group that promotes regional development. “But when we used to have booms in the tech sector, it would lift all boats. That’s not how it works anymore. And suddenly you’re seeing a backlash and people are upset.” Indeed, people are stoning buses transporting Google employees to work from their homes in San Francisco.

The World's Dumbest Idea

The World’s Dumbest Idea
by James Montier - GMO
#shareholdervalue

When it comes to bad ideas, finance certainly offers up an embarrassment of riches – CAPM, Efficient Market Hypothesis, Beta, VaR, portfolio insurance, tail risk hedging, smart beta, leverage, structured finance products, benchmarks, hedge funds, risk premia, and risk parity to name but a few. Whilst I have expressed my ire at these concepts and poured scorn upon many of these ideas over the years, they aren’t the topic of this paper. Rather in this essay I want to explore the problems that surround the concept of shareholder value and its maximization.

I’m aware that expressing skepticism over this topic is a little like criticizing motherhood and apple pie. I grew up in the U.K. watching a wonderful comedian named Kenny Everett. Amongst his many comic creations was a U.S. Army general whose solution to those who “didn’t like Apple Pie on Sundays, and didn’t love their mothers” was
“to round them up, put them in a field, and bomb the bastards,” so it is with no small amount of trepidation that I embark on this critique.

Before you dismiss me as a raving “red under the bed,” you might be surprised to know that I am not alone in questioning the mantra of shareholder value maximization. Indeed the title of this essay is taken from a direct quotation from none other than that stalwart of the capitalist system, Jack Welch. In an interview in the Financial Times from March 2009, Welch said “Shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.”

#criticalthinkingskills   #legacysystems   #mentalmodels   #change   #echochambers   #socialmedia

This is a wonderfully woven piece from +Gunther Sonnenfeld that so neatly circles the squares of some of my previous posts today.

If we are to escape the immense gravitational pull of the retardant legacy models, mindsets, and systems of the previous centuries, we all have to look in the mirror and ask ourselves are we part of the retardant past? What part of our thinking, our belief systems are really just anchors to a past we need to leave behind, if we are to make the most of the opportunities ahead?

"...it could mean that our beliefs tend not to thread the needle between imagination and reality very well, and therefore, ‘reason’ is simply a by-product of the machinations we undergo to affect some sort of a desired outcome."

#legacymodels

This is more than a story about almost comical tragedy that is the history of the Port Authority, it's a microcosm of the kind of legacy systems and thinking that is holding back an evolutionary revolution in advancing our societies.

This is the second of three posts via +David Amerland  here, +Alex Schleber in another, and +John Verdon in a third, I came across today that hit on the same theme.

To See The World in PABT a Grain of Sand....

The original Port Authority designers did not anticipate long-term requirements. Robert Moses did his best to destroy it. The economic downturn of the 1970s made crime rampant. The 80s boom ignored social problems. And now, the impossible maintenance costs of a 1.5 million square foot structure with a bad reputation burdens everyone.

This reads like a whodunnit for the 20th century and the world we've inherited. Check it out. ___The Beat Goes On...

What’s happening with Docker and CoreOS today is not new or surprising, and has been happening since the dawn of computing. The locus of the ability to differentiate is shifting and there is a fight over who is going to hold that ability. Much like the puck in ice hockey, profit is captured by those who skate to where the value is going to be.

[...]

Viewed from the perspective of modularity and integration, we can see that Docker containers are designed to be the point of integration that everything else synchronises around. Docker takes the operating system, virtual machine, physical machine, and server operator below them, and commoditises them. It also provides a set of APIs that others can use to build on top of them. One part Docker doesn’t commoditise is the data centre, we’ll get to why that’s notable soon.

From a developer’s perspective, running your applications in Docker containers lets you treat the cloud services they run on as modular, replacable commodities. This is great because you can (in theory) move to another cloud service provider if you’re not happy with the deal you’re getting at your current one. This isn’t great for Amazon, Google or the other cloud providers, as being a commodity is a quick path to a low margin business. The value has moved from the cloud service providers providing the VMs, to the containers running on top of them.

Containers are great, but you need more than just containers to run your applications. Very quickly, a number of companies sprung up to build on top of Docker’s modular containers and provide differentiated, integrated services. The most well known of these is CoreOS. CoreOS provides a stripped down version of Linux and tools to run Docker containers over a cluster of machines. They abstract away virtual machines, and Docker containers, replacing both with a single cluster, commoditising the data centre in the process. The value has moved again, from Docker containers, into the integrated services on top of Docker. Whether they’ll admit it or not, CoreOS and similar services are a threat to cloud service providers; they commoditise the cloud providers by building an integrated platform on top of them.

Given the threats to their business it wasn’t a surprise that Amazon and Google recently launched new container engine services to manage and orchestrate Docker containers. These services attempt to recapture the value by integrating Docker container management on top of their commodity computing infrastructure. Something not explained by this theory is Google open sourcing Kubernetes their container cluster management tool. I’m still thinking about why they did that and its implications.

Where does this leave Docker? From the beginning they have been a modular component for others to build on. This is great for others, but not so great for Docker, as they are by definition undifferentiated and capture very little value. Becoming a commodity is not a great way to make a living, and certainly not going to provide the 100x return on investment that Docker’s investors are looking for.

With +Fred Wilson 's Union Square Ventures behind this, it has a better than average chance of sticking, and establishing some kind of standardization.
Does this, or will this hit the sweet spot between chaos and order? We'll see, but a certain amount of standardization is necessary to make something useful to society and business.

One, familiar to most Western industrialized societies, is the haves don't what to risk their "have" in order to further the growth of the have nots. More interesting, in a, um, communist society built on capitalism. And a storyline that's sure to get a lot more interesting.

Two, state owned monopolies. This isn't a matter of state enterprise verses private enterprise. There's a lot of deep rooted fundamental issues around debt, how 'banks' fund development, that are problematic. It's been identified as an Achilles Heel by some, and I tend to be on that side of the fence.
The other part of the equation, is centralization and politics over who gets credit, and who doesn't. And more so, who can benefit from that dynamic. China's banking system has to reform, whether private, and foreign interests can do that within the complex Chinese culture of business is a crap shoot. Either way, something has to give. It's a huge unknown, and not one that is manageable to a predictable, secure outcome. Pain will happen.

Real estate bubbles. See issue one. Without bringing in much more of the population who can afford to buy property and service loans, supply has well outstripped demand.

As the Chinese curse says, May we live in interesting times. ___

Every day, AWS installs enough server infrastructure to host the entire Amazon e-tailing business from back in 2004, when Amazon the retailer was one-tenth its current size at $7 billion in annual revenue.

*Let’s do some math here. Assume that AWS had 28 availability zones with one datacenter each with only 50,000 servers each. That is the minimum capacity that the AWS infrastructure can have. That works out to 1.4 million servers worldwide. If you bracket that and say all of the zones have 80,000 machines (which we know is not true but just to put an error bar on it), that would be 2.24 million machines. To make a better guess at the scale of the AWS infrastructure, you need to reckon what the distribution of datacenter counts is within those availability zones. I happen to think there are a few with one datacenter, a whole bunch with two datacenters, and then it starts tapering off by datacenter count until you hit the maximum of six datacenters per availability zone. I played around with the numbers and came up with 87 datacenters across those 28 availability zones, which averages to just a little over three datacenters per zone. If you assume an average of somewhere around 65,000 servers per datacenter, then you get this immense number: 5.64 million servers. If the average is closer to 50,000 servers per datacenter, that drops to 4.2 million machines worldwide, and if you assume fewer datacenters per availability zone – say an average of two – then you are down to 2.8 million machines. So, the answer is that AWS probably has somewhere between 2.8 million and 5.6 million servers across its infrastructure. I realize those are some pretty big error bars, but this is the data we have to work with.____
