A woman I work with, newly hired, made a comment about how women are more creative than men, and that she was the exception because she is not (this was about the layout of cocktail tables for an event, and placing the centerpieces on the tables, so creativity wasn't really necessary).

I call her on it. A lot men are creative. In fact, I tell her, three of our male engineers and tech crew actually have Fine Arts degrees. She argues, saying - again - that most men aren't creative.

I argue back. "Just think about all the Old Masters. Almost all the ones the average person knows were men. DaVinci. Renoir. Rembrandt. There's never been a shortage of creative men."

We're walking together and she's slightly in front at that moment. She stops and looks back at me, exhaling a huff of breath. "I'm just saying it, you know?"

Hi! I'll be moving to Corvallis within the next month (new job) and would love to connect with folks. You can learn all about me on my Google+ profile: google.com/+tamfrager/about

Also - if anyone has housing recommendations, that would be appreciated. There will be two adults (roommates) and a small cat. House is preferred, but apartment is okay.

Email settings can leave even tech savvy people scratching their heads. If you or someone you know struggles with them, our latest blog post is for you.

In this post, FRII's Nathan Wheat explains the differences between POP and IMAP in language that's easy to understand. Take a few minutes to read it, and pass it on to others who would appreciate it.

Ooh - how did I not know this simple trick. You can bet I'll be using it! Thanks to my NOC guys for letting me know.  :)

Firefly or Buffy? Tacos or buffalo wings? Who's paying for drinks? Some things are just too hard to decide without a little help. So you flip a coin. Or you roll a die. At least, you would if you had any coins or dice on you.

Google to the rescue! Just type "flip coin" or "roll die" into Google's search bar, and Google will do that. Perfect, since so many of us have our smart phones, but not a coin.

I really need to do this. I don't need every revision of stories I've finished and backed-up (though I'd keep some). And I haven't run a defrag in a few months.

It's National Clean Out Your Computer Day, the perfect day to do those things you've been putting off, but that can help your computer run faster. Here are three things you can do:

1. Defrag your system - this could take a while if you've never done it before (loads of tutorials online).

2. Updates - while it's good to make sure any of your software and operating system are up to date, it's even more important to keep your antivirus protection updated (and to run it).

3. Delete old files - delete any files you no longer need (it's a good idea to back them up, first, in case you delete something by mistake)

Interested in helping out some folks who could use a helping hand with the holidays? Or just want to surprise a stranger with an unexpected gift? It's not too late to give a gift through the G+Secret Santa. I've been able to send to a couple of people, but there are lots more.

5 Days Til Christmas!
(4 until I hop in the sleigh if that’s how you keep track)

As we approach the final days of Christmas, I’d like to remind everyone that we’re also running out of shipping days for those of you considering sending gifts. The elves are feverishly working to get my records updated so that everyone’s lists accurately indicate their giving and receiving status. Tonight, we will feature several lists that are themed towards children who have not yet received through Secret Santa.

Browse all of them here: http://gplussanta.com

+Carole Rigonalli
Wishlist: http://goo.gl/HjPPbh

Carole is a mom and a wife trying to show her family the true meaning of Christmas through giving to others, and has accomplished that goal laudably. Let’s show them a little reciprocity since they’ve been so forthcoming, gifting to strangers and spreading hope!

========================================================

+Corrianne Durrett Foltz
Wishlist: http://goo.gl/OlHUIE

Corrianne is a mom raising three kids, all three and under. It’s been a trying year and they’ve been blessed with young Oliver pulling through a scary situation. Let’s see if we can pull our resources and show them a little Secret Santa love!

========================================================

+Robyn Gordon
Wishlist: http://goo.gl/BkQy0Y

Robyn is a stay at home mom and her list is full of wishes for her girls. I know they would love to us grant some for them!

========================================================

+Angie Creasy-Thompson
Wishlist: http://goo.gl/4k8rZe

Angie is the mom of two great kids who she homeschools. When she isn’t busy volunteering her time for Toys-For-Tots, or tending her flock of non-human kids (pun intended), she’s busy contributing to her community as well. Let’s show them how it feels to receive a little after so much giving!

========================================================

I’d also like to honorably mention all the individuals who have taken time to help others in the comments sections. My elves appreciate all the help they can get, and your efforts have guided others through all kinds of obstacles and questions. Thank you all!

+Tovah Stout  +Chris Stauffer +Pinkatron Pence +Stuart Whitmore +Thomas Tenkely +Allison Cutler +Satia Renee +Deedee Slagle +Carissa Merz +Patti Colston +Mara Mascaro +Lucas Appelmann +Stray Farce +Tricia Henson +Mike Allgood +Connie N +Meghan Forshage +Lady Katie +Shantel Dodson +Christy Ramsey

Have you participated in G+ Secret Santa? I've done it the last couple of years, and it's a lot of fun.

How does this whole thing work? Start by making your wishlist!

Participating in Secret Santa is really, really easy. While we work on tidying up some wires behind the scenes making the #SecretSanta  experience even easier, today we'll let you know how the whole thing works!

1) Make your wishlist at Amazon. This is how people will choose what gifts to get you. You make your wishlist at http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist

2) Soon, we'll announce where you submit your wishlist.

3) Browse and gift! It's incredibly simple. On the #GPlusSanta  site, you'll be able to browse wishlists and see why your friends or followers need some extra love this season. Additionally, you can search Google+ with the hashtag #SantaGift

Stay tuned for more details in the coming days.___Have you participated in G+ Secret Santa? I've done it the last couple of years, and it's a lot of fun.

I spent some time tonight talking with Buzzy Jackson, author of A Bad Woman Feeling Good, and she was excited about the book I've been working on. It has been so long since anyone has sounded excited about this project, that it's been hard for me to get back to it. I have a finished second draft, but I think I need to pretty much do a rewrite. Need to check on that, for certain. It made me realize I need to connect with more people who care about the things I care about. This particular project is a biography of one of my favorite, but little known, historical figures -- Lucy Stone. She was utterly famous in her time, but no one knows her today. It's not an academic project, but a story, written for middle grades, because those are such impressionable years, a time when kids are looking for role models and heroes. And, frankly, she fits the bill. This is the first time in a long time that I've felt excited about the project. Thanks, Buzzy!___

Have you read The Dog Stars, by Peter Heller? If not, I recommend it. It's a lonely, sad, story with strong heart moments. It's set in the near future, in a post-apocalyptic time. It focuses on on one character (Hig) and how he survives -- more about his emotional and psychological survival, but also his physical survival. It's about his relationships, and about relationships in general. With ourselves. With our past. With our world. With others. Although it's post-apocalyptic, it's not a genre piece.

Those Saucy Grimms' Fairy Tales That Your Mother Never Told You: The Original First Edition of 1812/15. "For the very first time, Princeton University Press will be publishing the first complete English translation, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, this autumn. All 156 stories from the 1812/1815 edition will be made available in one beautiful book, accompanied by sumptuous illustrations by Andrea Dezsö. From strange tales such as “The Hand with the Knife,” “Herr Fix-It-Up” to “Princess Mouseskin” and “The Golden Key,” wondrous worlds unfold in this new collection — heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all."

Had dinner at the Laboratory last night. There were five of us, and we all enjouyed it, though my nephew wasupset that his steak was medium-well, rather than medium Tht was the only complaint.

The coconut mojito was served in a beaker. The water glasses had mL markings on the side. The played 80s rock the whole time we were there, but not so loudly that it interferred with conversation. It was raining when we arrived, so we sat inside, but there's a nice outside area, as well.

Check it out when you get a chance.It's on the corner of College and Stuart. The entrance is in the back of the building, so don't let the big "space available" sign scare you off.

Who's on ello? (If this is a second post, I apologize. The first doesn't seem to have posted.)

I'm @tamf - let me now who you are, and I'll check out your account. I just joined, so I have no idea whether I'll stay, but I'm certainly game to give it a go.

There it's something inherently wrong when the intertubes blow up over how one celebrity's style of feminism is "better" than another's. If a woman publicly proclaims that she's a feminist, chances are really, really good that she is. It's okay to disagree with the choices she makes, but it's not okay to decide that, because you disagree with her choices, she isn't a feminist. One of the key tenets of feminism is empowering people to have the opportunity to make choices. Emma Watson and Beyonce each consider themselves feminists. Guess what. They're both right.

I vote for the scientists who got to make ant stilts and put them on ants. Is it weird that I think that would be an awesome thing to have on my resume?

Because too many people think it's the abused's fault for staying with the abuser. It isn't. I hope you're never in a position to understand on a personal level why those being abused stay, but you are always in a position to be compassionate. Abuse is always - ALWAYS - the fault of the abuser. Always.

Missed this article last week. Colorado had (finally) updated its laws on human trafficking. Colorado is a big state for human trafficking, but has had poor laws. This is a big deal.

As people continue to talk about how the women who had their photos stolen should have known better than to take nude photos or store them in the cloud, rather than talking about how the gits who stole them shouldn't have stolen them, +Chuck Wendig's blog post says what I wanted to.

This quiz doesn't tell you what princess you are or which one you'll marry. It doesn't tell you which character in your favorite book or movie you are, or what your favorite color or flower or baby name is. It just tells you how good you are at spotting real smiles. I'd love to know your score, just because I'm curious how easy it is for most people. I'm curious if writers and artists do better, because they often have to understand how to create, via words or clay or paint or . . ., both real and fake smiles in their works. I got 16 out of 20, so 80%, but I don't know how that fits in the overall scheme of things.
