David Bowden37,155Its been awhile....For over three years I collected and shared an exclusive B&W circle. This circle "was" one of the most shared on G+ for awhile. I would share it once a month with everyone as a part of my personal desire to share more quality B&W images and photographers. The requirement for being in this circle was that the photographer shot at least 60% B&W images (I tend to shoot 80%).There are some excellent photographers and friends here. I encourage you to take a look at their work. While I know that bulk circle sharing is a thing of the past or no longer the norm on G+ (which is a shame) I wanted to re-share a collection of truly inspirational people. You wont be disappointed. Re-share if you like their work</david>2014-05-06 23:16:1649012223

Stephan Spelde8,664My Inspirational CircleEver since I joined Google plus in the end of the year 2011 I have been looking for those special ones. Those people that inspired me...touched my soul with their work or made me laugh my pants off.It took me over 2 years to fill this circle up to 500 inspirators, but today... I finally added my last person. :)I will seek more of these in the future, don't worry, and this means I will have to share multiple circles from now on, but for now...these are the 500 most inspirational people on Google Plus for me.A great big Thank You to everybody in this circle for enriching my Google Plus experience and inspire and motivate me in becoming a better photographer.artist. #circleshare   #circlesharing   #circles  2014-01-09 22:05:0550031930

Ryan Lynham11,576Still having trouble finding G+ to be an active photography community? This is a list of the major players in my photography circles. Add this puppy and I think you'll solve your problem. In fact you might be overwhelmed and wish you had only added a few from it, which is another good idea, depending on your sitch, and what not.The standard circle share spiel: If you want to be in this circle and you aren't, then start sharing good photography and participating. Interaction on my posts / posts of people I follow helps, too. Easy peasy. Please don't ask me to add you. Thanks!Cc-ing +Darren LoPrinzi, who was looking for some good folks to follow. : )2012-07-30 18:23:5920234010

Thomas Hawk2,461,0112,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev)This is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the first circle and includes photographers with the last name's A-Ev (although +Marc Evans you are in tomorrow's circle).  A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably 2012-06-04 16:53:26500226139424

Peter From35,122The Black & White Circle –– Revised Version #CircleSharingForThePeopleBW2 It's time to reshare my validated and revised Black & White Circle (BWC) with 465 excellent photographers that produce great monochrome images. You don't want to miss that one. I am proud to promote these great people and I am sure they will bring lots and lots of great black & white images to your feeds. If YOU want to hop on the B&W train, do the following:1. Help spread the word and reshare this circle post. Why? If you think you should be promoted, you should be willing to do the same for your fellow photographers. Simple as that.2. Ask for inclusion in the comments. I will check every feed.3. Make sure that you share your own original B&W photography in your feed. If there are too many reshares of other peoples' work, irrelevant YouTube clips, animated GIFS, blog post teasers etc., I might not add you to the circle. The BWC is a validated quality circle that should bring people great monochrome imagery to their feeds. If you only shoot in color or don't have an B&W album, don't ask for inclusion.NOTE! If you see that I have plussed your comment, then you know that I have added you to the next revision of the BWC. I didn't PLUS your comment? Make sure that you have reshared this announcement post and let me know that you did so.This announcement post is hash-tagged with #CircleSharingForThePeopleBW2 so that you may mute the reshares this post will generate. That way you will avoid seeing multiple copies of this post in your feed and your adrenaline level will stay normal. I will add a new hash-tag for every announcement and circle post in the future. That way you won't miss out on any of the action but still can mute all the duplicate reshares. Here is an excellent add-on that will help you to mute the reshares: http://code.google.com/p/nonplus/Cheers!2012-05-14 08:51:42465909793

Especially +Candace Regan whose my better half who makes me look good :-) She wasn't feeling well yesterday, she's been putting in 20 hr days lately working on our projects to help others for free, so I thought I'd surprise her today with a few new followers, she loves to engage with people. Just like others in this group of people who are waiting to follow you, they love to engage with people, while others are hoping for the opportunity to inspire you with their posts. For me, that's what it's all about, helping one another find the right people to connect to.The greatest thing about Google is you can add and delete as many circles as you want. So put this circle to the test, check out the Stream for a week, keep those who you like and return the rest to the grid. You can always add them again later on when the time is right for you. I guarantee you, you'll find more than one :-)That's why I included +J.J. Bentley circle of 190 "Rising G+ Superstars" Their amazing photographers with less than 10,000 followers, that are rising to the top because of the extraordinary work they do :-) Please add & share this circle ~ to share these extraordinary people,If you would like to be added, please leave a comment. #BeHappy #Friends #Share #circleshare #circlecount #publiccircle #sharedcircle If you have a favorite photo/artwork/story that we should consider for our book & show that were producing this fall, so that we can continue to help people for free, then post it on the public stream and include the #hashtag #Take2seconds and mention my name +Trever McGhee or +Candace Regan so that we can comment on it. If the photo/artwork/story follows the Google guidelines, it is family friendly and we have the artist's permission, we'll include it in the DVD portion that goes with the book. Everyone can take part in it, all you need is one plus which can be your own :-). As to whether or not your photo/artwork/story makes it into the book and/or the reality show will be determined by the largest number of pluses/shares.More details on the projects and how we'll raise 97 million will be released on Apr 22 :-)2012-04-12 15:11:29471841634

Steve Gill10,469UK PhotographersHere is my circle of interactive UK Photographers. There are some great names in here and they will fill your stream with interesting posts. Now, if you don't see your name here, or the name of someone who should be here, just add a note in the comments and I will add you before I share again. If you are a UK based photographer or aspiring photographer, please let me know. I only want to include people who actively share work on G+ so I regularly check each and every nomination to ensure that only interactive people who have shared work in the past couple of months are included. If you haven't posted anything for a while you might find your name dropped.2012-04-05 07:59:3831926510

Athena Carey41,477Athena's Long Exposure Inspiration CircleThere are different forms of LE represented here: black & white, color, seaside, landscape, architectural, night skies, with filters and without. In addition these photographers range from absolute LE masters to those who are just beginning, but still creating beautiful images. The common denominator for everyone in this circle is that they do some type of Long Exposure photography (although not necessarily as their primary genre) and that LE work of theirs is lovely to me.I would like to express to everyone in this circle my sincere thanks for sharing your beautiful work, for inspiring me, for your friendship, camaraderie and in some cases for the support and mentorship. I appreciate you all. <3If you know of other inspirational LE photographers here on G+ that I have not yet found, please do recommend them in the comments. :)UPDATE: Please also add the following inspirational LE photographers. +Lori Hibbett +Frank van Es +Ed King +Kim Stevens +Jens Ceder and +Stef Sorrell #SelflessSunday2012-01-22 14:40:27105631458

Once when it got to 500 and then again when it got to 1,000. Today my circle hit 1,500 so I'm sharing them again.I have to break them up into 500 person circles because this is the limit on Google+. Also Google limits the number of people you can add to circles per day so I'm going to publish my kick ass photographers circle over 3 days. Today I'm publishing A-G. Tomorrow I'll publish G-O. Friday I'll publish P-Z. By last name.In addition to the kick ass photographers in these circles I've also added three other accounts. Our new photography hangout show which will be on live tonight at 8PM PST +Photo Talk Plus as well as our show's sponsors +Drobo and +SmugMug as a way of saying thanks to them.A few notes about these circles. not to be long-winded, but…Every time I've shared my circles I've gotten haters from it. People who are upset that they are not in them. I absolutely detest that. It makes me not even want to share them because of that. These circles are not meant to be the definitive list of what photographers you should be following on Google+. These circles are simply who I have chosen to follow for photography on Google+ for my own personal consumption. I want to share them because I think YOU may also benefit from having these rich, talented, kick ass photographers in your streams. This is the circle that I browse every single day looking for great stuff to +1 and comment on Google+ and as such it reflects my own personal biases. For example. I hate looking at watermarks. This is a personal preference thing. If you use them, more power to you. It's absolutely your right. But as a consumer of photography I find them ugly and distracting and so I tend not to follow people who use them. This is not a big deal. This is not a personal attack against you if you watermark. This isn't even a universal rule of mine. I do have a few friends who use them that I still follow. But by and large, what you get with my circles is a watermark/signature free circle. I also prefer people who are active on Google+ both in terms of posting and in terms of contributing to the community. If the last photo you posted was in November, I probably won't have you in this list.If you were in my photographers circle before but removed, it could be for a lot of these sorts of reasons. Watermarks/sigs, not posting enough, posting too much non photography stuff that I'm not interested in, or all kinds of other things. Who knows. But it's most definitely not personal. (Unless I'm blocking you and then maybe it is personal). Also if you are not in these circles it may simply be because we don't know each other yet. In time perhaps we will become great friends (hopefully). Or you may not be in these circles just 2012-01-18 23:20:26500193111261

IR Conversion Test Shot

A test shot from my newly converted D40x using a piece cut from a Hoya R72 to replace the hot mirror. My sincere thanks to +Julian Provis for his expertise in doing the conversion.
Basically replacing the hot mirror means I can now use the camera as a dedicated IR body and have no need to attached a Infra Red filter in front on the lens meaning easier composition and shutter speeds that enable handheld shots (although I will no doubt be adding the Lee Big Stopper to creat some LE work in the future).
The first version has been channel swapped, whilst the other is a B&W to show the difference in what can achieved.
ISO100, F8, 1/200th sec - handheld.

Exmoor National Park, Somerset.
#MinimalMonday

Bossington beach is composed of a steeply shelving shingle bar that has extended across Porlock Bay.

This is one from the archives -  I have previously uploaded a slightly different composition in B&W but I like the colours in this and the more minimal feel without any headland. Slightly longer exposure in this one at 181 seconds to bleach out the sky.

Thanks to everyone who has added me to their circles recently and has taken the time to +1 or leave a comment on one of my posts.

Sorry I haven't been around recently, I had a bit of time yesterday to catch up with some of my circles recent stuff - been really busy just doing normal family stuff since my wife started her new job, also trying to catch up on some maintenance stuff around the house.

Llansteffan Castle stands on a hill south of the village, overlooking the Tywi estuary. It was one of a chain of castles the Normans built to guard the river mouths in the early 12th century. But its history as a stronghold goes back much further, with the Norman castle taking advantage of the existing earthworks of an Iron Age hillfort. Like many other castles in the region its early history is marked by repeated attacks and capture by the Welsh. Late in the 12th century the castle came into the possession of William de Camville. The de Camvilles held Llansteffan until 1338, and during this time converted the castle into the stone fortress that remains today. They temporarily lost the castle to Welsh attacks in 1189, 1215 and 1257, but managed to regain the castle and repair and further develop the defences between each attack.
This shot shows the Inner Gate in the Upper Bailey and was at one stage in the castle’s history its main entrance, this three storied rectangular tower would have been connected to the curtain wall with a brief length of masonry topped by a wall-walk.

Bluebells
Kidnalls, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England.
B+W ND110 ISO100 f14 60secs - tripod.
Slight breeze, hence the 10stop trying to capture the movement of the leaves.

This one was taken 2 years ago, the bluebells are just appearing here in The Forest of Dean, hopefully be able to get some new shots soon.

Sorry I haven't been on much the last month or so. My wife has been poorly, now on the mend thankfully, and my creaking old PC has had a re-install after a few weeks of crashes - hopefully now sorted.
So I will try and catch up with everyones streams over the next week or two and hopefully get some images processed to share with you all.

A shot of me standing in a churn - which is a word used in the Forest meaning an underground void caused by the mining of the Iron Ore which would have filled the space left.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately, been busy with work in the run up to half-term which was mostly spent enjoying some quality time with the family.

Severn Bridge
Lee Big Stopper F14 @ 30 seconds.
Severn Bridge, Beachley, Mounmouthshire, Wales.

An outing from a couple of weeks ago with +Ben Locke to catch the setting sun on the Severn Bridge.

Info from Wikipedia
The Severn Bridge (Welsh: Pont Hafren) is a suspension bridge spanning the River Severn between South Gloucestershire, just north of Bristol, England, and Monmouthshire in South Wales, via Beachley, a peninsula between the River Severn and River Wye estuary. It is the original Severn road crossing between England and Wales and took five years to construct at a cost of £8 million. It replaced the Aust ferry.
The bridge was opened on 8 September 1966, by Queen Elizabeth II. The bridge was granted Grade I listed status on 26 November 1999.

Taken a couple of weeks ago on the River Severn with fellow photographer +Ben Locke at one my favourite local locations. It's only 15 minutes away by car and due to the high tidal range (at 14.5 mts/48 feet it has the second highest range in the world) you never get the same experiance twice!

It has been snowing here in The Forest of Dean this afternoon, quite a light but consistent amount and enough for it to stick. Hopefully we should get more overnight meaning that tomorrow may bring some photo oppurtunities as well as some fun for the children, who are excited about buidling snowmen etc.
This one is from a couple of years ago and was taken not far from where I live.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone!

Sorry I haven't been around much lately - I have been getting a website up and running. Normal service will be resumed shortly!

For anyone interested....www.jamesclegg.co.uk
Hosted by Zenfolio, they are one of only a few such sites that give the option of an integrated shopping basket for here in the UK. I know quite alot of the US based photographers use SmugMug, but they do not have the same selling options for over here.
Anyway I am basically using their free 14 day trial to see what I can do with the site.
Any feedback greatly appreciated!

Burnham Lighthouse
Lee Big Stopper & 0.6 Hard Grad F8 @ 80 seconds.
Burnham-On-Sea, Somerset, England.

Taken in appalling conditions at the weekend on a trip with fellow photographer +Ben Locke. It was very windy, hence low angle to shot (I am sure the tripod would have blown over had it been any higher), with severe gusts and sporadic drizzle. I think our outings may involve some sort of atmospheric change that renders all weather forecasts of bright sunny spells & nice sunsets as completely wrong! Be warned if you plan to meet us at the next outing :-)

Info from Wikipedia
The low wooden pile lighthouse or "Lighthouse on legs" was built in 1832 by Joseph Nelson, to complement the nearby High Lighthouse completed 2 years earlier. It is a total of 36 feet (11 m) high, with the light being at 23 feet (7.0 m) above the sand. It stands on nine... more »

The lights on the High Lighthouse were deactivated in 1993 so the decision was taken to re-instate the lights on this smaller lighthouse to aid navigation on the constantly shifting sands of the Bristol Channel.___

If you are relatively new to G+ then check this out - it includes some awesome photographers.
Thanks must go to +Thomas Hawk for compiling.

1,500!

Over the last three days I've posted three circles of 500 each of all of the photographers that I'm currently following on Google+. For the most part these are active, engaged photographes on Google+ and represent some of the people that you may want to get to know if you want to participate more in the Photo Community that has emerged on Google+.

The Google+ Photography Community is the most active, engaged, positive group of photographers I've ever seen anywhere on the web. I'm constantly blown away and humbled by the quality of the work that people post there day in and day out. More than just the work, the photographers that I've met on there, that I've hung out with on there, that I've hung out in real life with on there (HIRL), are such amazing people that I've been so fortunate to have gotten to know.

Alot of people ask me how they might get more involved with Google+. I'd say that you can start with checking out these folks and I think you'll find most of them are pretty easy to get along with and interact with. You can check out these circles here:

1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (A-G, Part 1 of 3) http://goo.gl/WGdFw

1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (G-O, Part 2 of 3) http://goo.gl/1yiS6

1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (P-Z, Part 3 of 3) http://goo.gl/6nLZE

Thanks to each and every photographer that I've gotten to know at Google+!___If you are relatively new to G+ then check this out - it includes some awesome photographers.

Little Dennis Blockhouse
Pendennis Point, Falmouth, Cornwall, England.
#SunsetSaturday

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend, hopefully going on a shoot to Somerset later today with +Julian Provis & +Ben Locke , the weather doesn't look to good at the moment, hopefully it may clear up.

This was shot about 20 minutes before sunrise, taken from Pendennis Point looking over towards St Anthony Head lighthouse, as a fishing boat passes Black Rock heading out into the bay.

Info from English Heritage
Little Dennis Blockhouse was built in 1544-46 as part of Henry VIII's chain of coastal defences to defend against possible French or Spanish invasion. It is located on the rocks just south-east of Pendennis castle. Sources disagree to whether it was dismantled in 1564 or whether it had developed by 1800 into a small fort with perimeter walls,... more »

Sources disagree to whether it was dismantled in 1564 or whether it had developed by 1800 into a small fort with perimeter walls, guardhouse and magazine. Either way it was always used as sub-defence of Pendennis Castle.
Little Dennis Blockhouse has a semicircular plan and is built of stone rubble with granite quoins. It features a curved gun rampart, and guns were possibly mounted there until the Napoleonic wars. The main gun port with flanking openings faced across the estuary and another gun-port faced out to sea.

Natural History Museum, Kensington, London.

Of all the Museum's galleries, the Minerals gallery most faithfully retains Alfred Waterhouse's original architectural vision. The original oak cabinets dating back to 1881 allow an uninterrupted view of the finely decorated square columns along the length of the gallery, and provide an airy display area to explore the mineral specimens.

Feeling Old
Lee 0.9 Proglass ND, 0.6 Hard Grad & Sigma CPL - F22 @ 8 seconds.
River Severn, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England.
#SunsetSaturday

Feeling Old? Well not as old as this ammonite, which could be anything between 65-240 million years old.
Ammonites are perhaps the most widely known fossil, possessing the typical ribbed spiral-form shell. They became extinct along with the dinosaurs. The name 'ammonite' (usually lower-case) originates from the Greek Ram-horned god called Ammon. Ammonites belong to a group of predators known as cephalopods, which includes their living relatives the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus.
Taken last night on a fairly cold, but, rewarding trip to the River Severn a few miles from where I live - one of my favourite local spots for sunsets.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Cefn Coed
Nr Crynant, South Wales.
#TuesDecay

Located near the village of Crynant in the Dulais Valley five miles north of Neath, Cefn Coed Colliery was once the deepest anthracite coal mine in the world - the best coal came from the deepest seam called Big Vein, broken into at a depth of 750 yards.
At such depths and with frequent mining accidents due to methane gas and roof falls, it was one of the most dangerous coalmines in Wales, gaining the nickname ‘The Slaughterhouse’.
The site is now run as a museum and is well worth a look if you are ever in the area.
