AmyBeth Inverness31,470The next short story in "The Cities of Luna" comes out on Saturday, December 6. I'll be promo-ing all day (and the entire next week, but that's irrelevant) culminating in a facebook party in the evening. After all's said and done, I'm coming over to G+, kicking off my shoes (thus...the event header image...) and hanging out with all of you while I recover from my hectic day. You don't have to hang with me at that specific time. You can just 'sign' my 'souvenir' book anytime._One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor_ Release Day After-Party2014-12-07 04:30:005

Dylan Cuffy10,308#WhatLiesAground Well...you've been waiting for days, so I'll give it to you now.Welcome to the final edition of what I now dub the Fab 500! Time to say hello (and happy Easter) to this bunch of fine folks. Eleven here, not the usual ten, because someone's account went bye-bye without a word:• +Louie Baur, +Empire Avenue stalwart; ask for him whenever you want aerial views of your car dealership• +Alexander Moschella, a furry who also thrives on +Fiverr• +Juan Reyes (poet hailing from Texas; not that +Juan Reyes, our last milestone man. Thanks, +A Long!)• +Karen Woodward (yet another lit geek; thanks, +Sarah Brown!)• +Philippe TREBAUL (circled through an Empire mission)• +Domenico Mallimo (who had another milestone of his own—15,000 followers—the other day)• +Chris Voss (who recently gave FB users a compelling reason to switch to G+ or elsewhere)• +Kenneth Burchett (follower #10,000 of mine; also, a spot in my Marigot Magic dedication)• +Ray Hamlet (Dominica's second-best on G+)• +Angie Person (another Caribbean user, this time from Aruba; thanks, 2014-04-20 21:55:195001012

Dan Thompson2,147Here is my circle of writers.  My suggestion to you new G+ folks is to add the entire circle as its own circle, i.e. "Dan's Writing Circle".  Over time, move your favorites over into your own growing array of circles. In particular, though, I'd say pay attention to John Ward, Evo Terra, Nathan Lowell, Brook Johnson, and Jefferson Smith.2014-02-22 19:51:53249212

Brittany Constable3,838You know, I haven't seen any NaNoWriMo shared circles going around yet.  Perhaps communities have made them a little redundant, but this is still one of my favorite things about the Plus, so I'm sharing away. The people in this circle have all either mentioned NaNoWriMo in posts or comments, or are in the NaNoWriMo 2013 community.  Please let me know if you:- are not in this circle and should be (this is the one time of year I'll circle anyone and everyone as long as they're doing NaNo)- are in the circle and shouldn't be- are doing NaNo, but would not like to be included in shared circlesA note about adding large circlesIn the past, I've added WriMos to both the NaNo circle and the general writers circle.  This has proven a mistake, since a lot of people who pipe up enthusiastically during November later disappear off G+, or just don't prove a good fit for my stream, and it leaves me spending a lot of time doing circle maintenance. So what I'm doing this year, and what I'd recommend others do as well, is add new people only to this circle (if they're not already in other circles) and keep the volume turned all the way down.  Then you can go to the separate stream and check people out, adding only the people you want to keep around to other circles. In a couple of months you can empty out the NaNo circle and clear out all the people who didn't make the cut.2013-10-23 17:06:17401404

Dylan Cuffy2,404#WhatLiesAground Speaking of +Jens Graikowski, the circle showcase continues. You are now looking at The Chosen 44, a special group of people I rounded up on G+ back in February. To reiterate from the post that first introduced them, this is a circle of more-or-less active people and profiles whom I've followed for ages.I had only one purpose to use this circle in the first place: to show them some screencaps from "Mouse Warming", a 1952 Looney Tunes short so obscure that it was hard to get until much recently (when Warner Bros. included it in their Mouse Chronicles collection on DVD). This, for a rodent romance directed by none other than the talented Chuck Jones himself!Sad to say, that project's stalled out practically ever since I posted the credits. Maybe by tomorrow I'll resume it at long last--if we can get an alternative audio jack on the CPU working. But we shall prosper eventually! That's not all, folks! Tomorrow, you'll get to meet my Top 10 most relevant accounts on G+, and also some of the circle networks I rounded up at the start of the year.(To those in this circle: If you see "shared directly" with this message in your notifications, that means you're already included right here.)2013-05-31 16:38:4244102

Brad Leclerc28,193I haven't shared a circle in a while, and since I seem to have a flood of new circlers lately, I figure now might be a good time to get back into the habit. Starting with this circle of 150~ awesome people, which I have named my "Inner Sanctum".They post on a wide range of topics, from gaming, to science, to writing, to politics (across the spectrum, so you might not agree with everything they all say), to movies, to saucy photos, and everything in between. There are even a few slightly more well known and/or celebrity types in here, though they're all fairly active about posting, and interacting in general). They all really have only one thing in common: they make my G+ stream epic. You really can't go wrong with this circle. Trust me on that.2013-05-09 05:33:39151629

I am looking at a new phone. Finally got to my upgrade window! Wooo.

My options are iphone 5s, iphone 5c (yellow, green, blue, or pink!!), samsung galaxy s5, samsung galaxy Alpha.

Here is the deal; i will immediately ignore android or apple fan people. I have no interest in it. I want a phone good for me. I don't give a shit about the brand wars.

Right now i have an iphone. I also gave an ipad. I use itunes on my computer.

Here is what i need:

1: easy to use. If i have to hack anything, it is not the phone for me. I do not want to have to troubleshoot my phone.

2: good battery life.

3: kindle app compatible. I read on my phone.

4: small. I have tiny hands. Iphone 5 is pretty much my maximum. (My husband has one and it does fit in my hand)

5: no yanking batteries to reset the phone. I hated that about... more »

Dear Clean Reader,

You have the freedom of religion and speech--you can say what you want. I support your freedom to believe what you want and say what you want.

Unfortunately for you, this is a two-way street. I can believe what I want, and I can say what I want.

You have the freedom to not listen. I have the freedom to not listen to you, too.

I don't feel you have the freedom or right to change my words because you don't like what I have to say. I have the freedom to speak--and write--the words I want in my novels. That is my art. That is my story. While I'd love everyone to read and enjoy my stories, I understand not everyone is my audience.

If you don't like the use of the words fuck or bitch, or if you dislike the thought of a witch working with a bitch, my novels aren't for you--and I'm okay with that.

I could use some good news. My streams on all of my networks are filled with really bad stuff. So, tell me all of the good, happy things going on with you today.

Pretty please?

The only way I can describe my mood today is volatile. I'm in a constant battle with negativity today. I'm prone to fixating on the worst bits, and I can't seem to let go of whatevers for any reason.

It's not really depression, although it's starting to border on it. It's more of like a deep-seated irritation making me prone to want a fight--and me fighting not to be argumentative for the sake of being argumentative.

My temperament is all over the place. This is in part thanks to being a female. (Fuck off, body. Go take your nasty cramps fucking elsewhere.)

Part of it is due to a much lower than normal tolerance level to just about everything. I want to snarl, snap, and throw plates.

This is making it very, very difficult for me to do my job today, as I'd really rather go wallow in misery, anger, and annoyance than be chipper.

And before anyone asks, yes, I entitled my post to Clean Reader as Clean Writer on purpose--because that's what that stupid app wants me to be.

It's snark. Live with it. And if they can meddle with the books of others, I can fuck with the name of their little app.

I want you, Reader, to be happy with what you read.

At the same time, I want my book to remain my book. Please don't take away my freedom of speech because you don't like what I'm saying. Don't change my words because you don't like what I have to say. Go ahead and skip scenes--go ahead and ignore what I have to say. But don't change my words. Those were written for a reason. And in my books, I say fuck and bitch and shit and damned and an assortment of other naughty words that may be difficult for you to swallow.

I don't mind if you don't like what I'm saying, but please don't take away my right to say it.

The words in my novels are, and will always be, mine. They are not yours to change as you please, simply because you are not comfortable with what I have to say.

I do not support your application, and I am intend never to do business with you and yours.

Fuck off.

Yours,

RJ Blain.

Some of you might be asking just what that little tirade was about.  Over the past few days, the internet has exploded regarding an app called Clean Reader. Clean Reader, developed by a fundamental Christian who was tired of reading profane language, scrubs novels for naughty words and replaces the terrible, frightening, profane, scary words!!! with harmless ones.

At a glance, I can see why many people would like this feature; profanity in books is difficult to avoid, and many adults don't want their children getting a hold of stories with bad words in them. I grew up with a very colorful language. Amazingly enough, I didn't turn into a monster. To this day, I still have a rather extensive vocabulary of naughty, naughty words.

Chuck Wendig wrote a spectacular piece on Clean Reader, and I agree with it from top to bottom. However, I'd like to go on to make some observations about this app from my perspective.

My first thought: Fuck you, Clean Reader. Bitch is not another word for witch. This is another shining example of why computers can't do your editorial work for you. Bitch has several different meanings and connotations. One is a curse word. One is not. Get over it. Welcome to the English language.

I'm the author of the Witch & Wolf novels. Bitch is a term for female dog. Guess what? Female Fenerec, the wolves in my world, are frequently called bitches. It is a compliment. Calling someone the son of a bitch is also complimentary. It's a nod of respect to the mother, who is a bitch.

They're proud to be bitches--in all ways.

In Winter Wolf and Inquisitor, the main characters at one point or another are referred to as bitches. They're also partnered with witches.

If you exchange bitch for witch, the entire story changes. Two witches are going out for a party instead of a bitch and a witch. A son of a witch is a much different thing than a son of a bitch in my world.

You're not just cleaning up the language of novels when you use this app. You are changing the meaning of the story. You're altering the plot, the characters--and the imagery the author wrote for your enjoyment--or not, if you dislike profanity.

I understand adults wanting to purify the world for their children. It's an instinct to want to nurture and protect the young.

My novels aren't the only stories that will suffer catastrophically from the existence of this application. Take George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Sure, I may not like the writing or the series--but Martin uses traditional and crude language to convey things. Entire characters are hinged on the use of this language. If you take away the bitches and make them witches, the entire story changes. The entire tone of the novel is destroyed.

I may not like Martin's works, but I respect his art--I respect the words he chose. I don't like them. He had the freedom to say and write those words.

I chose not to read that series of his. That's my choice as a reader.

When I initially found out about Clean Reader through a member's only discussion over at SFWA, I was on the fence about the app. I could see some uses for it in very certain contexts. There are some novels where the fuck bomb gets dropped so frequently that it makes my eyes cross and my cheeks twitch. It's annoying--and I don't really feel so many fucks doesn't help express anything about the characters.

But, I respect the living fucks out of the author's right to put those fucks there--and have the book read as it was intended. Black text on a black background, where I could see the words used if I chose--I could live with that. But changing those words to sanitize a novel?

That I can't live with. It's a violation of the author's freedom of speech.

If Clean Reader simply put black text on black background for the naughty words, allowing readers to see those original words, I wouldn't have been so up in arms over this.

The more I thought about it--and the more I read about the concerns of others regarding this app, the more I really disliked the app altogether.

My bitches aren't witches--they're bitches. Some of my bitches are witches, but them being witch witches makes no sense.

Some readers want to stay safely nestled in their comfort zones. I get that. There are books I simply can't read because they take me too far from what I can handle. I put down that book and quietly walk away. Sometimes it is the language--like Martin's novels. The language bothers me, so I do not read it. I find his writing crude, and I simply can't tolerate it enough to get into the story or the characters.

Sometimes it is the content that bothers me... so I choose to avoid those books. That's my choice as a reader. I do not buy what I cannot bring myself to read. I also check the samples of books I buy to make sure the content doesn't bother me. Most books have the language and content present within the sample, so it's not like I can't filter what I don't want to read. I also check reviews for that sort of thing.

If it isn't something I can stomach, I exercise my right as a reader and find some other story to consume.

I don't have children, but if I did, if it's a book I'm willing to read, it includes things I'm willing to discuss with my children, no matter what age they are.

If I had a child and they wanted to learn about the birds and the bees, they'd know. And they'd get my moral lessons along with it--and why what they read doesn't define who they are. That's my job as a parent.

If you don't want your child reading those books, don't let them read those books. You can install a door on your bookshelves and use a lock. Keep the key. That's your right.

But don't take away my right to express myself. I chose those words for a reason. I didn't choose them so someone else could come behind me and change them. If you don't like reading profane language--don't read them. Skip them. Skip the sex scenes (which I don't typically write anyway), skip the graphic violence--choose not to read the books.

But don't change my words because you can't handle what I have to say.

For the record, if Clean Reader only changed the color of the background and text to black out the questionable words, I wouldn't have quite as much of a problem with the existence of the app. My words aren't being changed, and are still available for the reader--in their original form.

But don't change my words because you can't handle what I have to say. So long as you have the freedom to say what you want, so do I, and I will never give you permission to change my words without my consent.___

Now that I'm back from my evening adventure driving my friend home from the hospital, I need to figure out what sort of productive work I'm doing tonight. I might work on an article for the SFWA but I might see how much I can get done on Blood Diamond or Project Zeta. I might do ALL OF THE ABOVE.

Because I have loads of time before bed.

And I do nothing but work.

Good thing my job is also my play time.

To add to my collection of SF/F authors with a presence on Google+, I present +Brandon Sanderson. I know he's a step off the beaten indie path I've taken so far, but he's definitely worth mentioning.

I can't just pick one book I like of his. He's a talented author who creates intriguing, detailed worlds.

I will say, however, that my current favorite novel is Elantris. It was the first Sanderson novel I've read, and I hope it close to my heart.

He's also a really great guy, so if he happens to be at a signing near you, go say hello! I've had the pleasure of meeting him, and it's well worth the hike to a signing if you're a fan.

If you choose to follow him on the plus, you'll see updates to newsletters, books, and appearances, and things like that.

Today's Fiction Writing Resource is Holly Lisle's blog. Holly Lisle is a SF/F author who manages to balance stuff for her readers and stuff for writers on her blog.

This site can be quite the rabbit hole, and was one of my favorite early references for learning how to write better fiction.

A blast from the past. My #Moleskinetower I built about a year ago.

I should have done this for... was it #TowerTuesday  or #TowerThursday as coordinated by +Moleskine but I did it today. I was too sick to safely create this monstrosity when it was officially going on.

This is the tower to heaven, and you never know what sort of mystical things you'll find along the way in those pretty, pretty pages.

Only +Moleskine brand journals were abused in the making of this tower. The tower itself consists of over 60 different journals.

The miniatures are all from Reaper's bones line of miniatures.

The map was my labor of love and some art I did in a, you guessed it, +Moleskine journal.

I am a writer. I write fantasy and science fiction novels. <3 Moleskines are my poison of choice for the creative process.

What's your tower to heaven made from?

Obviously I need to reach 100 +Moleskine journals to be satisfied. My birthday is coming up in May. >.> <.<

The large soft covered ones are my favorite--in blue or orchid. You know, if you liked me enough to give me a birthday present. Just a thought.

(I also love Spicebox's paired letter-sizedish writing journals. The packs with the purple ones and the ones with the green/blue ones are my favorites.)

I'm settling into my first full day with the white board set up, and I think this is one of the best things I have ever done for myself. It lets me write out notes and thoughts without disrupting or wasting paper.

And I can erase as I want, and its' far enough away from main part of desk I don't smear everything off.

Super happy right now.

Query Shark is one of my favorite fiction resources. Lots of people need help writing the best query possible. This is one agent's perspective on what makes a good query.

Her comments are priceless, and you can get a pretty good feel for what makes a good query. So, if you're considering approaching an agent or a publishing house, check out this blog. It's worth the read.

It's also good advice for building your back-of-book blurbs, too--since query letters aren't much different. You want to hook an agent, and you want to hook a reader. It does the same job.

In my quest to share some of my favorite writing blogs and fiction information, I'm showcasing some of my favorites. Here's one of them.

+Chuck Wendig is one of my favorite authors out there; his books are interesting, and his blog is quite something! There is a lot of good writing advice to be found here. What you'll find on his blog varies. He's very direct, and if you're a delicate little flower, you might have some of your ego or feelings lanced as he dives straight to the point.

He doesn't pull the punches, and I think it's something that we all need from time to time--and he gives great advice worth considering.

He's got a lot of humor. He also uses a lot of naughty, naughty words. Wonderfully naughty words.

If I can manage that much, I'll consider myself ahead of the game.

I think my husband is more awake and coherent than I am this morning.

I have no idea how today is going to work out for me work wise. With my friend back in the hospital, I'm on call to do some running around (at the very least, drop their dog off at boarding and doggie daycare and deposit my friend at the metro so she can get to the hospital.)

If he's released today, I'll have to venture to the hospital itself, which is an adventure in and of itself. If he's not released today, I have no idea wtf will be happening, so will have to play it by ear.

I had that promised cupcake for breakfast and it was what the actual fuck delicious.

The benefit to waiting in the ER is that it is really quiet and I can try to write things.

The downside is, if I have to pee, I have to cast 'summon best friend' which has a long casting time and involves a percentage chance of success directly related with my need to pee. ;)

The benefit to waiting in the ER is that it is really quiet and I can try to write things.

The downside is, if I have to pee, I have to cast 'summon best friend' which has a long casting time and involves a percentage chance of success directly related with my need to pee. ;)

Here is hoping I think of a fun way to continue this story. Totally off-cuffing this.

They have gone into the actual ER now, yay!

We were playing a game in the waiting room called Black Stories. It was seriously gruesome but fun.

I bet anyone listening in on us thinks we're terrible people.

Okay, first half of Storm Surge is sent to my final proofer. Happy dance!!

I need to start organizing myself for next week. I don't think I have any doctor's appointments for my friend until sometime right after Easter, so that's great. Friday before Easter I think I'll be headed to my mother in law's place for the weekend. Not sure what work I'll be taking with me. Guess it's time to figure this shits out.

Apparently, it's a bit of an issue in the store when people switch between iphone to android and vice versa. I declared I was a stupid phone user up front and it was easy.

Here is what i need:

1: easy to use. If i have to hack anything, it is not the phone for me. I do not want to have to troubleshoot my phone.

Many thanks and high fives to +Elizabeth S. Craig for sharing a link to this resource.

Athene and her new partner Ed are about to face Yellowstone in all of its wonderful and terrible glory.

~~*~~

An ash-covered wasteland punctuated by a lonely bubbling mud geyser stretched out as far as Athene could see. In the distance, a black cloud hung over the ground and reached up to the sky. Gray flakes whirled around them in restless eddies.

“Holy shit,” Ed whispered.

“Good luck you two,” Abigail said before turning the shuttle and hurtling back towards the relative safety of the observation center.

Athene couldn’t resist the urge to flip a rude gesture at the departing shuttle. The hardest part was waiting until certain the vehicle was out of comm range before saying, “If you want to stay here, I won’t begrudge you. This is a one way trip.”

“Don’t write us off yet,” Ed snapped.

Turning to her companion, Athene jabbed her finger against his chest. “Listen, and listen closely. We have no more than three hours to walk through this mess, get to the crater, and return. After that, we’ll run out of air. That’s why she’s returning to the center. The shuttle could last three hours, but we won’t be making it here for a lift back. I wasn’t joking. This is a one way trip.”

“Oh, God.” Ed shook his head. “That bitch.”

With a shrug, Athene stepped away from her companion and faced the column of black smoke and ash marking Yellowstone’s caldera. “I’m going. If you sit still and control your breathing, you might last for six hours. She might come back. I could be wrong. The tanks could last longer. But they might not.”

She could feel Ed’s gaze on her long before he asked, “How long do tanks normally last for?”

A laugh worked its way out of her throat. “Thirty minutes. A friend made one last for fifty once, controlling his breathing with no exertion. We’ll be moving. The best I’ve used had a three hour lifespan. I’ve heard of models capable of lasting four, but I’m willing to bet we don’t have those.”

“Can we make it there and back in two hours? If we watch how we breathe then, could our tanks last?” Ed pulled his scan out of its holster and examined it as well as the rectangular box protecting the sensors. “I’m not going to sit here and chicken out. If you can handle this walk, so can I.”

“I can’t promise you anything,” she warned. If he could deal with the reality of their situation, they might live long enough for their limited air supply to become a real issue. “The only way to know what’s under this ash is to step on it. If it bubbles, walk elsewhere. If it’s glowing, smoking, or otherwise looks hot, walk elsewhere. There will be ejecta debris underfoot. Test your every step. Once we reach the crater, well, we’ll find out how lucky we are. We might not need to reach the edge to get the data we need. You know these scanners better than I do. Do they allow manual data input and messaging?”

“Sure, I can rig something like that in five minutes, no problem. There are a few settings for parsing out messages—assuming the idiot on the other end knows what he’s doing.”

Athene tapped her foot as she considered their options, narrowing her eyes as she took in the charred landscape between her and Yellowstone. Getting there alive was her top priority, which meant she needed reliable information.

All she could do was trust that Ed wasn’t lying about his skills with the scanner. “Okay. Here’s what I want you to do. Starting now, run basic elevation and slant scans. I need to know if we’re going up or downhill.”

“It looks like this area was flattened to me.”

She wanted to snort at Ed’s ignorance, but she waited until she could control her voice before saying, “There should be an increase in elevation as we approach the caldera. However, if magma pressure is building or there’s movement, the ground will swell. In past records of Yellowstone, this movement equated to a couple of inches per year. However, there was notable buckling and steam fissures before the lat eruption. The changes in elevation were measured in feet. Our first job will be to try to find out if that’s happening here.”

“Want me to do a scan now?” he asked, turning on his scanner an tapping at the device. “Damn, these gloves make this a bit obnoxious.”

“You’ll get used it,” she reassured him. “Can you do the scans without transmitting the data? When I checked mine, it was set to auto transmit.”

“Easily done.” Ed knelt, placed the silver-coated box on the ground, and went to work with the scanner. “Even if I set mine to auto transmit, elevation scans won’t transmit without specific input on this model, not unless it’s coupled with full imagery.”

“Good to know. Thank you.” Hovering over his shoulder, Athene watched as Ed adjusted the settings on the scanner. As the seconds ticked by, a green and black image of the rock below appeared on the screen. “Go ahead and start up the heat scans,” she ordered.

Colors appeared on the display, with orange and yellow denoting the presence of magma in the chamber beneath them at a depth of two miles. The seismometer reported shallow microquakes, punctuated by trembling she could feel through her boots.

“Damn, she’s chatty,” Ed said, pointing at the readings. “There’s no way to get the depth of the chamber with his gear. What’s his data mean?”

“Bad news and lots of it,” she replied, tapping her finger against the depth reading. “This should be reading six miles. At two, I’m hoping it’s a pocket caused by the current eruption.” With a shake of her head, she moved her finger to the seismometer data. “The chatter is from magma shifting in the chamber. At least it isn’t a one mile of depth. One mile’s bad.”

“How bad?”

“If the caldera isn’t actively venting its steam and keeping the pressure in the chamber stabilized, it’ll be bad. By bad, I mean they’ll be spitting ash out in Mexico bad—if there’s anyone left in Mexico by the time it’s done spewing. Volcanoes are weird. It isn’t the increase of pressure you have to worry about, it’s the sudden decrease of pressure in the chamber that’s a real problem. It makes all sorts of reactions happen. Things head south once the pressure drops, until the volcano erupts violently. If there’s magma moving at a mile beneath the surface with no active eruptions and a lot of chatter, I’d be wagering on a large-scale eruption in a matter of minutes or hours—maybe days if nothing drops the pressure in the chamber.”

Ed made a strangled noise. “That’s not comforting, Doc.”

“It wasn’t supposed to be. There’s just too many factors to know for sure. How fast is the chamber filling? Is it already filled to capacity? How deep is it? How many places can pressure escape? Have there been any large quakes? Large quakes could be good—but they could be bad, too. If there’s a deep quake, there’s a chance the magma will have a place to settle. But, that could drop pressure in the chamber and trigger an eruption.” Athene held her hands up in a helpless gesture.

“So what’s your best guess?”

“Historically, Yellowstone is a hydrothermal system. There should be water here somewhere. But, most magma chambers are a state of partial melt. There’s solid stone and metals mixed in with the magma. Considering the circumstances, we simply don’t know enough about Yellowstone. Lake Toba was an easy read. It’s been quiet. It’s always quiet. One day, its fault line will start shaking and it’ll blow. Yellowstone isn’t as friendly.”

“No shit. Okay, Doc, riddle me this. What is Yellowstone’s eruption cycle supposed to be?”

“Six hundred thousand years, give or take tens of thousands of years.”

“Are you the crazy type, or do you think this place is really going to blow? Why come out here when you know it’s a suicide run?” Ed kept his attention on the scanner, flipping to a new setting. “Ambient temperature is reading in at sixty-two point seven Celsius. Do you want an air quality check?”

“Don’t bother, it’s toxic. To answer your question, all I can do is give you my best guess. The truth is no one knows for certain.” Athene pointed at the ash cloud. “That’s promising. If it’s spitting ash, it’s venting. However, if more magma is entering in the chamber faster than it’s leaving, pressure can change. Pressure changes are dangerous. What we’re looking for is strong swarms of quakes, sudden ground upheavals, and the depth of the magma. There should be water here somewhere, too. If we find it, we need to know how close to the magma chamber it is.”

“I’ll bite, Doc. What happens if the water is close to the magma chamber?”

Quelling her desire to snap at her companion for his ignorance, she settled with clapping her hands together. “Boom.”

“I don’t like booms,” was the sullen reply. “How bad will it be? This place is flatter than a pancake.”

“The only problem with your idea of pancakes is that we have no idea how big the pancake is, or how hot the frying pan is,” Athene replied, unable to keep her strained laughter out of her voice. “We’re too small and insignificant to even count as a berry in comparison to Yellowstone’s historic size.”

Ed scowled, returning the instrument box to its holster. “Wonderful. So, what now?”

“We hike and we hope we don’t step in something lethal. Before it erupted, this used to be a park with a lake and very active hydrothermal system. I would’ve thought there’d be more water, at least more than one little mud geyser.” Athene could only hope there wasn’t a lake lurking beneath the ash, waiting to swallow them up.___

She certainly doesn't count on waking the ship's damaged AI or having three stowaways, Micah Rotherwood and brothers Jem and Barre Durbin, along for the ride. They all have their private reasons for hiding aboard and lives they are seeking to escape, but if the accidental crew can't work together and learn to trust each other, they'll die together, victims of a computer that doesn't realize the war ended decades before any of them were even born.

Her Fantasy Series (YA):

The Changeling Series:

The Between (#1): http://www.amazon.com/Between-Changelings-Choice-Book-ebook/dp/B006UVP724/

High school senior, Lydia Hawthorne, is less than grateful when Oberon has her snatched from the mortal world and she finds out she's actually Fae. And not just any Fae, but a trueborn with enough inherent magic to tip the balance between Oberon and Titania's warring Bright and Shadow courts.

But that's their game and she doesn't want to play by their rules. Together with Clive Barrow, a Bright Court Fae with embarrassing family ties to the mortal world, Lydia fights to regain her old life, fueling her magic with the very human power of love and loss, challenging the essential nature of Faerie itself.

Time and Tithe (#2): http://www.amazon.com/Time-Tithe-Changelings-Choice-Book-ebook/dp/B00STRSQ1G/

Only months after her victory over Oberon and Titania, everything Lydia thought she'd accomplished is unraveling: Faerie is falling into decay, the Fae are restless, and Taylor—the baby sister she sacrificed everything for—has grown up without her.

When Taylor tumbles out of the ordinary world and into Faerie, she discovers that Aeon, her imaginary childhood friend, is all too real. He is a powerful Fae, trapped in a maze of vengeance, memory, and madness. His unleashed power threatens to free Oberon and Titania and reignite the war Lydia ended.

The sisters, now nearly strangers to one another, must figure out how to keep Aeon from destroying Faerie while safeguarding the mortal world, all without sacrificing the Fae who was once friend to them both.___

Have you read +Daniel Swensen 's novel, Orison, yet?

If you like an original take on classic fantasy, you really should give it a shot. Daniel pulls off a few tricks that I thought were near impossible to hook a jaded old fantasy fan like me.
