Lotus Carroll1,778,004This is the Event for our April Self Portrait Challenge: "Wet." Maybe riding some ocean waves or drowning in a lake? The possibilities are endless! Lotus Carroll1,778,004This is the Event for our February Self Portrait Challenge: *Love Is...* There is always quite a divide in feelings about Valentines Day out there, and about Love in general, and we figured that we'd let you guys battle out your feelings about that here on the "Self Portrait Stage" for this Challenge. Is Love Cruel? Is Love Kind? Is it something else? What is love? Let's see how you can conceptualize this with your self portraits! Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait with a "Love Is..." theme. Your photo must have been captured during this month. Alan Shapiro3,627,184I'm continually flabbergasted (I love saying flabbergasted. Say it with me. Flabbergasted. Now say it ten times while pretending you just got your tongue pierced. Cool.) at the sheer number of certain products available for photographers. Choosing a camera bags has got to be one of the more time consuming and frustrating experiences. And a bag is one of the products that is really important right? We're carrying expensive gear around and want to protect it. But then it has to be comfortable. And easy to use. After spending far too much time searching online and walking the aisles of B&H, Adorama. PhotoPlus Expo most recently in search of the perfect camera bag, I decided to ask a friend, +Peter Waisnor from +Tenba to spend a half hour with me to talk about choosing a bag and what to look for in a bag (while promising me to stay as neutral as possible despite making *the best bags in the world.*) Join us tonight from 8:30pm - 9:00pm EST (5:30pm - 6:00pm PST) for our Hangout On Air (which will be recorded so if you can't make it, no worries. You can watch it online later)Picking a camera bag...what to look for and how to decide what's right for you2013-10-28 01:30:0080

My Winnie "the one-eyed Wonderdog" had many supportive friends over the years on G+. It is with very deep regret that I share she passed away last Tuesday after a long fight to regain strength after wood fell on her spine at a neighborhood house last November. She had been healing and getting stronger, but had many ups and downs. Now she is happily in Heaven with my Dad, her original hero and adoptive rescuer. I imagine her running pain-free and with full strength in her back and limbs and leaping and jumping as she so often did, full smile beaming across her face.

Thank you again to friends who have shared my love for her over the years she was Velcro to my side, 24/7. I created an album of images I hope gives proper tribute to my best friend, gentle soul and loving spirit, my dear sweet Winnie. XOXO

Here we go again...
Just letting friends know I will be "off the grid" for awhile. After having to exit an unfortunate and unstable temporary housing situation, I've had no luck finding anything and waitlists everywhere.

I'm headed to the forest for awhile. We have a run-down tiny hunting camp there and I'll pitch a tent for secondary daytime relief from mosquitos, black flies and ticks. There is no water, refrigeration, wifi or phone, so I'll be hiking out to main road daily where mobile reception is scant to send family check-ins. There is a generator I can run from time to time to recharge gadgets - my life work, of course

I'm actually looking forward to time away from toxic environments and the people that make them so. I'm bringing my guitar and lots of books, working on biz plans, relocation options, how to relocate and I am on the... more »

Yesterday was my dad's birthday. Although he passed away four years ago this October, he remains the most important man in my life. I think about him every day - when I'm making a decision, when I daydream about happier times, when I see or experience something at camp and there is that split second of excitement to share it with him followed by the sinking wave of pause when I remember he is no longer here.

This summer I have lived in his favorite place - his beloved hunting camp along the lovely, winding and peaceful Haymeadow creek in Hiawatha National Forest. I talk to him. I wear his cross. I see flowers and think of them as gifts from Dad because he never missed a birthday or Valentine's Day as an opportunity to send Mom and his girls flowers.

Today I'll bring him a bouquet of wildflowers, listen to some Johnny Cash and hone my aim on the shooting range in his honor.

I miss him.

Winnie was my link to Dad. Dad adopted/rescued her from the shelter and was his constant companion and loved camp as much as he did. She was by his side faithfully, even through his passing. I think Winnie adopted /rescued me when Dad couldn't. When I returned home, she was velcro to my side. Winnie didn't care about titles and financial value - only love, play and routine - all important to keep my head up and motivation high. Dad always encouraged us to work hard and persevere and in some ways, I think he underscored that message for me through Winnie.

Winnie died in April. I had nursed her through 24/7 care because the diagnosis was vague yet very hopeful for recovery. The physical pain of loss is a writhing, guttural ache no medicine can ease. And losing her was like losing Dad all over again. My only solace was that Dad and Winnie were reunited. I buried Winnie here at camp to be near Dad and because she shared Dad's love for this beautiful spot.

There is a hole and emptiness that is bottomless when one loses a parent. I do not miss Dad any less today. I miss him more because my own life is incredibly challenging, a grasping for survival and he is no longer here with the emotional safety net I created in my mind as a child that parents have a shield of impermeable strength to forever save and protect: "Dad [Mom] has your back, so don't be fearful... go for it."

I'm afraid now. I'm anxious. I have trust issues and fear loss. I lost many family and friends unexpectedly in a short period of time and I feel numb. I've realized grounding is loose and anyone - anyone - can slip at any time.

I slipped hard financially after graduation while searching for high tech work in a static hiring market. I was living in San Francisco - the city with the highest cost of living in the nation, but where my Silicon Valley mentors and network was prestigious and influential. But not even glitzy connections could create jobs in a plummeting economy where layoffs were rampant and hires unheard of. Dad was an accountant and financial advisor. But even he did not fathom how hard the economic drought would hit me and pull me into the vortex underworld that is the trifecta of doom: being unemployed, broke and struggling for food and shelter. He witnessed the constant challenges and understood my depletion of confidence: prior to the recession, I always landed any job for which I interviewed. Those were different times, but I'm certain he felt, as did I, that it was a temporary situation. I'd rebound and be financially stable and well off. He and Mom were encouraging and had nothing but faith in me. So I focused hard, working 12-14 hours a day to land work - any work. My blinders kept me focused, and isolated and exhausted. But it would not be this way forever. And it wasn't. My world stopped one October day: Dad was gone. In our minds, we believe our parents will be here forever, but forever has a time stamp too.

My biggest hurt is not having the money to get home before Dad died. I thought my darkest days were when I had to borrow for rent and gas while interviewing as a final candidate 5, 6, 7 times for the same companies in hopes of landing a lucrative position. But then Dad called and shared his cancer diagnosis and that it was terminal and he had weeks to a couple months left to live. Being with Dad in his final weeks or months was far more important than being tech industry's interview toy. Desperate with days passing by too quickly, friends loaned me airfare to book my flight home. Dad was so excited and told everyone around town that I was coming home; it had been five years since I'd seen him due to scraping by on pennies through grad school; I was incredibly homesick. Being with Dad and helping Mom care for him was clearly a no-brainer decision for me. But he died two days before I walked through the doors of that childhood refuge on Minneapolis avenue that we will always call home.

Some say they are glad I didn't see him ill. But we are so much more than the physical body housing our spirit. I would have been content even sitting near him. I believe we can feel the presence of others in various states of unconsciousness. I had felt others near me when unconscious with a brain injury, so I believe the dying know when loved ones are present. Dad was fortunate to have had Mom, Steve, Sarah and Winnie by his side in the comfort of his own home when he passed. He was surrounded by love, for which I am thankful. But I'll forever be sad I could not hug him and tell him in person how much I loved him. I know he knew (and knows) how much I care for him, but I am very tactile and being there to hold his hand would have brought more closure. But we are in God's hands, so I must let go of perfect goodbyes and refocus on how I can keep his memory alive within me.

We can never cash in vouchers for lost time. But this summer, living in Dad's favorite getaway, I learned to understand him all the more.

I've found strength when I thought there was not a muscle left that could lift another shovel of dirt when I buried my car. And I've held it together when bureaucracy's red tape cut my insurance, food and housing opportunities within the same week due to bureaucratic errors.

I've found appreciation in the forest, the plants, the wildlife, the creek and witnessing newborns and loss of life as prey so another species could feed its young.

I understand how a "bath" in the cold creek is the most refreshing bath ever.

Dirt doesn't bother me.

Critters have their place in the forest and even in the walls and interior of camp and, strangely, I can live with that... with a few slithering exceptions.

I find joy in watching Savannah smiling and exploring every inch of space and recall Dad's love of dogs, especially Sheba and Winnie and his many stories of them at camp he couldn't get through without laughing.

I love the sound of the creek, the wildlife, the rain, the wind, crickets in the heat of the sun's rays. The howling of coyotes and wolves is a reminder that we are small on this planet and we are all prey as well as predators.

I've learned to appreciate Dad's introversion and find I am more similar to him than I ever thought.

I'll be forever grateful that Dad taught me to love the forest, to appreciate time "off the grid" and to slow down and take in and listen more than speak.

He also passed on his love of fishing and respect for firearms and hunting. He taught me archery, but I wish I had learned more about marksmanship from him. It's a respected and skilled necessity in this part of the country and my skills are sorely lacking.

Most of all, Dad taught me that working hard is admirable. He was proud of my achievements, but more so, that I had set high goals and worked hard to attain them.

I know he never would have predicted I'd be homeless and living alongside his beloved Haymeadow. But in so many ways, misfortune has been a gift. Separation from the clutter and noise of living in cities or towns or online has been an awakening - a chance to recalibrate and reboot. I'm resting, thinking and daydreaming more and taking time to watch clouds go by. I see stars at night and the twinkles in my pets' eyes when I spend quality, uninterrupted time with them.

It hasn't been easy, but my time at the "Haymeadow Hilton resort," as he called our run-down hunting camp, has brought me closer to Dad and in understanding myself and how I keep surviving blows that would paralyze others.

Perseverance, hard work and stubborn positive determination are pivotal survival skills within me. But time alone in Dad's favorite environment has forced me to slow down and think more about what I want and what I love, rather than merely pursuing what I'm skilled in accomplishing. Of course, like father, like daughter, financial stability is key, but so is spirituality in the peaceable kingdom, to appreciate the overlooked as well as the obvious and most importantly, recognizing that to love and be loved in return - by any being - is the greatest gift of all.

I love my Dad. And I know that he loves and watches over me. He still has my back; he never let go.

Thank you, Dad. Happy Birthday... Xoxoxoxo___

I'm actually looking forward to time away from toxic environments and the people that make them so. I'm bringing my guitar and lots of books, working on biz plans, relocation options, how to relocate and I am on the cusp of launching my blog which will include excerpts from a book I'm writing called Portrait of a PhD: The poor hungry debtor as well as my photography site to sell my prints, probably via SmugMug unless others have better suggestions. I need wifi for this, though, so will be headed to town at least once a week to post, download, check messages, work online.

I'll be safe, although admittedly my area is overrun by coyotes and wolves (wolves ate my uncles three dogs two miles away from where I'll be). There also are cougar, black bear, porcupine, skunk, and the usual beasties. I have no gun or permit or conceal/carry, which sucks because even if I can get some pepper spray, I'm toast if surrounded. But my worst nightmare? Spiders and ticks. It's a paralyzing fear w/ spiders I'll have to get over quickly. Well, spiders and outhouse... might concoct a different solution to that. Lilycat and Hopper the frog will remain indoors and Savannah I'll watch at all times. She loves the creek, getting muddy snd shaking all over me. But I don't care; it will be good to see her happy.

So don't think I've abandoned all of you - I'll be checking in occasionally. Just wanted to let you know where I'm headed and why I won't be around much for the summer.

Keep me in your thoughts, but know I'm experienced in the backcountry and really need the headspace to calm nerves and think strategically about what's next and how to implement it.

Ciao for now!

Runs of "bad luck" have nothing at all to do with "luck"

People always wonder why some people have "runs of bad luck." I'll tell you. It's not that they keep having bad luck, it's that if the first blow hits them hard enough, financially, emotionally, physically, psychologically, there isn't reserve strength to catch yourself if someone or some circumstance trips you again.

I lost everything. Everything but me and my pets in 2012 (earlier, really). Someone let's you stay with them, you get food stamps, but have no cash. You cannot work due to recovery from said physical blow number 1, but you try. But welcomes eventually wear thin, people move, you have to find housing again. You must provide for your pets. Still can't work, but you somehow get vet bills and treatments paid for.

But you don't exactly get choice of top housing hosts because you have no money. So you constantly are moving, packing, unpacking, trying to move forward, helping out loonies in hopes of a return on investment, but you can't catch a break. Because you need more than a roof and a tube of toothpaste to crawl out of a hole you were buried in.

So to outsiders, this looks like "bad luck." Luck has nothing to do with it. It's about someone giving you a break - a real break, a chance.

Tonight i've been given notice at 7:30 pm that I am thrown out on my behind tomorrow because of using the phrase "pissed off" (to describe loud school bells ringing in AM during summer vacation), which is apparently "foul language and swearing" and this started a lovely argument that escalated. (And my friends here know that I don't back down when I've been wrongly insulted, so I own my share of words that followed).

But I have self-respect.

And I will never be called retarded or wrong for explaining it wasn't me that flicked a dog cord in a walkway or that i cover my meals in the microwave or I DID carry my dog through the house wrapped in two towels so as not to get mud anywhere. I will not answer to insanity. Once you start letting crazy people think they have power over you because you have no money and have a response to a wrongful insinuation of wrongdoing, then you are, in fact nothing - no better than them.

I like when people are honest and upfront. Those people are very few and difficult to find. They'd rather whisper, make up stories, add fiction to dark fantasy to make an innocent an evil. To them it's far more fun.

So for the fourth time this year, I'm looking for local friends and acquaintances for places to stay WITH MY DOG AND CAT AND FROG (10 gallon tank). I think I have a place tomorrow night. Just trying not to traumatize the pets too much with moving every night. My pets have been traumatized by instability and losing Winnie, our other dog, a month ago. This house and couch hopping will be hell for them. I'm used to life being hell; I try to protect my furbabies and amphibian.

And once again I live out of boxes and look for places to store belongings. In a week or so, I'll need more semi-permanent housing. I've been unable to work and won't be able to get a job for about 8 weeks. (Not that I want to live in Upper Peninsula's Delta County). And so here I go again. I'll be packing, marking and taping tomorrow. Not talking details, and won't talk details, just need to close another sh*t chapter and move on.

Permanent housing talks will be down the line. First I need to discern between the good witches and the bad witches. There's no place like home - if you have one!

Oh - the fun part of my local FB posting is that I don't do drugs or smoke. I don't mind if you have a drink or two or me either (though 1/2 drink does me in), but alcoholics and I don't mix. I don't smoke - cat is asthmatic - but these things always narrow the options.

As I say, these are times when you tell the difference between the church goers and talkers and the quiet doers.

Wish me luck my friends. The road gets longer every time and I grow more weary. Tis not meant to be my time on earth, but I'll see the Bitch through, then stick it to her good the next time.___

Why when silence of night falls
Do poundings of life's reverb
Echo in violent dissonance?

^^^ my poetic words from lack of sleep

My new insomniac anthem...
A la the marvelously talented and quirky Björk:

P.S. Thanks ahead of time, but no sleep remedies work.

Gossiping Geese and Knobby-Knee cranes were my surprise captures night before last on my evening walk. I actually fell into a marshy area (at about 40 degrees outside) to get the geese photo. I know they are mocking me and laughing in the photo taken as I fell. Then, I had to walk the beach to avoid more water pitfalls. What a beautiful surprise to come by Sandhill Cranes (not common nor rare here). I was mesmerized by their elegant movements. They initially chastised me across the beach, but after realizing Savannah and I were merely two morons, wet and sitting in the cold, merely watching them from afar, they chillaxed a bit and wandered comfortable doing their thing.

Photos are grainy because of the camera I had on me and use of digital vs optical zoom. Still, I felt the photos worthy of sharing because they make me smile. Enjoy!

HOW TO GUILT A HOOMAN by +Savannah Rose Tackman

First, wait until hooman is making an important call, then, open eyes wide and very sweetly do the following:

"Excuse me?"

(Do "the Lip curl" and gently do the "place paw on hooman knee" move for added theatrics).

"I know we had a lovely W-A-L-K already twice today, and I understand if it must be work before wiff dems, but... if it wouldn't be a bother, could we... may we please, perhaps, go on another "journey" while the suns rays shine so beautifully upon the outdoor glory that is nature?"

Tilt head questioningly and with guilt-provoking puppy dog eyes. Repeat until you're outside.

HOOMAN will cave. Every. Single. Time.

My childhood friend and distant cousin, Rob Mata, takes you through some beautiful country in the 906 (Michigan's Upper Peninsula), specifically through Delta County and rafting down our Escanaba River that goes right by my hometown. And for an added bonus, the piece allows you to hear the unique "Yooper dialect" spoken by many lifelong locals. Take a peek and view some waterfalls, sections of rapids, wildlife (Eagles, black bear, deer, wolves, cougar and more). And don't forget to order yourself an authentic "Stormy Kromer" from the ad and 906 Outdoors. ;-)

XOXO

It really irks me when I get to the conclusion of the short essay I've written to accompany a link and then the whole dang thing goes, "Poof."
Not going to rewrite it or reshare it. Because...  It's 1:30 am, I've just moved, my back hurts, my knee is popping in and out of alignment and I'm still unpacking. I am allowed to be a grump, but only for... 20 min? Never go to bed grumpy. Why? Because it seemed like good filler words to add there.

Goodnight my lovelies!!
Have a hygienic evening! <------  random phrase to accompany photo that has absolutely nothing to do with this post. No photo = boring. ;-)

Video is low quality - just wanted to capture the evidence so I can have a little chat with her tomorrow about kitty nose strips or some remedy. Turn up the volume - it's quiet on video, but loud in reality - especially when she snuggles onto my chest with her head nestled in the nook between my neck and shoulder. Awwww... Sweet? Yes, and... now approaching hearing loss. :-D
