Urban Saga III – From Paris with Love
Another vertorama in my story, this time a 9-shot one. 9 may seem a lot but the amount of detail I captured blew me away. You can zoom in or print it at 600% and you can still see detail.  I took it handheld at 200 mm with my Canon 70-200 f/2.8. I would have set up the tripod normally to take this shot but sometimes I just feel like the tripod is getting in the way of emotion. So I decided to do it differently and use my elbows placed on a parapet and my body to stabilize the camera. And it worked! The moral: don’t use your tripod when you can use your elbows :) Keep the emotion flowing! See it bigger here http://www.juliaannagospodarou.com/Architecture/Architecture/
I wish everyone to spend this Christmas in a dreamy, joyful, magnificent, gorgeous, wonderful way. Love, J

Urban Saga II – Empire State of Light
Empire State Building, the symbol of NYC, the way I see it
“One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years.” -Tom Wolfe – Totally agree!
If you ask me what is my favorite city in the world I will always hesitate between Paris and NYC. I think a combination of both would fit my personality perfectly and would solve my dilemma. A combination of history and modernity, of softness and boldness, of thought and action. So, today it is NYC but my next photo will most probably be from Paris.
- 4 shots Vertorama, shot with Canon 5DMK3 and Canon 70-200mm f/2.8.
Vertorama is something I'm trying for the first time and I love the result. These days I'm again attracted to the vertical format which was one of my favorites before my “square period” and working with vertoramas givesme a whole n... more »

Urban Saga V – New York WTC 1 – Freedom Tower www.juliaannagospodarou.com
Working again with ultra-vertical formats, I love it more and more, and I have to say this is one of my favorite images. I love all my images but I feel more connected to some and this is one of them. When I look at it, it makes me feel the emotion I felt when I was shooting it and working on it. It’s not only an image, it is a part of myself and this for me is the meaning of art, to be able to put a part of yourself into what you create. I can see myself in this image, 100%.
This is one of the locations we will be shooting at the NYC workshop in May bit.ly/NewYork_2016 and if you haven’t been there I can tell you it’s amazing. You can feel so much inspiration and emotion when shooting this place, not only because of the history it holds within but also from an aesthetic point of view. This is how Ichose the l... more »

This is how I chose the locations for this workshop, to be places that are not only great objects to photograph but also that induce a strong emotion to those who photograph them and inspire them to create. I can’t wait to get there with my students and see what they will be inspired to create in these place. ___

NEW SERIES (en)Visionography Masters:1st Chapter George DeWolfe
Starting a new series on my blog where I aim to present some of the most remarkable names in the fine art photography of today. I will focus on artists who, besides their beautiful photographs, are developing an artistic philosophy and vision that sustains their work and they will share it with us through interviews and articles. I call these artists (en)Visionography Masters and I’m starting with George DeWolfe one of the first names that comes to mind when you think about great black and white printing. A great photographer and thinker, and a great person too. Here’s an interview and an article with George.

GRATEFUL
Sometimes I just stop on my way and think how fortunate I am to be doing what I am passionate for and be rewarded for it. When I started showing my photography publicly I had no idea if anyone would resonate with what I create. But people did and this is my best reward. The awards I have won are not so important in themselves, but they make me happy because they mean someone, somewhere was moved by my art. And this is why I do what I do. To communicate this emotion I feel when making photography so others can feel it too through my images.
Today I’m happy again to have won 1 GOLD & 2 BRONZE medals & 4 Honorable Mentions at PX3 2015 – Prix de la Photographie Paris, People Choice Awards. I want to thank all these people who chose me, whoever they are, now and at all the competitions I have participated in the past.  It is a true honor!http:... more »

Bill Brandt, Ralph Gibson & Robert Frank
Three new boards I've created on Pinterest with the work of some of the most inspiring photographers I know. You can follow me at https://www.pinterest.com/juanngospodarou/ to see even more collections in the future.
On a side note, Bill Brandt reads my mind when he says: “Photography is still a very new medium and everything must be tried and dared. Photography is not a sport. It has no rules. It’s the result that counts no matter how it’s achieved.”

A few thoughts and reflections about art, to start the new year in a more philosophical way, after the sparkling champagne and the fireworks of the New Year's party. I'm always reflective in times like this and one of my favorite occupations is meditating about art.
Hope you all are already having a great 2016. Wishing you much love and inspiration in the year to come!

Happy New Year!
2015 has been a great year and I’m grateful. I’ve met and worked with wonderful people: friends, students, collaborators. I was lucky to be able to express my creativity with no restrictions, and the response to my work was more than I had wished for. For that I thank you. Hopefully 2016 is going to be even better for everyone. Wishing you all Happy New Year and for all your dreams to come true. And don’t forget why we do photography as art: to express our true selves and to make the world a better place. Because beauty will always make the world a better place. Love, J

Let’s send a good thought also to those who are less fortunate than us and wish them a better tomorrow.

Just recently started using Pinterest and what I'm doing now is to build collections with the work of the masters of photography. I just love to look at their work and imagine the passion and dedication these artists put in their work. Here is a gallery about Dorothea Lange, one of the most passionate photographers I know, and I'm working on more. It is a work in progress so expect more in the future. If you want to keep track of them you can follow my board here https://www.pinterest.com/juanngospodarou/

Urban Saga III – Rooftop Story _ _ Chicago Skyline_
A new chapter in my story Urban Saga. An image I loved both shooting and processing – a 2-shot panorama taken with the 17mm T/S lens. As you know I love to shoot with the tilt-shift lens and I'm enjoying the 17mm more an more lately as it gives me a new perspective over the world and allows me to experiment with things I couldn't do with a regular lens. Many times what I like to do is the exact opposite of what is expected from this lens. In Fluid Time series I played with the tilt-shift blur instead if going for sharpness, now I'm playing with the quality of this lens to exaggerate convergence, instead of straightening verticals. As I said, I'm a rebel :)

Interview for +Paul Griffiths  "Live and Uncut" - Recording
Very honored to be on the same list with Michael Kenna, Irene Kung, David DuChemin, Alain Briot, Bruce Parcy and other exceptional photographers and artists interviewed by Paul Griffiths. It was a great experience. I hope you will enjoy it. The recording misses a few minutes in the beginning, but I can tell you Paul did a great presentation. Keep an eye on Paul's interviews. He has fantastic guests always.

A movie you should all watch. It won't teach you so much about photography (no PP tricks in there), but it will teach you about life. The great Saul Leiter. He is the one who understood it is not about happiness in life. It is about experience.

Vertorama is something I'm trying for the first time and I love the result. These days I'm again attracted to the vertical format which was one of my favorites before my “square period” and working with vertoramas gives me a whole new way of seeing the vertical format, not to mention the extra detail you get from vertoramas and panoramas. The format I chose for this image is not a very conventional one, because honestly, I don't care much about norms, but about what works best, and in this case the best for me was a 6:13 format. You won't find it in any book, but just like one of my favorite photographers, Arnold Newman, was doing, I'm subordination the image format to the aesthetic result and you will probably see more of these “original” formats in the future. It may give some more work to the ones who will print my work, but I'm sure they will be understanding :)

Urban Saga I – Deepest Secret - Chicago
“Here is the deepest secret nobody knows. Here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud...” - e. e. cummings
I finished this image a while ago but I'm only now presenting it publicly. In the meanwhile it has won a few important awards I'm proud of, like Gold medal and 2 Silver medals at PX3 2015 Paris and FAPA 2015 London, where it was category winner. Why I didn't show it so far? I'm talking about this on my website http://blog.juliaannagospodarou.com/living-your-photography/
I'll be back to Chicago mid October for a conference and a workshop. Details on that very soon.

Ansel Adams and Visualization versus Vision – Why Vision comes first
http://blog.juliaannagospodarou.com/visualization-versus-vision-why-vision-comes-first/ I'm sure most of you have heard about Ansel Adams' “visualization”. And I'm sure you've also heard about vision. Or you might ask yourselves what these two concepts really mean.  Here's a new article I just published where I talk extensively about  visualization versus vision, as 2 very important steps in creating fine art photography, and I give a few tips too. If you want to know why I consider that vision comes first, I invite you to read the article and let me know what you think.

The Guide to Vision - Replay
I've received many questions lately about vision, from my mentoring or workshop student and other fellow photographers. Here is an article that gives an answer to many of those questions and that can be useful if you're asking yourself about this topic: my Guide to Vision, meant for both beginner and advanced photographers, also included in the book From Basics to Fine Art, along with many other vision related topics that I'm writing about together with my co-author @jo Here's a link to the book bit.ly/basicstofineart If you have other questions, please send them to me and I will answer them in a Q&A article soon. Hope this guide will be helpful. Enjoy!
