A woman I work with, newly hired, made a comment about how women are more creative than men, and that she was the exception because she is not (this was about the layout of cocktail tables for an event, and placing the centerpieces on the tables, so creativity wasn't really necessary).

I call her on it. A lot men are creative. In fact, I tell her, three of our male engineers and tech crew actually have Fine Arts degrees. She argues, saying - again - that most men aren't creative.

I argue back. "Just think about all the Old Masters. Almost all the ones the average person knows were men. DaVinci. Renoir. Rembrandt. There's never been a shortage of creative men."

We're walking together and she's slightly in front at that moment. She stops and looks back at me, exhaling a huff of breath. "I'm just saying it, you know?"

How do you handle situations of sexist language when they come up at work, or in other situations? I know there are plenty of people who would choose to say nothing, and even those who would tell me I should have said nothing. What are your thoughts?___

This is a well-written post. The only thing I would change is to add that women also perpetuate these behaviors. Also - I think "guys" can be used as a gender neutral term, but if you aren't willing to use it to refer to a single female, then I'd agree.

I spent some time tonight talking with Buzzy Jackson, author of A Bad Woman Feeling Good, and she was excited about the book I've been working on. Truly excited, in a way that led to a good discussion about related (vaguely) topics like Wonder Woman. It has been so long since anyone has sounded excited about this project, that it's been hard for me to get back to it. I have a finished second draft, but I think I need to pretty much do a rewrite. Need to check on that, for certain. It made me realize I need to connect with more people who care about the things I care about. And it made me a little sad to realize how little cheerleading I get from those around me.

This particular project is a biography of one of my favorite, but little known, historical figures -- Lucy Stone. She was utterly famous in her time, but no one knows her today. It's not an academic project, but a story,... more »

Have you read The Dog Stars, by Peter Heller? If not, I recommend it. It's a lonely, sad, story with strong heart moments. It's set in the near future, in a post-apocalyptic time. It focuses on on one character (Hig) and how he survives -- more about his emotional and psychological survival, but also his physical survival. It's about his relationships, and about relationships in general. With ourselves. With our past. With our world. With others. Although it's post-apocalyptic, it's not a genre piece.

Had dinner at the Laboratory last night. There were five of us, and we all enjouyed it, though my nephew wasupset that his steak was medium-well, rather than medium Tht was the only complaint.

The coconut mojito was served in a beaker. The water glasses had mL markings on the side. The played 80s rock the whole time we were there, but not so loudly that it interferred with conversation. It was raining when we arrived, so we sat inside, but there's a nice outside area, as well.

Check it out when you get a chance.It's on the corner of College and Stuart. The entrance is in the back of the building, so don't let the big "space available" sign scare you off.

There it's something inherently wrong when the intertubes blow up over how one celebrity's style of feminism is "better" than another's. If a woman publicly proclaims that she's a feminist, chances are really, really good that she is. It's okay to disagree with the choices she makes, but it's not okay to decide that, because you disagree with her choices, she isn't a feminist. One of the key tenets of feminism is empowering people to have the opportunity to make choices. Emma Watson and Beyonce each consider themselves feminists. Guess what. They're both right.

This quiz doesn't tell you what princess you are or which one you'll marry. It doesn't tell you which character in your favorite book or movie you are, or what your favorite color or flower or baby name is. It just tells you how good you are at spotting real smiles. I'd love to know your score, just because I'm curious how easy it is for most people. I'm curious if writers and artists do better, because they often have to understand how to create, via words or clay or paint or . . ., both real and fake smiles in their works. I got 16 out of 20, so 80%, but I don't know how that fits in the overall scheme of things.

Apparently, it's "Catch up on what happened this weekend" day. Amazon is creating a pilot for a revival of The Tick, starring Patrick Warburton. I loved this show and hope it makes it past the pilot stage. Not only is #PatrickWarburton  awesome in just about anything,  there is no one else who could do #TheTick  justice. Color me excited!

From the Atlantic, yesterday. How can this be okay? And are teachers (or those studying to be teachers) supposed to ignore school shootings? I've not read the novel, but if it features a massive school shooting, it will be a terrible novel, indeed, if it doesn't also look at how the students, faculty, and community members react and cope with the shooting. There's nothing here to indicate that there was any other reason to nab this guy.

I know there are/ will be plenty of people who say that California's affirmative consent bill goes too far, but I don't think it does (I haven't read the actual bill; this opinion is based on the articles I've read).

First, it specifically only applies to state funded colleges and universities.
Second, all it's doing is encouraging both (all) parties involved in whatever sexual activity to consent.

It turns the conversation about allegations of assault or rape from "Did they say no?" (read: did they resist/ fight) to "Did they say yes?" Yes, someone could lie about an assault, but they can do that now. I don't think it happens often, but, even more important, I don't think the incidence of false reporting will rise. What will happen, I hope, is that people will realize that not refusing advances is not the same as consenting.... more »

For those of you who aren't familiar with bisexual erasure, it's a very real thing. Very briefly - bisexual erasure is the tendency of many people and organizations (news, outreach, etc.) to use "straight" or "gay" terminology to refer to people. This article looks at how one bisexual activist has been called lesbian over and over  in the news since she and her partner got married. If you read the article, you'll understand why that's a problem. (Though I think the article headline is misleading.)

I ate at the Kitchen a couple of nights ago. The food and service were really good, but it's definitely not priced to be an every-night sort of restaurant (at least, not for me).  

We were a group of five, and everyone enjoyed their food. There wasn't much vegetarian fare, but the server was able to recommend something to me (gnocchi - good, but unexpectedly lemony). One member of our party needed gluten-free, and our server knew which items were safe. And another member of our party had just come back from a 4-hour bike ride, so ordered off-menu: a 24-oz steak called the Cowboy. He said it was perfectly prepared (medium).

Two of us tried their mocktails, and we both enjoyed what we ordered. They brought bottles of still and of sparkling water to the table, so we were able to keep our water glasses full. They never let the bottles get empty.

Everyone ordered dessert, as well. Pot au chocolat, affogato, cantaloupe gelato, and Eton mess. Again, it was all good.

Really, the only problem we had was that they lack sound-dampening tiles. When we first arrived (7:30 on Sunday), it was crowded enough that the noise levels were high; it was hard to hear each other. Once the crowd thinned, though, and we could truly convers, it was a lovely time. If you're looking for a place for a nice dinner, and are willing/ able to drop some cash on it, I recommend it.___

I've been specifically taught about several storytelling patterns, but never this one. I'd manage to work it out on my own, at least at it's essence, but this nicely lays it out for all of us to see.

Wordsmiths and tech geeks of all stripes - I need your help!

When told the word "frak" (standard curse word from Battle Star Galactica) is too strong and will offend people, what would you change it to? This is for a humorous, but professional, piece. It's a thought bubble in response to a picture of looming disaster, so there needs to be a feeling of urgency that is hard to capture without some euphemistic expletive.  

Essentially:
"Frak, we're in big trouble." v. "We're in big trouble."

I'm looking for resources to help me research the effect of language on happiness. So anything linking language to emotion (or showing that there is no link) would be great, as would anything else related. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have several sources, but would like to find more, especially ones I might have missed or overlooked.

In another thread, fellow writer +Andy Burke made the suggestion of using Google Calendar to plot out timelines. This, I think, is a fantastic idea that I wanted to share.

Not only can it be used collaboratively for team projects, but, as he pointed out, it will show when events will overlap. I also like that it will tell me the day of the week, providing I'm using a contemporary dating system in my story. It might not be so great for epic timelines, but could work really well for stories that don't span too many years.

Neil deGrasse Tyson will be live at the Temple Buell Theater on Jan. 30, 2015. I got to go to Climate Change on Earth and Other Planets led/moderated by Bill Nye a couple of years ago. This should be just as awesome. I love that there are at least a few scientists who have celebrity status. :)

It's disheartening to see the backlash against women who are opening themselves up via #yesallwomen . Virtually no one is claiming that men are evil or that all men are committing acts of violence. I've seen no one claim that women are the only ones who have problems. But, right here, right now, it is violence perpetrated against women by men that we are talking about. Whether this is physical, emotional, verbal, or cultural violence doesn't matter. Violence is perpetuated against all women by men. Anyone, man or woman, who is trying to turn this discussion into anything else, isn't listening.

For years my friends and I have joked about Fort Collins being a black hole; it sucks people back when they try to leave. The reality is, Fort Collins is a good community. I wasn't part of the poll, but I'm satisfied with the city. :)
