"Hoodoo Magic"
I don't know where to begin with this adventure. It was an adventure indeed. This journey took us to unfamiliar lands of the Four Corners region of New Mexico. The area is called the Bisti/De Na Sin Wilderness. The area is spread out for miles. There are no trails or distinctive markings for these areas. The surrounding the area is high desert, completely flat with grassy plains, one could see for miles, unless you journey out to find these other worldly landscapes.
Once you have found this bizarre landscape, it is something that you have NEVER seen before. The landscape will leave you speechless, in awe, trying to find words to describe what you are seeing. The array of colors vary from oranges, reds, magenta, yellow, whites, greys, purples, blacks, olive greens and other colors I can't describe. The hoodoos vary in size from less than twe... more »

One of the best displays of light I've seen! The light was incredible! It lasted a good 30 minutes, and well into twilight.

Afterglow at The Gates
Fun times at Yosemite. The crisp cold air against my hands, the constant sniffling and wiping of my nose made this a fun outing. The frozen shoreline looked so cool!!! It was screaming to be photographed. I set up and waited for the afterglow to appear. I knew I had a very short window to capture the Bands of Venus at its peak, so I made sure I was set and ready to go. Sure enough, the glow came and went within a matter of minutes. This image was a fun one to process too........5 images blended for dof and dynamic range.
Peace and Love

Here is my submission for the #plusonecollection2012 . I've thought about which image to choose for this collection for sometime now. I've had the experience to see some amazing places this past year and deciding which image to choose was somewhat challenging for me. I decided to choose the "Ice Age" image. It was something different, and quite an experience for me. Its not often that you get a chance to see an ice cave.
I also wanted to thank +Ivan Makarov for setting up this wonderful project. I think this is for a great cause and gives the photography community a chance to come to together for something special. Big thanks to +Ivan Makarov. Thanks

Frosted Playa
Had the rare opportunity to photograph the Racetrack with the playa frozen over. When the sunlight hit the playa, the playa would start to shimmer. It was so cold that the rocks even had frost on them. It was awesome!
2012 was an interesting year. I had the chance to see and photograph some amazing places and hope to do the same this year as well. I hope to continue to learn and progress with my work this year as well. Back to business. Peace and Love.
Check out my website at davidthompsonphotography.com if you get some time. I will be releasing new images within the next few weeks.

I was going through some old files this past weekend, and came across this one. This was an image I've always enjoyed, so I figured I'd dust it off and reprocess it. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

North Lake Fall Reflections - Had a nice time hanging out with fellow photographer's +Jean Day , +Marc Briggs and +bert dennison. It was funny when I was trying to capture this scene the clouds would pass every two minutes, so trying to get some clouds in the frame was a challenge. And just being able to capture some fall colors this season was somewhat pleasing.

Morning Solitude
As I stood on the edge of this 3,000 ft canyon, standing there all alone, with the cool gentle breeze flowing and the sound of the Colorado River below me, looking at one of the most incredible sights in the world..................yes, solitude.

Edge of the Storm
On Sunday night my wife and I decided to head to Mt St Helen's for a little picnic. This was supposed to be half 'me scouting for flower conditions' and half 'us having fun together'. The forecast called for no clouds and I didn't really expect any flowers, but since my wife and I had never been to Mt St Helens we went just to have a nice night and enjoy the outdoors a bit. Well after we set up our little picnic I start to notice a freak thunderstorm forming just past Mt St Helens. We sat here and watched the lightening and the CRAZY light for about 45 minutes. The edge of the storm passed by Mt St Helens right at sunset, and I was able to capture this shot.
Guess it was my lucky day!

H2O
Skogafoss Waterfall in Iceland.
To get this shot, I had to put on my chest high waders and get into the stream. The water in the middle where I am standing was waist deep and moving so fast that I could barely hold my ground, but I really wanted to get the rapids in the shot.
I braced my tripod in the rocks about 2/3rds submerged in the water, then used my body to block the camera from flopping over in the water. Rain cover was on the camera due to rain and spray from the waterfall. Needless to say between trying to not get washed away and cleaning the lens between shots, it was a tricky shot to capture. =)

I can't get enough of images from the Subway. When the light hits the tunnel, the glow that comes into the Subway looks incredible.

Last year, I got the chance to visit the southwest. Upper antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona was one of our stops. A very cool place but extremely crowded. This particular image here is described by the locals as "Monument valley" because the formations look like the famous East Mitten Butte in Monument Valley.
Here I looked straight up into the slot and waited for the amazing glow of light illuminate the slot and provide these wonderful colors. Jave

Beams of Light.........I can honestly say that this may have been one of the most incredible displays of light that I have seen. It's been a year since I captured this scene and I still remember the day like it was yesterday. +Javier Acosta, +Alan Chan and myself couldn't believe the light that was unfolding in front of our eyes. I stood at the edge of Steptoe Butte in awe. I was only able to capture 3 images of this scene, with the light changing as fast as it was. Looking back, it was a wonderful experience, and an experience that I am thankful that I was able to capture with my camera, and one that I can share with you. Peace and Love.

I've been going crazy over here on G+ this week. I don't think I've posted this many shots in one week ever. As Im sitting here getting ready for bed, I've been thinking about shooting the coast. It occurred to me that I haven't shot the coast in well over a month! I need to get my coast fix in very soon!
peace and love
