Scott Jarvie399,804POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURESIt's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event.SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINKIt's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all.You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to.BENEFITWell it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most. I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks likeON AIRThis will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout.I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't.SPECIAL GUESTBecause I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things I will have my good friend and great photographer +Susan Marinello on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well.We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access.DIRECTIONS1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album3.  IMPORTANT If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video.4. Make sure the album is Public access5. Add +Scott Jarvie  +Susan Marinello to your circles6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites.IMPORTANTIt bears repeating:If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video.DShare your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00144
Kelli Seeger Kim1,301,740It's +Karen Hutton 's birthday!  (okay, well - technically, it's September 7.  But +Kerry Murphy and I couldn't wait any longer!)Anyone familiar with Karen will attest to the fact that she is all about peoples' passions.  What drives them.  What's in their hearts.  What better gift to give to her, than to share with her images that we feel represent our passion/soul/heart!.  Images that truly represent who we feel we are now - or the journey we are on (or traveled), in search of personal growth.  Maybe you have an image of yours that represents a style of photography that you feel a deep connection with. Maybe you have an image that marked a moment in your life that was particularly incredible for you - that touched you in a way that is significant.  We can have a lot of fun with this theme - the most important thing is that it comes from our heart.  :-)So feel free to upload images to this event, and tag them:   #SharingOurLightWithKarenHutton  Sharing Our Light With Karen Hutton (Happy Birthday, Karen!)2012-09-07 13:00:0058

Gailen Mapes69,130Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera D-F - 15 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to October 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting September 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-10-15 10:44:58125000

Gailen Mapes67,918Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera D-F - 15 of 31Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members. These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to September 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting August 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-09-15 10:04:58128918

Charles Lupica83,296═════════════════════════════════     Top Photographers you should follow                 An Art of Photography Circle  Photographers whose art we think will amaze you ═════════════════════════════════#ArtOfPhotographyCircle tag to allow people to easily mute this post. It's been a while since I shared a circle here on G+ so I thought I would team up with +Scott Thomas and +Brian Dukes to share with you the first new circle I've created in more than a year.  We think you'll find that the photographers in this circle are some of the very best that G+ has to offer.  Of course you're probably already following people like Jeff Sullivan , Lori Hibbett, Jay Patel and  Vivienne Gucwa but we think that all of the people in this circle will add high quality content to your stream.  All share their amazing work and many of them share tutorials and resources to help you perfect your art. When deciding who would be in this circle, we used these guidelines• Sharing mostly their own work• When sharing the work of others, the work is clearly identified• Little to no, promotional material. • Some people are included that share a lot about technique but may not share a lot of their photography.• If they have gifs in their stream, they're almost always educational. • The images shared by these people frequently fall into the category of, "I wish I'd taken it" • They post to G+ on a regular basis,  For some this may be a little as once a month.  For others, this may be one or more a day.  People who post less than once a month are not included.  We prefer to circle people that are active here on G+. No one has asked to be in this circle, however, we intend to share a version of this each month.  *If you know of a talented photographer you'd like us to add*, please leave a comment and share the circle.  Doing so will get us to look at their profile. However, there is no guarantee that we'll include them in a future circle.   We want to maintain the quality of this circle.  Therefore, we will only add photographers that we would want to see in our own personal stream. Many of the photographers in this circle are well known so we are particularly interested in hearing your choice of photographers with fewer than 15'000 followers.  We would like to give them the opportunity to gain more views for their work. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the quality of the work by the photographers in it.  ValidationThis circle was very heavily vetted.  We have looked at each photographer's stream and decide that we would like to include them in this circle. +Charles Lupica (me), +Scott Thomas and +2014-06-27 17:39:05116924955

And though she made me wait, she gave me plenty of incentives to stay patient.

I had mentioned to my good friend +Takahiro Yamamoto that of all the places I'd like to photograph in Japan, or at the very least see in person, was the Chureito Pagoda in Fujiyoshida. It's a landmark that has been photographed many times by many talented photographers, but I had recently become almost obsessed with the idea of seeing it for myself. So on a free day and a correct location to head to from our friend +Yuga Kurita we headed out to Fujiyoshida to see if the clouds would give us a clear view of Mount Fuji in the same frame as the pagoda. As you can see, we didn't get to see Fuji-san, at least not until after sunset. But the view was still as spectacular as I had seen in the photos from others. One thing that may seem crazy to Western eyes is seeing a family of 3 or more riding along on a motorbike or scooter. It’s actually quite common in Indonesia as well as most of South East Asia. Motorbikes are used for just about anything that us Westerners might consider using a truck or SUV for.

New love has a way of making me see things in a whole new light.

During my last stay in Japan it occurred to me that I would very much like to shoot the interior of the Tokyo International Forum again, this time with my +Sony  #A7R . Why? Simply because the last time I shot it properly was a couple of years ago with my D3S. Now that I had a 36MP sensor in my bag, I wanted to get a shot of all that detail that made up the interior of that great building. So when I met up with my fellow Sony shooter and photographer +Juha Kannisto, I told him that no matter where we went, I would like to shoot the interior of the Forum during sunset and the blue hour. If I was going to get this shot again, in my personal opinion these would be the best times to do it because of how the light would be when looking through the glass of the building. And luckily for me, Juha was kind enough to let me use his FE 16-35mm f/4 lens, which I must say, is properly sharp even in the corners. I loved it so much that I had a hard time giving it back. He he.

As some of you may know, and for those that don't, I've officially switched over to the Sony A7R system. I've received several questions about the camera here and there since I started using it, so I wrote a blog post about it to start the new year. If you'd like to read more about why I like it, why I switched, and would also like to see several resulting images during my time with the A7R, feel free to click through to this link: http://www.themarkeworld.com/japan-photos/seeing-things-whole-new-light/

If you have any further questions, feel free to leave a comment on my blog post.

Every once in a while I like to look back at photos that I’ve previously processed and published. I do this so that I can see how my style was back then and to see gauge how far I’ve come. Not just with technical skill, but also with my own personal style. While this one is somewhat similar to my original version (links all in the blog post), there are small things that I managed to do better.

I’ve said before that a great thing about living in Los Angeles is having access to some snowy mountains. Southern California is known for beaches and warm Spring weather all year round, but with just a short drive it’s easy to find a Winter Wonderland just like this area in the Angeles National Forest.

On the last night of 2014 I decided to hang with my pal on the hills around the Griffith Observatory. We hadn’t really planned on what to do or where to shoot, so we figured we’d head up, away from the holiday crowd and see what kind of view we might enjoy. It was cold. Quite possibly one of the coldest nights I’ve experienced in L.A. but it was well worth it to see such a comforting view of the city.

There’s not many places in the world where you can go from a warm, sunny beach to a winter wonderland in just an hour long drive. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the kind of place that California is.

Some of the most beautiful colors I was lucky enough to see was found in an average neighborhood in Saitama, Japan. I probably would have never seen this if not for my dear friend +Yumi Shoji! So I thought it would be fitting to get a photo of her hand reaching up to the beautiful red colors we found. ;-)

As some of you may know, a few weeks ago I decided to spend Christmas Eve up in the Angeles National Forest with my buddy +Scott Sugawara. The sunset was absolutely amazing, and so I decided to setup the Sony A7R for a time-lapse using the time-lapse app that I downloaded to the camera from the PlayMemories store.

So today's blog post not only includes a still image, but it includes the video result of that time-lapse. All 6 seconds of it! ;-)

My first blog post of the year is all about why I switched from Nikon to the Sony A7R. I've been using the A7R for just about a full year now and I can honestly say that I'm all in with this mirrorless system. To be clear, this isn't a review. There are plenty of great review out there already. But considering how many question I've been asked about it all of last year I figured I'd finally write about why I like it, why I switched, and why it won me over.

I've also included several photo examples of what I use it for, such as landscapes, HDR, super long exposures and late night shooting. Including results with different lenses whether they're native or third party with adapters. So if you're still on the fence about the Sony A7/A7R, stop by and check out my blog post.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Kamakura, Japan. I visit Japan often and aside from Tokyo and Saitama, I try not to visit the same spots on consecutive trips there. But with the end of the year here and my thoughts on where to travel to and what to photograph in 2015, I can’t help but think about the Kamakura Daibutsu at the Kotokuin Temple.

Last night I gave her my heart. And the very next day she's still all I can think about.

A few nights ago for Christmas Eve me and my pal +Scott Sugawara decided to head up to the Angeles National Forest to enjoy a snow capped sunset. The air was crisp. The weather was cold. But the view was very much worth freezing for. I decided to set up my camera to shoot a time-lapse and didn't bother to bring a backup body so as the colors were changing I ran around shooting the scene with my trusty iPhone. This image being one of the resulting images. I made minor color corrections with the Snapseed app and made some more adjustments using VSCOcam. Because I was out enjoying the mountains I wasn't able to meet Santa with milk and cookies. But knowing the view was like this, I'm sure he didn't mind one bit.

On another note, aside from living on my blog, I've also been spending a lot of my time on Instagram. That's been the case for at least the past few weeks and my time there has been steadily increasing all year ever since I started using a camera with a built in wifi feature. I've been enjoying browsing through a stream made up of strictly photos without any of the noise that comes with a typical social network site. And the engagement and community has been just as good as anywhere else. It reminds me of the simplicity of Twitter and the old days of G+. That being said, I've realized that a lot of the photos I post on the go have been Instagram exclusives since the app doesn't have an option to share to G+. So if you'd like to see more of my photos, whether they're old, behind the scenes or new shots like the one in this post, come check out my Instagram account (http://instagram.com/themarke/).

Hope to see you there. Or here. Or anywhere. There are just too many networks these days. He he.___

At this point it should come as no surprise that I enjoy the long and open roads in the United States. Freeways throughout the city or the lone interstate highways that cut across the country, I simply enjoy photographing them and driving on them. And if I can get a view of a decent section of freeway where each vehicle is choosing a way in which to go, I enjoy photographing that as well.

No matter how often I've been to Japan, I always find myself smiling whenever I see the Tokyo Tower. While it no longer stands as the tallest structure in the country, there's no denying how much charm and personality that the Tokyo Tower exhibits. It's a structure that has meant so many different things to so many different people since first opening it's doors to the public on December 23, 1958. Creativity. Ingenuity. Strength. Hope. To me it represents a love that will never fade. And a love that grows stronger with each passing year.

#HappyBirthdayTokyoTower !
お誕生日おめでとうございます東京タワー!

If there's one thing this Year in Photos video has helped me realize, it's that I've shot with nothing a mirrorless camera and smartphone all year long, and that I've hung out with +Takahiro Yamamoto a lot. He he. It was nice of +Scott Jarvie, +Brian Kemper and +NiNi Y to make an appearance as well.

And while the year isn't quite over yet, it's nice to be able to look back on these photographs and see how much fun I've had with traveling and friends.

Thanks to the +Google+ Photos Team for putting this together for me.

One day when I was driving back home from Las Vegas, Nevada I noticed this scene and immediately pulled over to the side of the road. I took this shot and just stood there to stretch my legs out for a bit and enjoy some of the view. It was at that moment that I had the thought, “There are definitely things more important than gambling”. ;-)

Junctions. Whenever I’m in Tokyo, Japan I really enjoy taking photographs of junctions. One might say it’s the influence of my good friend and amazing photographer +Takahiro Yamamoto but in all honesty just being able to see such intricate structures is enough to hook my interest.

"Seek not to follow in the footsteps of men of old; seek what they sought." -Matsuo Basho

When I was last in Tokyo, Japan I didn't have too much setup in terms of having to shoot specific areas. Of course there were things I did want to shoot, but for a majority of my visit, I just wanted to relax and hang with my friends and loved ones. That being said I took on the attitude of "going with the flow" for the first few nights in the city and met with whomever could get free at the last second. One night, his Majesty +Brian Kemper and the one and only +NiNi Y were able to spare a few hours and picked me up in Shinagawa. And being that we were all photographers, it was only natural to have our cameras with us. I've always said that and this night was no different as we walked along the same path that millions of people have walked along before, looking for anything that caught our interest. Not to mention that it's always fun getting to meet up with good friends that share the same love of photography.

These were all shot with the Sony A7R. I had a couple of lenses with me but I decided to shoot with just the FE 55mm f/1.8 prime lens. I may have more to add to this album later on, but for now here are some of the ones I enjoyed the most from that night.

If there was any doubt, which there isn't, as to why I love Mother Nature and landscape photography, it's moments like this that remind me of that fact.

Echo Mountain over in Altadena, CA is an interesting hike. It’s actually not too far up in distance at only around 2 miles I believe. But it’s non-stop switchbacks make it feel like a fella has been walking upwards forever. Or at least that’s how I feel whenever I hike up Echo Mountain.

It was already an honor to have my story selected as an #EditorsPick  a couple of weeks ago by the good folks at +Maptia. But to find out that it's also been selected to be featured on their homepage leaves me humbled and speechless.

It should come as no surprise by now that I love Japan, so the fact that this story about my trips there has been received so positively makes me quite happy. If you haven't checked it out yet, click on the thumbnail below. And while you're there I highly recommend going through the other stories they have on the site. They've been written and photographed by some of the most talented travelers that I've encountered on the internet.

Yes, even in one of the most technologically advanced cities in the world, traditional phone booths still exist. And apparently they're used for tagging, sticker placement, and as a subject for photographers to shoot.

I figure I'd get back into the habit of sharing my blog posts here. A post a new photo to my blog everyday but admittedly I've become quite lazy when it comes to social. So for anyone that was wondering, yes, I do still have a new photo to show each day. They just don't necessarily make it past my blog. ;-)

Whether it's a straight line or a curved path, as long as you follow the light you'll find what you're looking for.

On my first full day in Tokyo on a recent visit, I decided that I would stay on my feet all day and night to explore my home away from home. I started off my morning by meeting a fellow photographer that I've come to know here on G+, +Juha Kannisto. And after a morning and afternoon of shooting around, we met up with good friends and other fellow photographers +Jonathan Spence, +Hidetaka Onoyama and His Majesty, the King of Daiba +Brian Kemper in Ryōgoku in the Sumida Ward for some night shooting along the river and underneath some junctions. It was a fun day and night and hopefully we'll all get to hang again soon.

With some free time on my hands, I figured I'd browse through 500px again since it had been a while. While I was there, I thought I'd upload a new photo. I always forget how nice the photos look over on 500px. I should probably stay more consistent with it.

No matter how long I had to wait, she made sure I knew that it was more than worth it.

When I was in Japan recently, my good friend +Takahiro Yamamoto managed to get some free time so that we could take a road trip to Fujiyoshida in the Yamanashi Prefecture. It's an area that I had always wanted to visit so we headed there hoping to catch some great views of Mount Fuji. When we settled on our chosen location for sunset we found the clouds to be so thick that Mount Fuji was completely blocked from our view. As great as the sunset was, Fujisan was covered up the whole time. But we waited patiently and by the time our friend +Yuga Kurita had arrived for the blue hour, the clouds had cleared up enough for us to see Mount Fuji in all its glory. Normally I'd thank Mother Nature for the treat, but I get the feeling that Yuga's presence had something to do with it. He he. Blue hour, clouds,F... more »

The new layout of their site is pretty slick so jump on over and check it out. And also take some time to read through some of the other stories by other contributors. It might just inspire you to travel to some of the locations that are written about.

So with being a bit disconnected over the past several weeks, I thought I'd jump in here to share a BTS pic I took with my phone for #ThirstyThursdayPics . This was taken while my camera was in the middle of a long exposure of this little section of water in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. I'll have some photos to share eventually (if I ever shake enough of the laziness off and turn on my computer, that is). But for now this BTS will have to suffice.

If anyone other than my mother is interested in new photos from me, my blog is still going strong with a new photos each day. So feel free to stop by at themarkeworld.com.

For anyone wanting to participate in #ThirstyThursdayPics  get those posts up and don't forget to use the hashtag and to tag the good captain, +Giuseppe Basile!

One of the things I truly love about the Salton Sea is how still the water is. I can shoot with a relatively high shutter speed and still have water looking as smooth as glass. And this works out when it comes to shooting some neat reflections. Even if there is a bit of movement in the water.

As any Angelino would tell you, it seems to rarely rain here in the City of Angels. We get clouds, sure. But actual rain? Not very often. But while that doesn’t really help things considering that the state is in severe drought mode, it does work for us photographers. How? Well, I think with this you'll get some idea.

I’ve often said that the one advantage of having so many cars on the road in Los Angeles are the endless opportunities to shoot light trails. Of course, it’s this same amount of road activity that makes me not want to drive anywhere these days, but nevertheless when I’m in the mood to shoot light trails, I never have to struggle to get any.
