Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/2)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca  #sharedcircles #circles #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:30:374321234795

Markos Giannopoulos13,655Engagers VI: Christmas edition // It's a festive season so my monthly "round-up & thank you" circle is on the right mood!First some stats on people who engaged me (gathered via +Circloscope) and on my posts (tracked by +CircleCount):September: 620 plussers, 93 commentators and 86 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 745 +1s, 74 re-shares and 117 comments October: 395 plussers, 33 commentators and 39 sharers on 43 posts for a total of 1057 +1s, 80 re-shares and 165 comments November: 616 plussers, 114 commentators and 176 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 1109 +1s, 234 re-shares and 227 commentsA great month fuelled by two posts: 6+1 WordPress initial-setup plugins  (http://bit.ly/1bKXVgX 359 +1s, 59 comments, 183 re-shares) and Ode à Eiffel (http://bit.ly/1heptNZ 46 +1s, 4 comments, 5 re-shares). If I wanted to get "analytical" about it, it was two posts with some decent value (helpful list of plugins in one case on a every-day issue for a WordPress developer and an album of 18 original photos of night Paris on the other) :) So on to the circle: the formula for this month is - Plussers who are on over 3 engagers circles (so basically who have engaged with me in previous months as well this one)  - Sharers and commentators - A few kind highly-engaging people who have shared original circles including me. - People with over 300 in G+'s "relevance score" (as reported by +Circloscope), e.g. the people Google considers that I interact more and post similar content to mine (or of my interest)All in all, this came to a healthy group of 340 content creators and real engagers interested in technology and photography. Feel free to add them! As usual, stats and circle creation for this post were only made possible thanks to +CircleCount and +Circloscope. #engagers   #circleshare #circlesharing   #circleversary #milestone #googleplus #circleoftheday #circleplus #public #publiccircles 2013-12-16 17:49:57340441178

Raymond Duke2,369I only use one circle for people I add on G+. This is it. Unfortunately, due to G+'s shortcomings, only 500 people are allowed. Maybe one day they will open it up to more, like Twitter did recently with shared lists. Why do I use just one circle?Because I treat everyone the same. If you are on the internet, it doesn't matter what you do. We are all equal on the web. Our conversations and interactions will determine the context of our relationship, not how I categorize you. 2013-06-20 16:03:47500315

Markos Giannopoulos3,766197 interesting People // If you're into technology, the Web, photography and science, here's a circle to consider. Methodology: out of 3200 people that I follow, using +Circloscope I ordered them according to relevance score (calculated by Google depending on whose posts I engage the most) and filtered for a value over 30, then filtered for whether they are active (when was their last post) and finally filtered by whether they were in my "must read" circles. Voila! I hope you find it interesting :) #circleshare   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  #circlesharing  2013-05-26 09:51:2119713412

KICKING SUGAR

In late March I saw a report that claimed that adult Americans ate 22 teaspoons of added sugar every day--besides the natural sugars that exist in fruits and other foods.

I decided to try an experiment--to cut out all foods from my diet (as much as possible) that contained added sugar.

https://plus.google.com/117388252776312694644/posts/FBAHYip5Zus

9 weeks later I've lost 14 pounds.

I just did the math--if I have cut out 22 teaspoons of added sugar per day, with each teaspoon being 4.2 grams, that means I've cut out 92.4 grams of sugar per day, or 646.8 grams per week, for a total of 5821 grams. There are 28.35 grams per ounce, so I've cut out 205.33 ounces of added sugar. That's 12.8 pounds of added sugar that I haven't ingested in the past 2 months.

So...I cut out 12.8 pounds ofs... more »

Great Peter Drucker quote:

So...I cut out 12.8 pounds of sugar, have tried to walk 10,000 steps a day (using a fitbit) and lost 14 pounds.

My friend Marty Fahncke cut out added sugar and dropped 15 pounds in 3 weeks.

This woman cut out added sugar for 2 years and lost 132 pound: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705369565/Walking-away-from-sugar-leads-to-a-big-weight-loss.html?pg=all

I haven't seen it, but I understand a documentary narrated by Katie Couric just came out called FedUp--it's about added sugar in our diets.

The UN Food Chief now says obesity is a greater health threat than tobacco: http://www.latimes.com/science/la-sci-sn-united-nations-obesity-20140519-story.html

It would be cool to see #FedUp and other efforts spark a real consumer/citizen movement to kick added sugar from our diets--not necessarily by Bloomberg style fiat--and watch and measure the impact on obesity and overall health.___

Much Easier Than The Biggest Loser

This woman lost 132 pounds in 2 years by cutting out foods with added sugar and by walking more.

I started the same thing about a month ago, and am already 10 pounds lighter. It's simple. And family members are starting to join me too.

I'm offering to any of my adult kids that I will buy them a Fitbit if they promise to walk 10,000 steps a day and cut out all foods with added sugar for a month--just to see how easy and impactful this really is.

And Then

Last month, my wife's uncle died in a tragic accident in LA when the bicycle he was using to get lunch was hit by a truck. At the memorial service his daughter relayed a very touching story.

She said her dad (who was her best friend) called every day to talk. But instead of opening the call with the customary "How are you" or "What's going on", her dad always opened the conversation with "And then?" Her father viewed each conversation as a continuation of the last, and what pained her the most was that there were to be no more "and thens". I cried.

Since then I've thought a lot about how similar this is to our life's endeavors. We pour our heart and soul into our work and it becomes something we love and cherish. But even the challenges we work on today will one day become "and thens" as we move on to the next.

Today I'm announcing my departure from Google after almost 8 years.

I have been incredibly fortunate to work with the amazing people of Google. I don't believe there is a more talented and passionate collection of people anywhere else. And I'm overwhelmed when I think about the leadership of +Larry Page and what he empowered me to do while at Google. From starting Google I/O, to being responsible for all mobile applications, to creating Google+, none of this would have happened without Larry's encouragement and support.

I'm also forever in debt to the Google+ team. This is a group of people who built social at Google against the skepticism of so many. The growth of active users is staggering, and speaks to the work of this team. But it doesn't tell you what kind of people they are. They are invincible dreamers. I love them. And I will miss them dearly.

Finally, thank you to all those who I've met on Google+. The community here has been so supportive that I don't even know how to say thank you. You all make Google+. Without you, this social network wouldn't exist. Your support for Google+, and for me personally is something I will never forget.

But, now is the time for a new journey. A continuation. An "and then". I am excited about what's next. But this isn't the day to talk about that. This is a day to celebrate the past 8 years. To cry. And smile. And to look forward to the journey yet to come.

And then....

Helping Ex-Offenders Discover Their Strengths and Get a Second Chance in Life

In late 2012 I met Debby Kratky and her team in Fort Worth, Texas. That night I tweeted that for the first time I had been in the same room with people who should be "CNN Heroes".

Debby and her colleagues have helped hundreds of ex-offenders who have been released from prison after 1 to 30 years get back on their feet. Her program emphasizes helping people discover their strengths, and finding a job that plays to their strengths and to their passions.

She is doing a free webinar tomorrow for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities to share more about the program.

About 3 weeks ago I heard that the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of "added sugar" every day.

Visualizing that in my mind led me to stop eating foods that contain added sugar in any form. I'm on day 17 of "no added sugar." The first thing to go was my craving for anything sweet--all my standard snacks, cereals, etc. The second thing to go was 5 lbs...so far. I feel so much better, and so much more in control.

So today, I'm sharing this infographic in hopes that someone else will take a minute, visualize the amount of sugar they are consuming, and take the simple step to do something about it.

Teachers Are Relatively Very Happy

I'm talking about identifying talents in teachers and students to 85 school principals and administrators today. They have responsibility for more than 20,000 K-12 students. Glad I have so much Gallup research to draw from. Including this very positive item that shows teachers have the 2nd highest well-being scores of any occupation in the United States.

Larry Broughton's story is powerful. He experienced being in a world class team when he was in the special forces. After leaving the military, he got into the hotel industry, and wondered how he could build great teams in the business world. After reading the book "Soaring With Your Strengths," he took a class from Don Clifton. That was a life-changing experience for him. He has been managing his business through strengths ever since. In an industry with organizational turnover of 100%, his employee turnover is around 30%--which provides a significant financial advantage for his firm.

Google’s Nexus Smartwatch: 7 Easy-to-Guess Features!

Here comes the Google Nexus Smartwatch: http://goo.gl/jwbcW1

The Wall Street Journal reported today that an Android-powered smartwatch is coming from LG and Google. The Journal’s source said other companies may also be involved, and that the device is likely to be unveiled at Google I/O, Google’s developer conference, which is scheduled to begin June 25.

According to the report, the watch will be integrated with Google Now.

The report didn’t specify the N word, but this information reeks of a quasi-reference design product in line with the Nexus strategy. It’s easy to imagine all this as a Nexus-branded smartwatch with all the core attributes of the Nexus lines of phones and tablets. Let’s go ahead and call it the Nexus Smartwatch.

If I could give a TED talk today, my topic would be "massively distributed capitalism," a phrase I think I coined about 3 weeks ago. It doesn't appear in the Google index yet. But it will be in a minute when I press Share.

The Google link below that references "distributed capitalism" appears to be mostly about distributed consumerism. I'm less interested in that than I am in finding a way to get millions of people an ownership interest in hundreds of companies that could turn out to be the next big thing--to encourage them in Berkshire Hathaway fashion to be long-term investors.

I keep wondering whether Google, Apple, Facebook or Berkshire Hathaway will be the first trillion dollar company. In any case, the ownership of the first trillion dollar corporation will be concentrated in the hands of very few people. Someone will be the first hundred billionaire. Someone will be the first two hundred billionaire.

A trillion dollars isn't cool. You know what's cool? A trillion dollar investment fund -- let's call it Berkshire Hathaway 2.0 -- owned by a million shareholders. A million millionaires--with no billionaires, no concentration of wealth among them. I keep wondering if it might be possible to set up such a fund.

I don't believe in socialism and redistribution of wealth. But I also don't believe in crony capitalism, where industry incumbents lobby government and change the rules making it harder and harder for innovative startups to compete in fields like finance/banking, health care, energy, transportation, education. There are many onerous regulations. Compliance is too expensive for all except the biggest players or best funded companies. Entrepreneurship is declining when we need it the most.

I do believe in innovation. I do believe that technological innovations have the potential to benefit the entire world. As the Whatsapp founders have figured out, in an era of massive connectedness, a service can be created that spreads to hundreds of millions of people and creates enormous value and wealth in just a few years.

The pace of billionaire creation is going to accelerate. When 5 billion people have smartphones and tablets and someone invents a medical device that attaches to these mobile supercomputers that diagnoses illnesses better than doctors and replaces 80% of doctor visits--someone is going to make billions. When robots and 3-D printers enable homes to be built with very little labor cost, for a fraction of the price of a modern home, someone is going to make billions. I can think of so many inventions that are coming that will displace millions of workers but create enormous value for their inventors. What I don't know is what the overall social impact will be. Will the recent widening of the gap between rich and poor continue to worsen?

When inventions can spread to the world with virtually no advertising or marketing costs, inventors and the corporations they work for will make hundreds of billions of dollars.

I'm a fan of innovation--even of disruption--but I fear the long term consequences if the ownership of the means of production isn't distributed more widely. But it can't be done after the wealth is created. That creates resentment and conflict. It needs to be done in advance.

So what I'd like to believe in is that millions of people could find a way to come together, pool small funds, invest in the next big thing, over and over and over again, and turn a small fund into a massive fund--over decades--with massively distributed ownership.

If the worldwide market for lottery tickets is really $260 billion per year (the US market is reportedly $60-70 billion), what if we could get 1% of those funds to be redirected into a pooled fund that might--in 30 or 40 years--provide its investors with enough capital to actually retire on.

What if investment opportunities from Angelist, Y Combinator, Techstars, IndieGoGo and hundreds of incubators, accelerators, and equity crowdfunding platforms worldwide could be sourced by a large group of investors--investors who want to build wealth over the long term and share it with others--and somehow, the wisdom of the crowd, or the power of predictive markets, or expert networks could be tapped so that this fund could made good to great investment decisions week after week, month after month, year after year.

Maybe the motto could be E Pluribus Plenum.___

"Early to bed ... not too early to rise..."

Day 6: Top performers #sleep: 8 hours and 36 min

The average American: 6 hours and 51 min

One of the most influential studies of human performance, conducted by professor K. Anders Ericsson, found that elite performers need 10,000 hours of “deliberate practice” to reach levels of greatness. While this finding sparked a debate about the role of natural talent versus countless hours of practice, another element was all but missed. If you go back to Ericsson’s landmark 1993 study, there was another factor that significantly influenced peak performance: #sleep. On average, the best performers slept 8 hours and 36 minutes. The average American, for comparison, gets just 6 hours and 51 minutes of sleep on weeknights.

The person you want to fly your airplane, operate on your body, teach your children, or lead your organization tomorrow is the one who sleeps soundly tonight. Yet in many cases, people in these vital occupations are the ones who think they need the least sleep. And more than 30 percent of workers sleep less than six hours per night.

This sleep-related productivity loss costs about $2,000 per person a year and leads to poorer performance and lower work quality. Getting fewer than six hours of sleep a night is also the top risk factor for burnout on the job. If you want to succeed in your job, make sure your work allows you to stay in bed long enough.

It's time to discover your strengths. Plus, this makes a great holiday gift for family and friends.

Last year my nephew took StrengthsFinder 2.0 right after Christmas. It was such a powerful experience to have feedback on his personal strengths. It gave him the courage to change careers. Shortly after getting his strengths report, he decided to stop selling insurance (which he really hated) and pursue a career in counseling. He's now getting a master's degree in family therapy. I saw him at Thanksgiving and he credits StrengthsFinder for helping him find his calling in life--he is so happy with the path he is now on.
