I went to Whistler, Canada this week.  I drove up from Seattle and took some photos along the way.  I hope you enjoy them.  Most of these were taken from my car while my husband was driving so they aren't always exactly perfect, but still not a bad capture of the drive between Seattle and Whistler.

The Caged Bird

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

I'd sing it in the morning
I'd sing it in the evening
all over this land
I'd sing out danger
I'd sing out a warning
I'd sing out love between

This! Everything, I love about the internet summed up by David Bowie. This is the interview where he talks about how he went into music because it was subversive, but now the subversive artistic medium is the internet. ""It carries the flag of being subversive and possibly rebellious and chaotic and nihilistic,"

Yes, absolutely, the internet is a tool, you can use it to sell things,  work, or look up information but it is also an artistic medium, one which the artist can engage with his audience in a new and amazing way. And as he says, the potential of the internet is unimaginable, we are just now, only on the very cusp of all the things that will come.

For me that is what is so exciting about the internet, not anything that has happened up till now, but the idea of all the amazing things that have yet to come.

Mirror

I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful ‚
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.

Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.

Bal Harbour is a village of 2,500 people just outside Miami. In 2010, budget crunches were affecting its police department badly. They had tried egregious misuse of civil forfeiture (for which they were ultimately investigated by the DoJ, leading to the chief's resignation in 2013) but it simply wasn't enough to do more than pay their salaries.

The result was a brilliant sting operation: knowing that the Miami-Dade area is a huge hub of international drug trafficking, they teamed up with the Glades County Sheriff's Department (that being a mostly rural county just across Lake Okeechobee from Bal Harbour), posed as money launderers, and started to make deals with cartels to clean their money. Three years later, they had processed (by the latest audits) over $83M and returned it to the cartels, and netted a profit of at least $2.4M, of which over $1M simply vanished into individual officers' pockets, never to be heard from again.

If you're wondering "wait, where's the 'sting' part?," then you're not alone: federal prosecutors are wondering the same thing. Because not only were there no arrests, there wasn't even evidence being collected. The Bal Harbour Police Department hadn't set up a "sting" so much as a "money laundering business."

The Miami Herald's exposé is a fascinating read.

It is Thanksgiving but it's also ‪#‎TBT‬ and I thought this song would be perfect. In a bunch of conversations I have had with my friends the past few weeks, it's come up that we are living during a rocky period in world history. The thing is, it always seems to be a rocky period, and still as a world we keep moving forward. I am grateful today that we have survived through so much and I look forward to humans working together to continue to progress. Happy Thanksgiving!
